3kg gold worth ₹98.5L seized by customs at Chennai airport

Customs officials at Anna International Airport on Tuesday thwarted four cases of attempted gold smuggling.

Much of the 3kg of the gold seized came from Masthan Khan, 53, a resident of Kadappa who arrived from Kuwait via Goa by Air India flight AI-976. On suspicion, Customs officials intercepted Khan near the exit gate and found he was carrying five gold cut bits, five crude gold kadas and assorted jewellery, together weighing 1.7kg and worth ₹55 lakh.

The passenger said the gold wasn’t his; he had found the gold in the tissue paper compartment in the rear toilet of the flight. He was arrested.

In the other three cases, passengers Mohammad Fazizd, 26, of Chennai, Sheikh Hussain Ashraf Ali, 33, of Trichy and Ismail Sheikh Dawood, 22, of Sivaganga, who had arrived from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia flight AK11, were intercepted on suspicion of bringing gold.

In their check-in baggage were several ceiling fans. One carried 11 of them and the other two four each. On breaking the fans, the officials found gold inside the motors in the form of strips and hollow rods weighing 1.25kg.

Another 30g gold bits were also found on each of them. Officials estimated the worth of 1.34kg gold recovered from the trio at ₹43.32 lakh.

All of them have been booked under the Customs Act, 1962.In all four cases 3 kg gold worth ₹98.5 lakh was recovered.
