The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) plans to grant permanent affiliation to its colleges if they are found to have good infrastructure and teaching facilities.
Around 650 medical, dental, nursing, ayurveda, homeopathy, unani pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other allied health sciences colleges are affiliated to the university. At present, the local assessment committees visit each college every year and recommend to the university to grant or reject affiliation.
Criteria
S. Sacchidananda, Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS, said the university had proposed that colleges, which fulfil certain criteria, will be granted permanent affiliation. “We are currently mulling over the idea of providing affiliation to such colleges either once in three or five years. The final decision will be taken at the upcoming syndicate meeting,” he said.
The university will, however, reserve the right to conduct surprise inspections when it deems necessary. The university statutes have a provision to grant permanent affiliation, but it has not been done by the university so far.
Dr. Sacchidananda said that granting permanent affiliation would help both the college managements as well as the university. “There are many colleges that are par excellence and there is no need to inspect them every year. We will save on our resources and our staff can devote time to scrutinising colleges that are not up to the mark,” he said. He also added that the college managements can pay the fees and submit all relevant documents once every few years once this is approved. He said that once a few colleges get permanent affiliation, other colleges would also strive to get the same, which would improve the quality of colleges as there are higher standards required to get this tag.
The move has been welcomed by college managements. “The documentation to get affiliation is very laborious and time consuming. The university should strive to ensure that the assessment is simplified and transparent so that it would reduce red tape in the process,” the principal of a private medical college in Bengaluru said.
