First round of PG medical counselling completed

The first round of counselling for postgraduate medical courses ended on Tuesday with 179 of the 753 candidates who attended the counselling being allotted seats in government medical colleges. As many as 50 candidates were allotted seats in self-financing medical colleges. A total of 524 candidates have opted to be wait-listed.

Of the 1,262 candidates called for counselling, 138 had been allotted seats under the all-India quota. Only 753 attended, according to the Tamil Nadu Medical Education Selection Committee.

Counselling for PG dental programmes will be held on Thursday. The first session will be held at 2 p.m. and the second session at 4 p.m.

Computer science syllabus to be different across three streams

Will be introduced in Class 11 across all State Board schools from this year

Instead of a uniform computer science subject for students across streams, students who will be entering Class 11 this academic year will have three different papers associated with computers — one each for the science, arts, and vocational streams.

An order issued by Director of School Education R. Elangovan has stated that while students of the science stream will have computer science as an option, students of the commerce and arts streams can choose the computer applications paper.

Vocational students will have a computer technology paper, which they will study as one among their six other papers.

“We felt that it was not justified for all streams to have one common computer science paper as every stream has topics that need to be prioritised. While science students will have computer science and study programming languages, the computer applications paper for commerce students will be more relevant to their subjects, such as accountancy and economics, and will have topics such as e-commerce, database management and software such as Tally,” said T. Udhayachandran, Additional Director of the School Education department.

This will be introduced in Class 11 across all State board schools in the State, as part of the syllabus revamp from the 2018-19 academic year.

Draft syllabus

The draft syllabus for all three papers have been released as well.

While students in the vocational stream were previously studying two practical papers and one theory paper in their chosen subject, they will now study computer technology in addition to just one theory paper and one practical paper.

The vocational stream offers students a choice of 12 subjects to specialise in and this includes general machinist, textile technology, food management, and nursing.

“Learning computer technology will mean that students in the vocational stream will have an advantage of picking up additional employability skills. Irrespective of what subjects they have chosen to specialise in, being equipped with the basic knowledge of operating computers will help them,” said S.N. Janardhanan, state general secretary, Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers Kazhagam.

Airtel ties up with Rajini-starrer Kaala

With just over two weeks to go for the release of Rajinikanth-starrer Kaala , Airtel has announced an association with the movie, in which users of the Airtel TV App will get to access content, including behind-the-scenes footage as well as the audio launch of the film.

Launching the ‘Meet Kaala Semma Coola’ contest on the Airtel TV App and the Kaala- branded prepaid packs, Manoj Murali, hub CEO, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, said they had similar tie-ups with the actor’s previous films as well and were looking forward to giving his fans exclusive access to content and to celebrate the film. The movie will release on June 7. Produced by actor Dhanush’s Wunderbar studios, the movie also stars Nana Patekar, Huma Quereshi and Anjali Patil, and has music by Santhosh Narayanan.

“Keeping with the general trend of Rajinikanth movies always seeing limited promotional activities, we will start promotions in full swing only after May 25,” said Mr Vinod. “The postponement, however, hasn’t affected us too much since a Rajinikanth film will always have a big draw.” he added. The makers are planning to release a second teaser by the end of this month. As part of the promotional activity, the movie has already been having tie-ups with a few brands now and more announcements are expected.

An egg a day can keep doc away

People who eat an egg just about every day may have a lower risk of heart attack and stroke than individuals who don’t eat eggs at all, a Chinese study suggests.

Researchers examined survey data on egg consumption among 461,213 adults, who were 51 years old on average. When they joined the study, none had a history of heart disease. Overall, they ate an average of half an egg daily; about 9% avoided eggs altogether while 13% ate roughly one egg every day.

At least half of the participants were followed for nine years or more. Compared to people who never ate eggs, individuals who ate an average of 0.76 eggs per day were 11% less likely to develop cardiovascular diseases and 18% less likely to die from these conditions, the study found.

“This is important to people, especially those in the part of the world where eggs are major sources of protein and other important nutrients for the body,” said Luc Djousse, a researcher at Harvard Medical School in Boston who wasn’t involved in the study.

Eggs are a primary source of dietary cholesterol, but they also contain high-quality lean protein and many vitamins, the study team notes in the journal Heart. REUTERS

Man files RTI petition to know his blood group after tests throw up different results

It was a plea with a difference that the central information commission heard while adjudicating a case by a man wanting to know his blood group. The RTI application was filed after tests threw up different results about the appellant’s blood type.

The RTI was to the medical council of India (MCI). The plea included reports of tests conducted at different government hospitals and private labs which gave “completely different results” of Rahul Chitra’s blood group. Some tests revealed his RH factor was positive, while it was found negative in others, said the RTI application filed by an associate of Chitra.

Rhesus (Rh) factor is an inherited protein found on the surface of red blood cells. If a person’s blood has the protein, his/her Rh factor is positive, and if not, it’s Rh is negative. Rh positive is the most common blood type. Once the MCI rejected the application, Chitra along with the RTI applicant approached the commission, where Chitra said that he had undergone blood tests at four different pathological labs in Agra and at the district hospital. The tests showed he has two blood types: B positive, B negative.

He said a test conducted at the Pant Hospital in Delhi showed his blood group was B positive. “If, during an emergency, I require blood transfusion, which blood group would be given to me,” questioned Chitra during the hearing before information commissioner Yashovardhan Azad.

The information commissioner noted that the issue raised by the applicant was “serious in nature and pertains to Chitra's life”. “There is no clarity on Rahul Chitra’s blood group. It’s a serious question as to which blood group should be given to him in case of an emergency. It becomes even more important as information sought is linked to his Right to Life,” Azad said.

Azad rejected the MCI’s contention that the question does not come under the definition of “information” which can be sought under the RTI Act and asked the CPIO to transfer the application to director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

“The Commission has concluded that AIIMS can do proper inquiry and inform the applicant,” Azad added.
