HC asks MTC to hand over ₹15L to accident victim's kin

: The Madras High Court has directed the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to provide compensation of ₹15 lakh to the dependents of a man, who was run over by an MTC bus in 2011.

The bench comprising Justice Sasidharan and Justice Subramanian ordered that ₹9.56 lakh and ₹3 lakh should be provided as compensation to the deceased’s wife and parent, respectively, with an interest of 7.5 per cent within eight weeks.

The victim Kumaresan, who was standing on the pavement, was mowed over by an MTC bus due to the ignorance of a driver near the Central Railway Station in 2011.

Thereafter, his wife and parent approached the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Chennai and filed a case demanding compensation to the tune of ₹1 crore.

The tribunal awarded ₹12.47 lakh as compensation considering the family circumstance of deceased. However, MTC filed an appeal in the Madras High Court over the award.
