KARUR: Breaking barriers and stereotypes, this 27-year-old engineer from Karur scripts a success story of taking up fish cold storage business. After graduating in mechanical engineering, Mohan Kumar, worked as an assistant professor at a private college in Karur. However, he developed interest in his family business of selling fish. His parents Palanivel and Selvarani run a fish fry shop at Gandhigramam.

Mohan recalls how he used to run back to the shop after completing his work at the college to help his parents. Though his parents were not happy with him joining the business instead wanting him to achieve something ‘big’, he wanted to chase his passion. Talking to Express, Mohan Kumar said, “Many called me a fool for taking up fish business after completing engineering. But I love this job more than my previous one.”

He recalled that at one point in time, his mother was affected with neurological disorder and they had to shut down the shop. However, profitable income from the business helped him get going. “I had to cross a lot of hurdles in this field. Despite lack of support from family friends, it was my friends Dineshwar and Karthik who kept motivating me and pushed me to follow my dreams,” he said. Mohan supplies two to three ton of frozen fish and meat to several star hotels and small-scale food chains in Karur, where the business is not usually taken up.

He gets fish from Thoothukudi and Cochin, and meat from a poultry industry in Coimbatore. He earns about 1 lakh a month. “At present, my main aim is to set up a 10-tonne cold storage unit in Karur,” he said. Speaking about overcoming challenges, he said, “People in the society who say that youngsters should be given equal opportunities to help them develop their career does not really help them. A lot of ‘big fishes’ in the industry do not allow youngsters to grow. An entrepreneur has to face such challenged in the initial stages of a start-up.”Inspired by his successful venture, several business schools and colleges have requested him to deliver a speech on entrepreneurship skill development.

Medical staff from across India working with COVID-19 patients appealed to the Union Health Ministry for help on Tuesday stating that they are being harassed, with several of them told to immediately vacate their rented accommodation by landlords because of the fear that they could spread the virus.

The Resident Doctors’ Association of All India Institute of Medical Sciences has written to the Ministry seeking urgent intervention.

“Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff involved in COVID-19 care are being asked to vacate their rented homes for the fear that they may spread the virus. Many doctors are now stranded on the road with their luggage with nowhere to go. This is happening across the country and we condemn such attitude and seek urgent intervention. Also with the lockdown in place, not enough public transport is available for hospital staff to travel from their residence to various hospitals,” said the letter.

Ministers react quickly

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted expressing deep anguish, saying he noticed such reports pouring in from Delhi, Noida, Warangal, Chennai, etc., and asked people not to panic. He said all precautions are being taken by doctors and staff on COVID-19 duty to ensure they are not carriers of infection in any way.

“Any harsh steps will demoralise them, derail the system. On Sunday, the nation applauded their selfless service. It’s our duty to keep their morale high,” Mr. Vardhan said.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also tweeted in support of the doctors. “The Centre must immediately step in to ensure protection of doctors and paramedics, who are putting their lives on the line for our sake, from such harassment. Necessary protective gear should also be provided for their safety,” he said.

AIIMS RDA general secretary Srinivas Rajkumar said Home Minister Amit Shah has assured that any such issue of ostracisation will be taken seriously and action taken immediately.

Help pours in

After AIIMS doctors issued an appeal for help in procuring personal protection gear for medical staff and released a list of equipment immediately required, help started pouring in on Tuesday itself. “After our communication with the Health Ministry, several people and companies have offered support through various possible means,” noted a statement issued by the RDA.

It added that to help the AIIMS administration fast-track COVID-19 preparedness, public sector unit Bharat Dynamics has come forward to help with manufacturing, funds and logistics. “We have secured the AIIMS administration a sum of Rs. 60 lakh from the CSR corpus of Bharat Dynamics (Rs.50 lakh) and POSCO India Pvt Ltd. The Delhi Health Department has said that legal action will be taken against those obstructing essential work.
Nurses and paramedical staff assaulted

25/03/2020, STAFF REPORTER,SURYAPET

At least 25 nurses and paramedical staff of the Suryapet General Hospital protested the high-handedness of the town police, who allegedly resorted to beating up a few of them when they were on their way to duty on Tuesday.

The group of nurses along with their support staff stood outside the hospital, demanding action and solutions to their everyday problems. According to one of the victims, she was being dropped by her husband in the motorcycle for Tuesday morning duty and a police official wielded his baton on them.

Another senior nurse of the hospital Padma, also alleged that a sub-inspector rank official resorted to beating her and the person who was accompanying her to the workplace.

Refuse to listen

“We leave our families behind and the police resort to such violence. They don’t even listen when we produce our identity cards,” one of them said. They also said that the police were asking them to go on foot, rather than being dropped by family members. “If they are so concerned about containing the infection, why not the authorities arrange pick & drop facility for health staff?” the paramedic staff said.

Suryapet police, speaking to The Hindu, however, said that the whole issue was being blown out of proportion.
