சிட்னி: ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் மிகப் பெரிய நகரமான சிட்னியில், நேற்று ஒரே நாளில், ஒரு மாதத்தில் பெய்ய வேண்டியதை விட, அதிகமாக மழை கொட்டி தீர்த்தது. இதையடுத்து, வெள்ளத்தில் சிட்னி தத்தளிக்கிறது.
பசிபிக் கடலில் அமைந்துள்ள தீவு நாடான ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில், மிகப் பெரிய நகரமாக, சிட்னி உள்ளது. இந்த நகரில், நேற்று காலை துவங்கிய கனமழை, இடைவிடாமல் கொட்டி தீர்த்தது. இடி, மின்னல், காற்றுடன் மழை பெய்ததால், மக்களின் இயல்பு வாழ்க்கை ஸ்தம்பித்துள்ளது. கன மழையால், சிட்னி நகர சாலைகளில், வெள்ளம் பெருக்கெடுத்து ஓடுகிறது. சாலையின் ஓரத்தில் நிறுத்தப்பட்டிருந்த கார்கள், இருசக்கர வாகனங்கள், வெள்ளத்தில் அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டன. 

சிட்னியில், நவம்பர் மாதத்தில், 84 மி.மீ., மழை பெய்வது வழக்கம், ஆனால், சிட்னியில், நேற்று ஒரே நாளில், 106 மி.மீ., மழை பெய்துள்ளது. சிட்னி நகரில், ரயில்கள் ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டன. விமான நிலையத்தின் ஓடுபாதையில் நீர் சூழ்ந்ததால், பல விமானங்கள் ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டன. சில விமானங்கள், வேறு நகரங்களுக்குத் திருப்பிவிடப்பட்டன. 'அடுத்த இரண்டு நாட்களுக்கு, கன மழை தொடரும்' என, வானிலை ஆய்வு மையம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது

சென்னையை அடுத்த பழவந்தாங்கல் பகுதியை சேர்ந்தவர் பழனிசாமி. இவரது சொந்த ஊர் நாமக்கல் மாவட்டம் வெண்ணந்தூர். அங்கு மளிகை கடை நடத்தி வந்தார். அதில் நஷ்டம் ஏற்பட்டதால் கடந்த 2 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு சென்னைக்கு குடும்பத்துடன் வந்து தங்கினார். இவரது மனைவி வனிதா, இவர்களுக்கு கிருபா, கவுசல்யா, கவுரி என 3 மகள்கள் உள்ளனர்.

இதில் கிருபா சிறு வயதில் இருந்தே டாக்டருக்கு படிக்க வேண்டும் என ஆசைப்பட்டார். இவர் பிளஸ்-2 தேர்வில் 980 மதிப்பெண்கள் மட்டுமே பெற்றதால் மருத்துவக்கல்லூரியில் இடம் கிடைக்கவில்லை.

பின்னர் புனேவில் ஒரு வருடம் படித்து அங்கிருந்து பிலிப்பைன்ஸ் நாட்டில் உள்ள மருத்துவக்கல்லூரியில் சேர்ந்து மருத்துவம் படித்து வந்தார். அங்கு முதலாம் ஆண்டு படிக்க மட்டுமே ரூ.5 லட்சம் வரை செலவு செய்துள்ளனர்.

ஆனால் மேற்கொண்டு கட்டணம் செலுத்த முடியாத சூழ்நிலை ஏற்பட்டதால் கிருபா தனது படிப்பை பாதியில் நிறுத்தி விட்டு சென்னை வந்து விட்டார். தற்போது பழனிசாமி வீதிவீதியாக சென்று டீ விற்று வருகிறார். இந்த நிலையில் டாக்டர் படிப்பை பாதியில் விட்ட கிருபா, பழவந்தாங்கல் பகுதியில் தள்ளுவண்டியில் பெற்றோருடன் சேர்ந்து டிபன் கடை நடத்தி வருகிறார்.

இதுகுறித்து கிருபா நிருபர்களிடம் கூறுகையில், ‘டாக்டருக்கு படிக்க ஆசை இருந்தாலும் மேற்கொண்டு பணம் கட்ட முடியாததால் பெற்றோருடன் தள்ளுவண்டியில் டிபன் கடை நடத்துகிறேன். மேற்கொண்டு படிக்க ஆசையாக இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் பணம் இல்லை. ஒரு நாள் என் ஆசை நிறைவேறும்’ என்று கூறினார்.

சென்னை சென்டிரல் ரெயில் நிலையத்தில் கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகளாக ஏராளமான வடஇந்திய இளைஞர்கள் கையில் ஒரு பையுடன் ரெயில்களிலிருந்து இறங்கி வெளியே வருவதை பார்க்கமுடிகிறது. இந்தநிலை இன்றும் தொடர்கிறது. ஆரம்பகாலங்களில் சென்னையில் மட்டும் கட்டிட வேலைபார்த்த இவர்கள், இப்போது தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் கட்டிடவேலைகள், கிரானைட், மொசைக் பதிக்கும் பணிகள், தச்சு வேலைகள், மின்சார வேலைகள், ஓட்டல் உள்பட பல வணிக நிறுவனங்களில் வேலைகள், செக்யூரிட்டி பணி என்று எல்லா வேலைகளிலும் கால்பதித்துவிட்டார்கள்.

இவ்வளவு வடஇந்தியர்கள் தமிழ்நாட்டில் வேலைபார்க்கிறார்களே, தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள அனைவருக்கும் வேலைவாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டதுவிட்டதா? என்று பார்த்தால் நிச்சயமாக இல்லை. கிராமங்களில் முன்பெல்லாம் எல்லோரும் மிகவும் சுறுசுறுப்பாக தன் கையே தனக்கு உதவி, சொந்தக்காலில் நிற்பதுதான் பெருமை என்றநிலையில் வேலைபார்த்து வந்தார்கள். ஆனால் இப்போது வேலைக்கு வருகிறீர்களா என்று கேட்டால், ஏன் வேலைக்கு வரவேண்டும்?. அரசு கொடுத்த இலவசவீட்டில் அமர்ந்துகொண்டு, இலவச வேட்டியை அணிந்துகொண்டு. அரசு மாதந்தோறும் கொடுக்கும் 20 கிலோ அரிசியை வைத்து, இலவச கிரைண்டர், இலவச மிக்சி மூலம் சமையல்செய்து, இலவசமாக கொடுத்த மின்விசிறியை ஓடவிட்டு, இலவசமாக கொடுத்த டெலிவி‌ஷனை பார்த்து பொழுதுபோக்கிக்கொள்ளலாமே, இதற்குமேல் வேலைவேண்டும் என்றால் 100 நாள் வேலைவாய்ப்புத்திட்டத்தில் போய் கொஞ்சம்நேரம் வேலைபார்த்தால் போதும், கைநிறைய சம்பளம் கிடைத்துவிடுகிறது. ஏன் உடலை வருத்தி வேலை செய்யவேண்டும்? என்ற உணர்வு பலரிடம் இருக்கிறது.

தமிழக அரசின் இந்த ஆண்டு பட்ஜெட்டில் அரசின் மொத்த வருவாய் ரூ.1 லட்சத்து 76 ஆயிரத்து 251 கோடியாகும். இதில், மானியங்கள் மற்றும் உதவித்தொகைகளுக்காக மட்டும் ரூ.75 ஆயிரத்து 723 கோடி போய்விடுகிறது. நியாயவிலை கடைகளில் 1 கோடியே 83 லட்சம் ரே‌ஷன் கார்டுகளுக்கு மாதம் 20 கிலோ இலவச அரிசி கொடுப்பதற்காகவும் மற்றும் சர்க்கரை, மண்எண்ணெய், துவரம் பருப்பு, சமையல் எண்ணெய் ஆகியவற்றை மானியவிலையில் கொடுப்பதற்காகவும் ரூ.6 ஆயிரம் கோடி இந்த ஆண்டு ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த நிலையில், சென்னை ஐகோர்ட்டில் நீதிபதி என்.கிருபாகரன் ஒரு வழக்கில், இலவசங்கள் மக்களை சோம்பேறியாக்கிவிடுகிறது. அரிசி மற்றும் உணவு பொருட்களை தேவையான ஏழை மக்களுக்கு கொடுப்பதில் தவறில்லை. ஆனால் வசதி படைத்தவர்களுக்கும் பொதுமக்களின் வரிப்பணத்திலிருந்து இலவச அரிசி கொடுப்பது சரியல்ல, இலவச அரிசிக்கு மட்டும் கடந்த ஆண்டு ரூ.2,110 கோடி செலவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. வறுமைக்கோட்டிற்கு கீழ் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு மட்டும் இலவசஅரிசி கொடுக்கவேண்டும் என்ற கருத்தை மிக துணிச்சலாக தெரிவித்துவிட்டார். பொதுமக்களில் பலர் சோம்பேறியாகிவிட்ட காரணத்தினால், சாதாரண வேலைகளுக்குகூட வடமாநிலங்களில் இருந்து வேலையாட்கள் தருவிக்க வேண்டியதிருக்கிறது என்ற கருத்தை அவர் தலைமையிலான பெஞ்சு பட்டவர்த்தனமாக கூறியிருக்கிறது. வறுமைக்கோட்டிற்கு கீழே உள்ள ஏழைகளுக்கு மட்டும் இலவச அரிசி கொடுக்க அரசு தயாராக இருக்கிறதா? என்பதை நாளை (30–ந்தேதி) தெரிவிக்க கோர்ட்டு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது. இது உண்மையிலேயே வரவேற்க வேண்டிய ஒரு கருத்தாகும். ஏழைகளுக்கு மட்டும் இலவசங்களை கண்டிப்பாக கொடுக்கவேண்டும். ஆனால், எல்லோருக்கும் இலவசங்கள் கொடுக்கவேண்டுமா? என்பதை அரசு பரிசீலிக்க வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் வந்துவிட்டது.

Chennai: Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Chennai, directed Metropolitan Transport Corporation to pay a compensation of Rs 39.28 lakh to family members of a 35-year old data entry operator, who died in an accident caused by an MTC bus five years ago.

In the petition, S. Kasthuri submitted that her husband E. Sudharsan Prabhu, 35, was employed as data entry operator in Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine and received a salary of Rs 12,000 per month. In addition to this, he was also doing part time catering and earning Rs 10,000 per month.

On November 28, 2013, at about 7.20 pm he was riding pillion on a bike from Kilpauk to Chintadripet. An MTC bus, which was driven in a rash and negligent manner, dashed against the motorcycle. As a result both rider and pillion rider sustained serious injuries.

Sudharsan Prabhu was admitted to Government general hospital, Chennai, and shifted to private hospital and underwent some risky surgical procedures. Later, he was shifted to GH, where he succumbed to injuries.

She said the family members lost breadwinner and hence sought direction to the MD. MTC, to pay a compensation of Rs 51 lakh to her family members.

In its reply, the MD, MTC said the MTC bus driver was obeying traffic rules. The accident took place due to the negligence of bike rider. The bus was on its trip from Anna Square to Koyambedu. When the vehicle reached Ulagappa street and Arunachalam street junction, the two wheeler came from the Ulagappa street in a rash and negligent manner and crossed the junction without seeing the traffic including the bus. The rider lost control and two-wheeler dashed against the front bumper of the bus and as a result duo sustained injuries. Hence the MTC was not liable to pay any compensation to the petitioners.

The judge, Small Causes Court III, S. Umamaheswari, said considering oral and documentary evidence the tribunal holds that the accident took place due to rash and negligent driving of the bus driver. The judge directed the MD to pay a compensation of Rs.39,28,000. to the family members of the deceased with interest of 7.5 per cent per annum.

108 students can be taken only in private colleges: Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The state government on Wednesday informed the Madras high court that since the government medical colleges are overloaded, all the second year students of defunct Ponniah Ramajayam Medical Sciences in Manamai Nallar in Kancheepuram district, could be accommodated only in 10 self financing medical colleges.

Additional advocate general Narmada Sampath made this submissions when a batch of petitions from SU Archana and 107 other students came up for hearing before Justice T. Raja.

Earlier, senior counsel Silambannan appearing for the students submitted that all the 108 students have to be accommodated only in government medical colleges since there is an apprehension that some of the self financing medical colleges may also face the same problem like Ponniah medical college in future and the students will be in trouble. Moreover, if all the students are to be accommodated in self financing medical colleges, then the approval of the MCI is necessary, he added.

AAG Narmada Sampath said, since 144 students from another defunct Annai Medical college were already accommodated in government medical colleges, the government medical colleges were overloaded and it was not possible to accommodate the present 108 students in government medical colleges.

The state government has addressed to the Board of Governors/MCI to accord approval for accommodating the 108 students in self financing medical colleges. The BoGs/MCI had also approved it. Ten self financing medical colleges have expressed their willingness to accommodate the students, she added.

V.P. Raman, counsel for MCI, submitted that the petitioners cannot apprehend that some of the self financing medical colleges may face problem in future and they will be in trouble. Of the ten10 colleges, eight have been granted permanent approval and the inspection in those colleges will be done once in five years only. Madha and Annapoorna medical colleges have not been granted permanent approval, he added.

Following this, the judge directed AAG Narmada Sampath to get instruction as to whether the 20 students who were supposed to be transferred to Madha and Annapoorna medical colleges could be accommodated in other self financing medical colleges or at least 10 students could be accommodated in other colleges.

Don’t transfer Nilgiris collector now: Supreme Court to govt

This is possibly the first time in history that the apex court has given such a direction in matters related to the Nilgiris.

Ooty: With the Supreme Court passing orders on a public interest litigation (PIL) on the Segur Valley Elephant Corridor at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) buffer zone, it has given directives to the Tamil Nadu government not to transfer the Collector of the Nilgiris, J. Innocent Divya, until further orders.

This is possibly the first time in history that the apex court has given such a direction in matters related to the Nilgiris. It is also a fact that Divya's exemplary performance, her honesty and integrity in dealing with the elephant corridor issue has come in for recognition.

Divya was courageous earlier in taking steps to disband the 140-year-old Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association, as this association proved to be a lame duck organisation in recent years. Her commitment came to the fore in August when she took steps to collect clear data on unauthorised tourist resorts in the Segur Valley Elephant Corridor and closed down 38 such resorts which were found to be running 400 suites/rooms, as per the apex court orders.

Last week, she took steps to remove fences around the closed resorts. While the apex court verdict is still awaited on another 400 other constructions in the corridor including those of some bigwigs, the present directive from the apex court is expected to pave the way for Divya to take an iron hand on corrective actions to remove encroachments in the corridor. Elephant G. Rajendran, Chennai-based advocate-cum-environmentalist, and the petitioner in this PIL on the elephant corridor, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, said that he had raised the issue at court on Wednesday, as he was given to understand that some persons were working behind the screen to transfer Divya."I informed the court that Divya had acted in an honest way and her role as Collector is vital till the final orders on the Segur Valley Elephant Corridor are pronounced. The court accepted my plea and passed directions in this regard," he noted.

Chennai: A Government higher secondary school teacher in Iyyangarkulam in Kancheepuram district was beaten up ruthlessly by a class 10 student on Wednesday evening.

Hena Jean, the English teacher of the school, was slapped and kicked by a 15-year-old boy inside the classroom.

Student sources said, at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday when the English teacher was teaching a class 10 class, a 15-year-old boy allegedly went outside the classroom. The teacher caught the boy and made him sit in his place and did not allow him outside. Irked by this the boy twisted the teacher’s hand and pushed her down.

Hena said, “Even after pushing me down he did not stop, he continued kicking me.” After a few minutes, other teachers took Hena to the Kancheepuram government hospital for treatment. On information, Kancheepuram district chief educational officer, Angelo Irudhaiyaswamy rushed to the spot and held talk with the teachers. He said the discipline committee of the school will probe the issue and also ordered to submit a report on Saturday.

However, the teachers said despite filing several petitions to the chief educational officer and district educational officer, no actions were taken on roguish students. The headmaster of the school also has to be transferred, as he never responds to the complaint given against such students.

It may be noted that on November 8, the Iyyangarkulam villagers had filed a petition stating the dismissal of 22 students from this government school as they were involved in mischievous activities like damaging schools property, bursting crackers inside the school premises and ragging the junior students. Earlier in August, the students of this school were held for possessing ganja.
