Forty per cent of postgraduate seats in the Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC), which is promoted and funded by the Puducherry government, remained unfilled after counselling by the centralized admission committee (Centac) for the academic year 2018-19. Of the total 281 M Tech, MCA and MSc seats, 112 seats went unfilled.

Even though there is a sharp decline in enrolment of students into postgraduate engineering and MCA courses in the country in the past few years, a cross-section of academicians said the inordinate delay in commencing the admission process was a major reason for the poor enrolment of students into postgraduate courses in the governmentpromoted engineering college.

They pointed out that Anna University and other leading institutions across the nation commenced admissions in February-March this year and completed the process before June-July while the Puducherry government commenced the admission by launching a common platform on May 30 and completed the process last month.

PEC associate dean (administration) G Sivaradje attributed the poor enrolment of students to the falling demand for the postgraduate engineering courses nationally. “Yes, there are more than 100 postgraduate seats fell vacant. The falling demand for these courses nationally is the reason. There is no delay in commencing the admission process. In fact, we finished the process earlier when compared to last year,” he said.
