Start-up aims at replicating the most successful business model

Even in today’s age, when a couple of taps on the phone are all you need to get food at your doorstep, the ‘dabbawalas’ of Mumbai remain legends. The enormously successful business model, marked by highly efficient food delivery to thousands via cycles and suburban trains, has not only been studied by management students, but is also a cultural phenomenon with books and at least one famous recent movie focussing on it.

Chennai Dabbawala as it is called has been launched in the first week of October by L. Deva. Having nil knowledge about the working of the Dabbawalas of Mumbai, Mr. Deva who is the proprietor of Chennai Dabbawala, does not find it a shortcoming in launching the food box delivery in the city.

The Computer Science graduate having had a hand in courier service in Guindy finds food delivery an extension of it. He said Chennai Dabbawala has been launched with the motto: ‘Delivered on time, each time’.

At present the business is being promoted through social media such as Facebook (@ChennaiDabbawala) and word of mouth of their courier clients. Mr. Deva said: “Already we have a number of clients particularly north Indians who prefer home-cooked food being delivered fresh and fast.”

Mr. Deva said the lunch box delivery rate for the first three km is Rs. 600, for three to six km Rs. 700 and for six to nine km Rs. 900.

From cab to food

Uber, the taxi-aggregator, has entered the bandwagon of food delivery by launching UberEATS. The mobile app of food delivery service was launched in the city on Friday.

UberEATS has partnered with more than 200 restaurants in the city including A2B, Aasife Biryani, Cream Store and Fruit Shop on Greams Road.

Bhavik Rathod, Head of UberEATS India, said the food delivery app UberEATS has been launched in the city within five months of commencing the food delivery operations in the country.

To tap the festive season, UberEast has started FestiveEATS where customers could order their foods on the UberEATS app at exclusive offers with an introductory delivery fee being Rs. 1. The FestiveEATS service would be open from October 14.

Nathella Jewellery shuts shop due to financial crunch

Dues of customers will be settled through sale of ancestral property, says its managing director Prappana Kumar

The closure of 7 branches of Nathella Jewellery across the State has sent shock waves among the customers. Many of them have been gathering outside the shops seeking repayment of their deposits for a few days now.

However, the management has clarified that steps are being taken to clear the dues. Two days ago, some customers had lodged a complaint against the Tambaram branch for defrauding them of their deposits against gold saving schemes. Though monthly instalments were paid, they could not purchase jewellery.

Customers note that they had been having an issue regarding sale of gold ornaments at the store a few months ago.

S. Mahalakshmi , a resident of West Mambalam, tried to convert the gold bought at Nathella into cash for her personal needs. “When I approached their T.Nagar branch they said they can give a cheque after two months due to cash crunch. Since it was an emergency I had to sell gold to a local pawn dealer at a lesser rate,” she said. Employees have been deployed at the stores to answer queries of customers. Posters have also been put up at the stores on the financial crunch and assuring customers that cash would be repaid. According to the management of the 77-year-old brand, various factors, including business loss, led to the financial crunch. There are plans to reopen the branches — five in Chennai and one each in Vellore and Hosur — in a few days. Prasanna Kumar, Director of Nathella, said, “We are going through a tough time and our first priority is to help our customers. We just need some time.”

N. Prappana Kumar, Managing director of Nathella Jewellery, said, “We are selling our ancestral property to settle customers dues, particularly those who invested in the gold saving schemes. We are also planning to reach out through mails. We hope to settle dues in a couple of weeks."

Nurses recruited by board threaten to go on strike

Complain of appointment on contract basis, posting in far-off places

Nurses appointed through the Medical Recruitment Board have threatened to go on strike if they are not invited for talks, claiming that several representations to various government officials were not considered, they said.

Around 11,000 nurses were recruited by the MRB after a competitive test in 2015 on contract for a salary of Rs. 7,700. According to the association 90% of the nurses have been posted in locations hundreds of kilometers away from their residence.

“I live in Villupuram,but I have been posted in Nagecoil. Nurses from Kanniyamari have been posted in Tiruvannamalai. Not only has our salary not been revised, we have not heard about being included in the 7th Pay Commission,” said N. Arasumani, vice-president of the MRB Nurses Welfare Association.

“For the past two years no transfer counselling has been conducted though there are vacancies. It is tougher for nurses appointed to Primary Health Centres as there are no staff quarters and much of our salary goes in paying rents. Our children’s education is also affected,” Mr. Arasumani said.

‘Order violated’

The nurses point out that though the MRB had only advertised for 7,243 posts, it filled vacancies that existed then. “The government has violated its Order no. 191 released in 1962 that all those appointed through competitive exams should be made regular appointments,” he added.

The nurses also pointed out that the MRB had not been following the rule of appointment uniformly for all other healthcare personnel. It has used qualification and degree certificates for appointment as regular staff, Mr. Arasumani said.

Despite promising to call them for talks the health officials had not done so.

மேலும் திரையரங்குகளில் தேசிய கீதம் தொடர்ந்து இசைக்கப்பட வேண்டுமா, வேண்டாமா என்பதை அரசு முடிவு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். 

தமிழ்நாடு போக்குவரத்துக் கழகத்தை அரிக்கும் கரையான்கள்: சினிமாவையே மிஞ்சுகிறது

மதுரை: தமிழ்நாடு மாநிலப் போக்குவரத்துக் கழகம் சுமார் ரூ.35 ஆயிரம் கோடி அளவுக்குக் கடனில் மூழ்கியுள்ளது. அதே சமயம், வேலையே செய்யாமல் பல ஓட்டுநர்களும், நடத்துநர்களும் ஊதியம் பெற்று வருகின்றனர்.

சக்தி வாய்ந்த சங்கங்களில் இணைந்திருக்கும் ஓட்டுநர்களுக்கும், நடத்துநர்களுக்கும் ஊதியம் என்ற பெயரில் பல லட்சம் ரூபாயை மாதந்தோறும் தண்டம் அழுகிறது போக்குவரத்துக் கழகம்.

அதே சமயம், போக்குவரத்துத் துறையில் கடுமையாக உழைத்து, ஓய்வு பெற்ற பல ஊழியர்கள் தங்களது ஓய்வூதியப் பலன்களைப் பெறாமல் கடும் இன்னல்களுக்கு ஆளாகியுள்ளனர்.

தமிழ்நாடு மாநில போக்குவரத்துக் கழகத்தின் மதுரை மண்டலத்தில் மட்டும் மாதந்தோறும் இதுபோன்ற 180 ஓட்டுநர் மற்றும் நடத்துநர்களுக்கு என்று ரூ.60 லட்சம் அளவுக்கு ஊதியமாக வழங்கப்படுகிறது. இவர்கள் அனைவரும், மிகப்பெரிய சங்கத்தில் இணைந்திருப்பது மட்டுமே ஒரே காரணம். இவர்கள் பணி நேரத்தின் போது பணிமனையில் இல்லாமல் இருப்பது, வேலை செய்யாமல், சொந்த வேலைகள் செய்வதும், வியாபாரத்தில் ஈடுபடுவதும் கூட நடந்தேறுகிறது.

சரி நட்டம் என்றால் ஊதியத்தோடு போகிறதா என்றால் இல்லை. வேலையே செய்யாத இவர்களுக்கு ஆண்டுக்கு 4 செட் சீருடை. சீருடையை சலவை செய்ய ஆண்டுக்கு ரூ.20 ஆயிரம் அலவன்ஸ். 

இதில்லாமல், இவர்களால் மதுரை மண்டலத்துக்கு நாள் ஒன்றுக்கு ரூ.2.50 லட்சம் இழப்பு ஏற்படுகிறது. ஏன் தெரியுமா? இதுபோன்று இருந்தும் இல்லாமல் இருக்கும் ஊழியர்களால் போக்குவரத்தக் கழகத்தால் திட்டமிட்டபடி பேருந்து பயணத்தை மேற்கொள்ள முடியாமல் போகிறது. அதாவத, நாள்தோறும் சுமார் 10 ஆயிரம் கிலோ மீட்டர் பேருந்துப் பயணம் மேற்கொள்ளப்படாததால் இந்த நட்டம் ஏற்படுகிறது என்கிறார் அரசு போக்குவரத்து மதுரை தொழிலாளர் சங்கத்தின் பொதுச் செயலர் ஆர். வாசுதேவன்.

இந்த சங்கத்தின் துணைத் தலைவர் வி. பிட்சை, தகவல் அறியும் உரிமைச் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் தாக்கல் செய்த மனு மீது கிடைத்த தகவலில், விதிமுறைகளை மீறி, ஓட்டுநர்களுக்கும், நடத்துநர்களுக்கும் அலுவலக வேலைகள் ஒதுக்கப்படுவதால், பேருந்துகளை இயக்க போதுமான ஓட்டுநர், நடத்துநர் பற்றாக்குறை ஏற்படுவதும் தெரிய வந்துள்ளது.

அதிரடியாக நடத்திய சோதனையில், சில ஓட்டுநர்களும், நடத்துநர்களும் அன்று பணியில் உள்ளனர். ஆனால் பணிமனையில் இல்லை. சில நிபுணத்துவம் பெற்ற நபர்கள் செய்ய வேண்டிய அலுவலக வேலைகள், ஓட்டுநர்கள் மற்றும் நடத்துநர்கள் மூலம் செய்து முடிக்கப்படுகிறது.

உதாரணமாக, கணினிகளை பராமரிப்பது, புள்ளி விவரங்களை பதிவு செய்வது, தொழிலாளர் சட்டம், விபத்துகள், குற்றவியல் பதிவுகள், போன்ற விஷயங்கள் கூட அலுவலக வேலை என்று கூறி நடத்துநர்கள், ஓட்டுநர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

இது மட்டுமல்லாமல், சிலருக்கு வருவாய்த்துறை செயலர், கணினி ஆடிட்டிங், புள்ளிவிவரம் தொகுப்பது, கான்டீன் நிர்வாகம் மட்டுமல்லாமல் கண் பார்வை பரிசோதிப்பது போன்ற பணிகள் கூட ஒதுக்கப்படுகின்றன. 

சிலருக்கு, எந்த காரணமும் குறிப்பிடப்படாமலேயே ஆன் டியூட்டி என்றும் பதிவு செய்யப்படுகிறது. அலுவலக ஊழியர்கள், தொழிலாளர்களின் நலனுக்காக பணியாற்றும் போது ஆன் டியூட்டி என்று போட்டுக் கொள்ளும் வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால், அது தவறாகப் பயன்படுத்துப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

ஆன் டியூட்டி விஷயத்தில் பல விதிகள் மீறப்படுவதாகவும், விரைவில் அது குறித்து நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் வலியுறுத்தப்படுகிறது.

திருச்சி: திருச்சியில் தனியார் பள்ளி ஒன்று தங்கள் மாணவர்களில் தீபாவளி கொண்டாடியவர்களுக்கு தண்டனை அளித்தும், கொண்டாடாதவர்களுக்கு பாராட்டு கடிதம் கொடுத்தும் நடந்து கொண்ட விதம் கடும் சர்ச்சைக்குள்ளாகியுள்ளது.

திருச்சி பாலக்கரையில் தனியார் பள்ளி ஒன்று அமைந்துள்ளது. அந்த பள்ளியில் தீபாவளி விடுமுறை முடிந்து  திரும்பிய மாணவர்களிடம் யார் யார் தீபாவளியை பட்டாசு வெடித்து கொண்டாடினீர்கள் என்று கேட்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதற்கு கையை உயர்த்தி ஆமாம் என்று பதில் கூறிய மாணவர்களுக்கு தணடனை வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அத்துடன் பட்டாசு வெடித்த மாணவர்கள் பாவம் இழைத்து விட்டதாகக் கூறி, கடவுளிடம் மன்னிப்பு கேட்குமாறு அறிவுறுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

மேலும் கையில் மருதாணி வைத்துக் கொண்டு வந்திருந்த மாணவி ஒருவருக்கு அடி விழுந்துள்ளது. அதே சமயம் தாங்கள் தீபாவளி கொண்டாடவில்லை என்று கூறிய மாணவர்களுக்கு பாராட்டுக் கடிதம் வழங்கப்பட்டதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது.

தகவலைக் கேள்விப்பட்டு இன்று அப்பள்ளி முன் திரண்ட பெற்றோர்கள் பள்ளியின் வாயில் கதவை மூடி ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் நடத்தினார்கள். தகவல் கேள்விப்பட்டு அங்கு வந்த போலீசாரிடம் கூடியிருந்த பெற்றோர்கள் மாணவர்களுக்கு தண்டனை வழங்கிய பள்ளி தலைமை ஆசிரியர் மற்றும் உடற்கல்வி ஆசிரியர் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்குமாறு வலியுறுத்தினார்கள்.

பள்ளி நிர்வாகம் தரப்பில் தாங்கள் ஒளி மற்றும் காசு மாசினை குறைக்கும் வகையில் மாசு கட்டுப்பாட்டு வாரியம் வழங்கிய அறிவுரைகளை பின்பற்றியதாகத் தெரிவித்தனர். பின்னர் பெற்றோர் ஒருவரின் புகாரின் பேரில் பள்ளி தலைமை ஆசிரியர் மற்றும் உடற்கல்வி ஆசிரியர் மீது வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது        

இது தொடர்பாக மாநில பள்ளிக்கல்வித்துறை சார்பாக இன்று விசாரணை நடத்தப்பட்டது. விசாரணை அறிக்கை  மேலதிகாரிகளுக்கு அனுப்படும் என்று அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

தனிமனித ஒழுக்கத்தின் அடிப்படை ஒருவன் தனியாக இருக்கும் நிலையிலும், ஒழுக்கத்தைப் பேணுவதாகும். யாருமே பார்க்கவில்லையென்றாலும் தவறு செய்ய மாட்டேன் என்ற உறுதியுடன் ஒரு மனிதன் இருப்பது அவனின் பலத்தைக் காட்டுகிறது.
இப்படிப்பட்ட மனிதர்கள் சந்தர்ப்பம் கிடைத்தாலும், எந்நிலையிலும் தவறு செய்யாத பக்குவத்தையும், மன முதிர்ச்சியையும் கொண்டவர்கள். இப்படிப்பட்ட மனநிலையை, குழந்தைப் பருவத்திலேயே விதைப்பது பெறோர்கள் மற்றும் ஆசிரியர்களின் கையிலேயே உள்ளது.
இதற்கான பயிற்சியை அவர்களுக்கு அளிப்பது எளிதான காரியமில்லை என்றாலும், விடாமல் முயற்சி செய்தால் வெற்றி அடையலாம். முதலில் பெற்றோர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள் மற்றும் வீட்டில் உள்ள பெரியவர்கள், குழந்தைகள் பின்பற்றும் வகையில் நல்ல விதமாக நடக்க வேண்டும்.
குழந்தைப்பருவத்தில் வளரும் சூழ்நிலையும், பெரியவர்களின் வழிகாட்டுதல் இல்லாததுமே ஒழுக்கக் கேடான விஷயங்களில் அவர்கள் ஈடுபடுவதற்குக் காரணிகளாகும். தகவல் தொடர்பு சாதனங்களான தொலைக்காட்சி, கணினி மற்றும் கைப்பேசி போன்றவை பெரும்பாலும் தவறான விஷயங்களுக்காகவே பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன.
பெற்றோரின் கண்காணிப்பில், அளவோடு, பயனுள்ள தகவல்களுக்கு மட்டும் இவற்றை, குழந்தைகள் பயன்படுத்துவதும், இது விஷயத்தில் பெற்றோர்கள் கண்டிப்பு காட்டுவதும் குழந்தைகளின் எதிர்காலத்திற்கு நல்லது.
எல்லா நேரங்களிலும் பெற்றோர்கள் உடனிருப்பது சாத்தியமில்லாததால், அவர்கள் தனியாக இருக்கும் சந்தர்ப்பங்களிலும் பெற்றோர் தங்களுக்கு கற்றுத் தந்த ஒழுக்கத்தக் கடைப்பிடித்து வருவதற்கு அவர்களைத் தயார் செய்வது பெற்றோர்களின் கடமையாகும்.
பள்ளிகளில் நீதி போதனை வகுப்புகளில் மாணவர்களுக்கு ஆசிரியர்கள் கண்டிப்பாக சொல்லித் தரவேண்டிய பாடம் இது. வீட்டிலும் பெற்றோர்கள் குழந்தைகளுக்குத் தவறாமல் இதை சொல்லித் தருவதுடன் தாங்களும் அதனைக் கடைபிடிக்க வேண்டும்.
ஊருக்குதான் உபதேசம் எனக்கல்ல என்று மற்றவர்களுக்கு மட்டும் அறிவுரைகளை அள்ளி, அள்ளி வழங்கி விட்டு நாம் அதனைப் பின்பற்றவில்லையென்றால் அதனால் நமக்கும் சரி, அடுத்தவருக்கும் சரி, எந்தப் பயனும் ஏற்படப்போவதில்லை.

இதுவே தனியாக நீங்கள் மட்டும் படம் பார்க்கும்பொழுது ஆபாசக் காட்சிகள் வந்தால் உங்களில் எத்தனை பேர் உடனே வேறு ஒளிஅலைவரிசைக்கு மாற்றாமல் தொடர்ந்து அதனையே பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருப்பீர்கள் என்று கூட்டத்தினரைப் பார்த்து ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்டார். பல பேர் (நேர்மையாக) கை தூக்கினார்கள்.
இதில் இருந்து நாம் எடுத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய செய்தி, நாம் தனியாக இருக்கும் பொழுது தவறு செய்வது தவறில்லை என்ற மனிதர்களின் நிலைப்பாட்டினைத்தான்.
தனி மனித சுதந்திரம், உரிமை என்ற பெயரில் கல்லூரியில் படிக்கும் ஆண்களும் பெண்களும் மற்றவர்கள் பார்க்கிறார்கள் என்ற கூச்சமின்றி பொது இடங்களான பூங்காக்கள், கடற்கரை, சுற்றுலாத்தலங்கள் போன்ற பொழுது போக்கு இடங்களில் வரைமுறையின்றி நடக்கின்றனர்.
குழந்தைகளைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு இப்படிப்பட்ட இடங்களுக்கு வரும் பெற்றோர், குழந்தைகள் இவற்றைப் பார்க்காமல் இருப்பதற்கு பெரும் முயற்சி எடுக்க வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. இதனாலேயே வெளியிடங்களுக்கு, குழந்தைகளைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வருவதற்குத் தயக்கம் காட்டுகிறார்கள்.
இந்நிலையில் சமீபகாலமாக பள்ளிக் குழந்தைகள் கூட சீருடையில் பொது இடங்களில் அநாகரீமாக நடந்து கொள்வதைப் பார்க்கிறோம். இவர்கள் காதோடு கைப் பேசியில் மணிக்கணக்கில் பேசுவது நம் காதுகளில் விழாமல் இருப்பதே
நல்லது.
மனிதர்களின் கண்டுபிடிப்புகளான கைப்பேசி, முகநூல், கட்செவி போன்ற சாதனங்கள் மக்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் எளிதாகத் தொடர்பு கொள்வதற்காகவே கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டன.
ஆனால் அவற்றைத் தவறான விஷயங்களுக்காகவே சில மக்கள் பயன்படுத்தித் தங்களின் வாழ்க்கையோடு மற்றவர்களின் வாழ்வையும் சீரழித்துக் கொள்கின்றனர்.

Parents of medical aspirants have floated an online petition against a recent state government resolution requiring the aspirants to complete their bond service before seeking admission to post-graduation medical and dental courses.

Medical and dental graduates, post-graduates and super speciality students from government-run colleges are required to spend a year at a state-run rural health care centre after writing the final exam. The students who don’t do so must pay a fine of Rs15 lakh, Rs50 lakh and Rs2.5 crore, respectively.

The parents said that the decision, which comes two months before National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test - Post Graduation (NEET-PG), has put the aspirants in a spot. Despite their preparations, the exam has become inconsequential for those who are yet to complete their mandatory one-year service in rural areas.

So far, the petition has garnered over 1,700 signatures.

Many medical students who want to pursue post-graduation and super-speciality courses comply with the rural service for all the courses combined after finishing their academics. However, with the new GR in place, the students can no longer do so.

The change in norms is the latest in the state government’s efforts to enforce the bond, as many medical graduates manage to dodge the rural stint. However, various stakeholders have expressed reservations over these measures.

Muzaffar Khan, the parent who started the online petition, said that the move to make bond requirement mandatory for PG admissions at the eleventh hour is unjust to students. “Enforcing the rule on students facing exams without giving them sufficient notice is an injustice. Now they will have to start their preparations anew after their rural stint and end up losing a year or so,” he said.

Khan also suggested that the rule will result in students graduating from private medical and dental colleges getting most of the PG seats in government-run colleges, as they don’t have to sign the rural bond. “By restricting the government college graduates from PG admissions, the government is indirectly giving an edge to the graduates from private and deemed colleges. The government is also encouraging students to pursue graduation in private colleges and deemed universities which have very high fees, poor infrastructure and very few patients to avail clinical knowledge,” read the petition.

Salem: In a startling development, the Salem municipal corporation officials slapped a hefty fine amount of Rs 24.25 lakh on Sunday on various private institutions for serious public health violations following day-long inspection of dengue-control measures in the steel town.

The penalty targets included a hospital that turned a blind eye to snakes in its potable water tank and two private spinning mills for not keeping their premises clean and tidy.

The officials’ team led by commissioner R. Satheesh conducted surprise inspections at Shanmuga Hospital in Asthampatty and were shocked to find snakes creeping inside a water tank, which is used for supplying drinking water for patients.

Officials also found that the hospital administration had dumped bio-medical waste in its premises without following guidelines to dispose them safely and a nearby sewer had not been constructed with adequate safety measures to drain out waste water. Larvae of ‘aedes mosquitoes’, which cause dengue, were also found in the water stagnating in the dumped goods and water containers in the premises, sources told DC.

After taking note of all the irregularities and lack of mosquitoes control measures, the Salem corporation commissioner slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Shanmugha hospital administration. A similar inspection at Saraswathi Hospital in Asthampatty revealed even worse unhygienic surroundings.

Speaking about the anti-dengue drive, corporation commissioner R Satheesh said, “plastic buckets, water tanks, coconut shells and dumped tyres were found with larvae of dengue-causing mosquitoes. The (Saraswathi) hospital has been imposed a fine amount of ` four lakh for not maintaining cleanliness and for making its premises a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

The corporation officials, who inspected various places here, also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on a tea shop at Ramakrishna Nagar and Rs five lakh each on two private spinning mills at Kamarajar Colony and Thathampatt respectively. The total fine charged today on erring establishments came to Rs 24.25 lakh at the end of a day-long inspection as part of the dengue prevention measures in Salem.

Officials also warned of severe action against several others for not implementing mosquito control measures in the premises of houses and commercial establishments.

Don't need to stand up in movie halls to prove patriotism: Supreme Court asks Centre to consider regulating playing of national anthem in movie theatres

NEW DELHI: People do not need to stand up in the cinema halls to prove their patriotism, the Supreme Court said today and asked the Centre to consider amending the rules for regulating playing of the national anthem in the theatres.

The top court also observed that it cannot be assumed that if a person does not stand up for national anthem, then he is "less patriotic".

Observing that the society did not need "moral policing", a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra said the next time, "the government will want people to stop wearing T-shirts and shorts to cinemas saying this would disrespect the national anthem." It said it will not allow the government to "shoot from its shoulder" and asked it to take a call either way on the issue of regulating the playing the anthem.

The bench also indicated that it may modify its order of December 1, 2016, by which the playing of the anthem was made mandatory in the movie halls before the screening of a film, and it may replace the word "shall" with "may".

"People go to cinema halls for undiluted entertainment.

Society needs entertainment. We cannot allow you (Centre) to shoot from our shoulders. People do not need to stand up in cinema halls to prove their patriotism," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said.

"Desireability is one thing but making it mandatory is another. Citizens cannot be forced to carry patriotism on their sleeves and courts cannot inculcate patriotism among people through its order," the bench said.

The court's strong remarks came during the hearing on a PIL filed last year by one Shyam Narayan Chouksey seeking directions that the national anthem should be played in all the cinema halls before a film begins.

In contrast to these remarks, a bench headed by Justice Misra had ordered the theatres across the country on December 1 last year to "mandatorily" play the national anthem before a movie and the audience must stand and show respect, in a bid to "instil committed patriotism and nationalism".

During today's hearing on the PIL, Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, said India was a diverse country and the national anthem needed to be played in the cinema halls to bring in uniformity.

He said it should be left open to the government to take a call on its own discretion on whether the anthem should be played in theatres and whether people should stand up for it.

"What is stopping you from amending the Flag Code? You can amend it and say where to play national anthem and where it can't be done. Nowadays, anthem is played during matches, tournaments and even Olympics where half of the crowd does not understand its meaning," Justice Chandrachud said.

The bench said "You (Centre) take a call. Government should not show any reservation to the amendment as the court would not allow it to shoot from its shoulders".

The court then asked the Centre to consider taking a call by January 9, the next date of hearing, on amending the national flag code for regulating the playing of national anthem in cinema halls across the country.

It said the Centre has to take a call uninfluenced by its earlier order on the playing of the national anthem in the theatres.

The apex court had in its December last year's order said that "love and respect for the motherland is reflected when one shows respect to the national anthem as well as to the national flag".

It had also barred printing of the anthem or a part of it on any object and displaying it in such a manner at places which may be "disgraceful to its status and tantamount to disrespect".

Passing a slew of directions, the court had said that fundamental duties in the Constitution "do not allow any different notion or the perception of individual rights that have individual thought, have no space. The idea is constitutionally impermissible".

"The directions are issued, for love and respect for the motherland is reflected when one shows respect to the National Anthem as well as to the National Flag. That apart, it would instil the feeling within one a sense committed patriotism and nationalism," it had then said.

It had also said proper norms and protocol should be fixed regarding its playing and singing at official functions and programmes where those holding constitutional office are present.

Chennai airport customs officials seize gold worth Rs 63 lakh

CHENNAI: Customs officials at the Chennai airport have seized 2.13kg of gold worth Rs 63 lakh, in the last four days.

On Thursday night, 597gm of gold worth Rs 17.7 lakh was seized from a passenger who arrived here from Colombo. The gold was concealed inside two oil pistons.

On Friday, 548gm of gold worth Rs 16 lakh was seized from a passenger from Dubai who had concealed it in his undergarment.

அந்த வடிவத்தில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட தலைப்பே இன்றைய நீயா நானா. இதில் கேரள பெண்களும், தமிழ் பெண்களும் தங்களின் உடையழகு பற்றியும், நகையழகு பற்றியும், ஆளுமையின் அழகு பற்றியும், அகமும் புறமும் சார்ந்து பேசினர். அவர்களின் குரல் இந்த முறை இடதுசாரி பெண்ணியவாதிகளால் நெறிக்கப்பட்டது. பெண்ணின் அழகைப் பற்றி பேசவே கூடாது என்று காவல்துறை வாயிலாக தடை வாங்கியுள்ளனர் இடதுசாரி பெண்ணியவாதிகள்.

கல்லூரி பெண்கள் தங்கள் உளவியல் பற்றி பேசுவதைக் கேட்க கூட பொறுமையில்லாமல் இவர்கள் கூச்சலிடுவது ஏன்? ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சி வருவதற்கு முன்பே தடை விதிக்க கோரும் மத அடிப்படைவாதிகளுக்கும், சாதிய அடிப்படைவாதிகளுக்கும், இடதுசாரி அடிப்படைவாதிகளுக்கும் என்ன வித்தியாசம்?'' என்று ஆண்டனி கேள்வி எழுப்பினார்.
