Cashier steals ₹61Lakh from bank, arrested

A 42-year-old man was arrested for stealing about ₹61 lakh from a nationalized bank in Porur. Police said Suresh, 42, of Jafferkhanpet who was the cashier at the bank for the last seven years, stole the amount over the past three years, ever since he was stationed at the branch in Porur.
An internal audit revealed the discrepancy as the amount in the accounts and the books did not tally. When confronted with the issue Suresh gave evasive replies. The manager of the bank filed a police complaint at SRMC police station. A police team arrested Suresh and brought him in for questioning.
During the interrogation Suresh admitted to his crime, police said he used to take the money before placing cash into the lockers and the ATM machine as he had access to the keys. The police recovered ₹3,93,000 in cash and seven sovereign of gold jewels he had purchased with the stolen money. He spent the rest of the cash on booze and enjoying an affluent lifestyle, police added.
