: A 100-year-old woman was allegedly raped in Chakdaha in West Bengal’s Nadia district early on Tuesday morning by a 21-year-old man, who is two years younger than her great-grandson.

The accused was arrested and charged with rape under Section 376 of Indian penal code, based on the FIR lodged by the survivor’s son, the police said.

While police remained tight-lipped, the assault came to light when the accused was produced in a Kalyani court on Wednesday.

The survivor lives with her grandchildren and great grandchildren in Chakdaha’s Ganga Prasadpur, while her sons live in Chakdaha town.

“I heard my grandmother’s screams around 2am. I also heard someone rushing out of her room,” the survivor’s granddaughter said.

“The accused, who lives nearby, was trying to flee, but on seeing my brother-in-law, he re-entered my grandmother’s room and hid under the bed. After hearing my screams for help, neighbours got hold of him,” she added.

The family and neighbours then informed the Chakdaha police, who reached the spot and picked the accused, who was later arrested. A medical test has confirmed the rape.

The court remanded the accused in judicial custody for 14 days. Police sources said he has confessed to the crime during interrogation.
