TN to launch gold ring scheme on Sept 28

Chennai: Chief minister C Joseph Vijay will launch the ‘Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram’ scheme on Sept 28, making every child born in a govt hospital from June 22, 2026, eligible to receive a 1g gold ring. The CM chaired a review meeting at the secretariat on Friday to discuss the launch and implementation of the scheme.
The govt order for the scheme was issued on June 23, a day after Vijay’s birthday. The benefit will be available to children whose mothers are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu and are registered in the pregnancy and infant cohort monitoring and evaluation (PICME) system with a reproductive and child health (RCH) identity number.
Each ring, carrying a unique serial number, will be supplied in tamper-proof packaging. The state has procured an initial 1.28 lakh rings for the scheme,said govt in a release For children born between June 22 and Sept 27, 100 rings a day will be distributed from Sept 28 through 107 hubs. For children born from Sep 28, the ring will be provided when the mother and child leave the hospital. tnn
