Authorities ask siddha docs to work for free, hints at paying them after outrage

Trichy: Appealing to the private siddha medical practitioners to join the battle against Covid-19, director of the department of Indian medicine and homeopathy Chennai S Ganesh has hinted at a plan to give them remuneration for their service.

In a circular sent to the principals of all private siddha medical colleges in the state on July 27, he mentioned about the need for volunteer siddha doctors to work at the Covid Care Centres (CCC) in the state free of cost. He also asked the principals of the private siddha medical colleges to furnish the list of volunteers immediately.

The circular caused an outrage in the social media with private siddha practitioners expressing concern over working without remuneration, while the government is spending crores rupees to fight Covid-19.

“We have asked volunteering siddha practitioners to join us. If they are willing, we will take care of their remuneration for which we are working on a plan to pay them at the district-level,” director Ganesh told ToI.

However, Ganesh said on Wednesday, “We are arranging payment for them also,” he said.

Tamil Nadu Siddha Medical Officers Association has also welcomed the decision of paying the remuneration to volunteer siddha doctors. “The government should pay minimum Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh to the private doctors who are willing to join the battle against Covid-19,” said state secretary of the association Dr B Thamizhkkani, adding that there were about 6,000 self-employed registered siddha medical professionals in the state.

Director Ganesh also revealed the plan of bringing up exclusive siddha covid care centres in all the districts at the earliest. “The plans are afoot to set up full-fledged siddha covid care centres with bed facilities in every district. At present, 18 siddha covid care centres are either functioning or about to become operational in Chennai and other districts,” he said.

On the objective of the centres, he said that asymptomatic and mild symptomatic patients referred from the government hospital will be treated here as in-patients under the care of the siddha doctors. “The concept of the centre is to prevent asymptomatic and mild symptomatic patients from deteriorating further,” he said adding that around 1,000 doctors of Ayush stream in the government sector have been involved in the work across the state now.

He also said that government Ayush doctors have been given quarantine for a week after their duty. “To overcome the shortage, we asked the private practitioners to join us,” he said.

CHENNAI: The state government is considering resumption of inter-district and intra-district bus services in August, after a month-long suspension. A decision will be taken after chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s meeting with district collectors and health experts on Wednesday and Thursday even as the state braces for one more lockdown phase in August. Opting for a cautious and measured approach, the government will move forward slowly and steadily, highly placed sources said.

There were 57,073 active cases on Monday, while it was 38,889 when the previous lockdown ended on June 30. “The government is considering resuming inter-district as well as intra-district bus transport, barring Chennai. A decision will be taken on July 30 after the chief minister’s meeting with the experts. The zonal system for transport, where districts are divided into zones for movement of buses, may be resumed,” said a source.

Dividing the state into eight zones, the state government resumed public transport with 50% occupancy from June 1, only to suspend the services after three weeks following a surge in cases and difficulties in tracing the contacts.

There is demand for resuming bus services as more and more businesses are opened up in non-containment areas. “But there is a feeling in the government that we should not be in a hurry to open up that may lead to another spurt and then resort to roll back. ‘Let it stabilise, let us watch and then move forward’ has been approach,” said another officer. Interstate bus transport is not on the cards, while educational institutions, shopping malls or cinema halls are unlikely to be opened.

The administrative machinery is making vigorous efforts to ramp up testing and hold aggressive fever camps. There is no backlog of samples for testing beyond 48 hours.

“There are 15,000 samples for a period of 24-48 hours, and 17,000 samples within 24 hours. We are on track and the trend will be known in a couple of days. Relaxations will be progressive,” said a senior official.

Madurai has stabilised with the positivity rate falling to 7.7% on Tuesday from 18% earlier. All southern districts, including Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar have taken up aggressive testing.

On Monday, the government sanctioned Rs 69 crore from the state disaster management authority funds for institutional quarantine of passengers, accommodating asymptomatic positive patients in Covid care centres and creation of new Covid care centres in the districts, excluding Chennai. Districts with high load of cases get Rs 3 crore each.

Uncertainty over lockdown extension has kept government helplines busy.

Tollfree lines setup by Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA) on an average received around 9,000 calls everyday this week, according to official data.

This was almost triple the number of calls made to Amma Call Centre (1100), State Emergency Operation Centre (1070) and toll-free number 1800-425-1333 per day last month.

Anxious people called these numbers to clear their doubts about e-passes required for inter-district and inter-state travel. But many complained that hardly their calls were answered.

One among them, R Chidambaram from Tiruvarur, who was planning to travel to Chennai for his daughter’s wedding in a taxi, was not sure whether his driver can stay back for one day before returning home.

“I was not sure whether our swabs will be collected at Chennai check post and we will be put in institutional quarantine till the results were out. So, first I called 1100. They said that they don’t have these details and advised me to call 1070 by using the district pincode. No one attended the call even after waiting for more than 15 minutes,” he said.

Responding to it, a senior TNeGA official said that the problem was that the volume of calls they received of late was very heavy. All three helpline numbers have 13 to 16 lines each.

“So if all the 16 lines are busy, then it can handle another 16 calls in the waitlist. Anything beyond that will either get dropped or you won’t get any response. But it appears that nobody is picking up the calls,” the official added.

Meanwhile, the demand for e-passes too has increased this month. As the government relaxed lockdown norms, more shops and office spaces opened up increasing people movement. Since lockdown 1.0, TNe-GA has so far processed around 60 lakh e-pass applications and around one-third has been approved.

இதேபோல், தஞ்சாவூா் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி மருத்துவமனையில் 16-ஆம் தேதி சோக்கப்பட்ட திருவாரூா் மாவட்டத்தைச் சோந்த 50 வயது நபா், ஜூலை 19-ஆம் தேதி உயிரிழந்தாா். இவருக்கும் கரோனா தொற்று உறுதிப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதன்மூலம் திருவாரூா் மாவட்டத்தில் கரோனா தொற்றால் உயிரிழந்தவா்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 5 ஆக உயா்ந்துள்ளது. மேலும், கரோனா தொற்றால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவா்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 1548 ஆக உயா்ந்துள்ளது. இதில், 926 போ குணமடைந்து வீடு திரும்பிய நிலையில், 617 போ சிகிச்சையில் உள்ளனா்.

ஆஸ்திரேலிய குடியுரிமைப் பெறுவதில் இந்தியர்கள் முன்னிலை

ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் தங்கியிருக்கும் இந்தியர்கள் கடந்த 2019-2020 ஆண்டில் மட்டும் 38,000 பேர் குடியுரிமைப் பெற்றுள்ளனர். இது கடந்த ஆண்டைக் காட்டிலும் 60 சதவிதம் அதிகமாகும்.

கடந்த ஆண்டு ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் தங்கியிருக்கும் வெளிநாட்டவர்கள் 2,00,000 பேர் குடியுரிமைப் பெற்றுள்ளனர். அதில் இந்தியாவைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் 38,000 பேர் ஆகும். மற்ற நாட்டினரைக் காட்டிலும் இந்தியாவைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களே அதிகளவில் குடியுரிமைப் பெற்றுள்ளனர்.

இதுகுறித்து ஆஸ்திரேலிய அமைச்சர் ஆலன் டட்ஜ் கூறுகையில், "சமூகத்தில் ஒருங்கிணைந்த, பன்முக கலாச்சார நாடாக மாற முக்கியமான ஒன்று மற்ற நாட்டினருக்கு குடியுரிமை வழங்குவதாகும். அதில் ஆஸ்திரேலியா வெற்றி பெற்றுள்ளது.

ஒருவர் ஆஸ்திரேலிய குடிமகனாக மாறுவது என்பது இங்கு வாழ்வதற்கும், வேலை செய்வதற்கும் மேலானது. ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் உரிமைகள், சுதந்திரங்கள், சட்டங்கள் மற்றும் ஜனநாயகத்தை நிலைநிறுத்த அவர்கள் உறுதிமொழி ஏற்கிறார்கள். இது எங்கள் நாட்டின் பன்முக கலாச்சாரத்திற்கு கிடைத்த வெற்றியாகும்" என்று டட்ஜ் கூறினார்.
