Banker booked for asking farmer’s wife for sex to clear loan

Taking serious note of an incident of a banker allegedly asking sexual favours from a woman to clear a crop loan, the Buldhana district authorities have formed a team to nab the accused, state government officials said on Saturday.

Rajesh Hivase, bank manager with the Central Bank of India in Buldhana, along with a peon, Manoj Chavan, was booked on Thursday after a woman, who had applied for a crop loan with the bank at Datala village, filed a complaint.

The incident happened on June 18 and the complaint was filed on Thursday, officials said. A statement by the government said that Buldhana collector Nirupama Dange would personally monitor the case.

“As soon as the incident came to light, the collector spoke to the superintendent of police and sought immediate arrest of the accused,” the statement said.

Peon Manoj Chavan, 37 was arrested on Saturday from Daryapur village, Girish Bobade, DSP, Buldhana said. He added thatpolice teams had been sent to the accused’s Wardha and Nagpur residences.

Earlier, senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan condemned the incident and said

“Farmers are not getting loan waiver or crop insurance and cannot even avail crop loans. The incident of a branch manager seeking sexual favours from a farmer’s wife in lieu of processing a loan is shocking and condemnable.”

According to the police, Hivase had taken the contact details of the complainant, when she had visited the bank along with her husband, and then called her later that day demanding sexual favours in return for processing the loan application.

Later, police said, Hivase sent peon Chavan to the woman’s house to get her to agree to his demands. PTI

Now, pay more for excess baggage on domestic flights

Carrying over 15 kg check-in baggage on domestic flights will now cost more. Private airlines have hiked both pre-booking charges for excess baggage as well as the fees that needs to be paid at airports by those who have not booked the same in advance by one-third or 33%.

Air India is the only airline that allows domestic economy flyers to take up to 25 kg checkin baggage free of charge.

Low cost carriers (LCC) IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir will now charge ₹400 per kg instead of the ₹300 earlier beyond the allowed 15 kg from domestic passengers at airports who have not pre-booked excess baggage. Air India had earlier this month raised excess baggage charges from ₹400 per kg to ₹500. On Saturday night, Jet Airways also hiked excess baggage fee to ₹500 per kg.

Jet, which from July15 will move to piece concept where the allowed 15 kg will need to be taken in one bag by domestic economy flyers, said the charge for taking a second bag (weighing up to 15 kg) on flights within India will be ₹3,999 from that date.

Till last August, airlines could charge only ₹500 for the first five kg beyond the 15-kg limit for domestic flyers due to a DGCA order. Beyond 20 kg, they could charge any amount. Airlines challenged that DGCA order in courts and were allowed to set excess baggage charges beyond 15 kg itself.



Ban on powder weighing more than 350g in hand bags on flights to US

New Delhi: From next Saturday passengers flying to the US may not be allowed to carry over 350 grams of powdery substance in hand bags. The US transportation security administration (TSA) has enacted this rule after a foiled attempt to put an improvised explosive device using powder explosives on a Gulf carrier in Australia last year. TSA says “powder-like substances greater than 12 ounce/350 ml must be placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening. ...We encourage you to place non-essential powders greater than 12 ounce in checked bags.” TNN

Across Maharashtra’s once prosperous milk belt, many dairy farmers face this stinging reality: the milk they sell is cheaper than water.

Some get ₹23 per litre of cow’s milk, mainly in the milk hub of Kolhapur. But most earn just ₹17-₹19. By comparison, bottled water sells at ₹20 per litre. Once the milk reaches consumers in cities, the price doubles to ₹40-44. But farmers do not get a share of the mark-up.

As the milk economy curdles, the sight of milk dumped on roads has become emblematic of farmer protests. A year ago they got up to ₹27 per litre of cow’s milk but prices fell by ₹4-₹10 eight months ago as a result of a surplus and a crash in international skimmed milk powder prices.

With several dairies cutting procurement rates by ₹2 from Thursday, the crisis is mounting.

Babasaheb Mane from Sangli’s Mahuli village was once a proud dairy farmer. He made ₹30,000 a month from his four cows last year. Today, he and his wife work as farm labourers to keep their home running.

Mane sells 40 litres of milk daily for ₹17 per litre. “I make ₹720 a day but spend ₹1,000 on the cows. I used to make a profit of ₹15,000 per month but now Imake a loss of ₹9,000,” he says. Farmers here are trapped between the fall in procurement rates and sharp increase in the costs of inputs, including fodder, oil-cakes and lactation pellets for cattle over the last year.

Maharashtra’s formal sector collects 115 lakh litres of milk daily. In June 2017, after the historic farmer strike, the state hiked the procurement price from ₹24 to ₹27 per litre. However, prices plummeted in just a few months. Since November, the state has had a surplus of 22 lakh litres per day. At the same time, international skimmed milk powder prices fell 30-40%. Unable to sell their milk powder stock, dairies faced losses and cut the price offered to farmers. Maharashtra currently has stocks of 29,000 tonnes of skimmed milk powder.

The bulk of the state’s dairy sector is private. Only 1% of the state’s milk is bought by the government and 39% by cooperative dairies mainly controlled by the Congress and NCP. As much as 60% is bought by private dairies.

The state admits it cannot control prices in a de-controlled sector dominated by private players. “When the Milk Control Order was in force till mid-2000, the state controlled licences to dairies. But now milk is an open commodity,” said state dairy development commissioner Rajeev Jadhav.
