Health dept to run city medical college

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai:

With fiscal status of its state transport undertakings becoming extremely weak and unable to contribute effectively to the ongoing expenses of the Institute of Road Transport (IRT), the government on Thursday ordered the transfer of IRT-run Perundurai Medical College and Hospital and School of Nursing to the state health department with effect from 2019-20 academic year. This will not deprive the existing seat protection to the wards of employees of transport corporations.

“The allotment of 30 MBBS seats to the wards of employees of state transport undertakings will be continued even after handing the institution to the health department as the institution was started on the fund contributed by the employees. The remaining seats will be treated as government seats,” said transport secretary PWC Davidar. The total number of seats increased to 100 since last year after Medical Council of India concurred to the arrangement.

As per admission procedure, 15 seats go to Central quota, 55 seats to government and the remaining 30 management of IRT by following the merit-cum-communal rotation. IRT-School of Nursing came into existence in 2008-09, offering diploma courses to 60 students every year. Of which, 20 seats are reserved for the wards of employees of state transport undertakings. The transport department has also handed over the nursing school to the health department.
