Chennai: Writers are usually possessive with their pens; they seldom gift it to their friends. But, poet and lyricist Vairamuthu, who met DMK president M. Karunanidhi on July 11 this year to seek his blessings on his birthday has received a rare gift of the iconic pen used by the legendary writer and his literary icon.

“After seeking Karunanidhi’s blessings, I asked for a gift - the iconic pen used by him. He asked his daughter Kanimozhi to get the pen and presented it to me. It will be my prized possession. I never knew it was going to be my last meeting with him,” an emotional Vairamuthu told this paper.

“Before leaving, he raised his hands to bless me. Everyone around him was surprised with that gesture,” he recalled about the meeting with ailing DMK patriarch last month.

Even while he was busy as the Chief Minister, Mr. Karunanidhi would take his literary friends to places like Mamallapuram to talk about literature. It was his interest in literature that had kept him very active even when he was out of power.

He bestowed the sobriquet ‘Kaviperarasu’ to Vairamuthu. “We know each other for over 35 years. I am feeling like I have lost my father,” Vairamuthu said.

When asked about his unfulfilled wishes, he said, “Karunanidhi’s long-cherished wish was to remove “the thorn from the heart” of his mentor and social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.”

Periyar considered the continuation of caste discrimination in temple priesthood as the last thorn in his heart. “That wish was fulfilled recently with the appointment of a non-brahmin priest at a temple near Madurai,” he said. “Karunanidhi wanted all Tamils to live with self-respect and fought for more autonomy for the state of Tamil Nadu,” Vairamuthu said.

CHENNAI: Two foreigners joined the sea of DMK workers who assembled in front of Kauvery Hospital where DMK chief M Karunanidhi died on Tuesday evening.

Mattia Saratti from Italy and Fank Li from Portugal were in the city to work as volunteers for an NGO for a month.

Earlier, after watching television news about DMK chief’s deteriorating health, the two walked to Kauvery Hospital around 5pm and began interacting with party workers.

Surprised by the support of the party workers who were shouting slogans, the two soon joined them.

After the DMK chief’s death was announced and when news spread that the Tamil Nadu government had refused to allot a space on Marina Beach as the leader’s final resting place, party workers started shouting slogans condemning the government’s decision. The two foreigners too shouted slogans without realising the situation.

“I was told that he had been in politics for several decades and was a great leader. I have never seen such support and affection for a political party leader in my country. We know only to eat,” Saratti said.

Dismissals, cases, inquiries, nothing could pull him down

Chennai: In the end, M Karunanidhi departed a free soul, unsinged by the umpteen judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings he had battled for about half a century.
Indictments by one-man inquiry commissions and their damning reports apart, nothing could taint him, as, on the day he breathed his last, Karunanidhi had no case pending against him nor had he been convicted in any case, ever. On January 18, 2016, when he visited a court last — wheelchair-bound — for a defamation case hearing, he turned the event into a cadre contact programme, instead of letting it stifle him.

Quite unfailingly, his detractors kept dusting up the R S Sarkaria Commission report against Karunanidhi and his cabinet colleagues, but for all legal purposes the report was not worth the paper on which it had been printed because it was neither accepted nor acted upon. An equally uncomplimentary report was tabled by the Justice Milap Chand Jain commission which probed the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. It blamed Karunanidhi for harbouring Sri Lankan militants and turning a blind eye to their excesses during their stay in Tamil Nadu. But it remained a report and nothing worthwhile came of it.

A third commission — that of Justice R Reghupathy, formed to probe the suspected corruption in the new assembly-secretariat complex project — has been mired in litigation for more than five years now.

The ‘mini-flyover case’ and his midnight arrest in June 2001 threatened to bog him down during his later years when he had to battle an aggressive J Jayalalithaa. But having fended off the offensive, Karunanidhi saw to it that the case was dropped by police ‘due to insufficient evidence’, days after DMK returned to government in 2006.

That helped him maintain a clean slate on the judicial front till the Jayalalithaa government launched the assembly-secretariat offensive. But that too did not help his detractors drag him to court. Though the Justice Reghupathy commission issued summons to Karunanidhi, it could not enforce his attendance, as the Madras high court stepped in and stayed its proceedings.

 senior bureaucrat recalls the time when, as a callow young collector, he sent a letter to Karunanidhi for permission to tax amusement parks which were flourishing. In a few days, he was surprised to see a government order levying entertainment tax on amusement parks across the state.

It was this democratic and approachable style of administration that endeared Karunanidhi to bureaucrats, besides his attention to detail. Bureaucrats who served with him recall that he’d drop into the Secretariat on weekends too.

Former home secretary R Poornalingam remembers him as "the taskmaster who wanted tomorrow’s work executed yesterday". His expectations pushed people around him to work harder and match his energy, says Poornalingam. His welfare schemes carried names in chaste Tamil, all of which he picked, putting to good use a turn of phrase and mastery of Tamil. But suggestions for the schemes could come from any minister or bureaucrat — they could walk into his chamber or call him late at night.

A school dropout who educated himself at the feet of leaders like Periyar and Anna as well as in the rich theatre tradition of the 1930s and 40s, Karunanidhi learned finance and administration on his own. Cabinet meetings rarely ended within two hours as Karunanidhi would discuss each subject threadbare. "Ennaya solra?" (what are you saying) was his question to every person in the room before a proposal was cleared.

Karunanidhi vetted all letters and notes from secretaries to the Centre. "Why use harsh words when nuances will work better," he often says. When five senior bureaucrats drafted a letter in English on the UPA’s GST proposal, Karunanidhi got one of them to read it to him. "He made corrections at every stage and a highly improved version reached PM Manmohan Singh," says an officer. Government press releases and advertisements needed his stamp of approval. Part of this tight control was also a strategic move to centralize administration and decision-making.

He was known for his early morning phone calls to bureaucrats after he had read the newspapers, which he says held a mirror to what concerned people. He would question officers across the state on everything, from a report about a badly-maintained local park to a clash between communities.

"If you get a call at 5.30am, it must be the chief minister," says an officer. When one civic official tried arguing that clearing a garbage dump at Chennai Central was out of his jurisdiction, Karunanidhi shot back, "Isn’t Chennai Central station located in Chennai?" It was not uncommon to see him travelling by train with files in huge boxes, as he was keen to clear them on time. To match his pace, his staff would wait at railway junctions en route to collect the files.

Much of Karunanidhi’s energy was directed towards administering his many and sometimes excessively munificent welfare schemes. Anna Marumalarchi, Namakku Namme, Uzhavar Sandhais and Varumun Kappoom were some of them. He set up separate departments for the welfare of the differently-abled, backward classes and minorities.

Karunanidhi's commitment to resolving inter-state water issues was well-known. In November 2006, when the Supreme Court directed Kerala and Tamil Nadu to hold talks between chief ministers to resolve the issue of raising Mullaperiyar dam water storage to 142ft, Karunanidhi, who arrived at Tamil Nadu House in Delhi, woke up officials at midnight to discuss and draft the opening remarks for a meeting the following day. "The midnight-meet went on for three hours. He recalled the work of social reformers like Periyar of Tamil Nadu and Sree Narayana Guru of Kerala to drive home the point about nurturing relations between the states, in the next day’s meeting," says an official who attended the meeting.

DMK seeks Marina, Tamil Nadu says no, matter in court

Even before the ink on Kauvery Hospital’s death report of DMK chief M Karunanidhi could dry, his kin and party workers were dumbstruck by the state’s refusal to allot him a resting place on the Marina.

In a terse official statement, chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan said: “Allocation could not be made for burial in Marina beach on Kamaraj Salai due to several cases pending in Madras high court and legalities involved. Instead, chief minister said the government was ready to offer two acres of land opposite to Anna University on Sardar Patel Road (Adyar), near Gandhi Mandapam, and the memorials of Rajaji and Kamaraj to bury the leader.”

DMK working president M K Stalin then made a public request to chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for a Marina memorial for Karunanidhi. It quickly gathered steam with all other parties and leaders, including Congress president Rahul Gandhi and superstar Rajinikanth, calling upon the government to accept the request. DMK also rushed to the Madras high court and obtained midnight hearing of its case.

Acting chief justice Huluvadi G Ramesh agreed to hold the hearing of the case, which rests on the DMK’s demand that the five-time and longest serving chief minister of Tamil Nadu had a vested right to have a memorial on the Marina.

Midnight proceedings before the first bench of acting chief justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice S S Sundar, held at the former’s residence, witnessed heated arguments with DMK counsel R S Bharathi arguing that the part of Marina beach where the memorials stood would not attract restrictive provisions of Coastal Regulation Zone.

Earlier, advocate S Doraiswamy, who had filed four PILs against a memorial for former chief minister Jayalalithaa inside the MGR memorial campus on the Marina, said he would withdraw the petitions, since the government was citing it as reason for denying a memorial for Karunanidhi. Five petitions are pending in the case on the subject.

Counsel for social activist K R ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy, however, said he would not withdraw the PIL seeking removal of all Marina memorials. Arguments were completed by 1.10 am and the bench adjourned the hearing to 8am on Wednesday. ‘ULTIMATE HONOUR’

‘Official home hardly a status symbol in TN’

It was Karunanidhi, who as chief minister, built memorials for his predecessors C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran. His rival J Jayalalithaa too is getting a beachside abode, although only inside MGR memorial complex, thanks to the efforts of the present government.

Since 1967, no chief minister barring O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami, had an ‘official residence’ in Chennai. Nor has any bungalow been designated as chief minister bungalow in the state. Unlike in other states, an official residence is hardly a status symbol here.

சென்னை : திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் மூத்த தலைவரும் தி.மு.க.,வின் 50 ஆண்டு கால தலைவரும் ஐந்து முறை தமிழகத்தை ஆட்சி செய்தவருமான மு.கருணாநிதி, தன்னுடைய 95வது வயதில் சென்னையில் நேற்று காலமானார். முதுமை காரணமாக உடல் நலிவுற்று ஒன்றரை ஆண்டாக அரசியலை விட்டு ஒதுங்கியிருந்த அவர் 11 நாட்களாக மருத்துவமனையில் நடந்த மருத்துவ போராட்டத்துக்கு பின் மறைந்தார்.பல போராட்ட களங்களை கண்டு வெற்றி பெற்றவர், மரணத்துக்கு எதிரான போராட்டத்தில் மட்டும் தோற்றார். காவிரி மண்ணில் பிறந்த கருணாநிதியின் உயிர் காவேரி மருத்துவமனையில் பிரிந்தது.

பத்திரிகையாளராக, தமிழ் இலக்கிய படைப்பாளியாக, திரைப்பட வசனகர்த்தாவாக, பல பரிமாணங்களை பெற்ற கருணாநிதி தமிழக அரசியலிலும், எம்.எல்.ஏ., எதிர்க்கட்சி தலைவர், முதல்வர் என அரை நுாற்றாண்டுக்கும் மேலாக அசைக்க முடியாத சக்தியாக, ஆளுமை மிக்க தலைவராக வலம் வந்தார். திருவாரூருக்கு அருகே திருக்குவளை என்ற குக்கிராமத்தில் பிறந்தாலும் தேசிய அரசியலில் சில நேரங்களில் புயல் வீசவும், பல நேரங்களில் அமைதி திரும்பவும் காரணமாக இருந்திருக்கிறார்.

'என் உயிரினும் மேலான...' என கரகரப்பான தன் காந்த குரலால் இவர் பேசும் விதமே தனி. அந்த குரலுக்கு கட்டுப்பட்டு காத்து கிடக்கும் தொண்டர்கள் கூட்டம் ஏராளம். தன்னை நேசிக்கும் தன் படைப்பை வாசிக்கும் தொண்டர்களை அழைப்பதற்கென்றே 'உடன்பிறப்பே' என்ற மந்திரச் சொல்லை உருவாக்கி அதையே தி.மு.க.,வின் அடையாளமாகவும் ஆக்கியவர். அதிகாரம் கையில் இருந்தாலும், கை விட்டு போயிருந்தாலும் மக்கள் ஏற்றாலும் புறந்தள்ளினாலும் தன்னம்பிக்கையை தளர விடாமல், விடாமுயற்சியுடன் கொள்கைக்காக உழைப்பது தான் கருணாநிதியின் தனிச்சிறப்பு.

ஈ.வெ.ரா., காலத்தில் அரசியலுக்குள் நுழைந்து, அண்ணாதுரை அடியொற்றி, ராஜாஜி, காமராஜர், பக்தவத்சலம், எம்.ஜி.ஆர்., ஜெயலலிதா என தலைவர்கள் பலரையும், களத்தில் கண்டவர்; வென்றவர்; சிறை பல சென்றவர். தான் சந்தித்த தேர்தல்களில் தோல்வியே காணாமல், தமிழினத்திற்காக பாடுபட்டவர். ஐந்து முறை


























முதல்வர் பதவியை அலங்கரித்தவர். சுயமரியாதை, ஹிந்தி எதிர்ப்பு, பகுத்தறிவு என ஏற்றிருந்த கொள்கைகளில் இறுதி மூச்சு வரை நிலைத்திருந்தவர். திரைப்படத் துறையிலும் 'பராசக்தி, மனோகரா' என பல புதுமைகளை படைத்து, அழிக்க முடியாத காவியங்களை தந்த கருணாநிதி, 50 ஆண்டு காலமாக தி.மு.க.,வின் தலைவராக பதவி வகித்து, ஏறக்குறைய ஒரு நுாற்றாண்டு வாழ்ந்து, மறைந்திருக்கிறார்.

உடல்நலக்குறைவு :

ஒன்றரை ஆண்டாகவே வயது முதிர்வு காரணமாக வீட்டில் ஓய்வில் இருந்த கருணாநிதிக்கு, ஜூலை 18ல், திடீரென உடல் நலக்குறைவு ஏற்பட்டது. சென்னை ஆழ்வார்பேட்டை காவேரி மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார். அங்கு, அவருக்கு தொண்டையில் ஒன்றரை ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் பொருத்தப்பட்டிருந்த 'டிரக்கி யோஸ்டமி' என்ற செயற்கை சுவாசக் கருவி அகற்றப்பட்டதாக தகவல் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

அதன் காரணமாக, கருணாநிதிக்கு நோய் தொற்று உருவானது. இதனால் அவருக்கு காய்ச்சலும் சளித் தொல்லையும் ஏற்பட்டு, கடுமையாக அவதிப்பட்டார். அதற்கான சிகிச்சைகள் அவர் வசித்த சென்னை, கோபாலபுரம் வீட்டில் அளிக்கப்பட்டு வந்த நிலையில், ஜூலை 27 நள்ளிரவில் மூச்சு திணறல், ரத்த அழுத்தம் குறைவு காரணமாக கருணாநிதியின் உடல் நிலை மோசமானது.

இதையடுத்து மறுநாள் அதிகாலை 1:30 மணிக்கு, காவேரி மருத்துவனையில் தீவிர சிகிச்சை பிரிவில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டார். அங்கு அவருக்கு சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டது. ஓரிரு மணி நேர சிகிச்சையில் மருத்துவ அதிசயமாக, மூச்சு திணறல் குறைந்து, ரத்த அழுத்தமும் சீரானது. தொடர்ந்து அவரை டாக்டர்கள் தீவிரமாக கண்காணித்து, சிகிச்சை அளித்தனர்.

இதற்கிடையில், கருணாநிதியின் கல்லீரலில் பாதிப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. பிரபல கல்லீரல் நோய் நிபுணர் முகம்மது ரேலா சிகிச்சை அளித்தார். கல்லீரலில் புற்றுநோய் இல்லை என்றும், ஒவ்வாமை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது என்றும் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. கல்லீரல் நோய்க்கு சிகிச்சை அளித்து வந்தபோது, திடீரென மஞ்சள் காமாலை நோய் கருணாநிதியை தாக்கியது. இதனால், நேற்று முன்தினம் இரவில் அவரது உடல் நிலைக் கவலைக்கிடமானது. நேற்று முன்தினம் மாலை 6:30 மணிக்கு மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகம் சார்பில் அறிக்கை வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

அதில் 'தி.மு.க., தலைவர் கருணாநிதியின் உடல்நிலையில் பின்னடைவு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. வயது முதிர்வு காரணமாக, முக்கிய உறுப்புகளை தொடர்ந்து செயல்பட வைப்பது, பெரும் சவாலாக உள்ளது. மருத்துவ உபகரணங்கள் உதவியுடன், அவரது நிலை தொடர்ந்து கண்காணிக்கப்படுகிறது. அடுத்த 24 மணி நேரத்திற்கு பிறகே எதுவும் சொல்ல முடியும்' என தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.

அதன்படி, நேற்று மாலை 4:30 மணியளவில் மீண்டும் ஒரு அறிக்கையை மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகம் வெளியிட்டது. அதில், கருணாநிதி உடல்நிலை மிகவும் கவலைக்கிடமாக இருப்பதாகவும், அவர் உயிர் வாழ தேவையான முக்கிய உடல் உறுப்புகள், தொடர்ந்து செயல் இழந்து வருவதாகவும் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

உயிர் பிரிந்தது :

இறுதியாக நேற்று மாலை 6:10 மணிக்கு, அவரது உயிர் பிரிந்ததாக, மருத்துவமனை தரப்பில் அதிகாரபூர்வமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. 'எவ்வளவோ முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொண்டும் அவரது உயிரை காப்பாற்ற முடியவில்லை. இந்தியாவின் மூத்த அரசியல் தலைவரை இழந்துள்ள அவரது குடும்பத்தினருக்கும், உலகம் முழுவதும் உள்ள தமிழர்களுக்கும், எங்களுடைய ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கல்கள்' என மாலை 6:40 மணியளவில் மருத்துவமனை தரப்பில் வெளியிடப் பட்ட அறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

காவேரி மருத்துவமனையில் 11 நாட்களாக தீவிர சிகிச்சை பெற்று வந்த கருணாநிதியை ஜனாதிபதி ராம்நாத் கோவிந்த், துணை ஜனாதிபதி வெங்கையா நாயுடு, கவர்னர் பன்வாரிலால் புரோஹித், முதல்வர் பழனிசாமி, துணை முதல்வர் பன்னீர்செல்வம், காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர் ராகுல் மற்றும் தேசிய, மாநில கட்சிகளின் தலைவர்கள், திரையுலக பிரமுகர்கள் வந்து பார்த்தனர்.

பிரதமர் நரேந்திரமோடி, காங்கிரஸ் முன்னாள் தலைவர் சோனியா உள்ளிட்ட பல தேசிய தலைவர்களும், கருணாநிதி நலம் பெற வேண்டினர். 11 நாட்களாக அவர் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த மருத்துவமனை வாசலில் காத்துக் கிடந்த ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தொண்டர்களும், அவர் நலம் பெற்று திரும்ப வேண்டும் என பிரார்த்தனை செய்தனர். ஆனால், அவர்களின் வேண்டுதலும் பிரார்த்தனையும் கருணாநிதியின் கடைசி நாட்களை தள்ளிப் போட உதவியதே தவிர, இயற்கையின் பிடியில் இருந்து அவரின் உயிரை காப்பாற்ற உதவவில்லை.

'கலைஞர்' என அவரது கட்சியினரால் அன்போடு அழைக்கப்பட்ட கருணாநிதி, நேற்று காலமானார். இந்த மண்ணை விட்டு மறைந்தாலும், கோடிக்கணக்கான உடன்பிறப்புகளின் நெஞ்சத்தில், வாழும் கலைஞராக அவர் இருப்பார்!
