The schools in West Bengal affiliated with the state board will include topics on the novel coronavirus or Covid-19 from the 2021-22 academic session. A text regarding the pandemic and its effects will be a part of the syllabus for each class beginning from Class I to Class X. The initiative has been taken to make kids aware about the global threat and help them take adequate precautions.

“It is a pandemic and the whole world is under threat, thus a student must know the story of this disease and understand the crisis which is being faced by the world,” said chairman of the syllabus reform committee, Avik Mazumdar.

Sources said education minister Partha Chatterjee advised the committee to introduce a chapter on the topic since the disease has struck the masses, including children. “The state government wants students to be prepared and know how they will have to lead a life in the time of coronavirus,” said a source.

Initial discussions have taken place in the school education department on what should be the content of the curriculum.

“The syllabus committee will consult physicians and virologists, along with the teachers, who will assist to frame the chapters,” added the source.
