Krishnagiri: Tamil Nadu BJP appears to be divided on the issue of the state government hiking bus fares with state unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan and Union minister of state for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan publicly contradicting each other.

Speaking to reporters in Hosur on Sunday, Radhakrishnan said he saw nothing wrong in the hike in bus fares since such things are decided according to the prevailing situation.

“They should have done this long back when the prices of fuel and other commodities increased, but they failed to do as since they were afraid of losing votes. They have come out with announcement on fare hike after six years which, according to me, is not a mistake,” Radhakrishnan told reporters here.

He also said the state government would not have had to face strong protests if it had increased the fares periodically instead of doing it at one go. “People seem to be upset because the fare hike has been imposed on them at one go,” he said.

Radhakrishnan’s comments contradict the Tamil Nadu BJP which has outright rejected the fare hike and has also called for a protest across the state on January 24. TN BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan opposed the hike when the announcement came on Friday and reiterated her stand on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, the BJP leader sought to know from the sate government why it increased the salary of MLAs when the state was reeling under financial crisis. "The bus fare hike is anti-people and the BJP strongly opposes the measure," she said.

Chennai book fair to end today, 12 lakh books sold

Chennai: The 44th Chennai book fair, organised by the Booksellers’ and Publishers’ Association of South India (BAPASI), which has been witnessing overwhelming footfalls is all set to draw its curtains on Monday.

“The book fair has received an increased footfall this year, as more than 11 lakh readers have visited the fair until Sunday, which is higher than the previous year”, P. Mailavelan, Vice president, BAPASI, said.

Apart from increased footfall, the book fair has also registered higher sales this year. “During the 2017 book fair, we had sold 10 lakh books on the whole. But we have sold more than 12 lakh books this year. With one day remaining, we expect more sales,” he said.

The 13-day book festival has been conducted at Saint George Anglo-Indian Higher secondary school, Aminjikarai, with 708 stalls and 376 publishers. The books are being sold at 10 percent discount on actual cost, which is also a reason for the success of the fair.

To instil general knowledge in addition to subject knowledge, district education officials of Thiruvannamalai have sent 1,000 government school teachers to buy books, on Sunday. “This is the first time when the education department took this kind of initiative. The teachers stayed at the fair the whole day boosting the sales”, Mailavelan added.

The teachers said that the district authority had offered `1,000 each to buy books. “The higher officials insisted that we have to read a variety of books so that we could educate students on the wider manner”, one of the teachers said.

ITI student hacked to death by gang in Chennai

CHENNAI: An ITI student, aged 18, was allegedly chased and hacked to death by a gang at Nungambakkam here in the wee hours of Saturday.

The victim was identified by police as Ranjith, studying first year polytechnic at Guindy ITI.

“On Friday, he had informed his mother that he was going to attend a birthday function and would return late. Around midnight, his mother spoke to him over phone. Ranjith had said he was boarding a train from Beach station to reach Nungambakkam. He got off at Nungambakkam when some persons attacked him near the railway station and slit his throat. Ranjith tried to escape, but collapsed on Tank Bund Road and died”, said a police official.

A resident of Mangal Nagar at Choolaimedu, alerted police. The police have taken CCTV footage from the locality which showed Ranjith running holding his bleeding neck with his hand for about 50 metres. “The footage also showed two bikes following Ranjith who we suspect to have committed the crime,” the official said.

The official further added that only after the suspects are arrested the motive will be known.

Nungambakkam police sent the body to Government Hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

Police said Ranjith stayed with his father Ramesh, a carpenter and his mother, a home maker at Appu Street, Nungambakkam.

Re-fix seniority of technical SIs, HC tells govt

Chennai: Stop treating unequals as equals and stop mindless application of service rules while preparing seniority list of technical persons in police department, Madras high court has told the government. 

The issue pertains to the practice of deciding the seniority list of police personnel working in the technical wing of the department based on the marks obtained in general training provided in police training college, without due weightage to marks obtained in special technical training exclusively provided to technical personnel.

P K Murugan, a sub inspector (technical), attached to police telecommunication branch, Virudhunagar approached the court to quash a recent seniority list and direct the department to refix seniority based on marks obtained in technical training.

Allowing the petition, Justice V Parthiban said: "The rules are very clear that due emphasis was placed on the technical knowledge of the personnel to be recruited as sub inspectors (technical). Elaborate training has also been provided on the technical side for the purpose of handling their job. Such technical posts are not interchangeable and they have to remain on technical side till retirement. They are not vested with the normal power of even registration of FIRs."

Such being the case, it is rather preposterous that the administration has given undue weightage only to the proficiency of such technical personnel in general training, completely wishing away their proficiency in the technical training, he added.

No pension for anti-Hindi agitators: HC

Chennai: Giving pension to those who had participated in the anti-Hindi agitation would amount to encouraging agitations against a particular language, said the Madras high court, adding, "If the trend is allowed to continue, integrity of the country would be at stake." 

Justice R Suresh Kumar dismissed a plea of S Chokalingam seeking pension on the ground that he had been jailed thrice for taking part in agitations in Tirupur and Avinashi.

Madras varsity to host UK students this year

  CHENNAI: This summer, a group of college students from the United Kingdom might well be spotted studying the musical traditions of Thanjavur or traditional medicinal plants in Chennai, guided by professors of University of Madras. 

The 161-year-old university will host a set of students from the UK, for a two to three weeks long residential summer school programme (RSSP). This is a part of a scheme where the students are given a travel grant by Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), to participate in programmes in the member institutions like the Madras University.

Basic sciences and humanities departments like botany, biochemistry, women studies, anthropology, English literature and management studies have submitted proposals for conducting special classes and workshops.

Local study tours and field trips will also be part of the programme to be hosted by the International Centre for University of Madras (ICOM), a professor from the university said. The students will be put up in the university's hostels for international students.

This is the first time the university will be seen participating in such an initiative and it has been planned to position the institution as a favourable destination for foreign students. "Individual departments have been attracting foreign students, but this is the first time it is happening at a university level," said the professor.

To the envy of plane-weary travellers everywhere, passengers aboard a Norwegian Airlines flight from New York to London on January 15 were treated to a pleasant surprise: They arrived 53 minutes ahead of schedule, making theirs the fastest transatlantic flight ever recorded on a subsonic commercial aircraft. The final flight time: five hours and 13 minutes.

The good time came thanks to better-than-expected weather conditions and a hefty tailwind, which helped the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner gain three minutes over the previous record, held by a 2015 British Airways route that spanned five hours and 16 minutes. Still, the Norwegian flight’s captain said an even-faster time may be in the cards. “We were actually in the air

for just over five hours, and if it had not been for forecasted turbulence at lower altitude, we could have flown even faster,” said Captain Harold van Dam at Norwegian in a statement.

The time is nothing compared to what was possible on the Concorde, the sky-high-priced supersonic plane that could cross the Atlantic in a sprightly 3.5 hours and ceased operation in 2003. Supersonic air travel, while faster, is fairly controversial: It can create such unpleasant groundlevel disturbances as shattered windows, cracked plaster and very confused farm animals. For this reason, supersonic travel has mostly been banned since 1973.

But there’s hope yet for those desperate to shave more time off their New York to London route: Nasa announced in 2017 that it would accept bids for construction of a demo model for a supersonic aircraft with a low-level sonic boom. Peter Coen, project manager for Nasa’s commercial supersonic research team, told Bloomberg that growth in air travel and distances flown “will drive the demand for broadly available faster air travel,” making it possible for companies to “offer competitive products in the future.”

Nasa is aiming for a sound level of 60 to 65 A-weighted decibels (dBa), which is roughly the volume of a highway-bound luxury car or background conversation in a lively restaurant. Then again, why settle for supersonic travel when you can have hypersonic travel? Elon Musk’s proposed SpaceX Air would ostensibly fly through space at 17,000 miles per hour, potentially landing a New Yorker in Shanghai in 39 minutes flat.

In September, Musk said the flight should cost no more than the current price of a full-fare economy seat in a traditional aircraft, which at the time was $2,908 from China Eastern Airlines. BLOOMBERG

Chennai: In the wake of the shutdown of the US government, the US consulate in Chennai has clarified that its services, including issuance of visas, will continue to function during the “lapse in Congressional appropriations.”

“If you have a scheduled visa interview or American Citizen Services appointment, please arrive at the consulate at your designated time,” said an official post by the office. The consulates in other cities too are continuing their services unaffected by theshut down, said sources.

The shutdown is a result of the deadlock between the Democrats and Republicans, over immigration and security issues and a disagreement in funding US government operations.

However, the American Center has been closed since Saturday until further notice. This means that the American Library on the premises will also remain closed temporarily. Since its establishment in 1947, the American Center has been a platform for south Indians and Americans to connect on issues of common and global interest.

The library houses more than 15,000 books, including collections in the social sciences, business, management, and American literature, and provides a wide range of information on the US. The American Center is likely to remain closed tillthe main US political parties pass a bill to fund the government.

Lufthansa may be 1st to offer WiFi on flights to, from & over India

New Delhi: A day after India allowed in flight connectivity (IFC) in its skies, German major Lufthansa has announced it willoffer Wi-Fion itsflightsto, from and over India the moment “it is allowed to”. Lufthansa Group South Asia head Wolfgang Will told TOI that the airline offers Wi-Fi on all its long haul flights. “Till now we had to switch off the service on entering Indian airspace. Now as soon as we get all the regulatory clearances, we will provide this service on our flights to, from and over India,” Will said.

This will mean flyers taking off from, headed for and overflying India will get the paid-Internet Lufthansa offers on its long haul flights. TRAI has said airlines can provide this service the moment a plane starts taxiing and personal electronic devices are put on flight mode. “We offer Internet packages, Flynet, starting at Euro 9 and going toEuro 17depending on the duration it is bought for ranging from an hour to 24 hours,” Wills, Lufthansa’s south Asia senior director, said.

Despite minister’s promise, CBSE says no change in NEET syllabus

Chennai: Contrary to Union education minister Prakash Javadekar’s announcement that syllabi of all state boards might be considered while preparing question papers for NEET 2018, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared there will be no change in the syllabus.

A notification from CBSE, which conducts the nationallevel medical entrance test, said the syllabus for NEET (UG) 2018 would be the same as for NEET (UG) 2017. This suggests CBSE students would continue to have an edge over students of state board schools in places like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, say experts, as NEET syllabus was based on National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books used mostly in CBSE schools.

Javadekar’s announcement, earlier this week, evoked a mixed response. While parents of CBSE students protested against the decision to rejig the syllabus with hardly 100 days left for the exam, students from non-CBSE schools heaved a sigh of relief. Dr S Kasi of the Doctors Forum for People’s Health said, “The only possible change we are looking this year is a uniform question paper.” Last year, different question papers were printed for candidates who took NEET in different languages.

CBSE justified it saying other competitive exams like JEE (Advanced) were conducted in similar manner, but the Supreme Court directed it to set a common paper and translate it into regional languages.

Ashok Shankar of the TN CBSE Schools Management Association said these statements were unwarranted while the state education ministry was travelling in the right path by creating awareness on NEET and conducting capacitybuilding programmes to bridge the gap between CBSE and state syllabus. “It was practically impossible to include allstate syllabi. Besides, these kind of statements in the lastminute would distract the students.”

NEET was unnecessary and more efforts are needed to strengthen the state syllabus, said C S Rex Sargunam, retired director of Egmore Government Children’s Hospital. Doctors Association for Social Equality (DASE) reiterated that NEET was based largely on CBSE syllabus and the state government should try to get the President’s nod for two bills passed in the state assembly seeking permanent exemption for the state from NEET.

University grants only two attempts beyond course period to clear UG, PG

Henceforth, undergraduate and postgraduate students of Bharathidasan University, many of whom fail to clear the backlog of subjects even two years after the end of the course, will not get unlimited chances to pass out.

According to the UGC guidelines adopted by the university, they will get only two more chances to clear their pending papers.

A statement from the university said it adopted the University Grants Commission’s norm to determine a uniform period within which a student may be allowed to qualify for a degree. Under exceptional circumstances, he or she may get another year to clear the arrears but not the unlimited chances the students had been enjoying so far. This rule will be implemented in all affiliated colleges of the university, Sources pointed out that those who studied in Bharathidasan University or affiliated institutions would be regarded as private students if they had to clear the backlog after the course was over. Students whose courses ended in 2017 would get only one more chance to write the exams since they had an opportunity to appear in the November semester exam.

While the University Grants Commission (UGC) had formulated the guideline in 2015, it was not adopted by many universities and many weren’t even aware of it.

Anna University was the first to adopt the guideline as part of efforts to restrict students having a backlog for as many as seven years continuing to appear for examinations with the regular students.

“We were preparing too many question papers which were affecting our regular students. Candidates who failed to clear arrears even seven years after the course will now be allowed to write the exams separately and only two more times in February and August 2018,” the official said.

Further, every district will be allocated only one centre to write the exams in the state. “We have now found that only 12,000 out of the 40,000 candidates who applied with arrears to clear are eligible to reappear under the new norm,” said the source. When contacted, higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal said that Madras University and some other universities had also adopted the guidelines as a resolution but the problem was especially acute in Anna University. 

Three city universities likely to get their VCs by March

Chennai: By March, three premier city-based universities, two of which have remained headless for more than a year, are likely to get new vice-chancellors.

After the term of M Rajaram as Anna University vicechancellor ended in May 2016, two search committees were formed to find his replacement before being disbanded. Now, the third committee — chaired by former Supreme Court judge V S Sirpurkar, along with former IAS officer N Sundaradevan as the government nominee, and IIT Madras professor R Gnanamoorthy as the university syndicate’s nominee — has called for applications. The last date for submitting applications is February 1.

Former Anna University vice-chancellor M Anandakrishnan said the situation of premier institutes remaining without a head for such a long time was “unfortunate”. “Institutions have never been without heads for this long. Fortunately, new rules are putting an end of corruption. The decision to increase the qualifications for VCis a good move,” he told TOI.

State higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal said as per the new guidelines, the recruitment process was tightened. “We got good VCs for Bharathidasan University and Periyar University in a short span of time. The new committeeisexpectedtofinalise names soon. By Marchend we should have a new VC for Anna University,” he said.

Simultaneously, search committees appointed for Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU) and Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas) will begin the recruitment process. While the post of vice-chancellor for Tanuvas fell vacant a month ago, thelaw university has been headless since December 2016. The search committees toboththeseuniversitieswill receive applications till February 12.

The TNDALU search committee includes Justice S Jagadeesan, former judge of the Madras high court as chairman and S Sivakumar, member, Law Commission of India, and T Audiseshan, former TNDALU VC. “Notifications for the applications have been issued. We can expect an outcome in a couple of months,” said a law university source.

By then, Tanuvas will also finalise names of three probable candidates. “After the application deadline, it may take up to two weeks to scrutinise the applications and a final list can be made by first week of March,” said VC incharge Dr T J Harikrishnan. 

Police stop 9-year-old’s marriage to 39-yr-old man

Trichy: The state’s infamous child marriages have hit a new low with the police preventing the wedding of a nine-year-old girl to a 39-year-old man in a village near Musiri on Thursday. The girl, who has not even attained puberty, is being given care and protection at a government reception home in Trichy.

An anonymous call to the all-woman police station (AWPS) in Musiri spurred police into action. The caller said that he had received information about talks going on for getting a girl studying in Class IV engaged to a man 30 years her senior. However, officials expressed shock that a girl below 10 years was being forced into marriage.

‘Reports showed there was a proposal for the marriage’

Inspector of police Latha and her team who rushed to Minnathampatti village in Thottiyam taluk found something amiss, indicating that the information could be true. Hence, they rescued the girl from her widowed mother, an agriculture coolie, and handed her over to the child welfare committee (CWC) in the night. The CWC inquiry confirmed that arrangements were going on for marrying off the girl. “Preliminary reports showed that there was a proposal for the marriage. The girl is being kept under our care. We are awaiting reports in this regard after which we will decide on her future,” CWC chairperson Trichy S Indira Gandhi told TOI.

However, the police inquiry with villagers revealed that it was a common practice in their community to fix the marriage of a minor girl in advance with a groom who was a blood relation. This was intended to “keep the relationship intact”. The police said that it was a confirmation for the marriage that would take place once the girl attained puberty.

However, the officials expressed shock at the revelation that a girl below ten years was being forced into child marriage. “The proposal for child marriage to a girl at such a tender age is very rare in Trichy,” said district social welfare officer (DSWO) S Usha. The prohibition of child marriage Act, 2006 had provisions that allowed the police to arrest those including the bridegroom in case of the conduct of a child marriage. However, the police remained reluctant to invoke the stringent provisions of the law against the erring persons.

சேலம் மாவட்டத்தில் மேட்டூர், ஏற்காடு போன்ற சுற்றுலா தலங்கள் உள்ளன. மேட்டூருக்கு சேலம், ஈரோடு உள்பட பல்வேறு மாவட்டங்களில் இருந்து ஏராளமானோர் சுற்றுலா வந்து செல்கிறார்கள். இவ்வாறு வரும் சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் மேட்டூர் அணை, பூங்கா ஆகியவற்றை பார்த்து ரசித்து செல்கிறார்கள். சிறுவர், சிறுமிகள் மேட்டூர் பூங்காவில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள விளையாட்டு சாதனங்களில் விளையாடி மகிழ்வார்கள். குறிப்பாக விடுமுறை தினங்களில் மேட்டூரில் சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் கூட்டம் அதிகமாக இருக்கும். அங்குள்ள அணைக்கட்டு முனியப்பன் கோவிலுக்கும் திரளானவர்கள் வந்து செல்வார்கள்.

  தற்போது தமிழக அரசு பஸ் கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தி உள்ளது. முன்பு சேலத்தில் இருந்து மேட்டூர் செல்ல அரசு பஸ்சில் கட்டணம் ரூ.24 ஆக இருந்தது. தற்போது ரூ.36 ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதனால் விடுமுறை தினமான நேற்று மேட்டூருக்கு சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் வருகை குறைவாக இருந்தது. பஸ்களிலும் சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் கூட்டம் குறைவாகவே காணப்பட்டது.

ஏற்காடு

இதேபோல் ஏற்காடுக்கும் நேற்று சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் வருகை குறைவாக இருந்தது. சுற்றுலா தலமான ஏற்காட்டில் சேர்வராயன் கோவில், ராஜேஸ்வரி கோவில், பொட்டானிக்கல் கார்டன், லேடீஸ் சீட், ஜென்ஸ் சீட், பக்கோடா பாய்ண்ட், ரோஜா தோட்டம், படகு இல்லம் உள்ளிட்ட பல இடங்கள் உள்ளன. சுற்றுலா வருபவர்கள் இந்த இடங்களுக்கு செல்ல தவறுவது இல்லை. விடுமுறை நாட்களில் ஏற்காடுக்கு சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் வருகை அதிகமாக இருக்கும். சேலம் மாவட்டம் மட்டுமின்றி சென்னை, கோவை, திருப்பூர் உள்ளிட்ட பல மாவட்டங்களில் இருந்தும், கர்நாடகா, கேரளா போன்ற மாநிலங்களில் இருந்தும் வந்து செல்வார்கள்.

பஸ் கட்டணத்தை தமிழக அரசு கடந்த 19-ந்தேதி இரவு அதிரடியாக உயர்த்தியது. கட்டண உயர்வு நேற்று முன்தினம் முதல் அமலுக்கு வந்தது. இதுவரை இல்லாத அளவுக்கு பஸ் கட்டணம் வெகுவாகவே உயர்த்தப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதனால் பஸ் போக்குவரத்தை மட்டுமே நம்பியிருந்த பயணிகள் கடும் கண்டனம் தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர்.

  வெளியூர் செல்லும் பஸ்களிலும் கட்டணம் அதிகமாக உயர்த்தப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதனால் வெளியூர் செல்லும் பயணிகள் கடும் கலக்கத்தில் உள்ளனர். ரெயில்களில் கூட்ட நெரிசலை தவிர்க்கும் விதமாக, பயணிகள் அடுத்தகட்டமாக தேர்வு செய்வது பஸ் பயணங்களையே. ஆனால் கட்டண உயர்வு பஸ் பயணத்தையும் பயணிகள் மத்தியில் யோசிக்க வைத்துவிட்டது.

இதனால் பெரும்பாலான பயணிகள் ரெயில் பயணத்திற்கு மாறி விட்டனர். பாதுகாப்பான பயணம், கட்டணமும் குறைவு என்பதால் ரெயில் நிலையங்களில் பயணிகள் கூட்டம் அலைமோதுகிறது.

சென்னையில் எழும்பூர், சென்டிரல் உள்ளிட்ட முக்கிய ரெயில் நிலையங்களில் நேற்று தீபாவளி, பொங்கல் உள்ளிட்ட பண்டிகை காலங்களில் எவ்வளவு கூட்டம் இருக்குமோ? அதேபோன்ற பயணிகள் கூட்டத்தை பார்க்க முடிந்தது. குறிப்பாக தென் மாவட்டங்களுக்கு செல்லும் பாண்டியன், வைகை, அனந்தபுரி, நெல்லை, முத்துநகர், ராமேசுவரம், பொதிகை, மலைக்கோட்டை, திருச்செந்தூர் உள்ளிட்ட எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரெயில்களில் பயணிகள் கூட்டம் மிகுதியாகவே இருந்தது. முன்பதிவு இல்லாத பெட்டிகளில் இடம்பிடித்து விடும் நோக்கில் பயணிகள் முண்டியடித்து ஏறினர். இதேபோல் சென்னையில் மின்சார ரெயில்களிலும் கூட்டம் அதிக அளவில் காணப்பட்டது.

இதுகுறித்து பயணிகள் சிலர் கூறுகையில், “பஸ் கட்டணம் எங்களை மலைக்க வைப்பதாக உள்ளது. உதாரணமாக 5 பேர் உள்ள ஒரு குடும்பத்துக்கு ரூ.1,000 முதல் ரூ.1,500 வரை கூடுதலாக செலவாகிறது. இது நடுத்தர குடும்பத்துக்கு பெரிய சிக்கல் தான்.

இதனால் நெரிசலில் சிக்கினாலும் பரவாயில்லை என்று ரெயிலில் பயணம் செய்யும் முடிவுக்கு வருகிறோம். ரெயில்களில் கூட்டம் மிகுதியாக உள்ளது. எனவே தேவையை உணர்ந்து சிறிது காலம் சிறப்பு ரெயில்கள் இயக்கப்பட்டால் நன்றாக இருக்கும்”, என்றனர்.

பயணிகள் தேவையை உணர்ந்து, ரெயிலில் அமர இடம்பிடித்து காசு பார்க்கும் வேலையையும் சிலர் செய்தனர். முன்பதிவில்லா ரெயில் பெட்டிகளில் ஏற நீண்ட வரிசையில் சிலர் காத்திருந்து, பெட்டிகளில் இடம்பிடித்து, அந்த இடத்தை குறிப்பிட்ட தொகைக்கு பயணிகளுக்கு விட்டுக்கொடுத்தனர்.

அந்தவகையில் அவர்கள் நேற்று ஒரு இருக்கைக்கு ரூ.80 வரையில் பயணிகளிடம் வசூல் வேட்டை நடத்தினர். அதிலும் ஜன்னல் ஓரத்தில் உள்ள இருக்கை என்றால் ரூ.100-க்கு பேரம் பேசினர். அவசர கோலத்தில் வரும் பயணிகள் எப்படியாவது இடம் கிடைத்தால் போதும் என்ற நினைப்பில் கேட்ட தொகையை பேரம் பேசாமல் கொடுத்து செல்வதையும் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. இதனை தடுக்க ரெயில்வே நிர்வாகம் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டுமென பொதுமக்கள் கோரிக்கை விடுத்து உள்ளனர்.

லஞ்சம் வாங்க மாட்டோம்

மத்திய அரசாங்கத்தின் பணியாளர் நலன் மற்றும் பயிற்சித்துறை ஒரு உத்தரவை பிறப்பித்துள்ளது. நாட்டில் உள்ள 5,004 ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். அதிகாரிகளும் இந்த மாதம் 31–ந் தேதிக்குள் தங்கள் சொத்துக்கணக்கை தாக்கல் செய்ய வேண்டும். அப்படி அவர்கள் தாக்கல் செய்யாவிட்டால், அவர்களுடைய பதவி உயர்வின்போதும், வெளிநாட்டு பணிக்காக அனுப்பப்படும்போதும் லஞ்ச ஒழிப்புத்துறை கொடுக்க வேண்டிய ஒப்புதல் வழங்கப்படமாட்டாது. இதுதொடர்பாக அந்தத்துறை மத்திய அரசாங்கத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து துறைகளுக்கும், மாநில அரசுகளுக்கும், யூனியன் பிரதேசங்களுக்கும் கடிதம் அனுப்பியுள்ளது. அதில், நிர்வாகத்தில் பணியாற்றும் ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். அதிகாரிகள் தங்களிடம் உள்ள அசையா சொத்துகள் பற்றிய விவரங்களை தாக்கல் செய்ய வேண்டும். ஏற்கனவே 2011–ம் ஆண்டே 1–1–2018–ல் அதிகாரிகள் தங்களுடைய அசையா சொத்துகள் பற்றிய விவரங்களை தெரிவிக்காவிட்டால் அவர்களுக்கு லஞ்ச ஒழிப்புத்துறை ஒப்புதல் கிடையாது. அவர்கள் பதவி உயர்வுக்காக மத்திய அரசாங்கத்தில் உள்ள முதல்நிலை பணிகளுக்கான பட்டியலில் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளமாட்டார்கள் என்று ஒரு உத்தரவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்த உத்தரவு தமிழ்நாட்டில் பணிபுரியும் 376 ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். அதிகாரிகளுக்கும் பொருந்தும். நிச்சயமாக இதுபோன்ற உத்தரவுகள் வரவேற்கத்தக்கவையாகும். ஏனெனில், ஊழல் என்பது ஒரு புற்றுநோய் போன்றது. சமுதாயத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து துறைகளிலும் ஊழல் புறையோடி போயிருப்பதால்தான் பல முன்னேற்றங்கள் தடைபட்டுள்ளன. திறமைகள் மங்கிப்போய் விடுகின்றன. ஊழல் ஒழிக்கப்பட்டு, வெளிப்படையான நிர்வாகம் இருக்கவேண்டுமென்றால் நிச்சயமாக அதில் அதிகாரிகள், அரசு ஊழியர்களின் பங்கு இன்றியமையாதது.

அரசு ஊழியர்கள் கை சுத்தமாக இருந்தால், ஆட்சியில் உள்ளவர்களால் எந்த ஊழல் நடவடிக்கைகளிலும் ஈடுபட முடியாது. ஏனெனில், ஆட்சியில் உள்ளவர்கள் ஏதாவது ஊழல் செய்து முறைகேட்டில் ஈடுபடவேண்டுமென்றால், அதற்கான உத்தரவுகளை அரசு அதிகாரிகள்தான் பிறப்பிக்க வேண்டும். அரசு அதிகாரிகள் உத்தரவை பிறப்பித்தாலும், கீழ்மட்டத்தில் உள்ள அரசு ஊழியர்கள் அந்த முறைகேடுகளுக்கு ஏற்ற வகையில் கோப்புகளை தயார் செய்தால்தான் அதிகாரிகளும் உத்தரவு பிறப்பிக்க முடியும். ஆட்சியில் உள்ளவர்களும் ஊழல் செய்ய முடியும். அந்த வகையில், அரசு ஊழியர்கள் நேர்மையாக திறம்பட செயல்பட்டால் நிர்வாகம் செம்மைப்படும். நிர்வாகத்தில் தூய்மை ஏற்பட ஆட்சியில் உள்ளவர்களும், அதை தங்கள் முக்கிய குறிக்கோளாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். ஆட்சியில் உள்ளவர்கள் ஊழல்செய்ய அதிகாரிகளும், அரசு ஊழியர்களும் துணைபோகக்கூடாது. அதுபோல, அதிகாரிகளும், அரசு ஊழியர்களும் ஊழல்செய்ய, ஆட்சியில் உள்ளவர்கள் உறுதுணையாக இருக்கக்கூடாது. இவையெல்லாம் நடக்கவேண்டுமென்றால், எல்லோருடைய மனப்பக்குவமும் மாற வேண்டும். ஊழலை கண்டுபிடிக்கும் ஊழல் கண்காணிப்புத்துறை, லஞ்ச ஒழிப்புத்துறை மிகத்தீவிரமாக செயல்பட வேண்டும். தூய்மையான, வெளிப்படையான நிர்வாகம் இருந்தால் நிச்சயமாக அங்கு ஊழலுக்கு இடம் இருக்காது. நாடு முழுவதும் உள்ள மத்திய அரசு ஊழியர்கள் குறிப்பாக தமிழக அரசில் உள்ள ஊழியர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரு உறுதிப்பாட்டை எடுத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். நாங்களும் லஞ்சம் வாங்க மாட்டோம், லஞ்சம் தலையெடுக்கவும் விடவே மாட்டோம் என்ற உறுதியோடு செயல்பட்டால், ஒரு தூய்மையான, வேகமாக செயல்படும் அரசாக திகழ முடியும்.

Class 12 Boy Guns Down School Principal After Scolding for Mobile Phone Use

Yamunanagar: A class 12 student of a private school allegedly shot dead the principal within the school premises on Saturday, reportedly after being scolded for using his mobile phone in the school three days ago.

The accused student fired four shots at Ritu Chhabra, principal of Swami Vivekananda School, with a .9mm pistol and critically injured her, police said. The four bullets hit her in the chest, stomach and shoulder, Yamunanagar Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kalia said.

The incident took place between 11:30 and 12 noon. Chhabra succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, DSP Desh Raj said.

After shooting the school principal, the 18-year-old commerce student tried to flee. However, a couple of parents, who were present for the parents-teachers meet in the school premises, caught hold him of with the help of locals, the SP said.

The student was thrashed by angry locals and then handed over to the police, an official said.

During preliminary investigation, the accused student told the police that he was upset with the school principal for allegedly reprimanding him a couple of times. "He had a grudge against the school principal for reprimanding him few times in front of his class mates on the complaint of teachers," the SP said adding that he was not attending school for the past few days.

The SP said the police were also investigating whether the accused was taking drugs. "He was supposed to attend his tuitions today. But rather than going to tuitions, he went to the school," the officer said. As he was a school student, he was allowed to meet the school principal, SP Kalia said.

"He talked to the Principal for some time and then came out. He then again entered the principal's room and opened fire at her with the revolver," said the SP.

During investigation, it came to light that the student stole his father's licensed revolver by breaking the wooden Almirah at his home. He took the revolver without the knowledge of his parents, Kalia said. The accused student's father is a financier and a landlord in Yamunanagar, he said.

"He has confessed to his crime and weapon has also been recovered. He will be presented before the court the tomorrow," he said.

The accused student has been booked for murder under section 302 of the IPC, said the police.

Not a NEET idea to consider State board syllabi, say students

NEW DELHI: Students, parents and teachers from various parts of the country have written to the Union government against its decision to rejig the syllabus for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) less than 100 days before the examination.

Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, in an interview with The New Indian Express on Wednesday had said that from this year, all State syllabi will be taken into consideration while preparing examination papers for NEET — the test for entrance into MBBS and dental courses.

This, the minister, had said was being done in the wake of protests in some states, since students belonging to State boards feel they were at a disadvantage because the NEET syllabus is based on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern.

Hundreds of aspiring medical practitioners and their parents/guardians are now saying that the decision to make significant changes in the syllabus is “politically motivated” and has created “panic and confusion” in their minds.

“I suspect that the government has now come up with the idea to appease some student groups and political parties in southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, which had seen strong anti-NEET protests last year,” Amit Gupta, a teacher in Kota, Rajasthan, who had last year challenged the Centre’s decision to fix an upper age limit for NEET aspirants in the Supreme Court, told this newspaper.

He added, “While curricula in some states is based on the CBSE pattern, syllabi of states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra are up to 40 per cent different and if all those different portions were taken into account for NEET papers, most students — even non-CBSE ones — will be in for a major shock.”

The CBSE is likely to organise the NEET-undergraduate exam in the first week of May and a notification is likely by January-end. Last year, about 12 lakh students had taken up the test across India.

A group of parents from Maharashtra on Friday shot off a letter to Javadekar asking him to retract his decision.
“Students have been working hard for the last two years and have been following the NCERT books as per the CBSE syllabus..any changes at this hour will lead to increased stress and chaos among students as students might be required to study new topics..we therefore pray to the government to stick to its stand of one nation, one syllabus, one examination,” a letter signed by about 100 guardians read.
Many others wrote to the HRD ministry and PM Narendra Modi on social media platforms to express their displeasure over the government’s change of stance over NEET syllabus. “Respected PMji, regarding the education minister’s announcement of replacing NEET syllabus with the State syllabi-new rules must be implemented at the beginning of the 11th std (sic). With only 3 months to go, it is too late for the students to study something new all over again,” tweeted Smita Sanghvi, parent of a NEET aspirant.

Around 160 passengers, including Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren, had a close shave when their Air India plane suffered a bird hit while landing at the airport in Guwahati.

The Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal flight was grounded on January 19 and passengers travelling to Imphal were left stranded.

“Our AI flight was hit by a flying bird and airplane landed safely in Guwahati today,” Mr. Biren tweeted on Friday.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the flight carrying 160 passengers was grounded for inspection by a team of engineers.

“The impact was so powerful that it could make a hole. It [the bird hit] occurred when the aircraft was on descend and wheels unfolded,” he said in the same tweet.

The Manipur Chief Minister, however, in another tweet pulled up Air India for the “poor and inefficient” management at the Guwahati airport.

“Air India management in Guwahati Airport is so poor and inefficient. Till now, many passengers are inside the aircraft without food and accommodation,” he tweeted.

“Only three AI staff seen there. Extra flight also not possible till tomorrow afternoon, as per AI authority,” Mr. Biren said in the tweet.

In response, the Air India spokesperson said the airlines did its best to take care of the stranded passengers.

“After the aircraft landed in Guwahati, the airport staff found it was a bird hit so the plane was grounded for further inspection. We did our utmost to take care of the stranded passengers,” the spokesperson told PTI.

He also said that the Air India has sent “men and material” from Kolkata to Guwahati to check the aircraft and they are on the job of making the aircraft air worthy.

The spokesperson further said that the Air India is operating an additional flight to fly stranded passengers which will depart for Imphal this afternoon.

Erode selected for Smart City project

Development works worth Rs. 1,500 crore to be implemented

With Erode among nine cities across the country selected for implementing Smart City proposals in the fourth phase, stakeholders, residents, industrialists and people from all walks of life perceive it as a major milestone for the overall development of the city.

Erode will see developments at an outlay of nearly Rs. 1,500 crore and the focus will be on renovation of Perumpallam Canal and retrofitting the nearby areas.

Erode, with 70.32 score, stood second next to Silvassa in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli (70.45 score) in the list that was announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Friday.

The Corporation had submitted Smart City Proposal (SCP) at a total project cost of Rs. 1,543.51 crore, of which Rs. 1,254.35 crore pertains to the area development proposal and Rs. 289.17 crore for the pan city plan. The corporation area is spread across 109.51sq.km. with population at 5.15 lakh, in 2015.

Canal

Under area development, renovation of Perumpallam Canal and retrofit of adjoining areas for 2,251 acre that covers 21% of the total population in the city is to be done at Rs. 280 crore.

Apart from this, modernisation of textile hub, bus stand, strengthening power distribution, upgrade of roads, parking facilities and other facilities would be created.

In the pan city proposal, it is planned to bring in E-Health System and CCTV surveillance in the city at about Rs. 250 crore.

Chairman of Olirum Erodu Foundation, which works for developing Erode into a world-class city, and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Erode chapter, M. Chinnasami welcomed the selection and said that it will help in transforming infrastructure and nurturing green environment in the city. “Efforts by various stakeholders paid finally,” he added.

While residents expect that improved infrastructure will make the city prosper, traders and commercial establishments expect the Smart City tag to bring in more business transactions.

“The city will transform into a textiles industrial hub,” said M. Palanisamy, a trader.

Corporation Commissioner M. Seeni Ajmal Khan told The Hindu that the proposals focus on overall development of the city and a Special Purpose Vehicle will be formed at the earliest for implementing the projects.

Funding

While 65% of the total funding will be from the Central and State governments, 28% would be through convergence of schemes, 6% through public private partnership and 1% by the local body.

Thai Pusam festival to begin on January 25

The 10-day Thai Pusam festival would commence on January 25 with the flag hoisting ceremony at Sri Periyanayaki Amman Temple, popularly known as ‘oor kovil’ in Palani, the  third abode of Arubadai Veedu.

The holy car procession would be held on January 31 and Theppam (float festival) on February 3, the 10th day of the festival.

Car procession would be held around 11 a.m. instead of 4.30 p.m. owing to lunar eclipse. Sayaratchai puja (evening puja) has also been advanced to 2.45 p.m. instead 5.30 p.m.

The temple would be closed around 3.45 p.m. Lunar eclipse would take place between 6.22 p.m. and 8.41 p.m.

LIC not to seek Aadhaar details for online access

Top official of the insurance firm says it was inadvertently done

The Life Insurance Corporation of India on Friday said they will remove the mandatory requirement of providing Aadhaar number for customers to access their policy pages, saying it was “inadvertently done”.

The move comes after The Hindu on Thursday pointed out how the insurance company was forcing people to update their Aadhaar number and PAN on their login page to access their policy pages and other details.

Replying to an email sent to the Chairman on Thursday, the Executive Director Corporate Communications, LIC, said the earlier website was available without requesting the Aadhaar number.

“Subsequent to the migration to a new portal, the LIC has planned to extend the range of facilities offered to our customers online,” the Executive Director said.

“Keeping in mind that data security and privacy are of paramount importance and also abiding by the Regulator’s directives, we have sought additional information from the customer to establish his online credentials. In the process, seeking of Aadhaar number, PAN details mandatorily was inadvertently done,” the official said.

The official added that the issue has been escalated with their technical team and “we will be removing the requirements of the mandatory providing of Aadhaar number and PAN”. However, the official has not specified a date by which this would be done.

Like a firewall

The mandatory requirements on the site acted like a firewall preventing access to a customer’s policy pages if they didn’t provide the Aadhaar number and PAN details. Legal experts feel that the move is in violation of the Supreme Court interim order extending the deadline of customers providing Aadhaar number for services to March 31. Subsequent to this interim order, the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDA) issued a circular to all insurance companies with the new deadline.

Many customers had raised objections regarding this move of LIC on Twitter. Some customers whom The Hindu spoke to had said they were forced to part with their Aadhaar number as they could not access their pages.

சென்னை போன்ற நகரங்களில் ஒரு நாள் முழுவதும் பயணிக்கும் ரூ.50 டிக்கெட் விலையை அரசு உயர்த்தியுள்ளது.

 

தமிழக அரசின் பேருந்து கட்டணம் நேற்று இரவு திடீரென உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. மாநகர பேருந்துகளில் குறைந்தபட்ச கட்டணம் ரூ.3-ல் இருந்து ரூ.5ஆகவும், அதிகபட்ச கட்டணம் ரூ.12-ல் இருந்து ரூ.19ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. விரைவு பேருந்துகளுக்கான கட்டணம் 30 கி.மீ வரை ரூ.17-ல் இருந்து ரூ.24ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.   
 

குளிர்சாதன பேருந்துகளில் ரூ.27-ல் இருந்து ரூ.42ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. வால்வோ பேருந்துகளில் ரூ.33-ல் இருந்து ரூ.51ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதீநவீன பேருந்துகளில் ரூ.21-ல் இருந்து ரூ.33ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.  
 

இந்த கட்டண நேற்று நள்ளிரவு முதல் அமலுக்கு வந்துள்ளது. போக்குவரத்து ஊழியர்கள் ஊதிய உயர்வு கோரி போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுப்பட்ட நிலையில் தற்போது தமிழக அரசு பேருந்துகளுக்கான கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தியுள்ளது.
 

மேலும், இதற்கு முன்பு சென்னை மாநகர பேருந்துகளில் ஒரு நாள் முழுவதும் பயணிக்க ரூ.50 பாஸ் வழங்கப்பட்டது. தற்போது அதன் விலை ரூ.20 உயர்த்தப்பட்டு ரூ.70 ஆக அதிகரித்துள்ளது. அதேபோல், ரூ.1000 ஆக இருந்த மாதாந்திர பாஸ் தற்போது ரூ.1400 ஆக உயர்ந்துள்ளது.
 

இது பொதுமக்களுக்கு அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

பெண்கள், தாம் பணிபுரியும் பணியிடங்களுக்குச் செல்வதில் உள்ள சிரமங்களைக் கருத்தில்கொண்டு, 2017-2018 நிதி ஆண்டிலிருந்து இருசக்கர வாகனம் வாங்க நிதிஉதவி அளிக்கும் அறிவிப்பை தமிழக அரசு வெளியிட்டிருந்தது. இந்தத் திட்டத்தின்மூலம் காஞ்சிபுரம் மாவட்டம் ஊரகப் பகுதியில் 1539 மகளிர்க்கும், நகர்புற பகுதியில் 1810 மகளிர்க்கும் என மொத்தம் 3,349 பெண்கள் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடிய இருசக்கர வாகனங்கள் வாங்க 50 சதவிகித மானியம் அல்லது 25,000 இவற்றில் எது குறைவோ, அத்தொகையை வழங்கத் திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தத் தொகை, காஞ்சிபுரம் மகளிர் திட்ட அலுவலகம்மூலம் மானியமாக வழங்கப்படும்.



மகளிர் வாழ்வாதாரத்துக்காக இந்த வாகனங்கள் வழங்கப்படுவதால், 5ஆண்டுகளுக்கு இந்த வாகனங்களை விற்கவோ, வோறொருவருக்கு மாற்றவோ முடியாது. பயனாளிகள், தங்களது சொந்த நிதி அல்லது வங்கிக்கடன், ரிசர்வ் வங்கி விதிகளின் கீழ் இயங்கும் நிதி நிறுவனங்கள் மூலமாகக் கடன்பெற்று இருசக்கர வாகனம் வாங்கலாம். கியர் இல்லாத, 125 சிசி-க்கும் மிகாமல் அந்த வாகனம் இருக்க வேண்டும். மானியம் பெறும் நபர், உரிய ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெற்றவராகவும், 1.01.2018-க்கு பிறகு வாகனம் வாங்கி உள்ளவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

ஜெயலலிதா மரணம்... அதென்ன கிளினிக்கல் டெத்... பயாலஜிக்கல் டெத்...

“டிசம்பர் நான்காம் தேதியே ஜெயலலிதா இறந்துவிட்டார்” என்று, சசிகலாவின் சகோதரர் திவாகரன் பேசியது பரபரப்பை உண்டாக்கியுள்ளது. திடீரென, தான் பேசியதை மறுத்த திவாகரன், “மருத்துவத்துறையில் கிளினிக்கல் டெத், பயாலஜிக்கல் டெத் என இரண்டு வகை உண்டு. டிசம்பர் 4 - ம் தேதி மாலை 5.15 மணிக்கு ஜெயலலிதாவுக்கு மாரடைப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. அது கிளினிக்கல் டெத். கருவிகள் உதவியோடு பயாலஜிக்கல் டெத் ஆகிவிடாமல் காப்பதற்காக மருத்துவர்கள் முயற்சி செய்தனர். அப்போலோ மருத்துவர்களிடமிருந்துதான் இதைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன். கிளினிக்கல் டெத் ஆனவர்கள் 24 மணி நேரத்தில் பயாலஜிக்கல் டெத் ஆகி விடுவார்கள். அதைத் தடுக்க முடியாது. அதனால், டிசம்பர் 5 - ம் தேதி ராஜீவ் காந்தி அரசு மருத்துவமனை நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர்கள் வந்து ஜெயலலிதாவின் மரணத்தை உறுதி செய்தார்கள்." என்று கூறியுள்ளார்.



டிசம்பர் நான்காம் தேதியே ஜெயலலிதாவுக்கு இதயத்துடிப்பு நின்று போய்விட்டது. இதயத்தின் செயல்பாடுகளை மீட்டெடுப்பதற்காக சிகிச்சைகள் (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation-CPR) மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. அதனால் எந்தப் பலனும் இல்லாமல் போகவே, எக்மோ (ECMO) கருவியுடன் ரத்த நாளங்கள் நேரடியாக இணைக்கப்பட்டன. 24 மணி நேரத்துக்கு அதிகமாக முயற்சி செய்தும் எந்தப் பலனும் இல்லாமல் போகவே டிசம்பர் ஐந்தாம் தேதி இரவு 11.30 மணிக்கு அவர் இறந்து விட்டதாக அப்போலோ மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகம் தெரிவித்திருந்தது.

அதென்ன கிளினிக்கல் டெத்..? பயாலஜிக்கல் டெத்..? பொதுநல மருத்துவர் ஒருவரிடம் பேசினோம்.

“கிளினிக்கல் டெத் என்று தனியாக ஒன்று கிடையாது. ‘கிளினிக்கல் டெத்’ என்றாலே அது மரணத்தைத்தான் குறிக்கும். அதற்குப் பிறகு எந்த முயற்சி எடுத்தும் பயனில்லை. அதன்படி பார்த்தால் ஜெயலலிதாக நான்காம் தேதியே இறந்திருக்கக் கூடும். அதன் பிறகு ஸ்பைக் ஜெனரேட்டர் போன்ற கருவிகளால் செய்த முயற்சிகள் என்பது பாதுகாப்பு கருதி, செய்தியைத் தாமதப்படுத்துவதற்காக இருந்திருக்கலாம்” என்றார்.

இறுதியாக ஜெயலலிதா மரணத்தை நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர்கள் வந்து பரிசோத்து அறிவித்ததாக திவாகரன் தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.



ஜெயலலிதா மூளைச்சாவடைந்திருந்தாரா?

இதுகுறித்து நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர் ஒருவரிடம் பேசினோம் "மூளையின் ஒட்டுமொத்த செயல்பாடுகளும் நின்று விடுவதுதான் மூளைச்சாவு. மூளைச்சாவடைந்த ஒருவர் மீண்டு வரவே முடியாது. அவரின் மரணம் உறுதி செய்யப்பட்ட ஒன்று. ஆனால், இதயத் துடிப்பு இருக்கும். உடலில் உள்ள பல உறுப்புக்களின் செயல்பாடுகள் இருக்கும்.

மூளைச்சாவடைந்த ஒருவர் உண்மையிலேயே ளைச்சாவடைந்திருக்கிறார் இனிமேல் அவரால் மீண்டு வர முடியாது என்பதையும், நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர்கள் பரிசோதித்துதான் முடிவு செய்ய வேண்டும்.

மூளைச்சாவடைந்த ஒருவருக்கு ஆப்னியா பரிசோதனை செய்யப்படும். செயற்கை சுவாசம் பொருத்தியிருக்கும்போது அவரின் ரத்தத்தில் இருக்கும் ஆக்சிஜன் மற்றும் கார்பன் டை ஆக்ஸைடுகளின் அளவுகள் கணக்கிடப்படும். பின்னர் செயற்கை சுவாசத்தை நிறுத்தி அதே சோதனைகள் செய்யப்படும். மூன்றிலிருந்து ஐந்து நிமிடங்கள் தொடர்ச்சியாக செயற்கை சுவாசக் கருவிகள் இல்லாமல் சுவாசிக்க முடிகிறதா என்று பரிசோதிக்கப்படும். அப்போது மூச்சு விட முடியவில்லை என்றால் உடனடியாக செயற்கை சுவாசம் அளிக்கப்படும்.

சுத்தமாக மூச்சு விட முடியாத நிலையில், மீண்டும் ரத்தத்தில் உள்ள கார்பன் டை ஆக்ஸைடின் அளவு பரிசோதிக்கப்படும். அப்போது பாசிட்டிவ் என்று வந்தால் மூளைச்சாவு உறுதி செய்யப்படும். ஆனால் அறிவிக்கப்படாது.

இதே சோதனை மீண்டும் ஆறுமணி நேரம் கழித்து செய்யப்படும். முதலில் பரிசோதனை செய்த மருத்துவர் குழு இல்லாமல் வேறொரு குழு பரிசோதிக்க வேண்டும். அவர்கள் ஏற்கெனவே சிகிச்சையளித்து வந்த மருத்துவர்களாகவும் இருக்கக் கூடாது. அப்போதும் பாசிட்டிவ் என்று வந்தால் மூளைச்சாவடைந்தது உறுதி செய்யப்படும்.



மூளைச்சாவடைந்த ஒருவர் மரணமடைந்து விட்டார் என்பதையும் நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர்கள்தாம் உறுதி செய்யவேண்டும். ஜெயலலிதாவை நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர்கள் பரிசோதித்து அறிவித்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் அவர் மூளைச்சாவடைந்திருக்கக் கூடும்.

மருத்துவ விதிகளில் கிளினிக்கல் டெத், பயாலஜிக்கல் டெத் என்று ஒன்றும் கிடையாது, பிரெயின் டெத், டெத் ஆகிய இரண்டுதான் இருக்கிறது." என்றார் அவர்.

தமிழக அரசு நேற்று பேருந்துக் கட்டணங்களை உயர்த்தி, உடனடியாக நள்ளிரவு முதல் அதை அமலுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தது. காலையில் பேருந்துகளில் பயணம் செய்தவர்கள் கூடுதல் கட்டண வித்தியாசத்தை அறிந்து அதிர்ந்துப்போனார்கள். மலைக்கும் மடுவுக்கும் உள்ள உயர்வாக அது மக்களுக்குத் தோன்றியதால், தமிழ்நாடு முழுக்க தங்களது எதிர்ப்பைக் காட்டி வருகிறார்கள். பேருந்து நடத்துநர்களுக்கும் மக்களுக்கும் நடக்கும் வாக்குவாதம் மாநிலத்தின் மிக முக்கிய பேருந்து நிலையங்களில் தற்போது நடந்து வருகிறது. விலை உயர்வு வரலாற்றில் முன் எப்போதும் இல்லாத வகையில், இந்தக் கட்டண உயர்வு தனியார் பேருந்துகளுக்கும் பொருந்தும் என்று கூறப்பட்டிருப்பதால், மக்களின் மனநிலை கொதிநிலையில் இருக்கிறது.

"கொஞ்சமாவது நியாயம் வேண்டாமா. இப்படி அநியாயமா ஏத்துறது எங்களோட ரத்தத்தை உறிஞ்சுற மாதிரி இருக்கு. சம்பாதிக்கிற பணத்துல பாதியைப் பஸ்காரனுக்கே கொடுத்துட்டா, நாங்க எப்படி குடும்பம், குழந்தைக்குட்டிகளைப் பார்க்கிறது. சாகடிக்கிறாங்களேங்க. பஸ் கட்டணம் ஏறிடுச்சு. சம்பளத்தை ஏற்றிக்கொடுங்கனு நாங்க வேலை செய்யிற முதலாளிகளுக்கிட்ட கேட்க முடியுமா" என்று ஆத்திரம் பொங்கும் குரலில் கொதிக்கிறார்கள் அன்றாடக் கூலித் தொழிலாளர்கள்.

"அரசு பஸ் கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தியதோடு தனியாருக்கும் இந்தக் கட்டண உயர்வை தாரை வார்த்திருக்கறாங்களே ஏன். இது மக்களுக்கான அரசாங்கமா, தனியார் முதலாளிகளுக்கான அரசாங்கமா. போக்குவரத்துத் தொழிலாளர்களுக்கு சம்பள உயர்வைக் கூட்டிக் கொடுக்கணும்னா அரசாங்கமே செய்யணும். மக்களுடைய பாக்கெட்டிலிருந்து பிடுங்கித் தரக்கூடாது" என்று அன்றாடம் அலுவலகத்துக்குச் சென்று வருகிறவர்கள் புலம்புகிறார்கள். "மின்வாரியம், போக்குவரத்து, பால்உற்பத்தி இந்தத் துறைகள் லாபத்தில் இயங்குவதாக தமிழ்நாட்டை ஆண்ட எந்த அரசும் இதுவரை சொன்னதே இல்லை. கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தணும்னு முடிவு பண்ணும்போதெல்லாம், 'நஷ்டத்தில் இயங்குகிறது' என்று ஆட்சியாளர்கள் சொல்வதே வழக்கமாக இருக்கிறது. அடுத்து வர்ற 23-ம் தேதி மின்வாரிய ஊழியர்கள் ஒருநாள் வேலை நிறுத்தம் செய்யப்போகிறார்கள். அவர்களும் ஊதிய உயர்வைத்தான் முன் நிறுத்துகிறார்கள். என்ன நடக்கும். பேருந்துக் கட்டண உயர்வைத் தொடர்ந்து அடுத்ததாக, மின்கட்டண உயர்வு இருக்கும். 'மின்வாரியம் நஷ்டத்தில் இயங்குவதால், இந்த விலை உயர்வை மக்கள் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். மற்ற மாநிலங்களை ஒப்பிடும்போது, தமிழ்நாட்டில் மின்கட்டணம் {குறைவுதான்'னு சொல்லுவாங்க" என்ற மக்களின் கொதிப்பையும் பல்வேறு இடங்களில் பார்க்க முடிந்தது.
  இந்நிலையில், மக்களின் எதிர்ப்பைக் காரணம் காட்டி, இன்னும் இரண்டு தினங்களில் உயர்த்தப்பட்ட கட்டணத்திலிருந்து ஓரளவு குறைத்து தமிழக அரசு அறிவிப்பு வெளியிட இருப்பதாகவும் தகவல் வெளியாகியுள்ளது.

கட்ட வண்டி... கட்ட வண்டி... காப்பாத்தும் நல்ல வண்டி!

''பாரப்பா பழனியப்பா... பட்டணமாம் பட்டணமாம்
ஊரப்பா பெரியதப்பா.... உள்ளம்தான் சிறியதப்பா..."

இப்படி கேலி செய்தவாறு, மாநகரச் சாலைகளில் தடக்... தடக்... சத்தத்துடனும், ஜல்... ஜல்... சலங்கை ஒலியுடனும், ஒருகாலத்தில் கலக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது நம் நாட்டின் பாரம்பரியப் போக்குவரத்து வாகனமான மாட்டு வண்டி (கட்டை வண்டி). இன்றோ... நகர சாலைகளில் இதை ஓட்டிச் சென்றால், மக்கள் கேலியாகத்தான் பார்க்கிறார்கள். பேருந்துகளை டிரைவர்கள் மெதுவாக ஓட்டினாலே, ‘என்ன கட்டவண்டியா ஓட்டுறே?’ என்று சிடுசிடுக்கும் மக்களுக்கு நடுவில், நிஜ கட்ட வண்டிகள் வந்தால்... அவ்வளவுதான். வண்டியோட்டியை வறுத்தே தின்றுவிடுவார்கள்.



ஆனால், மனிதனின் முதல் வாகனமே... இந்தக் கட்ட வண்டிதான்! கால ஓட்டத்தில் எவ்வளவோ விஷயங்கள் மாறினாலும் இதன் ஆரம்ப வடிவம் மட்டும் இன்று வரை மாறவில்லை. முதன்முதலில் விவசாயப் பணிகளுக்காகத்தான் இந்த மாட்டு வண்டிகள் புழக்கத்துக்கு வந்தன. ஏக்கர் கணக்கில் நிலம் வைத்திருப்பவர்களும் சரி, நிலம் இல்லாதவர்களும் சரி, மாட்டுவண்டி வைத்திருப்பதை கௌரவமாக நினைத்த காலம் உண்டு.

சொல்லப்போனால், இன்று வீட்டுக்கு வீடு கார் நிற்பதை கௌரவமாக நினைக்கிறார்கள் அல்லவா! சுமார் 40 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வரை... மாட்டு வண்டி வைத்திருப்பதுதான் கௌரவமாக இருந்தது. அதிலும் கூண்டு வண்டி என்று சொல்லப்படும் வண்டிகளை வைத்திருப்பவர்கள்... இன்றைக்கு கார் வைத்திருப்பதற்கு சமமாக மதிக்கப்பட்டனர்.

குடும்பத்தோடு கோயில்களுக்குச் செல்வதும், விசேஷங்களுக்கு செல்வதும் இதுபோன்ற மாட்டு வண்டியில்தான். கூண்டு வண்டி இல்லாதவர்கள், வண்டியின் மீது பச்சை தென்னை ஓலையை கூண்டு போல கட்டி, அடியில் வைக்கோலை பரப்பி, அதன்மீதும் தென்னை ஓலையைப் பரப்பிவிடுவார்கள். முதலில் பெண்கள், குழந்தைகளை ஏற்றி அமர வைத்துவிட்டு, ஆண்கள் முன்புறமாக நின்றுகொண்டு போவார்கள். இந்தப் பயணத்தின் சுகமே அலாதிதான். இன்று டெல்லிக்கும், சென்னைக்கும் ஃப்ளைட்டில் போய் வந்தாலும் கிடைக்காத சுகம்.



விவசாயிகளுக்கும், விவசாயக் கூலித் தொழிலாளர்களுக்கும் அவர்களின் சொந்த வேலைகளுக்குக் கைகொடுப்பதோடு, வருமானத்தையும் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தன இந்தக் கட்டை வண்டிகள். இன்றைக்கு இருக்கும் அத்தனைச் சாலைகளும், அன்று மாட்டுவண்டிகள் போட்டுக் கொடுத்தவைதான். அந்த மண் சாலையின் மீதுதான் ஜல்லிக் கற்களைக் கொட்டி, தாரை ஊற்றி பளபள சாலையாக மாற்றி, கார்களிலும் பைக்குகளிலும் பறக்கிறோம். ஒவ்வொரு பகுதிக்குமே, அந்தப் பகுதியின் பாரம்பரியத்துக்கேற்ற பிரத்யேக வண்டி, வாகனங்கள உண்டு. தமிழ்நாட்டில் மாடுகள், குதிரைகள் என்றால், ராஜஸ்தான் பகுதியில் ஒட்டகங்கள், பனிப் பிரதேசங்களில் கரடிகள் என்று பழக்கப்படுத்தி வண்டிகளில் பயன்படுத்துவார்கள். தமிழகத்தில் மரத்தால் செய்யப்பட்ட கட்டை வண்டிகளையே பயன்படுத்தி வந்தனர். 70, 80 ஆம் ஆண்டுகளில் டயர்களுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்ட இரும்பு வண்டிகள் புழக்கத்துக்கு வந்தன.

அரசு இந்த வண்டிகளை இலவசமாக கொடுக்கவே கட்டை வண்டிகளின் அடையாளம் மாறத் தொடங்கியது. இருப்பினும் சென்னையின் பாரீஸ் மற்றும் பிற மாவட்டங்களின் காய்கறி சந்தைகளில் இன்றைக்கும் பழமை மாறாத கட்டை வண்டிகள் வலம் வருவது ஆச்சர்யமே! இந்த வண்டிகள், இன்றைக்கும் பல குடும்பங்களுக்கு சோறு போட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன!


காஞ்சிபுரம் மாவட்டம், உத்திரமேரூர் அருகேயுள்ள சோமநாதபுரம் கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ரமேஷ், இதைப் பற்றி பெருமையோடு பேசினார்.

"பதினோரு வயசிலிருந்தே வண்டி ஓட்டிட்டு வர்றேன். ஆரம்பத்துல கட்ட வண்டியை ஓட்டிட்டு இருந்தேன். அப்புறம் டயர் வண்டி கைக்கு வந்துச்சு. எருவு ஓட்டுறது, அறுவடை செய்ற நெல் மூட்டைகளை கொண்டு வர்றதுனு பல வேலைகள் கிடைக்கும். வண்டி வேலைகள் கிடைக்காத சமயங்கள்ல ஏர் ஓட்டுறது, மஞ்சு ஓட்டுறதுனு மத்த வேலைகளயும் செய்வேன். இந்த வண்டிக்கு பெட்ரோல், டீசல், கேஸ், இன்ஜின் எல்லாம் இந்த செவுலும், பிள்ளையும்தான் (இவரிடம் இருக்கும் மாடுகளின் செல்லப்பெயர்தான் இவை). நுகத்தடியைக் கழுத்து மேல வெச்சுட்டா... சும்மா, ஜனங்... ஜனங்னு கிளம்பிடும். பம்பரமா வேலை செய்யும்.

தினமும் பச்சைப் புல்லை போட்டுடணும். தவிடு தண்ணிய காட்டிடணும். மத்தபடி எவ்ளோ வேலைனாலும் வாங்கிக்கிலாம். என் மாடுங்க ரெண்டும் தங்கமான மாடுங்க. திருவண்ணாமலை பக்கத்துல இருக்கிற செங்கத்திலிருந்து ஜோடி 87 ஆயிரம் ரூபாய்னு வாங்கிட்டு வந்தேன். ஒரு நாளைக்கு 1,500 ரூபாய் வரை சம்பாதிச்சு கொடுக்குதுங்க. ஒரு குடும்பத்துக்கு தேவையான வருமானத்தை இந்த மாடுங்க சம்பாதிச்சு கொடுக்குதுங்க" என்று சொல்லி பெருமிதப் பார்வையை வீசின ரமேஷ்,"ஊருக்கு ஊரு டிராக்டர் வந்துட்டாலும், இன்னும் சில வேலைகளுக்கு மாட்டுவண்டிங்கதான் கைகொடுக்குதுங்க. முன்ன ஊருக்கு 10, 20 வண்டிகள் நின்னுச்சு. இப்ப ஒண்ணு ரெண்டு வண்டிகள் ஓடிட்டு இருக்கு" என்றபடியே டுர் டுர்... எனச் சொல்லி தன் மாடுகளை விரட்ட, வண்டி வேகமெடுத்தது!

இருமனம் இணையும் திருமணங்கள் சமீப நாள்களாகப் பெரும் பொருள்செலவில் ஆடம்பரமாக நடத்தப்படுகின்றன. நாகரிகம் மெதுவாக நடைபயின்றுக்கொண்டிருந்த காலத்தில், காலையில் வயலுக்குப் போய்விட்டு, மாலை வீடு திரும்பிய பிறகு உற்றார், உறவினர்கள் கூடி நின்று வாழ்த்த இரவில்தான் திருமணங்கள் நடந்திருக்கின்றன. ஆனால், நாகரிகம் நான்கு கால் பாய்ச்சலில் அசுர வேகத்தில் ஓடத் தொடங்கிய பிறகு, காலை வேளையில் திருமணங்களை நடத்தி வருகிறோம். திருமணங்களில் வகைவகையான சாப்பாடு, மேள தாளம் என எந்தளவுக்கு ஆடம்பரம் அதிகமாக இருக்கிறதோ அதுதான் சிறந்த திருமணம் என்ற சிந்தனை சமூகத்தில் பரவிக்கிடக்கிறது. ஆனால், உண்மையில் திருமணங்களுக்கு ஆடம்பரம் தேவையில்லை. அன்பு நிறைந்த வாழ்த்துகள் மட்டுமே மணமக்களைச் சிறப்பாக வாழவைக்கும். இது தொடர்பாக நாம் பேசினாலும், நம்ம வீட்டு கல்யாணம் என்று வரும்போது, நாமும் தேசிய நீரோடையில் கலந்து விடுகிறோம். ஆனால், சிங்கப்பூரில் வசிக்கும் சங்கர் கணேஷ், தனது திருமணத்தைத் தமிழ் முறைப்படி நடத்தியதும், அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட மாட்டுவண்டியில் மாப்பிள்ளை ஊர்வலம் வந்து அசத்தியிருக்கிறார்.

திண்டுக்கல் மாவட்டம், வத்தலக்குண்டு அருகேயுள்ள பழைய வத்தலக்குண்டு பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர் பொன்னையா. இவரின் மகன் சங்கர் கணேஷ், சிங்கப்பூரில் ஒரு தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் மென்பொறியாளராகப் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார். இதற்கு முன்பாக மாலத்தீவில் ஆசிரியராக வேலைபார்த்த அனுபவமும் உண்டு. இவருக்கு தமிழ் பண்பாடு மீதும் கலாசாரம் மீதும் அதிக பற்று உண்டு. இந்நிலையில் இவரின் உறவுக்கார பெண், கலைச்செல்விக்கும் இவருக்கும் திருமணம் நிச்சயமானது. தனது திருமணத்தில் வீண் ஆடம்பரங்களை தவிர்க்க நினைத்த சங்கர் கணேஷ், மணப்பெண்ணிடமும் உறவினர்களிடம் எடுத்துச்சொல்லி சம்மதம் வாங்கிக்கொண்டார். இந்நிலையில் நேற்று காலை வத்தலக்குண்டு பெருமாள் கோயிலில் இவர்களின் திருமணம் நடந்தது. வரவேற்பு வத்தலக்குண்டில் உள்ள ஒரு தனியார் திருமண மண்டபத்தில் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. கோயிலில் திருமணம் முடிந்ததும், தன் துணைவியைத் தூக்கி, அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட மாட்டு வண்டியில் அமர வைத்தவர், தானும் மாட்டு வண்டியில் ஏறி அமர்ந்தார். உடன் மாப்பிள்ளை, பெண் தோழர்களும் அமர்ந்துகொண்டனர். கலர் கலர் காகிதங்கள் சுற்றி அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட மாட்டு வண்டியில் மாப்பிள்ளை ஊர்வலம் தொடங்கியது. மாட்டு வண்டியில் புதுமண ஜோடிகள் வருவதை அறிந்து பொதுமக்கள் ஆங்காங்கே கூடி நின்று ஆச்சர்யமாகப் பார்த்தனர்.

மாட்டு வண்டியில் ஊர்வலமாக வந்த புதுமணத் தம்பதியினர் மண்டபத்தில் வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சியில் பங்கேற்றனர். வாழ்த்து சொன்ன நண்பர்கள், உறவினர்களுக்கு மணமகன் மரக்கன்றுகளைப் பரிசாக அளித்தார். மேடையில் திருவள்ளுவர், அம்பேத்கர், பாரதியார் படங்கள் இடம் பெற்றிருந்தன. இது வத்தலக்குண்டு பகுதியில் ஆச்சர்யத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. மாட்டுவண்டி ஊர்வலம் பற்றி புதுமாப்பிள்ளை சங்கர் கணேஷிடம் கேட்டபோது, ‘‘எனக்கு தமிழ் கலாசாரம் மீது தீராத காதல் உண்டு. திருமணம் என்ற பெயரில் ஆடம்பரத்தைத் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். அதை அடுத்தவருக்கு சொல்வதற்கு முன்பாக எனது திருமணத்தை அப்படி நடத்த வேண்டும் என முடிவு செய்தேன். கிராமத்து முறைப்படி மாட்டு வண்டியில் ஊர்வலமாக வந்ததால், மனதுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருக்கிறது. இதை முன்னுதாரணமாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, இனி நடக்கும் திருமணங்கள் நமது தமிழ் முறைப்படி, ஆடம்பரம் இல்லாமல் நடக்க வேண்டும் என்பதுதான் இதன் மூலம் நான் சொல்ல வந்த செய்தி’’ என்றார். ஆடம்பரமாக நடக்கும் திருமணங்களைவிட, அலங்காரமாக நடந்த இந்தத் திருமணம் அனைவரையும் கவர்ந்தது.

இறந்த பெண்ணுக்குத் திடீர் பிரசவம்! - அடக்கம் செய்ய வந்தவர்களை அதிரவைத்த சம்பவம்

தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் தயிஸி என்னும் கிராமத்தில், பிணவறையில் சடலமாக வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த பெண், குழந்தையை பிரசவித்த சோக சம்பவம் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளது.



இதுகுறித்து ஆப்பிரிக்க ஊடகம் 'Dispatch live' வெளியிட்ட செய்தியில், `தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் தாம்போ மாவட்டத்தில் தயிஸி என்னும் குக்கிராமம் உள்ளது. அந்தக் கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த 9 மாத கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண் `டோயி’ கடந்த சில நாள்கள் முன்னர் திடீரென இறந்துபோனார். 33 வயது நிரம்பிய டோயிக்கு ஏற்கெனவே ஐந்து குழந்தைகள் உள்ளன. 10 நாள்களுக்கு முன்னர் திடீரென மூச்சுத்திணறல் ஏற்பட்டு டோயி வீட்டிலேயே இறந்துபோனார். நிறைமாத கர்ப்பிணி திடீரென இறந்துபோனது அந்தக் கிராமத்து மக்களைப் பெரும் சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்தியது. இறுதிச் சடங்குக்குப் பிறகு, சடலங்களைத் அடக்கம் செய்வோரிடம் (Funeral services) டோயியின் உடல் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டது.

அப்போது டோயியின் சடலம் பிணவறையில் வைக்கப்பட்டது. அனைத்துச் சடங்குகளும் முடிந்த பின்னர், டோயியின் சடலத்தைப் புதைப்பதற்காகப் பிணவறை ஊழியர்கள் வெளியே எடுத்தனர். டோயியின் கால்களுக்கு இடையே பச்சிளம் குழந்தை இறந்தநிலையில் கிடந்தது. இந்தக் காட்சியைப் பார்த்த பிணவறை ஊழியர்கள் அதிர்ந்துபோனார்கள். இறந்த பெண் எப்படி பிரசவித்திருக்க முடியும் என்று குழப்பத்தில் ஆழ்ந்தார்கள். குழந்தை ஆணா பெண்ணா என்பதைக்கூட அவர்கள் கவனிக்கவில்லை. டோயியின் கிராமத்துக்குத் தகவல் அளிக்கப்பட்டது. டோயியின் தாய், “இது தீய சக்தியின் வேலைதான். என் மகள் நிறைமாத கர்ப்பிணி. திடீரென இறந்துபோனாள். அதற்கும் தீய சக்திதான் காரணம். இரண்டு சடலத்தையும் எரித்துவிடுங்கள்” என்று கதறினார். இத்தகவல் கிராமம் முழுவதும் பரவியது. சடலம் எப்படி பிரசவிக்கும். இது கண்டிப்பாக அமானுஷ்யத்தின் வேலைதான்” என்று கிராம மக்களும் நம்பினார்கள்.

It’s quite normal for people to have a craving for specific foods and different people across the world have different preferences. But stories about bizarre and much more severe fixations have been reported in the past few years that can come across as shocking.

In a similar shocking account, a man from Jharkhand is claiming that he needs to feed on mud for survival. The 100-year-old man started eating mud as a child and it soon developed into a daily activity for him.

Karu Paswan said that it was poverty that drove him to start consuming mud when he was 11-years-old. His family members did try to stop him, but Karu didn’t listen to anyone as eating mud became an addiction.

But no matter how revolting and weird his food habits may seem, Karu is still healthy at the age of 100. His habit may be a result of pica syndrome which causes people to gorge on different inedible things like hair and chalk.

In a shocking case, a stillborn baby emerged from its mother 10 days after she had died, plunging the family into fresh grief.

The woman, 33-year-old Nomveliso Nomasonto Mdoyi had suddenly complained of breathlessness at her home in the village of Mthayisi in South Africa’s southern Eastern Cape province.

The mum-of-five died shortly afterwards and her body was given to a firm of funeral directors ahead of her burial.

However, 10 days after she had passed away, staff noticed that a dead baby had appeared between the legs of her lifeless body.

Experts say that the relaxation of muscles after death or even a build-up of bacteria could cause an unborn baby to be expelled experts.

The boss of the funeral directors for Lindokuhle Funerla Fundile Makalana said that when they took the body from the mortuary tray to her coffin, they discovered that there was a newly born baby between her legs.

'The baby was dead. We were so shocked and frightened that we did not even have time to look at the sex of the baby.

He went on to add that even though they have been in business for 20 years, they have never heard of a dead woman give birth.

The shocking incident left her mother Mandzala Mdoyi, 76, even more grief-stricken.

The family reportedly ignored some suggestions of witchcraft and held a funeral and cremation as planned, with the baby in the coffin with its mother.

It is not clear whether the baby's life could have been saved had doctors provided different treatment when the mother fell ill.

From today, travelling by train will be cheaper than buses

CHENNAI: From today, travel by train will be cheaper than that in buses. The State government on Friday announced hike in bus fares in eight public transport corporations it operates. The government’s release announcing the fare hike highlighted how in Tamil Nadu the bus fares are still comparatively cheaper than the neighbouring States and also how the low fares are making the transport corporations unsustainable and forced them into huge debts.

But the revised ticket fare, which comes into effect from Saturday, will burn a hole in the pockets of commuters. Long-distance passengers have to shell out about Rs 100 to Rs 200 more when travelling distances above 200 km in TNSTC and SETC buses.

For ordinary class mofussil buses, the fares are hiked from 42 paise per kilometre to 60 paise. For ‘Express’ and ‘Deluxe’ buses, the fares have been hiked from 56 paise per kilometre to 80 paise. The fares for ‘Super Deluxe’ buses is now 90 paise from 60 paise per km. For ‘Ultra Deluxe’ buses, the new fare is 110 paise, which is nearly a 50 per cent hike from 70 paise hitherto.

This means, ticket fare of a semi-sleeper bus operated by State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) from Chennai to Madurai will increase from Rs 275 to Rs 415 in Super deluxe buses. It will cost a passenger Rs 505 in Ultra Deluxe buses against Rs 325, the earlier fare. However, the fare in a second class sleeper in train will be just Rs 315, including reservation charges.

Similarly, a bus ticket in SETC from Chennai to Tirunelveli would cost Rs 590 and Rs 720 in ‘Deluxe’ and ‘Ultra Deluxe’ buses. So far, the fares were only Rs 330 and Rs 380. A train ticket in second class sleeper for the same distance is only Rs 385.

The ticket fares in relatively short distance routes, lesser than 300 km, such as Chennai - Vellore, Chennai - Tiruvannamalai, Chennai - Villupuram and Chennai - Puducherry will go up by Rs 50 to Rs 65 in both TNSTC and SETC buses.

For instance, the fare in an ‘Ultra Deluxe’ bus from Chennai to Vellore would go up to Rs 160. Till Friday, it was only Rs 98. Even in a TNSTC bus, a ticket would cost Rs 118 (old fare was Rs 80). But a reserved seat in a superfast train in second class is only Rs 90 between Chennai and Katpadi, near Vellore.

The ticket fares of Air Conditioned Deluxe buses and Volvo buses have been increased by 50 to 60 paise per km. The AC bus fares are to be charged 140 paise a kilometre, compared to 90 paise hitherto, while Volvo bus tickets is to be fixed at 170 paise as against the earlier fare of 110 paise a km.

The government also increased the minimum ticket fares of all buses. The minimum ticket fare in Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses has been increased to Rs 5 from Rs 3 for ordinary buses and the maximum fare increased to Rs 23.

The starting fare in an ordinary town bus has been increased to Rs 6 from Rs 5, while for ‘Express’ buses the minimum fare (upto 30 km) is to be Rs 24 as against the earlier fare of Rs 17. Similarly, the lowest fare in non-stop deluxe buses has been hiked to Rs 27 from Rs 18, while the minimum fare of ultra deluxe buses will be Rs 33, as against Rs 21 in the past.

The minimum fares of AC and Volvo buses have also been increased to Rs 42 and Rs 51 respectively, from Rs 27 and Rs 33 till Friday. In addition to this, passengers will be charged between Rs 1 and Rs 10 towards tollgate fee. For the bus fares from Rs 25 to Rs 501 passengers should pay anywhere between Rs 1 and Rs 10 towards toll fee.

In the event of loss of life and injuries due to accidents, passengers in the age group of one to 15, will have an insurance coverage up to Rs 2.5 lakhs, those in the age group of 16 to 60, will get a coverage up to Rs 5 lakhs. Passengers above 60 years, will be covered up to Rs 2.5 lakhs. The last time the ticket fare was hiked was in November 2011. An official release said.

வாங்கிய நூல்கள் குறித்து அவரிடம் கேட்டபோது, “எனது சொந்த ஊர் திருநெல்வேலி. சென்னையில் தங்கி ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். தேர்வுக்காகத் தயாராகிவருகிறேன். ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். தேர்வுக்குள் நுழைந்த பிறகுதான் புத்தகக் கண்காட்சிக்கே வரத் தொடங்கினேன். போன வருடம்தான் முதன்முறையாக வந்தேன். ஐ.ஏ.எஸ். தேர்வு தொடர்பான புத்தகங்களையும் பாடங்களுடன் தொடர்புடைய புத்தகங்களையும் தான் பொதுவாக வாங்குவேன். விரும்பிய, தேடிய புத்தகங்கள் எல்லாம் ஒரே இடத்தில் கிடைப்பதை நினைத்தால் அவ்வளவு மகிழ்ச்சியாக உள்ளது” என்று பூரித்துப்போனார் அவர்.

இன்று பல ஊர்களிலும் புத்தகக் காட்சி நடைபெறுகிறது. ஆனால், சென்னையில் நடைபெறும் புத்தகக் காட்சி தனித்தன்மை வாய்ந்தது. சென்னைப் புத்தகக் காட்சிக்காக வெளியூர்களிலிருந்து வருவோரும் உண்டு.

அப்படி ஊட்டியிலிருந்து வந்திருந்த செலீனா கூறும்போது, “செய்தித் தொலைக்காட்சி ஒன்றில் வேலை பார்க்கிறேன். மூன்றாவது ஆண்டாக சென்னைப் புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன். எனக்கு இலக்கிய நூல்கள் வாசிப்பில் ஆர்வம் அதிகம். சமீப காலமாக அரசியல், கவிதை நூல்கள் வாசிப்பதிலும் ஆர்வம் கூடியிருக்கிறது. இந்தப் புத்தகக் கண்காட்சியில் நரன் எழுதிய ‘கேசம்’ என்ற நூலை வாங்கினேன்” என்கிறார் செலீனா.

பட்டிமன்றத்துக்குத் தயாராக..

புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு முதன்முறையாக வந்திருந்த, சென்னை லயோலா கல்லூரி மாணவர் அருண் என்பவரைப் புத்தகக் காட்சியில் சந்திக்க நேர்ந்தது. இதுவரை வராமல் இந்த ஆண்டு மட்டும் புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு வந்த ரகசியம் என்ன என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டோம்.


“ நான் இப்போது பட்டிமன்றங்களில் சென்று பேசி வருகிறேன். தெரிந்த விஷயங்களை சில பட்டிமன்றங்களில் பேசி கைத்தட்டல் வாங்கிவிடலாம். தொடர்ந்து அதையே பேசினால் அரைத்த மாவாகிவிடும். புதிய விஷயங்களைப் பகிர வேண்டும் என்றால், நூல்கள் அதிகம் படித்தால்தான் முடியும்.

அந்த வகையில்தான் முதன்முறையாக இங்கே வந்தேன். பாவலரேறு பெருஞ்சித்திரனார் எழுதிய ‘பெரியார்’ நூலை வாங்கினேன். இனி தொடர்ந்து புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு வந்து புத்தகங்களை வாங்கவும் வாசிக்கவும் உத்தேசித்துள்ளேன்’ என்கிறார் அருண்.

சும்மா ரவுண்டு

இப்படிப் புத்தகம் வாங்கும் நோக்கத்துடன் வரும் இளையோர் மத்தியில், நண்பர்களுடன் பொழுதுபோக்குவதற்காகப் புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு வந்திருந்தவர்களையும் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. அப்படி ஃபிரெண்ட்ஸ்களுடன் வந்திருந்த சென்னை எம்.ஓ.பி. வைணவா கல்லூரி மாணவி ரம்யா என்ன சொல்கிறார்? “இதற்கு முன்பு இரண்டு புத்தகங்களை வாங்கினேன்.

அந்தப் புத்தகங்களையே இன்னும் படித்து முடிக்கவில்லை. இருந்தாலும் புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு வந்து செல்வது எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். இங்கே வந்தால் நன்றாகப் பொழுதுபோகும். மற்றப்படி பிரம்மாண்டமான அரங்கம், ஏராளமான நூல்கள் என ஒவ்வொன்றையும் பார்க்கவே மலைப்பாக இருக்கிறது” என்கிறார் ரம்யா.

ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக இளைஞர்களின் ரசனைக்கு விருந்தாக இருக்கிறது சென்னைப் புத்தகக் காட்சி.
