Following allegations of sexual harassment against him, lyricist Vairamuthu had sent a video message on Sunday in which he challenged the allegations and said that his accusers can approach the court, where he would prove his innocence. But now, on Monday, a woman identifying herself as Ishwarya on Twitter, has posted an audio claiming that the lyricist behaved improperly with her friend.

In the message, the woman says, “Hello, Mr Vairamuthu, I know that you will easily identify me by my voice, but I’m speaking here on behalf of my friend. I don’t need to know if you are a good or a bad person, but I know that you have done wrong and you are a terrible man. My 24-year-old friend had approached you for an autograph, out of the respect she had for you when you had come to Kalakshetra. You had asked her for her number, and she had shared it with you as you were like a father figure to her. But you did not behave like an elder. You called her at night saying you had written a poem for her and read it out to her. After hearing it, she was heartbroken and dejected, and I know this because I was with her at the time. You might have forgotten the poem, so let me recall it for you… Un iduppu oru udukkai/ Un maarbo oru padukkai (Your hips are like damru/ Your chest is like a bed)! I hope you remember it now as your poem. You are someone who writes poetry to make others happy, and you hold romance in high regard, but your conscience knows how immoral your behaviour was. You know if this is true or not, for I swear on my conscience that this is true. And this is why I’m opening up (on this incident) now. If you deny this incident as being true, and maintain that ‘The girl is lying, this is not my poem,’ I’m ready to prove that this poem is yours and that you had tortured my friend. I know that you know that this is your poem. You can neither hide this nor forget this; neither can you run away nor hide. Do not forget.”

The woman also praised singer Chinmayi, who is one of the many women who have come out with allegations against the lyricist after the #MeToo movement picked up steam in india. “Chinmayi, hats off to you,” she praises, “It is only because of you that I’m now able to speak about this issue. To be frank, I’m ashamed that I did not speak out until now. I’ve become emboldened to open up only after seeing you speaking out. If we, women, all collectively speak of the abuse we have endured, the men cannot even sleep after hearing those. That is the truth. Let’s all fight for truth and for the women who have been harassed. Let’s ensure that justice prevails.”

Self-motivation For Achieving Excellence

The common observation is that some individuals, though only a handful, excel in various spheres of life while the majority lead ordinary lives with hardly any accolades to their credit. Is it mere luck or random functioning of life? It is neither of the two.

Achievement of excellence in any field is the cumulative corollary of several attributes like determination, focus, diligence, intelligence, self-confidence, perseverance, patience and passion. But the most important factor conducive to attaining excellence is self-motivation. No amount of external goading, however persistent, can veer us towards excellence. When we are constantly driven by an insatiable yearning to live life at its highest dimension by delivering our best, this kind of passion helps us realise our highest potential, which if not tapped remains dormant.

Yet, the path to excellence is circuitous and arduous. Stringent self-discipline needs to be adhered to. The tougher we are on ourselves, the easier is the road to excellence. In essence, achievers refuse to remain complacent by being ensconced in a life of mediocrity. They are risk-takers. To excel, we have to summon the courage and confidence to step out of our comfort-zone and blaze a trail ahead amidst challenges and deterrents.

To achieve the extraordinary, we need to develop sharp focus; the sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus. It is this concentration upon the work at hand, this awareness of our efforts from moment to moment, that eventually leads to excellence. Conversely, if our focus is on the goal with an ego-centric attachment, our efforts along the path are distracted, anxiety-ridden and are consequently rendered feeble, resulting in failure.

Achieving excellence entails scrupulous planning, preparation and positive oriented thinking. We need to proceed in a methodical and organised way. Sustained commitment is required. Excellence comes from exercising responsibility and also being accountable. The long-term, larger goals should be judiciously sub-divided into smaller ones, lest our zest and focus wane. Small and quick incentives, en route, can be stepping-stones to the final goal. The goal should be clear, logical and well-defined.

Real excellence comes about when the spirit of competition with others ceases. Competing with others causes stress and an unnecessary dissipation of valuable time and energy, resulting in depleted output. Conversely, when we are in healthy competition with our own self, and strive to outdo our former self, excellence happens.

It is essential to consciously cultivate the habit of pitching in our best efforts in everything we do, whether they are trivial, mundane chores or big tasks. According to Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Moreover, when we choose to discover pleasure in our work, our performance enhances.

The entire route to excellence is profound and self-enhancing. In fact, it is gradual self-mastery. When we seek excellence, it becomes paramount to know our strengths and frailties. This is possible only when we know ourselves thoroughly. Meditation is a potent tool for effective self-communion. It is a time-tested method of developing one’s focus, memory and self-control. It calms and clears the mind, thereby empowering it. An agitated, cluttered mind is weak and unproductive. Once we are successfully tuned-in to our divine core and securely fastened to our moorings, excellence in inner and outer worlds becomes inevitable.

#MeToo gathers storm in K’wood: Director Susi Ganesan too named

Chennai: With the #Metoo movement gaining momentum,Tamil poetess and filmmaker Leena Manimekalai on Tuesday alleged that film director Susi Ganesan locked her in his car about 13 years ago and threatened her to accompany him to his apartment.

However the director trashed the charges, terming them as “outright, false and libellous,” adding he has filed a police complaint to prevent Manimekalai from spreading “slanderous” content in the social media. “I will be filing both civil and criminal defamation cases against her in court,” he said.

The accusation comes days after singer Chinmayi Sripaada accused lyricist Vairamuthu of misconduct days ago. The lyricist had denied the allegation.

Leena in a tweet said, “I am gathering courage to write more of my experiences. Let me start with this. Film director who locked me up in the car when I started as a television anchor is Susi Ganesan. Hope more voices join me to be heard. #metoo.”

She also gave a link to her February 20, 2017 Facebook post in which she had narrated her alleged ordeal, without naming the director. AGENCIES

RTI: MU wrongly failed 35k students in exams last year

As many as 35,000 students — or close to 36% of the over 97,000 who applied for revaluation of over 1.81 lakh answer papers — had been wrongly marked as failed in the Mumbai University examinations of 2017. These students cleared the bar after revaluation, revealed an RTI query.

A total of 97,313 applicants filed for revaluation, perhaps the largest student cohort in recent history, reflecting the fact that large numbers of candidates have begun to lose trust in the university’s assessment process. In the previous three years, between 2014 and 2016, approximately 73,000 students—or one in three—were wrongly failed in examinations conducted by the university, raising questions over the quality of evaluation.

When the summer session exams concluded, 49,596 students had doubts over the scores marked in their 85,068 answer books and they subsequently applied for revaluation. Of these, 16,739 cleared their exams.

Again, in the second half of 2017, a total of 47,717 candidates applied to get 76,086 scripts revalued. Of these, 18,254 cleared the exams after their answer books were reassessed.

During the first half of 2016, 16,934 of the 44,441 students who applied for revaluation cleared the exam, revealed the RTI query.

“Students taking the Mumbai University exam are losing faith in its assessment,” said RTI activist Vihar Durve. “While 80,000 candidates applied for revaluation in all of 2014, the number of disgruntled candidates had gone up to close to a lakh now,” he added.

The situation is more confounding for students who don’t receive revaluation results in time and are thus forced to appear for supplementary exams. In several cases, results of revaluation are declared after the students appear for supplementary exams. The university charges ₹500 for revaluation and ₹100 for a photocopy of answer books.

“The university should publish a model standard answer paper set and give it to paper-checkers and also publish the same on its website,” said Durve.

In an earlier RTI query, Durve had found that in 2012, 14,586 of the 68,653 students who applied for revaluation passed. In the first half of 2013, of 43,256 who applied, 10,509 cleared the exam.

MTC suspends driver, conductor who took detour

A Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) driver and conductor, who operated a government bus along an unscheduled route in Chennai, were suspended on Tuesday.

While they were scheduled to operate between Iyappanthangal and Sunguvarchatram (route 525B), checking squad found them operating between Poonamalle and Sriperumbudur (route 578).

While authorities said the crew acted on their own accord to earn additional incentives through ticket sales, suspended employees claimed that they followed their higher officials’ oral instruction and were left to face the consequence alone when caught red-handed.

Preliminary inquiries reveal that the bus was not operated along the scheduled route for more than two years and people residing in the areas had to bear the brunt of not getting adequate government bus services.

According to the original schedule, a total of five buses were to be operated along route number 525 (between Vadapalani and Sunguvarchatram). Each bus is approved to take up at least five trips a day and of this, one bus is operated as a cut service between Iyyapanthangal and Sunguvarchatram (525B). This cut service was not operated as per schedule and was instead operated along route number 578, which attracts more passengers comparatively.

A senior MTC official claimed that the crew violated the norm and operated along a different route with the motive of earning more incentive via ticket sales. A MTC bus crew earns ₹1.3 to 1.5 paise as incentive for every ₹100 collected through daily ticket sales.

Rejecting this, Sampath, the suspended driver, told TOI that they acted upon Anbarasu, their branch manager's instruction and he assured to cover up the issue if they were caught. "But Anbarasu refused to step in and shifted the blame only towards us," he added.

Trip delay: MTC conductor in soup

In a similar incident, an MTC conductor was suspended for completing his trip 15 minutes late. R Yuvaraj, from T Nagar depot, working along route 72C (Thiruverkadu to T Nagar via Koyambedu), reached the depot to handover the cash collected through ticket sales around 5 pm instead of 4.45 pm. MTC workers called the move irrational as it was impossible to follow timings strictly because of the traffic in the city.

The fever season has begun. Hospitals across the city are getting patients with various viral infections including dengue and respiratory ailments.

The first official announcement about a spike in fever cases came on Tuesday after health minister C Vijaya Baskar visited the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where 28 patients have been admitted with fever.

“Eight patients have tested positive for dengue. They came here on time and are being treated for the viral disease,” he said.

At least eight more children who were tested positive for dengue are undergoing treatment at Institute of Child Health in Egmore. ICH director Dr A T Arasar Seeralar said the hospital has 34 children with fever.

The directorate of public health has been recording a spike in fever cases in three districts – Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram –in the past three weeks. “We have seen about 100 dengue cases from these districts. Most of the patients are treated as out-patients and some of them required admissions. The disease is not as severe as it was in 2017, but we are beginning to see an increase,” said director of public health Dr K Kolandaisamy.

On Tuesday, officials from the directorate met senior administrators from various departments such as police, transport, education, revenue and finance at the Chennai Collectorate. “We have asked them to clean up their campuses thoroughly, remove plastic cups, coconut shells, and discarded vehicles and scrap, so water does not stagnate and allow breeding of mosquito,” he said.

The directorate has also been sending IEC materials to doctors’ bodies for early diagnosis and management of all fever cases, particularly dengue, malaria, H1N1, typhoid and scrub typhus. “We tell doctors not to ignore any fever and monitor patients till they recover completely. Smaller hospitals and nursing homes have been told to refer patients to tertiary centres if there are chances of complications,” the minister said.

Private hospitals have also reported an increase in fever cases, most of them children. Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust hospital has around 10 cases of dengue. In many hospitals, 40% of intensive care units are filled with infants suffering from respiratory diseases. “Most of these are severe viral infections. Some usual virus, known for causing common cold, is making some infants so sick that they are on ventilator,” said intensivist Dr Bala Ramachandan.

3kg gold worth ₹98.5L seized by customs at Chennai airport

Customs officials at Anna International Airport on Tuesday thwarted four cases of attempted gold smuggling.

Much of the 3kg of the gold seized came from Masthan Khan, 53, a resident of Kadappa who arrived from Kuwait via Goa by Air India flight AI-976. On suspicion, Customs officials intercepted Khan near the exit gate and found he was carrying five gold cut bits, five crude gold kadas and assorted jewellery, together weighing 1.7kg and worth ₹55 lakh.

The passenger said the gold wasn’t his; he had found the gold in the tissue paper compartment in the rear toilet of the flight. He was arrested.

In the other three cases, passengers Mohammad Fazizd, 26, of Chennai, Sheikh Hussain Ashraf Ali, 33, of Trichy and Ismail Sheikh Dawood, 22, of Sivaganga, who had arrived from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia flight AK11, were intercepted on suspicion of bringing gold.

In their check-in baggage were several ceiling fans. One carried 11 of them and the other two four each. On breaking the fans, the officials found gold inside the motors in the form of strips and hollow rods weighing 1.25kg.

Another 30g gold bits were also found on each of them. Officials estimated the worth of 1.34kg gold recovered from the trio at ₹43.32 lakh.

All of them have been booked under the Customs Act, 1962.In all four cases 3 kg gold worth ₹98.5 lakh was recovered.

HC asks MTC to hand over ₹15L to accident victim's kin

: The Madras High Court has directed the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to provide compensation of ₹15 lakh to the dependents of a man, who was run over by an MTC bus in 2011.

The bench comprising Justice Sasidharan and Justice Subramanian ordered that ₹9.56 lakh and ₹3 lakh should be provided as compensation to the deceased’s wife and parent, respectively, with an interest of 7.5 per cent within eight weeks.

The victim Kumaresan, who was standing on the pavement, was mowed over by an MTC bus due to the ignorance of a driver near the Central Railway Station in 2011.

Thereafter, his wife and parent approached the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Chennai and filed a case demanding compensation to the tune of ₹1 crore.

The tribunal awarded ₹12.47 lakh as compensation considering the family circumstance of deceased. However, MTC filed an appeal in the Madras High Court over the award.

Tickets for Coimbatore-Salem stretch on Shatabdi Express to be cheaper

In order to boost patronage on Shatabdi Express, Southern Railway has decided to slash rates for journeys between Coimbatore and Salem on two services. The reduction in fares would be on train numbers12243 and 12244 on an experimental basis for six months.

Currently, a Coimbatore-Salem ticket, excluding catering charges, dynamic fare and GST, costs ₹370 and with other charges, it costs ₹550- ₹600 for the164-km distance.

A September 24 railway board circular allowed Southern Railway to slash the price to ₹345, excluding catering charges and GST, but said the flexi fare system would not be applicable.

Railway sources said they sought a further reduction to around ₹300 to make it competitive in comparison with bus tickets.

“Compared to buses, people prefer trains, especially a premium service like Shatabdi that runs at a speed of 70 kmph. The comfort offered by a train is better than that of a state transport or private bus. However, pricing of the ticket is only reason driving people away from trains,” a senior official said.

Seats on Shatabdi Express trains are going empty mainly because of the high fare. This is a problem at the all India level.

As a trial, a similar exercise was carried out on the Bengaluru-Mysuru stretch of the Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru Shatabdi Express. Railways found there were many takers for the Chennai-Bengaluru stretch, but not as many for the last leg. This was because the tickets were costlier than an airconditioned bus and no major difference in journey time.

Reduction in ticket price for the Bengaluru-Mysuru stretch resulted in 63% growth in passenger bookings on the section, railway sources said.

The Railway Board has also advised Southern Railway to conduct a fortnightly review of the utilisation of the seats on the Salem-Coimbatore section after bringing in this reduction.

Similar proposals should also be introduced in other trains after coming up with detailed proposals, it said.

Kerala braces for a tense Wednesday when Sabarimala opens for the first time since the historic Supreme Court verdict allowing women aged between 10 and 50 to pray at the hill temple, with hundreds of protesters opposing the verdict determined to have their way. On Tuesday, hours before the temple opens, agitators stopped and checked vehicles, including state-run buses, at Nilackal and forcibly turned back girls and women in the age group.

Nilackal is 20km from Sabarimala and a major point where pilgrims disembark. With the LDF government hesitating to send enough women police personnel to Sabarimala to avoid provocation, the small police contingent here was of little use.

Scores of protesters, including women from nearby areas and those belonging to various right-wing organisations, have been camping at Nilackal for the past few days. Many of them have threatened “suicide” rather than allow young women to enter Sabarimala. On Tuesday morning, protesters stopped a bus carrying a group of students and forced the girls in the group to turn back. There were similar incidents in the evening too. There were reports that some women journalists were also blocked from proceeding further.

The LDF government has maintained from the start that it will ensure that the SC verdict is implemented. On Tuesday, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan reiterated it in the strongest possible terms. “I have heard about some incidents at Nilackal. This will not be tolerated and nobody will be allowed to take the law into their hands. No one will be allowed to inspect vehicles carrying devotees to Nilackal,” Vijayan said.

Ironically, at Nilackal, the teams stopping women mostly comprised of tribal women of Attathodu colony located on the foot of the Sabarimala mountain range. Some women devotees struggled hard to curtail their enthusiasm for the vigilante duty.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan made it clear on Tuesday that the state government would not file any review petition against the SC order that allowed women of all ages to enter Sabarimala temple. “All protection would be given to the devotees who come to Sabarimala. The government is committed to implement the Supreme Court verdict and no one will be allowed to protest against the order at the shrine,” the CM said.P 14

Tribal woman climbs tree, threatens to kill self

The first batch of women cops reached the spot only around 2pm. By then, the woman devotees had already caused much trouble. Women cops in the district were directed to rush to Nilackal following incidents of “vigilantism”.

“We received the message around 10.30am. We were all engaged in other duties and hence could not prepare for this,” said a woman cop, standing in heavy rain without an umbrella or a rain coat. She was among the cops who stood beside the group of devotees that checked the vehicles to ensure that the passengers in the vehicle were not harassed by the vigilantes.

More dramatic scenes followed when a tribal woman, who was staging a protest inside a makeshift tent, climbed a tree nearby and threatened to commit suicide by putting a noose around her neck. She did this sudden act after word came that the government had decided to convene a meeting of government officials at Sabarimala, which may also include woman officials. Police acted swiftly and brought her down and removed her from the spot.

Rahul Easwar calls for 125-hr prayer meet

Rahul Easwar of Thazhamon thanthri family called for a 125-hour prayer meet from October 17 to 25 at different places on way to Sabarimala, including at Pamba, Nilakkal, Erumeli and on the jungle path leading to Sannidhanam.

The campaign intends to defend the customs and rituals of Sabarimala, he said, adding that the campaign will be strictly legal and follow Gandhian methods so that it will not have any adverse impact on the review petitions. TNN

Fault in AC system hits AI Singapore flight

Passengers of an Air India Express flight to Singapore were stranded on Sunday evening due to a fault in the air-conditioning system of the aircraft. The flight with 117 passengers on board was ready to take off when the fault was detected.

Following this, passengers were asked to get off the plane. Some of them were accommodated in a hotel, while a few others left for their homes and opted to travel on different dates.

The aircraft later flew to Chennai empty in the night and from thereon to Thiruvananthapuram to rectify the problem.

Around 60 passengers, who were stranded on Sunday, were accommodated in the Monday’s Singapore-bound Air India Express flight from here.

‘Go and die’ does not amount to abetment of suicide: HC

Merely asking someone to “go and die” would not amount to abetment of suicide, the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) has ruled.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh made the observation while quashing lower court proceedings initiated against a woman and her mother for abetment of suicide of the former’s husband, who, in his suicide note, had blamed them for his decision to take the extreme step.

The judge said that merely because the duo had told the deceased that “he can go and die”, that in itself was not sufficient to constitute an offence under Section 306 ( abetment of suicide) under the Indian Penal Code.

It is alleged that the daughter was in a relationship with another man before her marriage in 2008.

The man came to know about the affair only after the marriage. When he questioned his wife, she was said to have left home. Her mother allegedly called him and told him to die as he was not capable of supporting his wife. His wife too called him and said the same.

Following a complaint from the man’s mother, the Madurai police booked the duo under Section 306 of the IPC.

College suspends girl for marking Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary

In yet another instance of growing intolerance to freedom of expression on TN campuses, a student of the Government Arts and Science College in the city was suspended indefinitely allegedly for celebrating the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh at the college.

The state has been coming down hard on public protests in the past two years, resorting to harsh laws like Sedition, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Goondas Act and NSA.

S Malathi, a first year MA (History) student, was suspended from October 1 for celebrating Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary with other students for 45 minutes on September 28.

“On that day, the student and her classmates sought the permission of the principal to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh at the college level. Denying permission, the principal directed them to conduct it at the department level after obtaining permission from the head of the department,” said an authority from the college.

As the HoD was on leave, the students sought permission from the tutor who refused, he said, but the students went ahead.

“It was not a huge celebration. A few students remembered the late leader and spoke a few words about him. The gathering dispersed in less than an hour,” said Malathi.

Many students’ organizations condemned the suspension of Malathi.

Principal K Chitra said an inquiry would be conducted on October 22 and a decision taken.

DVAC goes slow on FIRs after anti-graft act mandates govt nod

After filing cases at a frenetic pace over the last 18 months, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anticorruption (DVAC) has hit a speed bump after the Prevention of Corruption Act was amended in the last Parliament session.

Publicly available data on cases registered by DVAC shows that only a handful have been filed in the last two months. In the nine wings of the central range, which covers Chennai city and the neighbouring districts, the last case filed was on September 5.

This is mainly because the amended act states that before booking a case, the anti-corruption agency needs to take the approval of the government. Section 17 of the act has made it mandatory to take permission from the government even for booking cases against retired employees.

However, in cases pertaining to traps, where government employees are caught red-handed taking bribes, the DVAC doesn’t need permission from the government. But it would need permission to file a separate case of disproportionate assets – for instance, the DVAC has arrested a motor vehicle inspector in Villupuram for bribes and discovered several kg of gold and silver but had not yet booked a disproportionate assets case. Sources in the government said this is one of the reasons why the DVAC’s activities have become slower.

For instance, the DVAC had in February received a petition from the then higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal regarding a Rs 63-crore scam in the purchase of marksheets by Anna University. Sources said the DVAC was on the verge of filing a case after conducting inquiries against the then controller of examinations, G V Uma, who is also the prime accused in the re-evaluation scam.

A fresh case, however, has not been booked yet as the DVAC is waiting for permission from the government.

Sources said the DVAC had also conducted detailed inquiries pertaining to several scams in many of the 23 state universities much before governor Banwarilal Purohit flagged the issue of cash-for-VC posts and was waiting to file FIRs.

The agency has already booked three former VCs in alleged bribery cases. Vigilance commissioner Mohan Pyare admitted that the delay in booking cases was because sanction from the government was awaited.

Court orders status quo on recruitment of nurses by MRB

The Madras high court has ordered status quo on the notification issued by the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB) for appointment of more than 900 nurses to state-run hospitals and health centres.

Justice R Mahadevan passed the interim order on a plea moved by G Udhayakumar, a male nurse who has qualified in the necessary technical exam and had six years of work experience. The court posted the plea to October 29 for further hearing.

According to the petitioner, on September 12 the MRB issued a notification appointing nurses based on the selection list dated April 15, 2015. The petitioner submitted that originally on April 19, 2015, the board issued a notification inviting applications from eligible candidates for 7,243 vacancies throughout Tamil Nadu. It was stated that the selected candidates would be absorbed into regular service after two years, subject to vacancies based on seniority and eligibility.

While so, a list of 498 nurses whose services were regularised was published on July 15, 2016. On October 21, 2016, services of 182 more candidates were regularised. On September 12, 2017, services of 950 nurses were regularised from the April 2015 selection list followed by another notification dated September 12 this year, the petitioner said.

Claiming that every year about 40,000 nurses graduate in the state, he contended the authorities cannot ask the candidates who qualify every year to wait till the last person who is qualified after the notification dated April 12, 2015 is appointed. The petitioner wanted the court to call for the records of September 2018 notification and quash it.

Pensioners denied med allowance of ₹1k by rly

Many retired railway employees whose dependants or they themselves are suffering from chronic diseases like arthritis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes or AIDS are allegedly being denied ₹1,000 of fixed medical allowance (FMA) by the Southern Railway in spite of the rules allowing it.

Petitions to this effect have been filed before the S Railway headquarters in Chennai during the pension adalat last month, sources said.

As per the rules, retired employees were given ₹100 FMA from December 1, 1997. This was to enable employees living outside city limits to travel to railway hospitals. However, the then rule was that those getting FMA were not eligible for outpatient facilities in railway hospitals and the employee should be 2.5km from the nearest railway hospital. From July 2017, FMA was increased to ₹1,000.

In 2009, the railway board came out with a circular stating that pensioners or their dependants who suffered from chronic diseases were eligible for the FMA as well as outpatient facilities at the railway hospitals. An undertaking was to be provided by the pensioners.

However, the modified undertaking form to ensure that the dependants or pensioners can avail the outpatient facility and FMA in case of chronic diseases was given only in late 2011 through the RB circular 83/2011.

Lower-level officials of the personnel department have taken a stance that employees who retired before this undertaking form was given would not be eligible for the FMA. Sources said this stance was taken without approval from the top authorities, thereby denying rightful benefits to employees who had put in more than 30 years of service.

“In my case, I can afford the medical treatment and ₹1,000 does not matter a lot. However, there are many retired employees suffering from chronic diseases for whom the allowance is a major relief. Some of them may be living very far from the Perambur railway hospital and have to shell out ₹300 to ₹400 one-way taxi fare,” said a pensioner, declining to be identified.

Southern railway’s chief personnel officer was not available for comment.

HC rejects appeal from nurse seeking return of certificates

Nursing is an ‘art and science’, said Madras high court, decrying a woman nurse’s bid to avoid serving the two-year bond period with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. The court then refused to order CMC to return her certificates.

S Austin Blessie had joined BSc nursing course as a candidate sponsored by CSI Diocese of Vellore. While joining, she had entered into a Sponsorship Obligation Agreement, by which, she was required to serve for at least two years in a diocese institution. After the completion of the course, however, , she was not willing to fulfill the agreement and instead wanted to go for higher studies. She then asked the management to return all her certificates. After it was turned down, she moved the high court, where a single judge upheld the hospital’s decision. Blessie then filed an appeal.

Dismissing her appeal, and wondering whether her character resembled that of a bull in a China shop, a division bench of Justice S Vimala and Justice S Ramathilagam said, “The appellant thinks money is a key motivating factor. But when the situation improves and money becomes sufficient or abundant, it loses its importance. Security, good working conditions, opportunity for promotion, mental satisfaction, status, etc., usually become more important. Admittedly, the petitioner joined the BSc Nursing course, sponsored by CSI Diocese, Vellore and entered into the Sponsorship Obligation Agreement. Under the circumstances, the writ appeal is liable to be dismissed.”

Upholding the decision of single judge that the writ petitioner had acted in a manner contrary to the terms of the contract and therefore, it is not open to the petitioner to invoke the writ jurisdiction and the right vested with the CMC Vellore under Article 30 of the Constitution cannot be taken away by the writ court, the bench dismissed the appeal.

கடந்த 8.8.2016-ல் சேலத்திலிருந்து சென்னை நோக்கி வந்த எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயிலில், 5 கோடியே 78 லட்சம் ரூபாய் கொள்ளையடிக்கப்பட்டது. கடந்த இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு, இந்த வழக்கில் துப்பு துலக்கிய சிபிசிஐடி போலீஸார், மத்தியப்பிரதேசம், ரட்லத்தைச் சேர்ந்த தினேஷ், ரோஹன்பார்தி ஆகிய இருவரையும் கடந்த 12-ம் தேதி கைதுசெய்தனர். இந்த கொள்ளைச் சம்பவத்தில், 5 பேருக்கு நேரடியாகவும் 8 பேருக்கு மறைமுகமாகவும் தொடர்பு இருப்பது தெரியவந்தது. மீதமுள்ளவர்களை போலீஸார் தேடிவருகின்றனர். கொள்ளையடிக்கப்பட்ட 5.78 கோடி செல்லாத ரூபாய் நோட்டுகளை எப்படி மாற்றினார்கள் என்பதை சிபிசிஐடி போலீஸார் விசாரித்தபோது, திடுக்கிடும் தகவல்கள் வெளியாகின.


இதுகுறித்து சிபிசிஐடி போலீஸார் கூறுகையில், ``சேலம் மண்டலத்தில் உள்ள பல்வேறு வங்கிகளில் இருந்து ரூ.342 கோடி பழைய நோட்டுகள் கடந்த 2016-ம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 8-ம் தேதி, சேலம் -சென்னை எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயிலில் சென்னைக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டன. ரூபாய் நோட்டுகள், 226 மரப் பெட்டிகளில் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. பணப் பெட்டிகள் வைக்கப்பட்ட ரயில்பெட்டியின் கதவு ‘சீல்’ வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. ஆகஸ்ட் 9-ம் தேதி, ரயில் பெட்டியின் சீல் உடைக்கப்பட்டு திறக்கப்பட்டபோது, 5 கோடியே 78 லட்சம் ரூபாய் கொள்ளைபோயிருந்தது. இந்த வழக்கை முதலில் ரயில்வே போலீஸார் விசாரித்தனர். 11.8.2016-ல் எழும்பூர் போலீஸாரிடமிருந்து எங்களுக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது.

கடந்த இரண்டரை ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக பல கோணங்களில் விசாரணை நடத்தினோம். நாசாவின் உதவியோடு நடத்தப்பட்ட விசாரணையில் சின்ன சேலத்திலிருந்து விருத்தாச்சலம் ஆகிய ரயில் நிலையங்களுக்கிடையே கொள்ளை நடந்தது எங்களுக்குத் தெரியவந்தது. உடனே, கொள்ளையர்களைத் தேடியபோது செல்போன் சிக்னல், நாசாவிடமிருந்து கிடைத்த புகைப்படங்கள் எங்களுக்கு இந்த வழக்கை துப்பு துலக்க முக்கிய துருப்புச் சீட்டாக அமைந்தது. மத்தியப்பிரதேசத்தில் உள்ள பார்தி என்ற இனத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் இந்தக் கொள்ளைச் சம்பவத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளது கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. உடனடியாக அங்கு சென்ற போலீஸார், கொள்ளைக் கும்பல் குறித்து ரகசியமாக விசாரணை நடத்தினோம். விசாரணையில் இந்தக் கொள்ளையில் மோஹர்சிங் என்பவரின் தலைமையில் 5 பேர் ஈடுபட்டது தெரியவந்தது. அவர்கள்குறித்து விசாரித்தபோது, மோஹர்சிங் மற்றும் அவரின் கூட்டாளிகள் குணா, மாவட்ட மத்திய சிறையில் வேறு வழக்குகளில் கைதாகியிருக்கும் தகவல் கிடைத்தது. ஆனால் தினேஷ், ரோஹன் பார்தி ஆகியோர் தலைமறைவாக இருப்பது தெரியவந்தது.

மத்தியப்பிரதேச போலீஸாரின் உதவியோடு அவர்களை நாங்கள் பிடித்தோம். அவர்களிடம் விசாரித்தபோது, ரயிலில் பணம் கொண்டு செல்லும் தகவல் கிடைத்ததும் மோஹர்சிங் தலைமையில் கொள்ளையடிக்க திட்டமிட்டுள்ளனர். ரயிலின் மேற்கூரையில் ஏறிய 5 பேரும் சின்ன சேலத்திலிருந்து விருத்தாசலம் இடையே கொள்ளையடித்துவிட்டு தப்பவும் முடிவுசெய்துள்ளனர். அதன்படி நாங்கள் இருவரும் ரயிலின் மேற்கூரையில் துளைபோட்ட பிறகு, பெட்டிக்குள் இறங்கி பணத்தைக் கொள்ளையடித்தோம். பிறகு, விருதாச்சலம் ரயில் நிலையத்தின் அருகே கூடாரமிட்டுத் தங்கியிருந்த எங்களின் கூட்டாளிகளிடம் பணத்தைக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு ரயிலிலிருந்து குதித்து தப்பிவிட்டோம் என்று கூறியுள்ளனர். இந்த கொள்ளைச் சம்பவத்தில் 13 பேர் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். மீதமுள்ள 11 பேரையும் கைதுசெய்ய நடவடிக்கை எடுத்துவருகிறோம். சிறையிலிருக்கும் மோஹர்சிங்கிடம் விசாரித்தால் கூடுதல் தகவல் கிடைக்கும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம்" என்றனர்.



சிபிசிஐடி போலீஸ் உயரதிகாரி ஒருவர் கூறுகையில், ``கொள்ளை நடந்த ரயில் பெட்டியிலிருந்த கைரேகைகளுடன் தினேஷ், ரோஹன் பார்தி ஆகியோரின் கைரேகைகளும் ஒத்துப்போய் உள்ளன. கொள்ளையடித்த செல்லாத ரூபாய் நோட்டுக்களை மத்தியப்பிரதேசத்தில் சொத்துகளாக வாங்கியுள்ளதாக எங்களிடம் சிக்கிய தினேஷ், ரோஹன் பார்தி கூறியுள்ளனர். மேலும், செல்லாத ரூபாய் நோட்டுக்களை வங்கி அதிகாரிகளின் உதவியோடு மாற்றியதாகவும் அவர்கள் கூறினர். சொத்துகளை மீட்க சட்டரீதியாக நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும். மேலும் கொள்ளைச் சம்பவத்தில் தொடர்புடையவர்கள்குறித்த பட்டியல் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதில், ரயிலில் பணம் கொண்டுசெல்லும் தகவலைக் கூறியவர்கள் முதல், பணத்தை மாற்றிக் கொடுத்தவர்கள் வரை உள்ளனர்.

8.8.2016-ல், 342 கோடி ரூபாய் சேலத்திலிருந்து சென்னைக்கு ரயிலில் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டது. 9.8.2016-ல் ரூ.5.78 கோடி கொள்ளைபோனது கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. உடனடியாக எழும்பூர் போலீஸார் வழக்குபதிவு செய்தனர். 11.8.2016-ல் சிபிசிஐடி-க்கு வழக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. இந்த வழக்கு சிபிசிஐடி போலீஸாருக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டு ஓராண்டுகளாக எந்தவித முன்னேற்றமும் இல்லை. போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகள் அம்ரேஷ் புஜாரி, சிபிசிஐடி-க்கு மாற்றப்பட்ட பிறகு, கிடப்பில் கிடந்த ரயில் கொள்ளை வழக்கை தொழில்நுட்ப யுக்திகளைக் கொண்டு விசாரித்தார். மத்திய உளவுப்பிரிவு மற்றும் என்ஐஏ போலீஸாரின் உதவியையும் சிபிசிஐடி போலீஸார் நாடினர். சிபிசிஐடி கூடுதல் டிஜிபி அமரேஷ் பூஜாரி, ஐஜி ஸ்ரீதர் மேற்பார்வையில், எஸ்பி பிரவீன்குமார் அபிநபு தலைமையில் ஏடிஎஸ்பி செந்தில்குமரன், டிஎஸ்பி கிருஷ்ணன், எஸ்ஐக்கள் சாஸ்தா இந்துசேகரன், சாமிக்கண்ணு மற்றும் தலைமைக் காவலர் தண்டபாணி ஆகியோர் இரவும் பகலாகப் புலனாய்வு செய்தனர். மேலும், சிபிசிஐடியில் பணியாற்றிய ஐபிஎஸ் அதிகாரிகள் தாமரைக்கண்ணன், மகேஷ்குமார் அகர்வால் உள்ளிட்ட உயரதிகாரிகள், இந்த வழக்கில் தீவிரமாகக் களம் இறங்கினர். நெல்லை துணை கமிஷனராக இருந்த அமித்குமார் சிங் சிறப்பு பணிக்காக சேலம் வரவழைக்கப்பட்டு, ரயில் கொள்ளை குறித்து ஆய்வு நடத்தினர். போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகளின் சிறப்பான புலனாய்வில், பார்தி இனக் கொள்ளையர்கள் சிக்கிக்கொண்டனர்.

'மீ டூ'... கடந்த சில தினங்களாக இணைய உலகத்தை பரபரப்புக்குள்ளான வார்த்தையாக மாறியிருக்கிறது.

பாலிவுட் நடிகை தனுஸ்ரீ தத்தா, பிரபல பாலிவுட் நடிகர் நானா படேகர் மீது பத்து ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு அளித்த பாலியல் குற்றச்சாட்டுக்கு எழுந்த எதிர்வினைகளைத் தொடர்ந்து திரைப்படத்துறை, பத்திரிகைத் துறை என பல துறைகளைச் சேர்ந்த பெண்கள் பலரும் தங்களுக்கு ஏற்பட்ட பாலியல் வன்முறைகள் குறித்த பதிவுகளை சமூக வலைதளங்களில் பதிவிட்டு வருகின்றனர். அந்த வகையில் 'மீ டூ' பெண்களுக்கு எதிரான பாலியல் வன்முறைகளுக்கு எதிரான இணைய இயக்கமாக இந்தியாவில் மாறி இருக்கிறது.

இந்தியாவில் தற்போது அறிமுகமாகியிருக்கிற 'மீ டூ ' இயக்கம்... கிட்டத்தட்ட 12 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னரே அமெரிக்காவில் வலுவாகப் பேசப்பட்ட விவாதமாக இருந்தது.

உண்மையைக் கூற வேண்டும் என்றால் நாம் நமது சமூகத்தில் இந்த விவாதத்தை மிகத் தாமதமாகவே தொடங்கி இருக்கிறோம்.

2006 ஆம் ஆண்டு அமெரிக்காவின் சமூக ஆர்வலரான தாரானா பர்க் என்ற பெண்மணி, பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்களால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பொருளாதாரத்தில் பின்தங்கிய பெண்களுக்கு ஆதரவாகப் பல குரல்கள் உள்ளன என்பதை உணர்த்தும் வகையில் 2006 ஆம் ஆண்டு #METOO இயக்கத்தை ஆரம்பித்தார்.

இதன் தாக்கமே தற்போது இந்தியாவில் பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்களைப் பொதுவெளியில் துணிந்து பேசுவதற்கான வாய்ப்புகளைப் பலருக்கும் ஏற்படுத்தி இருக்கிறது.

இந்தப் பாலியல் குற்றச்சாட்டுகளை ஒரு பார்வையாளராக அந்தப் புகார்களின் வட்டத்துக்கு வெளியே இருந்து பார்க்கும்போது பல விதமான விமர்சனங்களும், கேள்விகளும் எழுவது ஒரு சராசரி மனிதனின் இயல்பு.

ஏன் அந்தப் பெண்கள் இவ்வளவு நாட்கள், இவ்வளவு வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு இந்தக் குற்றச்சாட்டை பொதுவெளியில் கூறுகிறார்கள்? ஏன் அவர்கள் அந்தத் தவறுகள் நேர்ந்த தருணத்தில் எதிர்வினை ஆற்றவில்லை என்று பல கேள்விகள் எழுப்பப்படுகின்றன.

இன்னொரு புறம், பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும்தான் பாலியல் பிரச்சினைகள் ஏற்படுகின்றனவா? ஆண்கள் இம்மாதிரியான பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்களால் பாதிக்கப்படவில்லையா? அவர்கள் ஏன் இதைப் பொதுவெளியில் கூற மறுக்கிறார்கள் போன்ற கேள்விகளையும் ஆங்காங்கே காண முடிகிறது.

இக்கேள்விகளை இந்து தமிழ் இணையதளம் சார்பாக இலக்கியம், ஊடகம், தகவல் தொழில்நுட்பம் சார்ந்து இயங்கும் ஆண்கள் சிலரிடம் முன் வைத்தோம்.

முதலில் இது வரவேற்கப்பட வேண்டியது. ஏன் இவ்வளவு வருடங்கள் கழித்து இப்பெண்கள் இப்புகாரைக் கூறுகிறார்கள் என்று கேட்பது அறியாமையின் வெளிப்பாடு மட்டுமே.

அந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் அப்பெண் இதனைப் பொதுவெளியில் கூறுவதற்கான வாய்ப்பை சமூகமாகிய நாம் வழங்கவில்லை என்பதுதான் உண்மை. இதில் விளிம்பு நிலையில் உழைக்கும் சமூகத்தில் உள்ள பெண்களை உற்று கவனித்தால் புரியும். உதாரணத்துக்கு ஒரு மீன் விற்கும் பெண்மணியை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். தன்னிடம் தவறாக நடந்துகொண்ட பேருந்து நடத்துநரிடம் அப்பெண் தைரியத்துடன் அவரை எதிர்கொண்டு நடத்துநரின் தவறை உணர்த்திய சம்பவத்தை நான் நேரில் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன்.

இவர்களைப் போன்ற பெண்கள் இயல்பாகவே இந்தச் சிக்கலான சமூகக் கட்டமைப்பில் வாழக் கற்றுக் கொண்டுள்ளதுடன் தங்களைப் பாதுகாக்கவும் கற்றுக் கொண்டுள்ளனர். அவர்களிடம் நாம் தைரியத்தை உருவாக்க வேண்டியதில்லை.

ஆனால், இதற்கு அப்பால் ஒரு மேல்நிலை வர்க்கம் உள்ளது. அவர்களுக்கு இந்தச் சமூகம், ஆண்களுக்குப் பிறகுதான் நீ என்று கற்பிக்கப்பட்ட கலாச்சார அச்சத்தினால் அவர்களில் பலர் தங்களுக்கு நேர்வதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார்கள். பிறகு தன்னைப் போன்ற பெண் ஒருவர் பாதிக்கப்பட்டதை வெளியில் கூறும்போது அவர்களும் இணைந்து கொள்கிறார்கள். இதில் குற்றம் சொல்ல என்ன இருக்கிறது?

’மீ டூ ’ இந்தியாவைப் பொறுத்தவரை பணியிடங்கள் சார்ந்த பிரச்சினையாக மட்டும் பார்க்கப்படுகிறது. பணியிடங்களுக்கு அப்பால் நமது குடும்பங்களில் உள்ள பிரச்சினைகள் இங்கு எழுப்பப்படவில்லை. நான் நீண்டகாலமாக விளிம்பு நிலையில் உள்ள குடும்பங்களுடன் பாலியல் சார்ந்த உரையாடலை நடத்தி இருக்கிறேன். அவர்களின் பெரும்பாலான பெண்கள் தங்களது குடும்பத்திலுள்ள சொந்த அப்பாவாலும், அண்ணனாலும், தம்பியாலும், மாமாவாலும், சித்தப்பாவாலும் பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தலுக்கு உள்ளாகி இருக்கிறார்கள்.

இது உண்மையா? பொய்யா? என்று ஆராய்வதற்கு முன்னர், இது உண்மையாக இருக்கலாம் என்ற வாய்ப்பை நான் ஏன் நம்புகிறேன். ஏனென்றால், நமது சாதி மற்றும் மதம் சார்ந்த ஆணாதிக்கச் சமூகத்தில் இம்மாதிரியான பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்கள் நியாயப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன.

இங்கு பெண் என்பவள் இராண்டாம் பால்...இன்னும் வெளிப்படையாகக் கூறினால் இரண்டாம் பால் என்பதைவிட பெண் என்பவள் பாலியல் பண்டமாகத்தான் நம் சமூகத்தில் பார்க்கப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாள். கடந்த சில வருடங்களில் ஐரோப்பிய சமூகத்தில் பாலினம் சார்ந்த ஏற்ற இறக்கங்கள் நடந்துள்ளன. ஆனால் நமது குடும்பங்கள் நிறைந்த சமூகத்தில் அம்மாதிரியான எந்த மாற்றமும் ஏற்படவில்லை.

இங்கு ஜனநாயகமும், சம உரிமையும் பெண்ணுக்குக் கிடையாது. ஐரோப்பா போன்ற கண்டங்களில் நிர்வாக தளங்களில் தலைமைப் பணிகளில் பெண்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் இங்கு ஒரு ஊடகத்தில் கூட ஒரு பெண் ஆசிரியரை நீங்கள் காண முடியாது. வெறும் தொகுப்பாளராகவும் காட்சிப் பொருளாகாவும் மட்டுமே பெண்கள் பல நேரங்களில் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்படுகிறார்கள்.

பெண்களின் முழு ஆற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்துவதற்கான வாய்ப்பை நாம் இன்னும் ஏற்படுத்தித் தரவில்லை. பெண்களுக்கு எதிரான அநீதி ஒன்று மிக இயல்பான கட்டமைப்பில் நமது சமூகத்தில் இருந்துகொண்டே இருக்கிறது.

பெண்களின் இந்தக் குற்றச்சாட்டுகளில் சில குறைவாகவோ அல்லது மிகைப்படுத்தியோ கூறப்பட்டிருக்கலாம். ஆனால், நமது சமூக அமைப்பில் இது நிச்சயம் நிகழக்கூடியதுதான் என்பதை மறுப்பதற்கில்லை.

ஆண்கள் தங்களுக்கு நேரும் பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்களைப் பொதுவெளியில் கூறாமல் இருப்பதற்கும் பாலியல் சமத்துவமின்மையே காரணம் என்று கூறுவேன். நம்மைப் பொறுத்தவரை ஆண் என்பவன் அதிகாரம் மிக்கவன். இது அவனது ஆண்மை தொடர்பான விஷயம். எடுத்துக்காட்டுக்கு தன்னைப் பெண் ஒருவர் கிண்டலடித்தால் தன் நண்பனிடமும் குடும்பத்தினரிடமும் அந்த ஆண் கூற நேர்ந்தால்..அடுத்து அவனை நோக்கி எழுப்பப்படும் கேள்வி ”நீ ஆம்பளையாடா?” இம்மாதிரியான கொடுமையான வன்முறைகள் நமது சமூகத்தில் ஆணை நோக்கி கட்டமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

உளவியல் ரீதியாக பெண்ணை விட ஆண் தான் நமது சமூகத்தில் பலவீனமாக இருக்கிறான். தனது தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையை மறைப்பதற்கு ஆண் தன்னை மேலானவன் என நினைத்துக் கொள்கிறான். அவனும் துன்பப்பட்டு..இந்தச் சமூகத்தையும் துன்பப்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான்.


நீலகண்டன்

இந்திய ஆண்கள் பலர் பெண்களைக் கவர்வதற்காக, அவன் பார்க்கும் சினிமாக்களில் காட்டும் நாயகனின் வடிவத்தை தனது வடிவமாக ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறார்கள். இங்கு மென்மையாகவும், தன்மையாகவும் பேசுபவர்கள் மதிப்புக்குரியவர்களாக பார்க்கப்படமாட்டர்கள். இவர்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை ஆண் என்பவன் குரலை உயர்த்தி ஒருபடி முன்னே இருக்க வேண்டும் . இதன் மூலமாக பெண்களைக் கவர பெரும்பாலான ஆண்கள் முற்படுகிறார்கள்.

தனித்துவமான தன்மையை ஆண்கள் வளர்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். இது பெண்களுக்கும் பொருந்தும். இந்த ஆண் என்ற கருத்தாக்கத்தை உளவியல் தன்மை கொண்டு உடைத்தெறிய வேண்டும் என்ற கட்டாயத்தில் நாம் இருக்கிறோம்.

இதன் மூலம் நமது சமூக அமைப்பில் நாம் ஒருபடி முன்னோக்கிச் செல்ல வேண்டும். உளவியல் ரீதியாக ஆண், பெண் இருவரிடத்திலும் நாம் பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்களை மறைக்கும் தன்மையை நீக்க வேண்டும்.

இந்த 'மீ டூ' பிரச்சாரத்தின் மூலம் ஆண் தங்களை சுய பரிசோதனை செய்து கொள்வதற்கு, தங்களை திருத்திக் கொள்வதற்கு ஒரு வாய்ப்பாக இருக்கும் என்று நம்புகிறேன். பாலியல் சார்ந்த புரிதல்கள் கல்வி மூலமாக உரையாடலாக மாற்றப்பட்டு விவாதிக்கப்படும்போது, இம்மாதிரியான தவறுகள் குறையும் என்று நம்புகிறேன்.

சுரேஷ்: காட்சி ஊடகச் செய்தியாளர்

'மீ டூ' பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல் குறித்தான பெண்களின் குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் நிச்சயம் வரவேற்கப்பட வேண்டிய ஒன்றுதான். வரும் காலங்களில் இம்மாதிரியான பிரச்சினைகள் ஏற்படும்போது அதனை எவ்வாறு எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பதற்கான தைரியத்தை இம்மாதிரியான பிரச்சாரங்கள் அளிக்கும் என்று நம்புகிறேன்.

ஆண்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை இதனை இரண்டு விதமாகப் பார்க்கலாம். பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்கள் இளைஞர்களைக் காட்டிலும் 18 வயதுக்குக் குறைவான சிறுவர்கள் ஆசிரியர்கள், உறவினர்களால் பாதிப்புக்குள்ளாகிறார்கள். இவர்களில் சிலர் இதுகுறித்து வெளியே கூறாமல் குழப்பம் மிகுந்த மனநிலையில் தனிமைக்குத் தள்ளப்படுகின்றனர். சிலர் தற்கொலையும் செய்து கொள்கின்றனர்.

இளைஞர்களை எடுத்துக்கொண்டால் அவர்களில் சிலர் இதனை ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறார்கள். சிலர் குடும்பச் சூழ்நிலையானாலும் இந்த சமூகம் கற்பித்த தவறான போதனைகளாலும் கூறாமல் சென்று விடுகிறார்கள். இந்த மனப்பான்மையில் மாற்றம் வேண்டும்.

’மீ டூ’ குறித்து சமூக வலைதளங்களில் எழுந்துள்ள விவாதம் நிச்சயம் ஆரோக்கியமானதுதான். ஆனால், குற்றம் சொல்பவரின் குரல்கள் ஒலிக்கப்படும்போதும், குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டவருடனான பதிலையும் பெற வேண்டியது இந்த விஷயத்தில் மிக முக்கியம்.

வெறும் பதிவுகளாக இதனைக் கடந்து செல்லாமல் அடுத்த கட்டத்தை நோக்கி இந்தப் பிரச்சாரத்தை எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டும்.

ஆண்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை பாலியல் சார்ந்த புகார்களை அவர்கள் ஏன் பொதுவெளியில் கூறுவது இல்லை என்றால்? நமது சமூகத்தைப் பொறுத்தவரை பெண்களுக்குத்தான் இதுகுறித்தான போதனைகள் வழங்கப்பட்டுக் கொண்டே உள்ளன. ஆண்களுக்கு இல்லையே... அவர்களுக்கு இது பெரிய தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தாது என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

ஆனால் பெண்களுக்கான பார்வை இந்த விஷயத்தில் வேறுபடுகிறது. ஆண்கள் இதிலிருந்து மீண்டு வந்துவிடுவார்கள்.

கல்வியில் பாலியல் சார்ந்த உரையாடல்கள் அதிகம் நடக்க வேண்டும். அப்போது இது ஆண்கள், பெண்கள் இருவருக்கும் இதுசார்ந்த உளவியல் தொடர்பான பிரச்சினைகளுக்குத் தீர்வு ஏற்படும்.

’மீ டூ’ இயக்கத்தின் தொடர் இணையப் பிரச்சாரங்களின் எதிரொலியாக, பெண்கள் தெரிவிக்கும் பாலியல் புகார்களை விசாரிக்க சட்ட நிபுணர்களைக் கொண்ட குழு அமைக்கப்படும் என்று மத்திய அமைச்சர் மேனகா காந்தி தெரிவித்திருப்பதன் மூலம் இந்தப் பிரச்சாரத்துக்கான சிறிய அங்கீகாரம் கிடைத்துள்ளது. இதேபோல் இந்த புகார்களின் உண்மைத் தன்மையைக் கண்டறிந்து அப்பெண்களுக்கான நீதி கிட்டும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

'ஃபேமிலி லிங்க்' என்னும் வசதி மூலம் பெற்றோர்கள் தங்கள் மகன்/மகளின் செல்போன் பயன்பாட்டை வரையறை செய்யலாம். இந்த வசதியை கூகுள் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி உள்ளது. இதைப் பயன்படுத்த கூகுள் அக்கவுண்ட் இருந்தால் போதுமானது.

இதன் மூலம் பெற்றோர்கள் தங்கள் மகனோ, மகளோ மொபைலைப் பயன்படுத்தியது போதும் என்னும்போது மொபைலை லாக் செய்ய முடியும். அத்துடன் செயலிகளை ப்ளாக் செய்யவோ, தரவிறக்கம் செய்வதையோ தடுக்க முடியும். முக்கியமாக தங்களின் குழந்தைகள் எங்கே இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதையும் கண்டறிய முடியும்.

முதல் கட்டமாக இந்த வசதி ஆண்ட்ராய்டு பயனர்களுக்கு மட்டும் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

இவ்வசதி 13 வயதுக்குக் குறைவான குழந்தைகளுக்காக உருவாக்கப்பட்டாலும் பெரியவர்களும் இதைப் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ள முடியும். 13 வயதுக்கு மேற்பட்டவர்கள் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டுமெனில், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட இரு தரப்பும் 'ஃபேமிலி லிங்க்'கைப் பயன்படுத்த ஒப்புதல் தரவேண்டும்.

அதே நேரத்தில் இதைப் பயன்படுத்துபவருக்குக் கண்காணிக்கப்படுவதில் விருப்பம் இல்லையெனில், பெற்றோர்களிடம் பாஸ்வேர்டைப் பகிர வேண்டியதில்லை. பாஸ்வேர்டு பகிரப்படும்போது பெற்றோரின் 24 மணி நேரக் கண்காணிப்பில் குழந்தைகள் இருப்பார்கள்.

‘மீ டூ' ஹேஷ்டேக் மூலம் கவிஞர் வைரமுத்து மீது பின்னணி பாடகி சின்மயி பாலியல் புகார் கூறியது தமிழகத்தில் பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. அதற்கு பதிலளித்த வைரமுத்து, ‘அறியப்பட்டவர்கள் மீது அவதூறு பரப்பும் அநாகரிகம் நாடெங்கும் இப்போது நாகரிகமாகி வருகி றது. அண்மைக்காலமாக நான் தொடர்ச்சியாக அவமானப்படுத் தப்பட்டு வருகிறேன். அவற்றுள் இதுவும் ஒன்று. உண்மைக்குப் புறம்பான எதையும் நான் பொருட்படுத்துவதில்லை. உண்மையை காலம் சொல்லும்' என தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.

இந்நிலையில், ஊடகங்களுக்கு பேட்டியளித்த சின்மயி, ‘‘கவிஞர் வைரமுத்து மீது வழக்கு தொடர்வது குறித்து வழக்கறிஞர்களுடன் ஆலோசித்து வருகிறேன். நான் தனிநபர் இல்லை. என் பின்னால் ஏராளமான பெண்கள் இருக் கிறார்கள். நீதி கிடைக்கும்வரை போராடுவேன்'' என தெரிவித் திருந்தார்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து வைரமுத்து தனது ட்விட்டர் பக்கத்தில் நேற்று வெளியிட்ட வீடியோ பதிவில், ‘‘என் மீது சுமத்தப்பட்டு வரும் குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் எல்லாம் முழுக்க முழுக்க பொய்யானவை. முற்றிலும் உள்நோக்கம் உடையவை. அவை உண்மையாக இருந்தால் சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்கள் என் மீது வழக்கு தொடுக்கலாம். சந்திக்க காத்திருக்கிறேன்.

மூத்த வழக்கறிஞர்களோடும், அறிவுலகத்தின் ஆன்றோர் களோடும் கடந்த ஒரு வாரமாக ஆழ்ந்து ஆலோசித்து வந்தேன். அசைக்க முடியாத ஆதாரங்களை தொகுத்து திரட்டி வைத்திருக் கிறேன். நீங்கள் வழக்கு போடலாம். சந்திக்க காத்திருக்கிறேன்.

தாமிரபரணி மகா புஷ்கர விழாவை யொட்டி விடுமுறை தினமான நேற்று திருநெல்வேலி, தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டங்களிலுள்ள தீர்த்தக் கட்டங்களில் திரளான பக்தர்கள் புனித நீராடினர். திருநெல்வேலி அருகே மேலச்செவலில் முஸ்லிம் களும் ஆற்றில் நீராடி கூட்டுப் பிரார்த்தனையில் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

திருநெல்வேலி, தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டங்களில் தாமிரபரணி மகா புஷ்கர விழா கடந்த 11-ம் தேதி தொடங்கியது. நான்காம் நாளான நேற்று அதிகாலையில் இருந்தே தீர்த்தக் கட்டங்களில் புனித நீராட திரளான பக்தர்கள் குடும்பத்தினருடன் திரண்டு வந்தனர். விடுமுறை தினம் என்ப தால் வெளி மாவட்டங்கள், வெளி மாநிலங்களைச் சேர்ந்த பக்தர்கள் அதிக அளவில் குவிந்தனர்.

திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள முக்கிய தீர்த்தக் கட்டங் களான பாபநாசம், திருப்புடை மருதூர், அத்தாளநல்லூர், கோடகநல்லூர், திருநெல்வேலி சந்திப்பு தைப்பூச மண்டபம், குறுக்குத்துறை, ஜடாயு தீர்த்த படித்துறைகள் மற்றும் தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்டம் முறப்பநாடு, வைகுண்டம், ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி உள்ளிட்ட படித்துறைகளில் அவர்கள் புனித நீராடினர்.

அகில பாரத துறவியர்கள் சங்கம் சார்பில் பாபநாசத்தில் நேற்று திருவாசகம் முற்றோதுதல், சைவ மாநாடு நடைபெற்றது. இதில் குறிஞ்சி ஆதீனம் சிவதிருப்பதி தேசிக பரமாச்சார்ய சுவாமி, சித்த ஆகம ஆராய்ச்சியாளர் ஈஸ்வரன் உள்ளிட்டோர் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

முஸ்லிம்களும் பங்கேற்பு

திருநெல்வேலி அருகே உள்ள மேலச்செவல் கிராமத்தில் முஸ்லிம் ஜமாத்தை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் அப்பகுதி இந்துக்களுடன் சேர்ந்து புஷ்கர விழாவில் பங்கேற்றனர். வெளி மாவட்டங்களில் வேலை பார்க்கும் இந்த கிராமத்தை சேர்ந்த முஸ்லிம்கள் ஏராளமானோர் இவ்விழாவில் பங்கேற்பதற்காக சொந்த ஊருக்கு வந்திருந்தனர். 100-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட முஸ்லிம்கள் தாமிரபரணி நதியில் நீராடி, ஆற்றங்கரை அருகில் கூட்டு பிரார்த்தனை நடத்தினர்.

இதேபோல் 50-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கிறிஸ்தவர்களும் தாமிரபரணி நதியில் புனித நீராடினர்.

விழாவை முன்னிட்டு வாகனங் களின் வருகை தொடர்ந்து அதிகரித்ததால் திருநெல்வேலி மற்றும் பாபநாசம் பகுதிகளில் அடிக்கடி போக்குவரத்து நெரிசல் ஏற்பட்டது.

அரசின் அனைத்து திட்டங்களுக்கும், சலுகைகளுக்கும் ஆதார் கட்டாயம் என வலியுறுத்தப்பட்டதை எதிர்த்து இந்தியா முழுவதும் பல மாநிலங்களில் வழக்கு தொடரப்பட்டன. தவிர பான் எண், வங்கிக் கணக்கு, மொபைல் எண் போன்றவற்றுக்கும் இணைக்க வேண்டும் என்று கட்டாயப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. இவற்றை எதிர்த்து தொடரப்பட்ட வழக்குகள் அனைத்தும் உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்துக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டு, உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் விசாரித்து வந்தது.

இந்த வழக்கில் இறுதி தீர்ப்பை வழங்கிய உச்ச நீதிமன்றம், அரசியல் சட்டப்படி ஆதார் சரியானது தான் என்று தீர்ப்பளித்தது. அதேசமயம் அதன் பயன்பாடுகளுக்கு கட்டுப்பாடுகளை விதித்துள்ளது. எனினும் ஆதார் தொடர்பாக பல்வேறு மாறுபட்ட கருத்துக்கள் மக்களிடம் நிலவி வருகின்றன. ஆனால் ஆதார் பயன்பாட்டால் போலியான நபர்கள் ஒழிக்கப்பட்டு மானியங்கள் சரியான முறையில் பயன்படுத்தப்படுவதாக மத்திய அரசு வாதிட்டு வருகிறது.

இந்தநிலையில் மலேசிய அரசும் தங்கள் நாட்டில் ஆதாரை பயன்படுத்த ஆலோசித்து வருகிறது. அந்நாட்டில் ஏற்கெனவே தேசிய அடையாள அட்டை குடிமக்களுக்கு உள்ளது. மைகாட் என்ற பெயரிலான இந்த அட்டையில் ஆதார் போன்று கைரேகை மற்றும் விழித்திரை எடுக்கப்பட்டு தகவல்கள் சேகரிக்க மலேசிய அரசு முடிவு செய்துள்ளது.

மலேசிய குழுவினர் அண்மையில் இந்தியா தரப்பில் ஆதார் தொடர்பான தகவல்களை கேட்டு பெற்று ஆலோசனை நடத்தியுள்ளனர். இதுகுறித்து மலேசிய மனிதவள மேம்பாட்டுத் துறை அமைச்சர், குலசேகரன் தனது ட்விட்டர் பக்கத்தில் கூறுகையில் ‘‘மலேசியாவிலும் ஆதார் போன்ற அட்டையை வழங்க ஆலோசித்து வருகிறோம். இதன் மூலம் மானியங்கள் உரிய நபர்களை சென்றடைவதை உறுதி செய்ய முடியும். மலேசிய அமைச்சரவை இதற்கு ஒப்புதல் அளித்துள்ளது’’ எனக் கூறியுள்ளார்.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit has stirred a hornets’ nest with his Saturday speech in Chennai when he disclosed that crores of rupees had changed hands in the past in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in universities in Tamil Nadu.

“I was shocked to hear from people that crores had changed hands in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors. I could not believe that and I decided things have to be changed,” said the Governor, who also recounted how he appointed nine prominent educationists as Vice-Chancellors to various universities in the State.

“Nobody could raise any accusatory finger at any of these appointments,” said the Governor. His disclosures had the desired effect as most of the political leaders who had questioned the appointment of Vice-Chancellors were seen scurrying for cover. They had criticised the Governor for appointing a Karnataka-born Surappa as the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and a person who did not subscribe to the Dravidian ideology as the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Ambedkar Law University.

But what is interesting in the disclosure by the Governor is that these allegations were there in Tamil Nadu since 2006. Prof M Ananadakrishnan, former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University and chairman of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, was the first academic to come out in the open and lambast the political parties for massive corruption in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors.

‘They are auctioning the post of Vice-Chancellors. Only persons willing to pay Rs 7.5 crore or more are appointed as Vice-Chancellors," he had said while addressing a public meeting in 2008. The then DMK Government led by late M Karunanidhi immediately got him removed from the post of chairmanship of the executive committee of the elite Science City.

Both the DMK and the AIADMK have made the appointment of vice-chancellors and academic faculty members an easy way to make money. The DMK which was iun power during 2006 to 2011 divided the Anna University into four so that four vice-chancellors could be appointed by charging money from the aspirants.

The AIAADMK Government which came to power in 2011 cancelled the DMK decision and brought the Anna University back to its original form. But the going rate for a vice-chancellor’s post shot past the roof when reports last came. Sources in the higher education department told The Pioneer that the vice-chancellors’post commanded a premium of anything upto Rs 20 crore depending on the size of the university.

Early this year, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) had registered cases against M Rajaram, who was the vice-chancellor of Anna University during 2013 to 2016, for violating all norms in the appointment of faculties to various departments in the University during his tenure. The investigating officers found that Rajaram charged Rs 25 lakh to Rs 45 lakh for appointing faculty members who were not qualified for the posts. The team seized documents which prove that the six faculty members were appointed following illegal gratification.

Tamil Nadu Police had also arrested A Ganapathy, vice-chancellor of Bharatiyar University, red-handed while accepting Rs 29 lakh from one of the applicants for the post of assistant professor in the university. Two former vice-chancellors of two universities have managed to get anticipatory bail from courts.

MK Stalin, president of the DMK, told reporters that the Governor, instead of making public speeches should have taken action against the Government . “It is surprising that the Governor chose to speak only about the corruption in vice-chancellor appointments,” Stalin told reporters.

A veteran police officer said the DMK president has been caught in a dilemma as he could not speak more about the Governor’s charge as all major political parties were beneficiaries of appointment in higher education.

Top court comes to rescue of SC man who was terminated twice by UP Govt

In a rare instance, the Supreme Court has come to the rescue of a man belonging to the Scheduled Caste category whose services were terminated twice by the Uttar Pradesh Government owing to a dispute over his caste certificate.

The top court, held that the subsequent change in law does not have the effect of reversing all the decisions made prior to the fresh view taken by a court of law.

The Supreme Court in 2013 had upheld an Allahabad High Court order by which Vijay Shankar was reinstated to service with all consequential benefits, holding him as a member of SC category after state government had withdrawn its appeal following a lengthy hearing.

The Uttar Pradesh government, however, in 2015 again dismissed him from service, saying a larger bench of the high court has taken a different view and his caste does not fall under the Schedule Caste category.

Shankar, who belongs to the ‘Kasera’ community, a sub-caste of ‘Shilpkars’ which is a SC category notified under the Constitution, challenged the decision once again before the Allahabad High Court, but it dismissed his plea saying that the law has now been changed by a larger bench of the top court.

A bench of justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao said the high court in its judgment, dated August 12,2015, has completely “misappreciated and misapplied the law”.

“The difference between a superior court reversing a decision, which is in appeal before itself, and overruling the view is well known,” it said.

The apex court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to immediately release the withheld pension and other retirement benefits of Shankar, who superannuated from the post of assistant prosecution officer during his second termination period.

The court, while allowing the appeal of Shankar, set aside the high court order of August 2015, rejecting his plea and his dismissal order of June 15, 2015.

“If a point is settled inter-parties and there is a subsequent change in the law because the court takes a different view, the change in a law does not have the effect of unsettling the rights settled earlier.

“The subsequent change in a law does not have the effect of reversing all the decisions made prior to the fresh view,” the bench said.

It said in the present case, Shankar’s rights were settled by the earlier high court judgment of December 23, 2011, which was upheld when the appeal of the state government was dismissed as withdrawn by the apex court.

The apex court said it was not permissible for the principal secretary, home department, to rely upon the subsequent contrary decision and dismiss the appellant (Shankar) from service again.

The ordeal of Shankar, who joined the service in 1991 as assistant prosection officer, started when he was terminated on May 21, 2007, by the state government on the ground that he has obtained the job by submitting a forged Scheduled Caste certificate.

It was found that Shankar’s caste was recorded as ‘Kasera’ in his school certificate, which according to the state government was not a SC category.

Shankar, first challenged his dismissal order before the Uttar Pradesh State Public Services Tribunal, which granted him relief by setting aside the punishment order and reinstated him with all consequential service benefits and continuity in service.

The tribunal also observed that ‘Kasera’ is a sub-caste of ‘Shilpkar’ as per a government order dated December 12,1950. It said there are 26 sub castes of ‘Shilpkar’ and that ‘Kasera’ was one of them.

Thus, ‘Kasera’ being a sub-caste of ‘Shilpkar’ comes under the category of Scheduled Caste, the tribunal said.

Aggrieved by the tribunal’s order, the Uttar Pradesh government moved the Allahabad High Court that on December 23, 2011, upheld the tribunal’s order, saying the caste of his parents as per the National Citizen Register, was found to be ‘Shilpkar’, which is a Scheduled Caste.

The State Government, then moved the apex court where after a lengthy hearing, the appeal was withdrawn and the order of the high court reinstating Shankar was upheld.

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar believes every woman must be given the dignity she deserves. In the midst of the #MeToo wave in India, she says nobody could mess around with her and get away with it.

Excerpts from the interview:

Congratulations. Your sister Meena's biography "Mothi Tichi Savli" has many revelations about you.

Who would know me better than my sister? She has been a part of my life almost from my birth. Meena's daughter Rachna is very close to me. Rachna has accompanied me to many concerts. She is doing the English version of my biography which will be out soon.

It will be out in English?

And Hindi too. We are thinking of (journalist) Ambrish Mishra for the Hindi translation. I would want the book to reach out to the maximum number of my well-wishers, supporters and fans.

I believe the book has many undisclosed nuggets about you? In one chapter, Meenaji reveals that you once threatened to cut a lyricist (Naqshab Jarchvi), into pieces?

(Laughs) Not exactly. Woh bechare ab rahe nahin (the poor chap is no more). But he had it coming. He was spreading rumours about him and me which had no truth to it. I confronted him. When I was young, I had a temper. No one could mess around with me and get away with it.

That's truly inspiring for the MeToo movement?

I truly believe a working woman must be given the dignity, respect and space she deserves. If anyone denies her that space, he must be taught a lesson.

There were many books written about you. Why are you dissatisfied with them?

I am not happy with any of the books that are written about me. These authors have not even asked me if they can write books on me. And then they have written whatever they wanted, without confirming or cross-checking facts. Some of these books have been offensive and we have even considered legal action against them.

Is it possible to tell the entire truth in biographies?

Not really. Not the entire truth. Because there are lives of others and their families involved. One has to consider the sentiments of those whose lives are affected.

Maybe that's why icons like you, Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar refuse to write an autobiography?

Perhaps. But the solution is not to lie. But to be honest with restraint. To not disclose certain areas of one's life is not dishonest. It is being discreet. But you're right. There is a scarcity of good biographies on the greats of our cinema.

Whom would you want biographies on?

Oh so many... Kundal Lal Saigal, Dilip Kumar, my father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar.

While many have welcomed the move, others are calling it a political gimmick just before the Lok Sabha elections.

Saints and seers have however hailed the announcement, maintaining that the name has not been changed but the ancient place has been given its original name. The Akhada Parishad had raised the issue of changing the city’s name last year at a meeting with Adiyanath and he had promised to fulfill their demand by the Kumbh Mela 2019.

There had been attempts to change Allahabad’s name to Prayag during the previous Bharatiya Janata Party governments headed by Rajanath Singh and Kalyan Singh in the state. However, the proposal did not materialize following disapproval by the supporting parties.

With the fresh declaration by the chief minister on Saturday, the proposal will now be presented before the cabinet for approval and will then be forwarded to the governor. However, governor Ram Naik had already given his nod to the proposal at the meeting of the Kumbh Margdarshak Mandal on Saturday.

Welcoming the move, Allahabad University’s medieval and modern history department head Prof Yogeshwar Tiwari said Mughal Emperor Akbar named the city ‘Ilahabas’ in 1574 which later came to be known as Ilahabad and then Allahabad. However, the city has been mentioned as Prayag in ‘ancient sacred texts such as ‘puranas’, ‘Valmiki Ramayan’, Mahabharat and manuscripts of Kalidas, he said, adding the change will help the new generation to understand the history of the city better.

However, Prof Harsh Kumar of the ancient history department said that the name Prayag was established as a ‘tirthraj’ or a place of pilgrimage but not as a city. The place was a center of ancient ‘Rishis’ and sages who used to perform ‘tapasya’ at the ashrams, he said, contending that the region was known for two cities Pratishthanpur (now Jhunsi) and Kaushambi.

“Allahabad came into existence during the period of Akbar. The emperor launched a new religion ‘Deen-e-Ilahi’ on which the city was named Ilahabad. Changing the name of the city does not makes any sense as the name “Allahabad’ represents a mixed culture of the city,” he added. Akbar’s religion had sought to combine the features of various Indian religions.

Akhil Bhartiya Akhada Parishad president Narendra Giri said the Ramcharit Manas mentions the name Prayagraj, which was later, changed to Allahabad. “However, changing the name of the place does not changes the history. The faith of crores of people is connected with Prayagraj. The people who are opposed to Prayagraj are unaware of the fact that the place was known as Prayagraj since ages,” he said.

Omkar Giri of Beni Madhav temple said Prayag is the king of all ‘tirths’. “Prayagraj and Sangam are synonyms. Changing the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj is a welcome move,” he added.

Congress leader Baba Abhay Awasthi said the decision would not make any impact. Prayag was alive even the city was known as Allahabad. The name change by the chief minister does not make any sense, he added.

Writer Mamta Kalia said Allahabad is in the heart of the people and cannot be erased. The government should focus on other problems instead of changing the name, she said.

Advocates Association of India also condemned the decision. Its secretary Rupendra Nath Singh said instead of renaming the while city, only the Triveni and Sangam area should have been named as Prayagraj. The name Allahabad is not connected to a particular religion and instead it was named after Akbar’s new religion Deen-e-Ilahi, he said.

WhatsApp to make big change to its ‘delete for everyone’ feature

WhatsApp last year launched the most sought after feature, “delete for everyone.” As the name implies, the feature enables users to revoke messages in case they were sent to a wrong contact or group. WhatsApp is now making an important change to the feature which is aimed at users who bypassed the time limit on revoking messages.

WABetainfo, a website that regularly monitors the instant messaging platform, reports that WhatsApp’s latest beta version for Android has a modified “recipient limit.” This essentially means users cannot delete a message for everyone if the recipient does not receive the revoke request in 13 hours, 8 minutes and 16 seconds. The website says this may happen when the recipient has switched off the phone.

According to the website, the change has been made in order to prevent some users from bypassing the feature to delete messages sent weeks and even years ago. “You can still delete a message for everyone within 1h, 8m, 16s as long as the recipient will receive your revoke request within 13h, 8m, 16s,” it added.

This is a protection against modded users that revoked messages sent weeks, months and years ago.

It is not clear whether the new “recipient limit” will apply if the recipient quickly switches off the phone and keeps the device off for over 14 hours or switches off the internet immediately after.

Right now, if you switch off your mobile data immediately after a message (to be revoked later) is sent, message stays on the device. It gets deleted only after you switch on your data. We have reached out to WhatsApp for more clarity on the new change.
