A medical college in Palghar has recently issued a notice to its students, asking them to pay annual fees of Rs 14 lakh for the academic year 2018-19, failing which, they would not be allowed to attend regular classes and will be marked absent.
The Vedantaa Institute of Medical Sciences, which is affiliated to the MaharashtraUniversity of Health Sciences, Nashik, became the first for-profit education institute in Maharashtra registered under the Companies Actin 2017. Last year, it had sent a proposal to the Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA) to charge Rs 14 lakh fees per annum for the MBBS course.
However, FRA recommended capping the annual fees at Rs 6 lakh for the academic year 2017-18 and asked the institute to refund fee amounts taken over and above Rs 6 lakh. The institute challenged FRA's decision before the Bombay High Court. On October 15, the High Court stayed the decision of the FRA.
On October 16, the institute issued a notice asking second-year MBBS students to pay Rs. 14 lakh as fees for the academic year 2018-19.
"The students who fail to pay the tuition fees of Rs. 14 lakh will not be allowed to attend regular classes after eight days of the publication of this notice and will be marked absent," the notice stated. Students need to have 75 per cent attendance in order to appear for exams.
The institute also said that due to the non-payment of fees, it was in a financial problem and had not paid teachers' salaries.
In April this year, the state government had exempted the institute from the ambit of FRA.
