CHENNAI : The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to submit particulars about the vacancy position in its medical colleges and their admission capacity to the Medical Council of India (MCI)/Board of Governors (BoGs) in New Delhi, immediately.

Justice S S Sundar gave the directive, while passing further interim orders on a batch of writ petitions from SU Archana and 102 others, all second year students of defunct Ponniah Ramajayam Medical Sciences in Manamai Nallur in Kancheepuram district.

The court, on an earlier occasion, had directed the State government to address MCI and the Union government to obtain necessary permission for accommodating all the 103 students in other self-financing private medical colleges and collect the statistics regarding the number of seats and other particulars about the government medical colleges, orally. MCI/Board of Governors counsel stated that the board had received the representation from the Tamil Nadu government. However, the board has taken no decision so far.

Taking into consideration the interest of students and the submissions of advocate H Rajasekar and others, the judge directed the BoGs to come up with a draft proposal suggesting accommodation of students in government or private medical colleges, so that he will be able to pass appropriate orders on certain issues which would be addressed before him by the State government and the students.

The BoGs, either shall pass appropriate orders or come forward with a scheme or proposal within two weeks, the judge said.
Counsel for BoGs submitted that in view of the fact that a few other private institutions are also facing problems similar to that of Ponniah medical college, the BoGs would prefer to suggest that the students be accommodated only in government colleges. “Giving respect to the submission and the stand taken by the MCI/BoGs, the State government is also directed to submit the particulars about the vacancies in its colleges and their admission capacity,” the judge added and posted the matter for November 16.
