Denied hall ticket, student hangs himself

BENGALURU: A 20-year-old student committed suicide by hanging himself at his JJ Nagar resdience, west Bengaluru, on Sunday night after his college allegedly denied him an exam hall ticket.

The deceased was Shreyas Nandan, a third-year bachelor of computer applications (BCA) student at a private college in north Bengaluru.

JJ Nagar Police said Nandan left a suicide note, where he said, “I was unable to submit some assignments as part of my internal examination and failed to get admission ticket for the examination due to shortage of attendance. I was asked to pay Rs 7,500 as fine for the attendance shortage in order to get a permit to write the examination. But I was not ready to pay fine and tried to convince my class teacher and college. I had genuine reasons for skipping classes. But, they were not ready to listen to me.”

Nandan, in the three-page death note, alleged that his biggest mistake in life was to join the college. He has also apologised to his grandmother and mother. “I am sorry. I have to leave. I am done. I give up,” police said, quoting the concluding sentence of the death note.

Police said his parents did not make any allegations against the college and said the institution had followed rules and regulations in Nandan’s case. Police have registered a case of unnatural death. Nandan’s body was handed over to the family after autopsy at Victoria Hospital on Monday.

Major error sends Mangaluru Mail down the wrong track

CHENNAI: Passengers travelling on the Chennai-Mangaluru Mail on Wednesday night had no idea it could have well been on the way to Vijayawada in the opposite direction, courtesy a serious signal and interlocking error between Chennai Central and Basin Bridge junction (BBQ).

That no such thing happened was thanks to loco pilot D Benstoy who noticed something amiss and stopped the train, moving at less than 30kmph, before Basin Bridge.

After the train (12601) left Central at 8.22pm, the home signal before Basin Bridge junction (home signal 2A) showed green, but the track point was set towards Korukkupet, instead of Vyasarpadi, a serious safety lapse,.

This is an important track point that is automatically operated. It ensures trains bound for Korukkupet-Gudur-Vijayawada are routed right and those bound for Vyasarpadi-Tiruvallur-Arakkonam routed left. “Routing the train to the wrong track could have been disastrous as it could have collided with another train on that track. The loco pilot even had the green signal to proceed,” said a source.

A senior official said that the wrong inter-locking happened due to faulty wiring after a recent maintenance session. An inquiry has been ordered and will look into the reasons for the lapse, which based on preliminary investigations is attributed to the Signal and Telecom (SnT) department.

Around 8.20pm, sources said, the BBQ cabin official began the process of ensuring track point 50 was cleared towards the Vyasarpadi side. The point, sources added, was not responding to the normal position and was towards Korukkupet side. The train was stopped by the loco-pilot despite the green signal as he sensed something amiss.

Sources said a failure was notified, but around 8.40pm when the signal 2A was once again cleared, point 50 was towards the Korukkupet side yet again. It was later restored around 8.45pm, sources said. The train passed Basin Bridge junction at 8.45pm.

When contacted, Chennai Divisional Railway Manager Naveen Gulati told TOI that action had been initiated with regard to the lapse. This is not the first time such an incident has happened. Around a year ago, a ‘fast’ EMU (suburban service) bound for Tiruttani was routed towards the Gummidipoondi section by the BBQ station master. After this, the Chennai division cancelled operation of fast locals on the route, and moved them to the slow line.

கடந்த, 2000, பிப்., 2ல் பிளசன்ட் ஸ்டே ஓட்டல் வழக்கில், அப்போதைய முதல்வர் ஜெயலலிதாவுக்கு சிறப்பு நீதிமன்றம், ஓராண்டு சிறை தண்டனை விதித்தது. இதற்கு, எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து, தர்மபுரி அருகே, இலக்கியம்பட்டியில், கோவை, தமிழ்நாடு வேளாண்மை பல்கலையைச் சேர்ந்த மாணவ - மாணவியர் வந்த பஸ் மீது, அ.தி.மு.க.,வினர் பெட்ரோல் குண்டு வீசினர்.

மேல்முறையீட்டுக்குப்பின், 2016ல், மூவருக்கும், ஆயுள் தண்டனையாக, உச்சநீதிமன்றம் குறைத்தது. இவர்கள், வேலுார் மத்திய ஆண்கள் சிறையில், 17 ஆண்டுகளாக தண்டனை அனுபவித்து வந்தனர்.

Wife of deceased Assistant moves HC

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has allowed a petition filed by a woman who sought appointment on compassionate ground following the death of her husband.

The court was hearing the case of a woman from Ramanathapuram, whose husband was working as an Assistant at the office of the Block Development Officer in Nainarkovil in the district at the time of his death.

However, the mother of the deceased also approached the court seeking direction to deny appointment to her daughter-in-law on compassionate ground claiming that all had not been well between the couple and a suit concerning them was pending before the Family Court in Ramanathapuram. The mother of the deceased accused her daughter-in-law for the death of her son and wanted the girl child born out of wedlock of the couple to be considered for appointment on compassionate ground once she attained majority.

Justice S. Vaidyanathan observed that the court did not want to get into the allegations made by the parties and such conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were perennial. The purpose of compassionate appointment was to ensure that there was an immediate redressal to the family in distress. The contention of the mother-in-law that the daughter-in-law should not be considered for the appointment and instead the job should be reserved for her three-year-old grandchild could not be accepted, the court said.

The government could not be allowed to keep one post vacant or reserved for 15 years. However, if the woman was considered and found to be eligible for the post, she should pay 25% of her salary after tax deduction to her mother-in-law. In case the woman decided to remarry, then the amount payable to her mother-in-law should increase to 32.33%, the court said.

The court also directed the government to consider monetary benefits to such parents who would not be eligible to take up jobs.

Anna University examinations to begin on Thursday

The semester examinations of Anna Univeristy will be conducted from November 22 for all institutions, the university officials have announced. The examinations scheduled for the affiliated colleges on November 20 were postponed.

The postponed exams will be held on December 17. However, the exams scheduled for College of Engineering, Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology, Madras Institute of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning will be held as scheduled, the Controller of Examinations said.

The Directorate of Technical Education has announced that the exams for all polytechnical colleges scheduled for November 20 will be held on November 28
