Jet allows flyers to bid for upgrade

Jet Airways passengers will now be be able to bidfor an upgradeto a higher class of travel. Jet says the bidding, which it claims is “an industry first” for airlines in India, will open at least seven days prior to the flight’s departure date and closes 24 hours before scheduled departure time.

In the interim, guests can modify, or even cancel their bids. However, they will not be able to withdraw their bid, once the bid is accepted as per the defined timelines.

“The innovation allows all guests holding confirmed economy or premiere bookings of the airline to bid for an upgrade to premiere or first class, respectively. To avail an upgrade, interested guests can place a bid on the Jet Airways’ website under the ‘manage mybooking’ section, stating the amount they’re willing to bid for the upgrade,”the airlinesaidin a statement. While all bidders will need to submit their credit card details during the bidding process, only the card of the winning bidder will be charged.

Jet’s senior VP Raj Sivakumar said: “JetUpgrade illustrates yet another first in the airline’s history of undertaking continuous innovations for over two decades, in order to offer guests an exceptional flying experience. JetUpgrade raises the industry benchmark of customer experience, offering more value to those guests who appreciate our superior inflight services.” TNN

MKU scandal: Santhanam to question Nirmala today

R Santhanam, the one-man inquiry panel set up by governor Banwarilal Purohit to probe the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) sex scandal, will meet Nirmala Devi, assistant professor of Devanga Arts College, Arupukottai, at the Madurai central prison on Thursday morning.

Santhanam who began his second phase of inquiry on Wednesday, told mediapersons late in the evening that he had received permission from the prison authorities to meet Devi who was arrested on April 16 for allegedly trying to lure some girl students to do sexual favours for higher officials. Meanwhile, MKU assistant professor V Murugan, who was arrested by CB-CID in connection with the sex scandal, was sent to five days’ police custody on Wednesday. In another development, a former research scholar at the university, Karuppasamy, who was wanted by the CB-CID, surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate V, K S Shabeena, in Madurai who remanded him in prison.

Murugan, who worked in the department of management studies, was arrested on Tuesday and produced before the Sattur judicial magistrate II. He was lodged in the Virudhunagar prison at night and produced by CBCID again in court on Wednesday to seek his custody. Murugan was arrested as his name cropped up in the interrogation of Nirmala Devi during her five day CBCID custody which ended on Wednesday. She too was produced before the court and lodged in central prison as the court ordered her judicial remand for 15 days.

On Wednesday, Santhanam took statements from various higher officials of the university including vice-chancellor P P Chellathurai and registrar V Chinniah. Additional controller of examination M Rajarajan and director of UGC Human Resource Development in MKU, V Kalaiselvan, also appeared before the committee.

Joint director of collegiate education, Madurai, K Koodalingam, told mediapersons that he was not informed by Devanga Arts College about the complaint of the girls.

Scrap Santhanam panel, says forum

Madurai: “Save MKU Coalition”, a forum comprising retired professors, lawyers and social activists, has demanded the scrapping of the one-man Santhanam commission inquiring into the Madurai Kamaraj University sex scandal. Instead, it has demanded a probe by a panel formed with distinguished educationalists and a retired high court judge as members. It claimed that there was no provision in the rules governing MKU for the governor to form an inquiry commission. The outfit said that the Nirmala Devi incident, where she allegedly tried to lure a group of girls to do sexual favours for higher officials in the university, was just the tip of the iceberg. The scandal was an extension of the deteriorating environment in the university in the last few years, the members said. The coalition while expressing confidence in the CB-CID inquiry felt that the probe could have been conducted under the supervision of the high court. TNN

TN seeks relief in distance edu norms

Universities offering distance education courses are left in a fix after the recent announcement from University Grants Commission (UGC) that a minimum CGPA of 3.26, on a four point scale, in National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) is necessary to run the courses.

The higher education department has now asked UGC to relax its norms facilitating all state universities to run distance education courses. It has also directed the seven state universities that are left out to make individual representation to UGC in this regard.

Of the 119 dual mode universities in the country that offer distance education courses, less than 40 are eligible as per the new UGC rule. This has left 80 universities in a fix. In Tamil Nadu only three universities out of the total 10 that offer distance courses under the higher education department are eligible and the rest have to close down.

“While Anna, Madras and Alagappa University are safe, universities like Annamalai in Chidambaram which began offering distance education much before Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) are on the verge of closure,” said senior officials from the higher education department.

Bharathiar University which has been ranked 12th in the country in the NIRF ranking, cannot offer courses in distance mode as it has a CGPA of 3.11 on the four point scale under NAAC. “We have decided to approach UGC seeking relaxation of up to 3.0 in the Category 2 from the existing 3.26, so that all state universities are eligible to run courses,” said vice chancellor of Bharathidasan University P Manisankar.

Wishing to be anonymous, another state university V-C said that the UGC should have stability in its policies. “It is wrong to come out with such decisions without consulting the universities. The UGC did not bother about what will happen to the students currently enrolled in these distance education courses,” the V-C said.

Former vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University S Sivasubramanian who holds experience in heading various NAAC committees said that he stands for quality and that whenever there is relaxation in norms, people tend to misuse it. However, he added that time bound relaxation can be considered for students who are currently enrolled. He also said that the universities should prove to be competent and eligible to run such courses.

Former president of association of university teachers (AUT) K Pandiyan claimed that the move was to cut down on the number of universities offering distance education.

SC: Never directed linking of Aadhaar with mobile nos

The mad rush to link mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar supposedly to comply with a directive of the Supreme Court was uncalled for. The SC on Wednesday clarified that it had not ordered mandatory linkage, and said the government misinterpreted its February 6, 2017, observation and insisted on doing it.

“In Lokniti Foundation case, the SC has not directed linking of SIM with Aadhaar. But the Union government’s circular says so. There was no direction by the court whereas the government’s circular clearly said so,” Justice D Y Chandrachud said during the hearing of Aadhaar case before a bench that also included CJI Dipak Misra and Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar and Ashok Bhushan. The CJI-led bench pointed out that the February 6, 2017 order merely recorded then attorney general Mukul Rohatgi’s submission that Aadhaar was one of the documents used for verification of subscriber identity as was sought by a public interest petition filed by NGO ‘Lokniti Foundation’. 



Call records not accessed through Aadhaar: Advocate

Significantly, senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, who appeared for UIDAI, agreed with the bench and said the government appeared to have taken the SC’s observations for verification of mobile phone subscribers seriously.

Drawing Dwivedi’s attention to the February 6 order, the bench said the court merely recorded the AG’s submission that “an effective programme for the same (verification of subscriber identity) would be devised at the earliest and the process of identity verification will be completed within one year”.

The bench set the record straight when Dwivedi argued that one-time seeding of mobile number with Aadhaar was not a big ask and would not lead to intrusion into citizens’ privacy as no call records were maintained through Aadhaar.

UIDAI’s insistence that the SC had mandated that all mobile connections be linked with Aadhaar had led to a scramble of sorts, with mobile service providers, nudged by the government, inundating subscribers with dire messages on the need to abide by the alleged order of the “hon’ble” apex court. While initially many rushed to service centres to meet the “obligation”, the government soon prevailed on telecom companies to roll out a scheme where the chore could be completed in a smooth manner without having to step out of home.

The SC on March13 had indefinitely extended the deadline for linkage of Aadhaar with mobile numbers and bank accounts of individuals and asked the government to wait till the constitution bench decided the validity of Aadhaar to take further steps in this regard. The Centre had in the interim agreed to extend the deadline for bank account linkage with Aadhaar till March 31.

Dwivedi said under the Telegraph Act, the Centre could insist that telecom service providers set a condition for linkage of Aadhaar with SIM as part of their licence agreement for use of air waves, or spectrum. “It is just a one-time verification of SIM card with Aadhaar to stop many kinds of mischief. Is it excessive? It is not that call records of individuals are being accessed through Aadhaar, which is incapable of being used for surveillance purposes,” he said.

திருமணம், வீடுகளில் நடந்த காலமொன்று இருந்தது. இல்லம் சிறிதாக இருந்தாலும் உள்ளம் பெரிதாக இருந்ததால் அது சாத்தியமானது.

ஊரே மூன்று நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு களைகட்டிவிடும். அத்தனை வீடுகளின் அடுப்புகளும் அணைந்துவிடும். கல்யாண வீட்டில் அவர்களுக்குச் சாப்பாடு. கலகலப்பும், கலாய்ப்பும் கிராமம் முழுவதும் கேட்கும். கூம்பு வடிவ ஒலிபெருக்கி ‘இங்கு விசேஷம்’ என்று அறிவிக்கும். மொத்தம் நான்கே பாடல்கள். திரும்பத் திரும்ப ஒலித்து கேட்பவர்களுக்கு மனப்பாடம் ஆகிவிடும். திருமணத்தன்று ‘மணமகளே மணமகளே வா வா’ பாடல் கட்டாயம் ஒலிப்பதுண்டு.

உணவுக்கு முன்பு உழைப்பைப் பகிர்கிற நடைமுறை. ஒருவர் காய் நறுக்க, இன்னொருவர் அரிசி களைய, மற்றொருவர் அப்பளம் பொரிக்க, சுடச்சுட சாப்பாடு தயாராகும். உணவு என்பது அறுசுவை அல்ல. அள்ளி ஊற்றும் குழம்பு, குளம்கட்டி அடிக்கும் சோறு, கொஞ்சம் பொரியல், தாராள ரசம், தாளித்த நீர்மோர் இவையே பெரும்பாலும் இருக்கும். ஆனால், அதற்குத்தான் அத்தனை ருசி!

உறவு விசிறி... உன்னதத் தூக்கம்

ஊர்க்காரர்கள் திருமண வீட்டுக்கு ஒத்தாசையோடு உபரிப் பொருட்களையும் கொண்டுவருவார்கள். ஒருவர் காய்கறி, இன்னொருவர் வெங்காயம், மற்றொருவர் அரிசி என்று அந்தக் கல்யாணம் அனைவர் வீட்டுக்கும் உரிமையானது. வாழை பயிரிட்ட ஒருவர், கல்யாண வீட்டு வாசலில் கட்டுவதற்கு தாரோடு வாழை மரங்களைக் கட்டைவண்டியில் கொண்டுவந்து, அவரே ஆசையாய்க் கட்டுவார். வீட்டுக்கு முன்பு பந்தலிடப்படும். அங்குதான் மணவறை அமைக்கப்படும். வசதிக்கேற்ப பந்தலின் விசாலம் பெரிதாய் விரியும்.

பெண்களெல்லாம் பாயில் அமர, ஆண்களெல்லாம் திண்ணையில் சாய, உறவுகளெல்லாம் புதுப்பிக்கப்படும். சரமாரியாய் நல விசாரிப்புகள். இரவு நேரத்தில் அத்தனை வீடும் சத்திரமாகும். திண்ணைகளெல்லாம் கட்டில்களாகும். பெரியவர்களுக்கு கயிற்றுக் கட்டில். கொசுவை மீறி, புழுக்கத்தை மீறி உறவு விசிறியால் உன்னதத் தூக்கம். போர்வை வேண்டுமென்றோ, மெத்தை தேவையென்றோ யாரும் கொடி பிடித்ததுமில்லை, அடுத்தவரிடம் குறை சொன்னதுமில்லை.

பந்தி என்பது சொந்தங்கள் பரிமாறும் சுகமான உபசரிப்பு. தரையில் விரியும் நீளப் பாய்கள். சமயத்தில் படுக்கைப் பாயே மடித்து விரிக்கப்படும். முதலில் ஜிலேபித்தூள் தூக்கலாக உள்ள இனிப்பைப் பரிமாறுவார்கள். பின்னர் வடை. அதற்குள் அப்பளம் பெரிதாக எண்ணெய் சொட்டச்சொட்ட. சோற்றை ஒருவர் இலையில் தள்ளிக்கொண்டே போவார். ஏழை உறவினர்கள் இனிப்பை அப்புறம் சாப்பிட லாம் என்று எடுத்து பத்திரப்படுத்துவதும் உண்டு.

பந்தல் போடும் சந்தோஷம்

சொந்தத்தில் பெண்ணைக் கொடுப்பதே பெரும்பாலும் வழக்கம். நன்றாகத் தெரிந்த குடும்பத்தில் நான்கு முறை நடந்து, பெண்ணை உற்று கவனித்து, அவளிடம் குடிக்கத் தண்ணீர் கேட்டு, சுறுசுறுப்பைச் சரிபார்த்து, நடையை எடைபோட்டு, பின்னர் பேசி திருமணம் நிச்சயிப்பார்கள். சிலருக்கு சின்ன வயதிலேயே முடிவு செய்து விடுவார்கள்.

தாலிகட்டி முடித்ததும் உறவினரெல் லாம் மணமக்களைத் தங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வரும்படி அழைப்பது மரபு. அவர்களை இரண்டு நாள் தங்க வைத்து தடபுடலாக சாப்பாடு போட்டு அனுப்பி வைத்து, அப்பெண்ணுக்கு ‘நாங்களெல்லாம் இருக்கிறோம்’ என்கிற நம்பிக்கையை ஏற்படுத்துவார்கள். அடுத்து நடக்கும் திருமணத்துக்கு அந்தப் பெண்ணே ஓடியாடி அத்தனைப் பணிகளையும் இழுத்துப்போட்டுக்கொண்டு செய்வாள். அந்தத் திருமணத்திலேயே இன்னும் சில திருமணங்களின் முன்மொழிவுகள் நடந்தேறிவிடும். பந்தலை அவிழ்க்கும்போது விடுமுறை முடிவதைப் போல சோகமொன்று சொல்லாமல் கொள்ளாமல் நெஞ்சில் புகுந்துவிடும்.

அத்தைமார்கள்

பின்னர் வந்தது பெருஞ்சத்திரங்கள். பெரும்பாலும் நகரத்தில் இருப்போர் அங்கு நல்ல காரியங்களை நடத்துவது உண்டு. ஆனாலும் இரண்டு நாள் கொண்டாட்டங்கள் இருக்கும். முதல் நாள் காலையில் முக்கிய உறவினர் முகாமிடுவார்கள். பெண்ணுக்கு பூ கட்டுவதில் இருந்து புடவை கட்டிவிடுவதுவரை அத்தைமார்கள் முந்திக்கொண்டு உதவுவார்கள். தூரத்தில் இருக்கும் சொந்தமெல்லாம் சந்திப்பதற்கு அத்திருமணம் ஒன்றே வாய்ப்பாக இருந்தது. இரவு நேரத்தில் அங்கேயே அனைவரும் கிடைத்ததை விரித்துப் படுத்துக்கொள்வார்கள். வெகுநேரம் கதைகள் பேசி களித்திருப்பார்கள். முகூர்த்தத்துக்குள் தயாராகி அட்சதையோடு காத்திருப்பார்கள்.

‘வரவேற்புக்கு மட்டும் வா’

இப்போது எந்தத் திருமணமும் வீட்டில் நிகழ்வதில்லை. பிரம்மாண்டமான நட்சத்திர மண்டபங்கள். ‘வரவேற்புக்கு மட்டுமே வா’ என்று அழைக்கின்ற அழைப்பிதழ்கள். அன்று பெரும்பாலும் நடந்தோ, மிதிவண்டியிலோ திருமணம் சென்றபோது பிரச்சினை ஏதும் பெரிதாய் இல்லை. இன்று மண்டபங்களில் வாகனங்களை எங்கே நிறுத்துவது என்பதே கேள்விக்குறி.

திருமணம் என்பது இன்று அந்தஸ்தாகிவிட்டது. சிலர் கூட்டுகிற கூட்டத்தில் நெரிசல் ஏற்பட்டு மண்டபம் போய்ச் சேர்வதற்குள் மண்டை காய்ந்துவிடுகிறது. அன்று ஒலிபெருக்கி என்றால் இன்று பாட்டுக் கச்சேரி. கல்யாணியும், காம்போதியும் காற்றில் கரைய கேட்டு ரசிக்கவோ, தாளம் போடவோ யாரும் இருப்பதில்லை. பல இடங்களில் காதைப் பிளக்கிற மெல்லிசைக் கச்சேரி நடுவே குசலம் விசாரிப்பதில்கூட குளறுபடிகள்.

சில நேரங்களில் ஒரே ஒரு முறை சந்தித்தவரும் அழைப்பிதழை தந்துவிட் டுப் போய்விடுகிறார். அங்கு செல்லும் போது திருமணம் அவருடைய பெண்ணுக்கா? மகனுக்கா என்று குழப்பம். நான்கைந்து மண்டபங்கள் ஒரே இடத் தில் இருக்க, தப்பித் தவறி வேறொரு மண்டபத்துக்குச் சென்றுவிட்டு அங்கு யாருமில்லாததால் அசடு வழிய உரிய மண்டபத்துக்கு வருபவர் உண்டு.

பல நிகழ்வுகளில் அழைக்கும்போது இருக்கும் வீரியம் ஆஜராகும்போது இருப்பதில்லை. சில இடங்களில் மணமக்களைப் பார்ப்பது திருப்பதி தரிசனம்போல் சிரமமாக இருக்கும்.

கல்யாண நைவேத்தியம்

நிற்கிற பந்திகளில் நிறைய பலகாரங்கள். அதில் இருக்கும் நெருக்கத்தில் உணவை எடுத்து வந்து சாப்பிடுவது போராட்டம். உட்காரும் பந்திகளில் வரிசையாக பதார்த்தங்களை வைத்துவிட்டு கூப்பிடும் வழக்கம். சாப்பிட்டாலும், சாப்பிடாவிட்டாலும் எத்தனை பதார்த்தம் என்பதை சமைக்கிற நிறுவனம் தீர்மானிக்கும்.

அத்தனைக்கும் காசு. இரண்டாம் முறை பதார்த்தங்களை நைவேத்தியம்போல காட்டிக்கொண்டே செல்வார்கள். தலையை ஆட்டினால் இலையில் விழும். சம்பந்தா சம்பந்தமில்லாத உணவு வகைகள். தென்னிந்திய உணவுக்கு இறுதியில் வரும் சூப். திடீரென கைக்குட்டை ரொட்டி இலையில் விழும். அதற்கு எதைத் தொட்டுக்கொள்வது என்பதைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பதே பெரும்பாடு. உண்பவற்றைவிட உதிர்ப்பவை அதிகம். அவ்வளவையும் சாப்பிட்டாலும் திருப்தி கிடைக்காத மனநிலை. நாம் சாப்பிடும்போதே எப்போது முடிப்போம் என்று ‘உறுமீன் வருமளவு காத்திருக்கும் கொக்குபோல’ சிலர் காத்திருப்பார்கள்.

அலங்கார தாமதம்

பல இடங்களில் வரவேற்பு 7 மணிக்கு என்று போட்டிருப்பார்கள். பெண்ணும், மாப்பிள்ளையும் வருவதற்கே 8 மணி ஆகிவிடும். அதற்குள் வந்தவர்களுக்குப் பொறுமை போய்விடும். மாநகரங்களில் வீட்டுக்குப் போய்ச் சேர்வது போரில் இருந்து திரும்புவதைப் போல சாதனையாகிவிடுகிறது.

அத்தனை பேரும் தாமதிக்கிற பெண்ணையும், மாப்பிள்ளையையும் கண்டபடி திட்டித் தீர்ப்பார்கள். இதுவே திருமணத்துக்கான ஆசிர்வாதம். அன்று அத்தைகள் கட்டிய சேலையைச் சுற்றிவிடவும், சித்தி பூசிய பவுடரை முகத்தில் அப்புவதற்கும் இன்றைக்கு அழகு நிலையங்கள் செல்வதே தாமதத்துக்குக் காரணம். திருமணம் என்பது இன்று மங்கள நிகழ்வு அல்ல. செல்வாக்கைக் காட்டும் அடையாளம். ‘எத்தனை பேர் எனக்கிருக்கிறார்கள் பார்’ என்று சொல்லும் உரத்த செய்தி.

இன்றையத் திருமணம் மணமக்களோடு எடுக்கும் புகைப்படத்தோடும், செயற்கையாகப் புரியும் புன்னகையோடும் முடிந்துவிடுகிற அம்சம்.

தஞ்சாவூர்: தஞ்சை பெரியகோவில் தேரோட்டம் நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. திரளான பக்தர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டு தேரை இழுத்து வருகின்றனர்.
