Thousands of students allegedly paid bribes to boost scores

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Wednesday exposed a major scam in the award of marks during revaluation of answer scripts in Anna University.

Ten academicians, including the former Controller of Examinations Prof. G.V. Uma, were named accused in the scandal involving a large number of students who allegedly paid bribes to boost their scores during revaluation of answer scripts.

The agency conducted a surprise check on the premises of the suspects and seized incriminating documents, including copies of answer scripts and property documents.

This is the second time a scandal of this nature has occurred in the reputable university. In June 2012, two faculty members had given in writing that they were pressured by some top university officials to award higher marks to certain students during revaluation. However, the accused in that case, who were initially suspended from service, had subsequently gone scot-free due to lack of conclusive evidence. In the latest instance, the First Information Report said in April/May 2017, Dr. Uma, presently Professor, Department of Information Science and Technology, Anna University, conspired with Dr. P. Vijayakumar, Assistant Professor/Dean (in-charge), University College of Engineering, Tindivanam, and Dr. R. Sivakumar, Assistant Professor, University College of Engineering, Tindivanam, and demanded Rs. 10,000 from each student to boost marks during the revaluation process.

The suspects allegedly forged answer scripts by altering the marks to benefit the students who paid bribes. The accused persons “destroyed a maximum number of the answer scripts of the students for whom they awarded enhanced marks/pass marks in the revaluation done during August 2017 at Tindivanam and thereby caused disappearance of evidence relating to the criminal offence committed by them.”

OnePlus founder & CEO Pete Lau said his brand’s outstanding performance in India went way beyond his initial expectations, and attributed it primarily to two elements – the company’s total focus on a single flagship product, and its culture of listening closely to the voices of its user community to understand their expectations.


On Tuesday, global research firm Counterpoint said OnePlus had surpassed Samsung to lead the premium smartphone segment (over Rs 30,000) for the first time ever in the second quarter of 2018. It estimated OnePlus’ share at 40%, and Samsung’s at 34%. Apple was third, but way behind at 14%.

Counterpoint noted that with every flagship OnePlus launch, its user base had been growing in India and this was now translating to record sales for every new flagship. The last quarter had seen the launch of the OnePlus 6, which saw kilometre long queues in front of some of its stores in India.

In an exclusive interaction with TOI in Bengaluru, Lau said, “This is definitely a milestone. It’s also a natural result of our persistence in doing what we believe is right, our focus on making the best possible products.”

India, he said, would now be his biggest market, slightly above even home market China. India accounts for about a third of the company’s revenue – the global revenue was $1.4 billion in 2017.

Lau said his biggest base of users, about 30%, is in the age bracket of 18 to 24. “We realise that India as a country is more close to western culture than we thought. And there is a high level of awareness,” he said. Lau had started working in China’s Oppo Electronics as a hardware engineer. He rose to be vice president in the mobile company. In 2013, he started OnePlus. The brand was launched in India the following year.

Lau understands English, but finds it difficult to speak the language. “I spent a lot of time focusing on the language in university, spent time memorising words, but I was never able to improve my speaking. If I’m sent to the US for a year without a team to support me, I’ll learn,” he said with a laugh. The interview was done with the help of a translator.

Lau is obsessed with design, probably a big factor in OnePlus’ attractiveness. “I can talk about design all night, it’s in my heart, as a product manager. I will spend months working on 0.01mm differences in the back curve or in the bottom slope of the device. We are focused on creating a design that does not become uninteresting within weeks or months,” he says.

Lau said OnePlus does not add elements or functions for the sake of adding them.

“It’s our core product philosophy – create a user experience that’s the best, have a device that does all of what is expected of it in a manner that is as fast and smooth as possible, and doesn’t bind the user to deal with things beyond that, like unnecessary notifications, adware, bloatware,” he said.

Snake catching to fetch Irulas more income

Irula tribals involved in snake catching as well as venom extraction will soon get additional income under the ‘Access and Benefit Sharing’ rules under the Biological Diversity Act of 2002. A preliminary meeting in this regard was organised by the State Biodiversity Board at Panagal buildings in Saidapet on Wednesday.

National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) secretary T Rabi Kumar said under the Biological Diversity Act of 2002 guidelines on Access and Benefit Sharing Regulations 2014 it is stipulated that: ‘Any person referred in the Act, who intends to have access to biological resources and or associated traditional knowledge for research or bio-survey and bio-utilisation for research shall apply to the NBA for obtaining access to such biological resource and or associated knowledge occurring in India.’ Already the NBA had helped several communities to get a real value for their traditional knowledge and also for gathering resources from the forests. Rabi Kumar said Irula tribals are having both the traditional knowledge to catch the snakes and extract venom from it. The resource they collect is used for making anti-venom serum, which is meant for the society. So on both counts the Irula tribals are eligible for getting additional income. This is the first ever meeting for implementing access and benefit sharing system for them, he said.

The cash-for-marks scam unearthed by DVAC may well hold answers to the abysmal standards of engineering graduates who pass out of Anna University every year, as much as it raises questions on the credibility of the biggest technical university in Asia with 530 affiliated colleges.

The involvement of controller of examinations GV Uma has shocked many. Former Anna University vice-chancellor M Anandakrishnan told TOI that the scam was unheard of anywhere in the country. Vigilance officers who unearthed large-scale malpractice in the re-evaluation of papers of April-May 2017 exams, too are surprised how well-oiled the rigging machinery ran.

Sources said a closed group of professors controlled the re-evaluation mafia. Once a student fails in the examination and applies for re-evaluation, agents swing into action and convey to the students that the “problem can be fixed,” as a source put it. Around 12 lakh students write semester exams every year; in the April/May 2017, 3.02 lakh applied for re-evaluation, of whom 90,000 got higher marks.

“If half of the students had paid ₹10,000 for higher marks, this means ₹40 crore for just one semester exam. The controller of exams post is for three years, during which at least six exams are conducted,” said a source. This was also during the period when the university was without a VC. Before M K Surappa was appointed in April 2018, the university was headless for two years. Surappa’s predecessor M Rajaram is facing a DVAC case for taking bribes for appointment of professors.

Here’s how the re-evaluation process should ideally take place in the university. A student who wants to apply for re-evaluation has to pay ₹700, of which ₹300 is for the photocopy of the answer script. After a subject expert confirms that there can be a change of mark in the script, the controller of examination comes into the picture. The controller decides the re-evaluation centre and appoints officers who are in charge of ensuring accuracy and quality of valuation.

Last year, however, protocols were violated and the controller of examinations colluded with re-evaluating professors to forge answer sheets and illegally award higher marks to students who had paid bribe. The scam now unearthed pertains to a central re-evaluation process at Tindivanam, which was selected as the valuation centre for the zone. There are 23 zones, each with a zonal coordinator. Apart from Uma, the other main accused are P Vijaykumar, assistant professor and dean at the University College of Engineering, Tindivanam and R Sivakumar, assistant professor maths at the same college. The other accused are examiners R Sundarajan, M Mahesh Babu, N Anbuselvan, C N Pratheeba, I Pragatheeswar, M Rameshkannan and S Ramesh.

Incidentally, it was after the evaluation of the April/May 2017 examinations in November last year, that Anna University debarred more than 1,100 faculty members from valuation. This was after variations of up to 40 marks were found in more than 50,000 of the 2.5 lakh answer scripts. For variations up to 20, 30 and 40 marks, the professors were barred for one, two and three years respectively.

DVAC officials are considering the possibility of some of these professors being penalised for not toeing the line of the scamsters. “In that case, we may get some new tips from the debarred professors,” said an official. Denying all allegations, Uma told TOI that she had streamlined all procedures during her term and was transparent in her activities. DVAC sources said they would conduct a detailed investigation and file more FIRs if needed.

Tamil Nadu Issues Notification Fixing Minimum Wage For ‘Unskilled’ Domestic Workers

Paying your domestic help even a rupee less than ₹37 per hour for doing daily chores like sweeping, washing utensils and mopping can land you behind bars.

Enforcing labour reforms in the unorganized sector, the Tamil Nadu government in a recent notification has fixed ₹37 per hour as the minimum hourly wage of ‘unskilled’ domestic workers, while the remuneration for skilled workers like home nurses and semiskilled helps like cooks and gardeners have been set at ₹39 and ₹38 per hour respectively.

The rate for an entire day’s chores (eight hours), including washing clothes and utensils, sweeping and mopping the floor and babysitting, has been fixed at a minimum of ₹6,836 a month, while qualified home nurses should get at least ₹8,051 for similar hours. The remuneration for those who stay with their employers – skilled, unskilled and semi-skilled – is 10% higher than this.

The notification said the minimum wage was fixed based on recommendations from an eight-member committee headed by the deputy commissioner of labour, Coimbatore, after various meetings with domestic workers’ unions, labour inspectors and employers. “From January to June last year, we travelled to 10 districts and held discussions with domestic workers associations to understand their needs,” said a member of the committee. Besides interviews, the team also factored in the average consumer price index in Chennai city in 2015 while fixing the rate, she said.

While Tamil Nadu, along with Kerala, Rajasthan and Punjab, has been lauded for including domestic helps in the schedule of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 – entitling these workers to file cases before authorities concerned in this regard – Tamil Nadu has lagged in fixing a minimum wage.

Advocate David Sunder Singh, who deals with labour issues, said workers can seek legal recourse for labour and human rights violations. “If an employer pays less than an agreed sum, it is a labour issue. If an employer pays less than the minimum wage, it is a human rights violation,” he said. The burden of proof rests with the employers. Singh quoted a 1982 SC order which said if a person receives less than the minimum wage, it amounts to forced labour. The employers can be tried under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, Minimum Wages Act, 1948 and IPC Sections 370 and 374, which invite imprisonment of up to seven years with fine. “Even an oral agreement will suffice as evidence,” said Singh.

While the government has no clue about the number of domestic workers in TN, unions estimate it to be around 18 lakh, a majority of them are in the semi-skilled category.

The notification has evoked mixed reactions from employers and domestic workers.

Valarmathi of National Domestic Workers’ Movement said the minimum wage was too little. “When the government asked us for recommendation, we had suggested ₹75 per hour. The wage they have fixed now is what we had suggested in 2010. What we need is a living wage not a minimum wage,” said Valarmathi whose association has 2,000 members in Chennai. Although the notification said dearness allowance would go up with the increase in consumer price index, union leaders were sceptical. “Although the revision should be done annually, industrial workers don’t get it. The domestic sector is unmonitored” said T A Latha, head of south Chennai Metropolitan Domestic Workers’ Union, which has 5,000 members. She cautioned against minimum wage being used as a yardstick. “Employers shouldn’t pat themselves when they see they pay more than the minimum wage,” she said. Residents now pay between ₹2,000 and ₹6,000 a month for an hour’s work.

Employers, on the other hand, have appealed to the state for more specific guidelines. “It would have helped had the government specified how many days off workers are entitled to and when we are allowed to deduct their salary. Some of us bear with shoddy work and extended periods of leave because we find it difficult to find a replacement,” said T Mohan, a resident of Virgumbakkam.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party said on Wednesday that it would like to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other foreign heads of states to the PM-elect Imran Khan’s oath ceremony.

Though the party has already invited Indian celebrities like Aamir Khan, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Navjot Singh Sidhu, it has asked the foreign office to confirm whether foreign heads of states could be invited to the PM’s swearing-in ceremony, scheduled to take place in Islamabad on August 11, three days before the country’s Independence Day.

A day earlier, the PTI had denied reports that it was considering inviting PM Modi and other heads of Saarc countries for the ceremony.

Tens of thousands of engineering graduates from Anna University might have got their degrees by bribing professors who re-evaluated their answer sheets, an investigation by the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) suggests. The agency filed an FIR on Tuesday naming former controller of examinations G V Uma and nine professors for rigging answer sheets for money.

TOI reported in May 2016 that 40% of candidates who applied for re-evaluation since 2011 had got more marks. The DVAC probe found students paid ₹10,000 as bribe for each re-evaluated paper of the April-May 2017 exams. Some 3,02,380 students had applied for re-evaluation, of which 73,733 students passed and 16,636 students got higher marks after the recheck. Between 2015 and 2018, Uma was in charge of exams and re-evaluation of papers for the university’s 530 affiliated colleges which annually admit 1.5 lakh students. The FIR said Uma, along with assistant professors P Vijayakumar and R Sivakumar took money to forge answer scripts and increase marks.

The other seven accused are examiners responsible for coordinating and conducting the reevaluation process at the University College of Engineering, Tindivanam, where the scam was uncovered. “When they smelled trouble, they destroyed a large number of answer scripts,” said an official. The officers, however, managed to get around 100 scripts as evidence.

Uma, meanwhile, said the charges were false. “I’m true to my conscience ... God is with me,” she said. DVAC has slapped cheating and forgery charges, and seized property documents after raids at houses of Uma, Vijaykumar and Sivakumar.

4-month-old dies on flight from Bengaluru to Patna

An IndiGo flight from Bengaluru to Patna was diverted to Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), on Tuesday, after a four-month-old boy developed health complications on board. The infant was rushed to the Apollo clinic at RGIA where, according to police, he was declared brought dead.

The Patna-bound IndiGo flight 6E 897, took off from Bengaluru at 6.09am. An hour-and-half later, the flight was diverted to the Shamshabad facility as baby Sparsh, travelling with his parents, Sandeep Kumar and Puneeta Sharma, developed breathing problems, RGIA SI Venkateswarulu said. By the time the flight landed in Hyderabad, authorities had made necessary arrangements to attend to the infant.

“The baby was brought to the emergency room of the Apollo clinic at RGIA around 7.45am. On examination, doctors confirmed that he was brought dead. While the actual cause of his death is not known, the doctors attending to the baby noticed slight bleeding from his nose,” said a source from Apollo hospital. Meanwhile, speaking about travelling with infants, hyderabad doctors said, “Any infant aged over two months can travel by air provided the child is not suffering from any major illness.” “Many a times, a mother makes the mistake of feeding a child during the flight without knowing that it can cause aspiration, with solid or liquid food entering the airway and lungs,” said Altaf Naseem, director, Candy Children's Hospital. City may soon see new bicycle sharing service

In a couple of months from now, the city may soon see a new bicycle sharing service. According to sources in the Coimbatore Corporation, the civic body has begun negotiations with a company that has evinced interest to launch service in the city.

The move comes close on the heels of the exit of 'ofo', a company that launched its service in and around R.S. Puram and wound up a couple of months ago after six months of trial period.

Sources say another round of negotiations will take place shortly with the company representatives, where it will be decided where they will operate, the number of bicycles they will launch and other details.

This again, will be for six months or so after which based on mutual consent, the civic body will extend permission for the company to operate in the city.

The civic body is looking at an area other than R.S. Puram for launching the service. The sources point out that the city's response to bicycle sharing by ofo was better than expected and vandalism was less than expected. But hoarding of bicycles was a major concern. The sources add that based on the experience gained from the bicycle sharing experiment, the Corporation is looking at facilitating a round-the-year bicycle service for the city by going in for a revenue sharing model. While the bicycle service provider will get to advertise in the bicycles, the company will have to share a part of the revenue gained by advertising with the Corporation.

Evening rain likely for a few days

In a welcome relief from the searing heat of the last few days, the city experienced light showers on Tuesday evening, which is likely to continue for a few more days.

Various areas in the city, including Alwarpet, Anna Salai and Chennai airport, experienced light showers. “The strengthening of westerly winds has caused the light rain. In the next few days, the forenoons will be warm and evenings will experience thunderstorms,” a Meteorological Department official said.

While Nungambakkam recorded 3.3 mm of rainfall, Meenambakkam recorded 10 mm. The dip in temperature brought much needed relief from the heat for residents.

Not just the city, parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry too experienced showers. Cuddalore, Tiruvarur and Villupuram saw light rain. Nagapattinam and Valparai recorded 3 cm of rainfall. This is likely to persist for the next 2-3 days and the sky will be cloudy and there may be light rain or thunderstorms in some districts.

Report sought on denial of college seat to transperson

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report of a transperson having been denied admission into a nursing programme, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered issue of notice to the authorities and has sought an action taken report.

State Human Rights Commission member D. Jayachandran directed the Health Secretary and the Director of Medical Education to submit their action taken report within two weeks.

He sought to know as to why the transperson — Tamilselvi — was not provided admission to a government nursing college at the appropriate time.

The State Human Rights Commission also wondered whether denying her admission into the nursing programme would constitute a violation of human rights.

Juggling responsibility

According to the media report, Tamilselvi from Vellore secured 74% of marks in the Class XII examination and applied for a nursing course.

While she was denied admission in government colleges, a private college, which initially accepted her application, rejected it later.

When Tamilselvi approached the Directorate of Medical Education, it directed her to the Nursing Council of India, which in turn pointed to a judgment of the Supreme Court.

The judgment said that it was up to the respective State governments to take a call.

The report added that there was no response to Tamilselvi’s plea for euthanasia addressed to the Health Secretary even after three months.

CBI had challenged the trial court verdict in ‘colour TV’ case

The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed an appeal preferred by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2009 challenging the acquittal of former Local Administration Minister T.M. Selvaganapathy from a case related to the purchase of colour television sets for panchayats in the State between 1993 and 1996. Mr Selvaganapathy, now a DMK functionary, was in the AIADMK then.

Justice G. Jayachandran dismissed the appeal on the ground that prosecution’s failure to marshal adequate evidence to prove charges of corruption had forced the trial court to acquit the accused. He refrained from interfering in any way with the verdict delivered by a Special Court for CBI cases here on January 23, 2009. “After perusal of the entire records and the submissions made by the counsels, this court finds plausible the reasons given by the trial court for acquitting the accused,” the judge said. He added that the statement of the approver in the case did not inspire the confidence of the court.

Amendments for senior citizens’ council

Empowers the council to review the standards and working of old age homes

Aiming at improving the functions of the State Council of Senior Citizens, the State government has made certain amendments in the Tamil Nadu Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rules, 2009 specifying the council’s functions, duties and responsibilities.

The recent amendment empowers the council to review the status of maintenance claim cases reported by parents and senior citizens, once in six months or whenever necessary.

A G.O. issued recently also provides for ensuring the life and property of senior citizens by reviewing the progress of probe into crimes against them and prosecution of registered offences.

Reviewing the working of old age homes and ensuring their conforming to the standards laid down, monitoring the work of maintenance officer, conciliation officer and reviewing the progress in cases pending in maintenance tribunals and ensuring timely and fair disposal of applications are among the notified functions of the council.

The council will also have to ensure that volunteer committees are formed to liaise between senior citizens living alone and the police to review the departments concerned, to make recommendations to the State government about any modifications in the mode of implementation of any of the provisions of the Act.

In case of a vacancy in the council, the State-level nodal officer and convener of the council are to submit a report to the government towards filling the vacancy immediately.

City-based engineering colleges losing sheen?

Number of unfilled seats point to a new phase, say some

In the first round of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission counselling this year, Chennai region colleges have not performed as well as Coimbatore region.

Some college officials say it is still too early to conclude but some others believe early trends point to a new phase.

Though Anna University departments and some of the colleges like PSG and SSN seem to have filled seats in the Open Category many colleges in Chennai which have seen admission in the cut off range of 195 and 192 are expecting students.

Sai Prakash Leo of Sai Ram Engineering College says there has been a steady dip in the applicants in the cut off ranges of 191.75, 187 and 164.5 since 2016. In the 191.75 cut off, 2,600 fewer students have applied; similarly in the 164.5 cut off mark, 12,195 fewer candidates are competing, he says.

Sadagopan Rajkumar, head of biomedical engineering at Rajalakshmi Engineering College, says Chennai-based colleges may have slid as more colleges in the Coimbatore region are autonomous. “Students find Anna University’s curriculum tough and have probably not chosen colleges affiliated to the University,” he surmised.

“Our competition is with SSN. Last year we won the gold and SSN silver medal in biomedical engineering. We have to wait and see the performance in the next round,” he added.

His worry is that if the cut-off marks during entry is lower, the performance would be affected. “We don’t know how the public missed the co-curriculur strength of the colleges,” he says.

Coimbatore-based colleges attribute the preference to students from further south and nearby Tiruchi region which have fewer colleges with good rating. S. Kuppuswami, principal of Kongu College says Coimbatore has the advantage of having some of the established colleges such as CIT, PSG and GCT.

As for students opting for other colleges, he says institution’s approach to discipline also matters. A college that has established a reputation for discipline on the campus may keep students away, he reasons. He notices it even in his college, he points out. Students would opt for a college that allows more freedom, he says.

It is not the tough curriculum as much as the students’ perception of a college, he says. College officials say the results of the next round of counselling would see more seats filling up and also show a clearer trend.

121-year-old heritage building to showcase history of institute

To the east of Madras Medical College (MMC) stands a building referred to as ‘Red Fort’. The 121-year-old heritage building, which is currently being restored to its old glory, will soon turn into a museum.

Constructed in 1897, the red brick structure has been classified as a Grade I heritage building by the Justice E. Padmanabhan Committee on heritage structures. The Indo-Saracenic style building housed the Department of Anatomy for several decades.

“The building is a structure of grandeur. The idea is to renovate and preserve the heritage structure, and create a museum for students of schools and colleges,” said R. Jayanthi, dean of MMC and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

In 2013, the Department of Anatomy partially moved into the new MMC campus on the erstwhile central prison premises. In December 2017, the PWD began restoration work.

“The State government sanctioned Rs. 1.97 crore to restore the Anatomy Block to its old glory. Once the work is over, we intend to create a museum here. On the ground floor, we will showcase the history of MMC, while the first floor will have specimens for comparative anatomy,” said Sudha Seshayyan, Director, Anatomy, and Vice-Principal, MMC.

While specimens required for teaching anatomy to MBBS students were moved to the new campus, huge animal skeletons remained at the ‘Red Fort’.

“We are collecting materials that will help in tracing the history of MMC and have listed down nine to 10 broad areas. This includes exhibits on the life and contribution of renowned alumni. We are going to display old equipment used in the college,” she said.

Among the building’s distinctive features are sliding panels in the ceiling to adjust for lighting.A PWD official said a major portion of the restoration work is complete. “There were at least 30 to 40 cracks on the terrace, primarily due to ageing. We used a traditional mixture consisting of lime mortar, filter sand, ‘kadukkai’ and palm jaggery. This was allowed to soak for 15 days. The lime powder was brought from Virudhunagar ,” he explained.

Judge seeks details of Mumbai prison

India has three weeks to submit a video showing the natural light available to inmates of Barrack 12 of Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai as fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya’s defence team claimed the Indian government’s assurances “cannot be relied upon.”

Counselling for admission to self-financing medical colleges under management quota has been extended by two more days as 128 more seats are left vacant, state selection committee secretary G Selvarajan said. On Tuesday, the committee called 3,612 candidates and 693 attended counselling. Of these 286 students were allotted seats and 407 were waitlisted. Nearly 25 years after creating a splash by registering corruption case against a then key member of former CM J Jayalalithaa’s first cabinet, TM Selvaganapathy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lost the case, as Madras high court confirmed Selvaganapathy’s acquittal on Tuesday. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the purchase of 40,000 colour television sets between 1994 and 1996 for free distribution to panchayats. According to the CBI, the suspected fraud caused a loss of ₹10.16 crore to the exchequer.

However, rejecting the case on Tuesday, Justice G Jayachandran said: “After a careful perusal of the entire records and the submissions made by counsel, this court finds that the reasons given by the trial court for acquitting the accused is a plausible view. The prosecution failed to conduct the investigation properly and collect adequate materials to place before the court to substantiate the charges.” He was passing orders confirming the acquittal order passed by the special court for CBI cases, and dismissing an appeal filed by the central agency.

Failure on the part of the prosecution in marshalling the evidence to adequately prove the charges forced the trail court to acquit the accused.“This court is not inclined to interfere with the findings of the lower court,” the judge added.

There were two parallel proceedings in the matter. While the first case registered by CBCID featured former chief minister Jayalalithaa, her aide Sasikala and the then local administration minister Selvaganapathy, the CBI case did not name the first two as accused. Though all the accused were convicted by a trial court in August 2009, the high court reversed the verdict and acquitted all the accused in the CBCID case.

The CBI had also initiated penal proceedings in the colour TV scandal against senior officials of Electronic Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) which supplied the TVs. The case was separately tried in a special court for CBI cases. In January 2009, the CBI court acquitted all the accused, against which the CBI preferred the present appeal.

The charges were that Selvaganapathy, as minister of local administration, allegedly entered into criminal conspiracy with C Bommai Nayakar, then branch manager of ECIL, Chennai and B Purushothaman, deputy general manager, ECIL of Secundrabad and received ₹40.60 lakh as illegal gratification.

The CBI registered a case under sections120B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating) of IPC and under sections 7,13(2) read with 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Slogans against rape and child abuse rent the air as hundreds came together at Valluvar Kottam on Tuesday evening to condemn the brutal gang rape of a 11-year-old over a period of seven months.

While the girl’s sister and father demanded that all the rapists be hanged, other protesters chanted, ‘we condemn rape’, ‘rise up against sexual violence’, and ‘fight back now, don't wait until your daughter and sisters are raped’. The child’s sister said she was hoping for a speedy trial in the case and maximum punishment for the rapists.

She said the child is still recovering and has not returned to school.

“It will take a while for her to cope with the trauma. The girl is being given regular couselling,” she said, adding that she decided to participate in the event to create awareness and help prevent such incidents in the future.

Upset over some people blaming the family members for being negligent and not spotting behavioural changes in the girl, another relative said the men targeted the girl when she returned from school and when she went down to play inside the apartment complex.

“The family did not expect this to happen within a gated community,” said the relative.



“When even adults are wary of confronting sexual predators, it isn’t fair to expect the girl to gather the courage and report the issue to her family, since she was being threatened by her assaulters to remain silent,” he said.

Activists and other families from the apartment complex where the rape occurred expressed their solidarity with the girl and her family. Several passersby also joined in and highlighted the need for stringent punishment for those who abuse children.

The hearing impaired child was assaulted by at least 17 men who drugged her with injections, spiked soft drinks and other substances.

The incident came to light when she reported it to her sister on July 15.

Five men petition mahila court for bail
Chennai:

Five of the 17 accused arrested in the gang rape have approached a mahila court here for bail. The applications have been filed by prime accused Murugesh, Jai Ganesh, Surya, Jayaraman, and Rajasekhar. The petitions are likely to be taken up for hearing by judge Manjula by the end this week. Though advocate associations had said its members would not represent the accused, some of the suspects families had managed to find lawyers to defend their men while a few others have got lawyers through the free legal aid scheme. Recently, the court allowed the police custodial interrogation of the accused. On Tuesday, all the 17 were once again remanded back to judicial custody till August 10. TNN

Daughter co-pilots airhostess mom’s last flight

The public announcement system crackled when Air India’s Bengaluru-Mumbai flight commenced its descent on Tuesday morning.

Passengers half expected the usual information of congestion and delayed landing, but what Captain Paresh Nerurkar said from the flight deck brought tears to many eyes.

He told the flyers that the plane’s senior-most airhostess, Pooja Chinchankar, will retire on landing — after 38 years of service. And that her legacy will be carried forward by Pooja’s daughter, Ashrrita, who was with him in the cockpit as co-pilot on the Airbus A-319 to Mumbai, where the Chinchankars live.

Pooja walked down the aisle to the applause of the flyers. And when the flight landed at Mumbai airport, the Chinchankars greeted the passengers as they deboarded.

Mom would address me as captain: AI pilot

“They were all gushing how alike we looked and wished the best for my mother’s retired life,” said an emotional Ashrrita as Pooja, 58, looked at her proudly, her lifelong dream fulfilled.

“When I joined Indian Airlines in 1980, there were only two woman pilots in the company, including Captain Saudamini Deshmukh (India’s first woman commander). Some years later, I had a daughter and I wanted her to become a pilot. During her growing years, she saw me getting ready to go to the airport in my graceful uniform of a flight crew, interacting with my colleagues and the family flying together for vacations,” Pooja said.

When Ashrrita was completing school, her mother and father, bank manager, asked her if she wanted to become a pilot. “I went to Canada for my pilot training in 2006 when India was seeing huge demand for pilots (new airlines like IndiGo, Kingfisher, Air Deccan, SpiceJet and GoAir had just started operations then). When I returned in 2008 with my commercial pilot licence, the recession had begun and there were no jobs for pilots,” Ashrrita said.

This was the time when Indian carriers had started feeling serious strain after Jet and Kingfisher’s expensive takeovers of Air Sahara and Air Deccan, respectively, and Air India-IA combine facing merger woes. The family struggled in this phase to keep Ashrrita’s licence valid.

Finally in 2016, she got a job in Air India and joined on the A-320 fleet.

Pooja, manager inflight service (senior cabin crew), wanted her daughter to do her retirement flight which was on Tuesday. In the morning, the duo operated AI 603 from Mumbai to Bangalore and then a quick turnaround back to Mumbai as AI 604. “AI is my family. I will take her legacy forward in the airline. We want AI to be the star in the sky,” said Ashrrita.

In a tweet to Ashrrita, AI said: “Our heartfelt wishes to your mother and you for this special flight when she passes the baton on to you to have the privilege of serving our passengers with dedication. The legacy lives on.”

இன்று 35 வயதுக்காரர்களுக்கெல்லாம் இதயநோய் வருகிறது. சர்க்கரை நோய் பொதுநோயாகி விட்டது. முகம் சோர்வாக இருந்தாலே, சர்க்கரை நோய் டெஸ்ட் செய்துகொள் என்று பிறர் ஆலோசனை சொல்லும் அளவுக்கு அந்தநோய் இளம் தலைமுறையைப் பீடித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. 95 வயதில், முதுமை உடலை பீடித்து முடக்கிப்போட்டிருக்கும் இந்த நிமிடம் வரை கருணாநிதியின் இதயம் ஆரோக்கியமாகத் துடித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. சர்க்கரை உட்பட எவ்விதமான நோய்களும் அவரை நெருங்கியதில்லை.

இந்த அளவுக்குத் திட்டமிட்ட வாழ்க்கை முறை. எவ்வளவு பரபரப்பான பணிகளுக்கு மத்தியிலும் உடற்பயிற்சி, யோகா என உடலை ஆரோக்கியமாக வைத்துக்கொள்ள மிகவும் மெனக்கெடுவார் கருணாநிதி.

`அதிகாலையில் எழுபவன் இன்னொரு நாளைப் பெறுகிறான்' என்பார்கள். கருணாநிதி இரவு எத்தனை மணிக்குப் படுக்கைக்குச் சென்றாலும் காலை ஐந்து மணிக்கு எழுந்துவிடுவதை வழக்கமாக வைத்திருந்தார். இந்த நடைமுறையை மிகவும் கடுமையாகப் பின்பற்றினார். உடன் பயணிப்பவர்கள், உதவியாளர்களெல்லாம் மிரண்டு போவார்கள்.



சிறுவயது முதலே விளையாட்டில் அவருக்கு ஆர்வமுண்டு. பூப்பந்து, கபடி... இரண்டும் அவருக்குப் பிடித்த விளையாட்டுகள். நண்பர்களோடு கபடி விளையாடி சில நேரங்களில் படுகாயங்கள் கூட ஏற்பட்டுள்ளதாக அவர் பேட்டிகளில் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

31 வயதில் கருணாநிதி சென்ற கார் ஒரு விபத்தில் சிக்கியது. அதில் அவரது கண் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. கண்ணில் அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்ய நேர்ந்தது. அதன்பிறகே, பவருடன் கூடிய கறுப்புக்கண்ணாடியை அவர் அணிய ஆரம்பித்தார். காலையில் கண்ணாடியை அணிந்தால் இரவு உறங்கச் செல்வதற்கு முன்புதான் கழட்டுவார்.



தொடக்கத்தில், வாரத்தில் இரண்டு நாள்கள் தலைக்கு எண்ணெய் தேய்த்துக் குளிப்பதை வழக்கமாக வைத்திருந்தார். கண்ணில் அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்யப்பட்டபிறகு எண்ணெய் தேய்த்துக் குளிப்பதை விட்டுவிட்டார்.

ஒருமுறை கன்னத்தில் வீக்கம் ஏற்பட்டு வதைத்தது. `உல்லன் நூல் பட்டால் நல்லது' என்று மருத்துவர் சொல்ல அதன்பிறகு உல்லன் சால்வை அணிய ஆரம்பித்தார். பிறகு மருத்துவரின் ஆலோசனைப்படி மஞ்சள் சால்வை அணிவதை வழக்கமாக்கிக்கொண்டார்.

உணவு விஷயத்திலும் கருணாநிதி மிகவும் கட்டுப்பாடாக இருப்பார். சாப்பாட்டில் தேங்காய் பயன்பாடு அறவே ஆகாது. இட்லிக்குக் கூட தேங்காய்ச் சட்னி வைத்துக்கொள்ள மாட்டார். கொத்தமல்லி சட்னி, தக்காளிச் சட்னி, வெங்காயச் சட்னி, சாம்பார்தான் ஊற்றிக்கொள்வார். ஆப்பம் என்றால் தேங்காய்ப்பாலுக்குப் பதில் பசும்பால் சேர்த்துக்கொள்வார். எண்ணெயும் குறைவாகப் பயன்படுத்துவார்.

வெளியில் சாப்பிடுவது அவருக்குப் பிடிக்கவே பிடிக்காது. பிள்ளைகள் உணவகத்தில் சாப்பிட்டால் கூடத் திட்டுவார். வெளியூர் சென்றால், கூடவே ஒரு சமையல் குழுவும் உடன் செல்லும். ஒருநாள் பயணமென்றால் மிகவும் பிடித்த நண்பர்கள் வீட்டில் சாப்பிடுவார்.

முன்பெல்லாம் மதியம் 12 மணிக்கு சிக்கன் சூப் குடிப்பார். வீட்டில் நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு சம்பவத்துக்குப் பிறகு சிக்கன் , மட்டன் சாப்பிடுவதை அறவே நிறுத்திவிட்டார், சிக்கன் சூப் வெஜிடபிள் சூப் ஆகிவிட்டது. சூப் குடிப்பதற்கு ஒருமணி நேரத்துக்கு முன்பு ஒரு கப் காபி குடிப்பார். வெயில் காலமென்றால் காபிக்குப் பதில் இளநீர். மாதம் மூன்று முறை மீன் சாப்பிட்டுக்கொண்டு இருந்தார். கடந்த இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளாக, திரவ உணவுகளை முற்றிலுமாக தவிர்த்துவிட்டார் கருணாநிதி.

மதிய சாப்பாட்டில் கண்டிப்பாக ஒரு கீரை இருக்க வேண்டும். கத்தரிக்காய், முள்ளங்கி விரும்பிச் சாப்பிடுவார். குழம்புதான் விரும்புவார். வறுவல், பொறியல் உணவுகளை முற்றிலும் தவிர்த்து விட்டார். மாலை நேரத்தில் தோசை இருக்க வேண்டும். 70 வயதுக்கு மேல் பிரெட் சாப்பிடத் தொடங்கினார். டீயில் தொட்டுச் சாப்பிடுவது பிடிக்கும். இரவு, இரண்டு சப்பாத்தியும் குருமாவும். திராட்சை, சப்போட்டா, பப்பாளி, பேரிச்சம்பழங்களும் சாப்பிடுவார்.

வயிறு நிறைய சாப்பிடுவதில்லை. அளவோடுதான் சாப்பிடுவார். அறிவாலயம் கட்டத் தொடங்கியபிறகு வாக்கிங் செல்வதை வழக்கமாக்கிக் கொண்டார். நடக்க இயன்ற காலம் வரை தினமும் 20 நிமிடமாவது வாக்கிங் சென்றுவிடுவார். யோகக்கலை வல்லுநரான தேசிக்காச்சாரியிடம் யோகா கற்றுக்கொண்டார். வாக்கிங் முடிந்ததும் யோகா செய்யத் தவறுவதில்லை. வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும்போதெல்லாம் இஞ்சி, ஏலக்காய் போட்ட டீ அருந்துவார். இடையிடையே கேரட் டாலட் சாப்பிடுவார். கேரட்டைப் பொடியாக நறுக்கி அதோடு எலுமிச்சை சாறு, உப்புச் சேர்த்துத் தருவார்கள்.

வெயிலோ, பனியோ, வெதுவெதுப்பான நீரில் குளிப்பது அவருக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு மூச்சுப்பயிற்சி, சூரிய நமஸ்காரம் போன்றவற்றையும் செய்யத் தொடங்கினார். கடும் உழைப்புக்கு மத்தியில் ஆரோக்கியத்தின் மேல் அவர் காட்டிய அக்கறைதான் உடல் வலிமைக்கு மட்டுமன்றி மன வலிமைக்கும் உறுதுணையாய் இருந்திருக்கிறது என்கிறார்கள் மருத்துவர்கள்.

கோபாலபுரத்தில் வீட்டுக்கு அருகிலேயே இருக்கும் டாக்டர் கோபால்தான் கருணாநிதியின் உடல்நிலையை முற்றிலும் அறிந்தவர். தினமும் வந்து சர்க்கரை அளவையும், ரத்த அழுத்தத்தையும் பரிசோதிப்பார். நட்பு அடிப்படையில் நரம்பியல் மருத்துவர் டாக்டர் ராமமூர்த்தியும் செக் அப் செய்வதுண்டு.

2006-ம் ஆண்டில், முதுமையின் காரணமாக, மூட்டுகள் உடம்பைத் தாங்கும் சக்தியை இழந்துவிட்டன. இருந்தாலும் அவரது இயல்பு வாழ்க்கையைப் பெரிதாகப் பாதிக்கவில்லை. சக்கர நாற்காலியைப் பயன்படுத்த ஆரம்பித்தார். அதன் பின்னரும்கூட தினமும் காலை ஒரு மணிநேரம் எளிய முறையில் யோகா, மூச்சுப் பயிற்சி செய்து வந்தார். நடப்பது குறைந்துவிட்டதால், வாரம் ஒருமுறை கை, கால்களுக்கு ஆயில் மசாஜ் செய்வதுண்டு.

கருணாநிதி அடிக்கடி எதிர்கொண்ட பிரச்னை, செரிமான பிரச்னைதான். கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக சாதத்தை மிக்ஸியில் போட்டு திரவமாக்கியே சாப்பிட்டு வந்திருக்கிறார்.

நெஞ்சுச்சளி காரணமாக 2016 ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பரில் அவருக்கு மூச்சுத்திணறல் ஏற்பட்டது. பிறகு மருத்துவமனையில் நெஞ்சுச்சளி அகற்றப்பட்டது. ஆனாலும் கருணாநிதியின் வயதைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு தொடர்ச்சியான சுவாசத்துக்காக `ட்ரக்கியோடோமி' கருவி நிரந்தரமாகப் பொருத்தப்பட்டது. மருத்துவர்கள். கழுத்துக்குக் கீழே துளையிடப்பட்டு இக்கருவி பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளதால், அவரால் பேசமுடியவில்லை. அந்த சமயங்களில் விழிக்கும் நேரம், தூங்கும் நேரம் ஒழுங்கில்லாமல் போனது. படிப்படியாகச் செயல்பாடுகள் குறைந்தன.

வயோதிகம் அவரை முடக்கிபோட்டதே தவிர, நோய்களின் காரணமாக அவரது உடல்நிலை பாதிக்கப்படவில்லை. அவரின் மனோதிடமும் எந்தச் சூழலிலும் விடாமல் செய்த உடற்பயிற்சிகளும் யோகாவும் உணவுக்கட்டுப்பாடும்தான் இந்தச் சூழலை எதிர்கொள்ளும் வலிமையைக் கொடுத்திருக்கின்றன!

காவேரி மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் தி.மு.க. தலைவர் கருணாநிதியைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக, கட்சித் தொண்டர்கள் திரண்டுவருவதால், சென்னை ஆழ்வார்பேட்டை மட்டுமல்லாது நகரின் பல்வேறு பகுதிகளிலும் மக்கள் நடமாட்டம் வழக்கத்தைவிட அதிகரித்துக் காணப்படுகிறது. காவேரி மருத்துவமனை வளாகத்தில் திரளும் தி.மு.க. தொண்டர்களை அப்புறப்படுத்தவும் முடியாமல், அவர்களுக்குச் சமாதானமும் சொல்ல முடியாமல் போலீஸாரும், கட்சியின் மூத்த நிர்வாகிகளும் திணறுகின்றனர்.

'அப்பா நல்லா இருக்கார், அவருக்கு ஒரு குறையும் இல்லை' என்று கனிமொழி எம்.பி-யும், 'நானே கிளம்பி வீட்டுக்குப் போறேன்யா, அதைப் பார்த்துமா தெரியலே... தலைவர் நல்லாயிட்டாருய்யா' என்று மு.க. அழகிரியும் தொண்டர்களுக்கு குளுகோஸ் ஏற்றிச் சென்றனர். 'என் மகனுக்குத் தலைவர்தான், உதயசூரியன் என்று பெயர் வைத்தார். என் தந்தை போன்றவர் கலைஞர். அவர் குணமானால், நான் என் தலைமுடியைக் காணிக்கையாகக் கொடுக்கிறேன்' என்றபடி திருவாரூரைச் சேர்ந்த தி.மு.க. தொண்டர் ஒருவர், மருத்துவமனை அருகிலேயே மொட்டை போட்டுக் கொண்டார். 'தலைவர், குணமாகி வந்ததும் முதல்ல உன் மொட்டையிலதான் ஒரு குட்டு வைக்கப் போறாரு, தலைவருக்கு மொட்டை போடுறதும் பிடிக்காது. பிறரை மொட்டை அடிப்பதும் பிடிக்காது' என்று சிலேடையாக ஒருவர் கமென்ட் அடித்தார்.

கண்களில் இருந்து கசியும் கண்ணீருடன், அந்தக் கமென்ட் அடித்தவர், தி.மு.க. வழக்கறிஞரான ஆர்.கே.நகர் மருதுகணேஷ். 'எப்படியாவது மருத்துவமனைக்குள் நுழைந்து விடவேண்டும்' என்ற எண்ணத்தில் மிகுந்த பிரயத்தனம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த தொண்டர்களை அதிகளவில் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. காவேரி மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் பிற நோயாளிகளின் உறவினர்கள், கழுத்தில் அந்தந்த வார்டுக்கான அடையாள அட்டையுடனேயே, மருத்துவமனையை விட்டு வெளியே வருவதும், உள்ளே போவதுமாக இருக்கிறார்கள். போலீஸார் அறிவுறுத்தலின்பேரில், மருத்துவமனையில் குறிப்பிட்ட கேட்டையே அவர்கள் பயன்படுத்தி வருகின்றனர். வெளியூரில் இருந்து வந்திருந்த சில தி.மு.க. தொண்டர்கள், அவர்களிடம், "நீங்க எந்த வார்டுப் பக்கம் இருக்கீங்க, நாலாவது மாடியிலயா? தலைவர் எப்படி இருக்காரு? பேப்பர்லாம் படிக்கிறாரா?" என்றெல்லாம் வெள்ளந்தியாக விசாரித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.



சிலர் இன்னும் ஒருபடி மேலேபோய், "நீங்க வெளியே போகும்போது எங்களை உங்களோட சொந்தக்காரர்னு சொல்லி மருத்துவமனைக்குள்ளே கூட்டிட்டுப் போயிடறீங்களா?" என்று கெஞ்சிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். "ஒரு நோயாளிக்கு ஒரு விசிட்டர் மட்டும்தான் இருக்க முடியும். நாங்கள் திரும்பிச் செல்லும்போது யாரையாவது, உள்ளே அழைத்துப் போவதாக இருந்தால் முன்கூட்டியே மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகத்தில் சொல்லி, என்ட்ரி போட்டால் மட்டுமே அழைத்துச் செல்ல முடியும். அப்படியே நாங்கள் உங்களைக் கூட்டிக் கொண்டு போனாலும், எங்க 'விஸிட்டர் பாஸ்' இருக்கும் அறையைத் தாண்டி, நீங்கள் வேறு இடத்துக்குப் போகமுடியாது. அடுத்தமுறை வரும்போது, கண்டிப்பாக உங்களை உள்ளே அழைத்துப் போகப் பார்க்கிறேன்" என்று தெரிவித்தார் ஒரு நோயாளியின் அட்டெண்டர்.

"முன்னாள் முதல்வர் கருணாநிதியின் உடல்நிலை சீராக உள்ளது. மருத்துவர்கள் தொடர்ந்து கண்காணித்து வருகின்றனர். ஸ்டாலின், கனிமொழி ஆகியோரிடமும் விவரம் கேட்டறிந்தேன். துணை முதல்வர் ஓ.பன்னீர்செல்வமும், நானும் கருணாநிதியை நேரில் பார்த்தோம்" என்று அவர் சொன்னதும், தி.மு.க. தொண்டர்கள் கூடுதல் உற்சாகம் அடைந்தனர். திருச்சி சிவா, டி.கே.எஸ். இளங்கோவன், ஆ.ராசா போன்ற தி.மு.க.வின் முன்னணித் தலைவர்கள், கருணாநிதி உடல்நிலை குறித்து உற்சாகமாகப் பேட்டி அளித்தபோதிலும், கடந்த சில நாட்களாகவே தூக்கம் தொலைத்திருந்ததால், அவர்களின் முகம் வாடியிருந்ததைக்கூட தொண்டர்களால் ஏற்க முடியவில்லை. பேட்டியளித்தத் தலைவர்களின் முகக்குறிப்புகளை வைத்து, கருணாநிதியின் உடல் நலத்தை ஆராய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். தி.மு.க.வின் முக்கிய தலைவர்களில் ஒருவரான துரைமுருகன் மட்டும் மருத்துவமனை வளாகத்தில், சிரித்த முகத்துடன் அங்குமிங்கும் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். அங்கிருந்த தொண்டர்களிடம் "நான் இவ்வளவு சந்தோஷமா இருக்கும்போதே நீங்களெல்லாம் கிளம்பி வீட்டுக்குப் போயிருக்க வேண்டாமா? என் சிரிப்புக்கும், சந்தோஷத்துக்கும் காரணமே தலைவர்தானப்பா... அவர், நல்லா இருக்காருப்பா... முன்னைவிட வேகமான பழைய தலைவரை அறிவாலயத்துல நீங்களெல்லாம் பார்க்கப் போறீங்க" என்று அவர் சொன்னதும் அங்கே எழுந்த ஆரவாரமும், விசில் சத்தமும் அடங்க வெகுநேரம் பிடித்தது. துரைமுருகனின் பேச்சை ஊடகங்களும் விடாமல் ஒளிபரப்ப, மருத்துவமனை முன் திரண்டிருந்த தி.மு.க.வினருக்கு கூடுதல் நம்பிக்கை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஈரோட்டை அடுத்த சென்னிமலை அருகே, பணத்துக்காக அக்கா உறவுமுறை கொண்ட பெண் ஒருவரை இளைஞர் ஒருவர் கழுத்தை நெரித்துக் கொலைசெய்த சம்பவம் பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது.

ஈரோடு மாவட்டம், சென்னிமலையை அடுத்த முகாசிபிடாரியூர் பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் ஆறுமுகம் - சிந்து தம்பதியினர். ஆறுமுகம் பெருந்துறை சிப்காட் பகுதியில் உள்ள தொழிற்சாலை ஒன்றில் எலெக்ட்ரீஷியனாகவும், சிந்து சென்னிமலை பகுதியில் உள்ள ரியல் எஸ்டேட் நிறுவனம் ஒன்றில் அலுவலகப் பணியாளராகவும் வேலைபார்த்து வந்துள்ளனர். தம்பதியினர் இருவருமே வேலைக்குப் போனாலும், அவ்வப்போது கடன் வாங்கியே குடும்பத்தை நடத்திவந்திருக்கின்றனர். இந்த நிலையில், கடந்த சில நாள்களுக்கு முன்பு, குடும்பச் செலவுக்காக ஆறுமுகம் தன்னுடைய உறவினரான தனசேகர் என்பவரிடம் 5 ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் பணம் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். ‘என்னிடம் இல்லை, வேறு யாரிடமாவது கேட்டு ஏற்பாடுசெய்து கொடுக்கிறேன்’ என தனசேகர் கூறியிருக்கிறார்.



இதற்கிடையே, கடந்த ஜூலை 28-ம் தேதி காலை, ஆறுமுகத்துக்கு போன் செய்த தனசேகர், ‘தோப்புபாளையத்தில் நண்பர் ஒருவர் கடனாக பணம் தருகிறேன் என்கிறார். நீ அல்லது உன்னுடைய மனைவி என யாராவது வந்தால் வாங்கித் தருகிறேன்’ என கரிசனம் காட்டுவது போல் பேசியிருக்கிறார். வேலையை விட்டுவிட்டு வரமுடியாது என்பதாலும், தனசேகர் உறவினர் என்பதால் அவர் மேல் உள்ள நம்பிக்கையாலும், ‘என்னுடைய மனைவியை அழைத்துச்சென்று வாங்கி வா’ என ஆறுமுகம் கூறியிருக்கிறார்.
 
ஆறுமுகத்தினுடைய மனைவி சிந்துவை அவர் வேலைசெய்யும் அலுவலகத்துக்குச் சென்று அழைத்துக்கொண்டு, ஊத்துக்குளி அருகேயுள்ள அரசண்ண மலை அடிவாரம் அருகே போய், ‘எனக்கு கொஞ்சம் பணம் தேவைப்படுகிறது. பணம் இல்லாமல் திண்டாடி வருகிறேன். உன்னுடைய தாலிச் செயினை கழற்றிக் கொடு’ என கேட்டிருக்கிறார். அதைக் கேட்டு அதிர்ந்துபோன சிந்து, ‘தாலிச் செயினை கழற்றிக் கொடுன்னு சொல்ற... நீ எல்லாம் ஒரு ஆம்பளையா?’ எனக் கத்தியிருக்கிறார். ஒருகட்டத்தில் சிந்துவின் மூச்சை ஒரேடியாக நிறுத்த நினைத்த தனசேகர், சேலையால் சிந்துவின் கழுத்தை நெறித்துக் கொலைசெய்திருக்கிறார். பிறகு, அருகே கிடந்த கற்களை எடுத்து இறந்துகிடந்த சிந்துவின் மீது குவியலாக அடுக்க முயன்றிருக்கிறார். அது சரிவராததால், பிணத்தை அப்படியே விட்டுவிட்டு, சிந்துவினுடைய ஐந்தரை பவுன் தாலிக்கொடியை மட்டும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு அங்கிருந்து தப்பியிருக்கிறார்.

அதன்பிறகு, தனசேகர் அவருடைய உறவினர் ஒருவரை அழைத்துச்சென்று, அந்த நகையை 60 ஆயிரம் ரூபாய்க்கு அடகு வைத்து பணம் வாங்கியிருக்கிறார். அந்தப் பணத்தில், 5 ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை எடுத்துச் சென்று கொலைசெய்த சிந்துவின் கணவர் ஆறுமுகத்திடம், ‘அக்காவை பஸ் பிடித்து வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்பிட்டேன். இந்தா 5 ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் பணம்’ என கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். பணத்தை வாங்கிய ஆறுமுகம், வேலையை முடிந்து வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றபோது, வீட்டில் அவருடைய மனைவி சிந்து இல்லை. மனைவியை பல இடங்களில் தேடி அலைந்தவருக்கு, ஒருகட்டத்தில் தனசேகர் மீது சந்தேகம் வந்திருக்கிறது. தனசேகரிடம் விசாரிக்கையில், அவர் முன்னுக்குப் பின் முரணாகப் பேசியிருக்கிறார். இதனால், சந்தேகமடைந்த ஆறுமுகம், தன்னுடைய மனைவியை காணவில்லை என்றும் தனசேகர் மீது சந்தேகம் இருப்பதாகவும் புகார் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.



போலீஸார் விசாரணையில்,‘நான்தான் சிந்துவை பணத்துக்காகக் கொலைசெய்தேன். எனக்கும் சிந்துவுக்கும் தவறான உறவு இருந்தது. அந்த உரிமையில் நான் கேட்டால், தாலிச்செயினை கழற்றித் தருவாள் என நினைத்தேன். ஆனால், அவள் கத்தி கூச்சல் போட்டதால், எனக்கு கோபம் தலைக்கேறி, கழுத்தை நெறித்துக் கதையை முடித்துவிட்டேன்’ என கேஷூவலாகக் கூறியிருக்கிறார். இதையடுத்து, தனசேகரை போலீஸார் கைதுசெய்து சிறையில் அடைத்தனர். பணத்துக்காக நன்கு தெரிந்த உறவினரையே கொலைசெய்த சம்பவம் சென்னிமலை பகுதி மக்களை அதிர்ச்சியடைய வைத்திருக்கிறது.

CHENNAI : Tamil Nadu , the land of spirituality and divinity, has some how turned out to be a land of rapes, the Madras High Court has observed.Justice N Kirubakaran made the observation, while hearing a case relating to the rape of a 60-year-old mentally-retarded woman on November 10, 2016. While he was sitting in the Madurai Bench, the case had been posted before him.“Even toddlers or children are not spared by these brute beasts. Something basically is wrong with the development of the society or the psychology of men,” the judge added.

Originally, when the matter came up before him on December 15 last year in the Madurai Bench, the judge raised a set of questions to be answered by the Union Home Affairs and the Women Welfare and Child Development ministries in New Delhi, all relating to the cause for increase in sexual crimes against women and children in India.Now, the judge warned that if the response was not filed by the next hearing date, the respective Secretaries of the relevant departments shall appear before the court.

CHENNAI:Residents of AGS colony who went to the Chennai Corporation ground in the locality to relax on Sunday were taken by surprise after they found arrangements in the ground for a private birthday party, complete with rows of chairs, a shamiana and a banner.

Members of the AGS colony residents association, who went to inquire, said they found that the permission for the party was granted by the local Corporation AE (Assistant Engineer), who allegedly received ` 2,000 from the group in order to ‘permit’ the celebrations.

“The group initially attempted to use the room for indoor games in the playground for the party. After we protested, they said they will shift the party outside the ground since they don’t have anywhere else to go and they had already paid the money,” said Sam Ponraj, secretary of Kottivakkam AGS colony and neighbourhood residents association.

When contacted, R Siva, father of the child whose birthday party was to be conducted at the ground, said, “My brother also works in the corporation. So, we thought we will ask the AE and conduct the party in the ground itself.” He was not given a receipt for the payment, he said.

The incident came to light after David Manohar, member of Arappor Iyakkam, a Chennai-based NGO, posted the details on social media. When contacted, AE Dhandapani denied the allegations. “I have not rented the playground to anyone. I have no right to rent out a Corporation playground,” he said.

CHENNAI: In order to curb the footboard travel in trains, the Southern Railway has decided to cancel the railway passes and season tickets of passengers who travel on footboard in trains in Tamil Nadu. 

The decision was taken on Monday in the aftermath of the accident that took place on June 25, in which five rail passengers travelling on footboard of a fully crowded EMU train were killed after hitting a concrete fence at St Thomas Mount station.

“All types of passes including college student concession passes issued by the Railways, passes carried by wards of railway employees and regular season tickets will be cancelled if a person found travelling on footboard,” Louis Amuthan, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF, Chennai told Express.

According to official records, between January 1, 2016 and June 30 this year, footboard travel claimed the lives of 191 persons across the Southern Railway. During this period, the RPF has apprehended about 18,414 footboard travellers and collected a fine of `49.51 lakh.

“Majority of footboard travellers are college students and office-going youngsters. Railway passes of college students who are travelling on footboard will be confiscated and information will be given to the colleges concerned, which will be asked not to recommend such students for student passes. This means that once a student is caught for footboard travel, he or she will not be eligible to student railway passes,” said Amuthan, adding that the regular season tickets would also be confiscated from those who are hanging on the foot-board.

The Chennai suburban railway system caters for about 11.5 lakh passengers a day in four sections.
Naina Masilamani, a member of the Divisional Rail Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC), Chennai, said that before implementing such a move, the Railways should increase the frequency of trains during rush hour.

On Monday, Southern Circle Railway Safety Commissioner K A Manoharan conducted a public hearing in connection with the St Thomas Mount accident, at the Chennai divisional office. A railway official told Express that a decision on increasing the frequency of regular EMU trains and other operational changes would be taken based on the recommendations from the Railway Safety Commissioner.

Appeal to her to transfer them to a recognised college


Seeking action against the management of an unrecognised pharmacy college at Kadayanallur, a group of students staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday and submitted a petition to Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish.

The protesting students said the private pharmacy college at Kadayanallur, which lost its university recognition, continued to admit students for three years even after losing the mandatory recognition. Since the college’s name had been included in the university’s list of affiliated colleges, the students joined the institution after paying hefty capitation fee. Since the college had lost its recognition and the students could not write the examination, the district administration should transfer the affected students to some other college, the petitioners said.
