சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தின் பன்னாட்டு முனையத்தில் பார்வையாளர் கட்டணம் திடீரென உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.
சென்னை மீனம்பாக்கம் விமான நிலையத்தில் கடந்த 2012-ஆம் ஆண்டு வரை உள்நாட்டு மற்றும் பன்னாட்டு முனையங்களில் பார்வையாளர்கள் அனுமதிக்காக கட்டணம் பெறப்பட்டது. இந்த நிலையில், புதிய முனையங்கள் தொடங்கப்பட்டதும் உள்நாட்டு முனையத்தில் பார்வையாளர்கள் அனுமதி ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டு பன்னாட்டு முனையத்தில் மட்டுமே பார்வையாளர் அனுமதி வழங்கப்பட்டது. பன்னாட்டு முனையத்தில் பார்வையாளர்கள் அனுமதிக்கான கட்டணம் ரூ.70-ல் இருந்து ரூ.100 ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தப் புதிய கட்டணம் சனிக்கிழமை (அக்.28) முதல் அமல்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளதாக விமான நிலைய அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.
 

AirArabia flight suffers bird hit during landing in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: An Air Arabia flight with 107 passengers onboard suffered a bird hit while landing at the airport here on Sunday.

The flight coming from Sharjah was about to land around 3.30 AM when it was hit by a peacock, airport sources said.

However, the pilot managed to land it safely, they said.

Owing to the incident, the departure of the return flight has been delayed and a technical team from Chennai is attending to the problem,, they added.

Tamil Nadu governor inaugurates Chennai-Paris flight

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit inaugurated Jet Airways' first direct service between Chennai and Paris at a function held at Chennai International airport on Saturday.

An airline official said that the flight had 50% occupancy on the first service. The 9W 128 flight to Paris took off from Chennai at 1.45am on Sunday.

This was followed by a multi-faith prayer, after which the airline handed over boarding passes to the first guests to check in for the maiden flight.

N Shankar of the Sanmarg group gave floral presentations to the passengers while DGCA official Shanmugam and Assistant Commissioner of Police Vijaykumar handed over boarding passes.

NEW DELHI: The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued a list of 10 identity documents that can be used to gain entry to airport terminals and for checking in, dispelling confusion over the issue.

List of 10 identity documents issued by BCAS

1. Passport
2. Voter ID
3. Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar
4. Pan Card
5. Driving licence
6. Service ID
7. Student ID card
8. Passbook of account in a nationalised bank with photo
9. Pension card or pension documents with photo
10. Disability ID card or handicapped medical certificate

In a first, BCAS chief Kumar Rajesh Chandra has also put in place a system for flyers to establish their identity if they lose their ID cards. "In case of a passenger who for some valid reasons is not in a position to produce any of the above photo identity proofs, the identity certificate issued by a Group A gazetted officer of central/state government on his/her official letterhead with passenger's photo duly attested will be valid..." for this purpose," the BCAS said

BCAS also clarified that infants or minors accompanied by a guardian with a valid ID wouldn't need a separate proof for domestic air travel. Unaccompanied minors would .

Lack of infra takes flights from Chennai

CHENNAI: Chennai airport seems to be losing out on the regional boom as airlines are looking at Bengaluru and Hyderabad as hubs to position their flights to connect tier II and tier III cities.

IndiGo airlines has launched a large-scale expansion of regional routes but more than 30 flights of IndiGo connecting Rajahmundry and Tirupati to metros and tier II cities will be routed through Bengaluru, while only nine flights will be routed via Chennai hinting that infrastructure limitations are preventing airlines from routing flights via Chennai.

The flights will start in January.

IndiGo on Thursday announced expansion of its regional network by adding 63 new services to connect Tirupati and Rajahmundry on its existing network of Airbus 320s and ATRs.

The airline will connect Tirupati and Rajahmundry to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Dubai, Muscat, Singapore and other cities via Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mangalore. Bookings have begun for the flights which will start on January 9 and January 16.

The flights that will be routed via Chennai are: Port Blair-Rajahmundry, Kolkata-Rajahmundry, Rajahmundry-Singapore, Rajahmundry-Muscat.

Some of the new routes include Chennai-Rajahmundry via Hyderabad, Rajahmundry-Chennai via Hyderabad, Chennai-Tirupati via Bengaluru, Tirupati-Chennai via Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram -Tirupati via Bengaluru, Kochi -Rajahmundry via Bengaluru and others.

Passengers will have to change flights at the hub airports like Bengaluru and Chennai. This means that the airline has more options out of Bengaluru and Hyderabad than in Chennai. This is reflected in the schedule announced by IndiGo.

A senior official of Airports Authority of India (AAI) said that there were limitations in parking bays and slots for airlines in Chennai airport because of constraints like parking space, taxiways, availability of runways and others.

An airline official said that Chennai airport had problems in providing slots for flights during peak hours. "The demand for seats is high during peak hours because people want to travel out of the city early morning. However, it will lead to congestion if more flights are allowed in peak hours because parking bays are available only near second runway. But it will take time to bring the aircraft by crossing the main runway to reach the terminals to board passengers," he added.

5-hour closure of airport for arat

The Thiruvananthapuram international airport will remain closed for five hours from 4 p.m. on October 28 on account of the movement of the ‘arat’ of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple through the operational area of the airport to Shanghumughom.

All flight operations from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. had been suspended. Air India, the national carrier, has rescheduled three of its flights departing during the period on Saturday.

Air traffic congestion at Bengaluru airport affects flight services in Chennai

CHENNAI: One flight was cancelled and four arrivals from Bengaluru were delayed in Chennai due to air traffic congestion at Bengaluru airport on Wednesday.

Passengers of a Chennai -Pune IndiGo flight were stranded after the 11.40am flight was cancelled an hour before departure. The airline cited bad weather in Bengaluru as the reason. Planes are stuck in Bengaluru airport which is facing delays in flight operations.

"There was confusion after passengers received SMSes saying the flight is cancelled. Most of the people have arrived at the airport. The airline is accommodating people on Hyderabad flights and Mumbai flights," said a passenger who got accommodation in a Hyderabad flight which connects to Pune.

However, many were not happy because their trip got delayed by several hours.

Passenger dies on plane

A passenger on a Chennai-bound Indigo flight from Kolkata on Tuesday died just before the plane landed at the Chennai airport.

The passenger, identified as Ganesh Veerabahu, 65, a resident of Chennai, is believed to have suffered breathlessness mid-air. His wife Jaya, who accompanied him, alerted airline crew.

“The crew provided first aid and a medical emergency was declared on board,” said a source at the airport.

On landing, a medical team declared him dead.

NEW DELHI: Large personal electronic devices (PED) like laptops may soon be disallowed from check-in bags because of fears that their battery fire would go undetected, leading to possible catastrophes. In hand bags, on the other hand, cabin crew are now trained to handle PED fires as soon as anyone notices smoke emitting from the bag they are kept in. Just last week, a mobile phone caught fire on a Delhi-Indore flight which the cabin crew was able to quickly douse.

International aviation agencies have started considering banning big PEDs from check-in bags. Once a decision is taken by any leading aviation agency, India is also going to follow suit, said a senior DGCA official. Power banks, portable mobile chargers and e-cigarettes are already banned in check-in baggage in India.

The International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) dangerous goods panel is examining a working paper on "PEDs carried by passengers and crew" to address safety concerns regarding PEDs being stowed in checked baggage. The American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has submitted its test results in this ICAO paper, which concludes that fire in PED kept in cargo hold "could lead to loss of aircraft".

"FAA fire safety branch conducted 10 tests utilising a fully charged laptop computer inside a suitcase. A heater was placed against a lithium ion cell in the battery of a laptop to force it into thermal runaway.... it was concluded that if a PED is packed in a suitcase with an aerosol can and a thermal runaway event occurs, there is the potential for an aerosol can explosion.... (In some cases) the fire suppression system of the aircraft is then compromised, which could lead to the loss of the aircraft," the paper of ICAO, a UN agency, said. PEDs in passenger cabin are a safer bet as the cabin crew can take immediate action. Most consumer PEDs like cell phones, tablets and laptops are currently allowed in carry-on and checked baggage.

Water cooler unit installed opposite the new terminal

Passengers can now look forward to additional amenities at the Tiruchi International Airport.

Inaugurating a water cooler unit installed opposite the new international terminal building on Monday, Airport Director K. Gunasekaran told reporters that plans were afoot to sell international SIM cards, besides opening another food court and a fruit juice stall.

Provision of a water cooler was a long-pending demand of travellers, he said adding that the facility had been provided at a cost of Rs. 1.2 lakh.

To a query on the introduction of new flight services, Mr. Gunasekaran said he had no information. However, Airports Authority of India was discussing with operators introduction of more flights from Tiruchi.

The recently launched overseas flight service to Bangkok from Tiruchi by Thai AirAsia had received good patronage with full passenger load in both directions, he pointed out.

On the status of the runway expansion project, Mr. Gunasekaran said the State government had issued final notification a few days ago pertaining to land acquisition. Time had been given up to November 30 for the public to express their willingness, problems and compensation aspect.

Only after the completion of the exercise, land would be handed over to Airports Authority of India, he said and expressed the hope that the process would be completed in about three months.

Chennai airport customs officials seize gold worth Rs 63 lakh

CHENNAI: Customs officials at the Chennai airport have seized 2.13kg of gold worth Rs 63 lakh, in the last four days.

On Thursday night, 597gm of gold worth Rs 17.7 lakh was seized from a passenger who arrived here from Colombo. The gold was concealed inside two oil pistons.

On Friday, 548gm of gold worth Rs 16 lakh was seized from a passenger from Dubai who had concealed it in his undergarment.

Now the chairman of the Railway Board, Lohani has said he will clear the plan if AI puts it up again.

"If AI approaches us with this proposal, we will accept it," Lohani told TOI.

A large number of people end up with unconfirmed AC-II Rajdhani tickets almost every day due to a severe demand-supply crunch in the railways. In a bid to boost AI's aircraft occupancy, "turnaround man" Lohani had planned that such people's contact details could be automatically shared with AI, which could then offer them seats on flights for the same destination at competitive rates.

"AC-II Rajdhani fares are more or less similar to air fares," Lohani said.

However, with the process to privatise or sell government-owned AI now in its final stages, it remains to be seen if the airline goes for such a proposal.

"A benefit of having a government-owned airline... (is that) railways can transfer its unconfirmed premium passengers to state-owned AI. Lohani's idea is very good. But can railways do the same with a private AI or any other private airline without facing charges of benefitting them?" asked an AI insider.

Senior IAS officer Rajiv Bansal, who was given additional charge as AI chairman for three months in August-end, when Lohani was moved to the Railway Board, said he would not be immediately able to comment on the proposal. "This is the first time I am hearing of such a thing. There is difference in train and air fares..." he said.

Around the same time that he came up with the train-air switch idea, AI had also decided to match Rajdhani AC-II fares on important metro routes like Delhi to Mumbai.

AI insiders said the airline's focus currently was to safely run its flights on time till a new owner is found.

சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தில் இருந்து சிங்கப்பூர் செல்ல வேண்டிய ஏர் இந்தியா விமானத்தில் தொழில்நுட்பக் கோளாறு ஏற்பட்டதால் பயணிகள் பெரிதும் அவதிக்குள்ளாகினர். 
சென்னை விமான நிலையத்திலிருந்து ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை காலை 11.30 மணி அளவில் ஏர் இந்தியா விமானம் மூலம் சிங்கப்பூர் செல்வதற்காக 230 பயணிகள் தயாராக இருந்தனர். பல மணிநேரமாகியும் விமானம் புறப்படுவதில் தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டது. இது குறித்து விமான நிர்வாகத்தின் சார்பில் தங்களுக்கு எந்தத் தகவலும் அளிக்கப்படவில்லை என பயணிகள் புகார் தெரிவித்தனர். 
மாலை 6.30 வரை பயணிகள் தங்குவதற்காக ஏர் இந்தியா நிர்வாகத்தின் சார்பில் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்படவில்லை எனத் தெரிகிறது. 
இதுகுறித்து ஏர் இந்தியா நிர்வாகத்தினர் கூறுகையில், தொழில்நுட்பக் கோளாறு காரணமாக விமானம் புறப்படுவதில் கால தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. ஒரே நேரத்தில் 250-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் தங்குவதற்காக விடுதிகள் ஏற்பாடு செய்வதில் சற்று சிரமம் ஏற்பட்டது. தற்போது பயணிகளுக்கு தங்கும் வசதி செய்து கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதையடுத்து திங்கள்கிழமை (அக். 23) காலை 9 மணிக்கு பயணிகள் சிங்கப்பூர் செல்ல மாற்று விமானம் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டு உள்ளது என்றனர்.

சென்னை: சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தில் இருந்து சிங்கப்பூர் செல்ல வேண்டிய பயணிகள் பயணம் செய்ய முடியாமல் தவித்து வருகின்றனர். 

சென்னையில் இருந்து இன்று (அக்.,22) காலை 11.30 மணி அளவில் சிங்கப்பூருக்கு செல்ல பயணிகள் தயாராக இருந்தனர். தொடர்ந்து பல மணிநேரமாகியும் விமானம் புறப்படுவதில் தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டது. இதனால் பயணிகள் கால தாமதம் ஏற்படுவதாக புகார் கூறினர். 

விமானத்தில் இயந்திர கோளாறு காரணமாக விமானம் புறப்படுவதில் கால தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டதாக கூறப்படுகிறது. இது குறித்து ஏர் இந்தியா விமானத்தின் மக்கள் தொடர்பு அதிகாரி விஜயராகவன் கூறுகையில் பயணிகளுக்கு தங்கும் இட வசதிகள் செய்து தரப்பட்டு உள்ளதாகவும், நாளை (அக்., 23 ) காலை 9 மணிக்கு பயணிகள் சிங்கப்பூர் செல்ல மாற்று விமானம் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டு உள்ளதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

Airport to battle delays caused by small planes

CHENNAI: While travellers are welcoming the operation of small planes to tier III cities to boost regional connectivity, there is a flip side -the skies will be more crowded, impacting the aircraft handling capacity of airports.

In a bid to prevent these small and slow aircraft from causing delays, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has lined up a series of steps to cut down the runway occu pancy time of planes at Chennai airport.

Worried that an increase in small plane traffic will slow down operations, the AAI is planning to sensitise pilots and air traffic controllers, commission simultaneous use of the main runway and second runway (crossrunway operations) and spe ed up construction of two rapid exit taxiways. AAI is planning to start cross-runway operations in December.

70-seater planes like ATRs and Bombardier Q400 have a slow climb rate after take-off and cruise at approximately 500kmph at 21,000ft. More such planes in the air would lead to more distance between planes as they are lined up to land at the airport. Indigo, SpiceJet and Jet Airways are gearing up to fly smaller planes to capture regional markets and also bid for routes.

Airports around the world are seeking to reduce the runway occupancy time of planes so that more slots can be given for landing and take-off. This warrants a runway exit strategy for pilots, enabling them to react promptly to take-off clearance and line up on the taxiway without delays.

A European programme has found that a five-second loss per aircraft can result in two missed runway slots per hour, says a report by Melbourne airport.

A senior AAI official said that meetings are being held on runway safety and utilisation. "The air traffic control procedures call for flights to be handled in a way that augments the runway's capacity. This has enabled the airport to handle 40 planes in an hour though the actual movement is only 28 planes per hour.

Airport director G Chandramouli said, "A lot of small planes will be flying as Udan will open up Salem, Belagavi and Mysuru. We may have to use the second runway for smaller planes and bring passengers by buses.Cross-runway operations and rapid exit taxiways are being planned to cut runway occupancy time. The airport now has an angular taxiway which helps planes exit the runway quicker."

It is estimated that airlines would be deploying more than 200 small aircraft in the next eight years.

Airlines are launching 70-seater flights to tier II and tier III cities as short traffic of up to 1,000km or less has seen an increase in demand.

IndiGo is launching its ATR flights by mid-December connecting Chennai to Mangaluru and Rajahmundry while SpiceJet will soon fly to Belagavi.
