Chennai : A third-year MBBS student in Tamil Nadu, arrested by the CBI for his involvement in the NEET 2024 scam, was suspended by the govt Tiruvarur Medical College, health department officials said.

Amit Kumar, a native of Saharsa in Bihar, was arrested by the CBI for solving the stolen NEET UG 2024 question paper at Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. Based on a complaint dated June 23, 2024, Amit Kumar was taken into custody on August 19, 2024, and lodged in Patna central jail. A charge sheet was filed against him.

On April 15, the undergraduate medical education board director, Sukh Lal Meena, directed Tiruvarur dean Dr G Joseph Raj to suspend Amit Kumar with immediate effect, pending the final outcome of the ongoing proceedings, and to send a compliance report in three days.

The CBI is investigating cases connected to the NEET UG 2024 examinations wherein some of the MBBS students were found involved in malpractices, it said. The letter added that a charge sheet was filed against Amit Kumar, who was “found involved in solving the stolen NEET UG 2024 question paper,” it said. He added that the action taken report sought from the university concerned regarding the said student was still awaited. The same day, the college placed Amit Kumar under suspension. However, sources from the college said the student wasn’t attending college since July 22, 2024. Four months later, in Nov 2024, the college declared him ineligible to write his university examination due to inadequate attendance and lack of internal assessment marks.

In Dec, based on provisional bail granted by the Patna high court to write the examination in Jan 2025, his parents, Meena Kumari and Ram Prasad Yadav, sought permission from the dean for their son to write the examination. Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, however, denied permission.
