தேசத்தின் கவுரவத்தை உணர்கிறோமா நாம்?

சென்னையை ஒரு குலுக்குக் குலுக்கிவிட்டு முடிந்திருக்கிறது சென்னைப் புத்தகக் காட்சி. 11,00,000 + வாசகர்கள், 30,00,000 + புத்தகங்கள், ரூ.15,00,00,000 + விற்பனை என இந்தப் புத்தகக் காட்சி வெளிப்படுத்தும் எண்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒளியூட்டுகின்றன.

சென்னைப் புத்தகக் காட்சியின் பிரம்மாண்டமும் வெற்றியும் தமிழகத்தின் கவுரவமாக மட்டும் அல்ல; இந்தியாவின் மாபெரும் அறிவுலகக் கொண்டாட்ட நிகழ்வாகவும் இன்றைக்கு உருவெடுத் திருக்கிறது. ஆனால், அதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை நாம் எந்த அளவுக்கு உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோம்?

ஏறத்தாழ 10 லட்சம் மக்கள் கூடுகிற ஓர் இடத்துக்கும் நிகழ்வுக்கும் அரசு எவ்வளவு கவனம் தர வேண்டும்? புத்தகக் காட்சிக்குச் சென்றால், ஏமாற்றமும் வருத்தமுமே எஞ்சுகிறது. புத்தகக் காட்சியில் மக்கள் சாதாரணக் கழிப்பறை வசதிக்கு எவ்வளவு அல்லல்படுகிறார்கள்? பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகள் எவ்வளவு மோசம்?

இப்படி இந்தப் புத்தகக் காட்சியின் போதாமைகள் எதை நோக்கிச் சென்றாலும், நாம் புத்தகக் காட்சி அமைப்பாளர்களை நொந்துகொள்ள நியாயம் இல்லாமலே போகிறது. எல்லாவற்றுக்குமான அடிப்படைக் காரணம், ஆண்டுதோறும் புத்தகக் காட்சி நடத்துவதற்கென்று ஒரு நிரந்தர இடம் ஒதுக்கப்படாதது.

ஒரு சமூகத்தின் ஆரோக்கிய அறிவு வளர்ச்சிக்கான அடையாளங்கள் புத்தகங்கள். புத்தகமும் வாசிப்பும் ஒரு சமூகத்தின் கூட்டுச் செயல்பாடுகள். சென்னை போன்ற ஒரு மாநகரில், இப்படி ஒரு அறிவார்த்தச் செயல்பாட்டுக்கு நிரந்தர இடம் ஒதுக்க முடியவில்லை என்பது உண்மையில் ஒரு சமூக அவமானம்.

பொருட்காட்சிகளில் தொடங்கி பட்டாசுக் கண்காட்சிகள் வரை நடத்துவதற்கு இந்த நகரில் நிரந்தர இடம் கிடைக்கிறது; புத்தகங்களுக்கு இடம் இல்லையா? ஏன் நம்மால், புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கென ஒரு நிரந்தர இடத்தை ஒதுக்க முடியவில்லை?

உண்மையில், புத்தகங்களுக்கு நாம் கொடுக்கும் மதிப்புக்கான குறியீடு இது. எழுத்தாளர் பெருமாள்முருகன் விவகாரம் சர்வதேச அளவில் ஏன் பேசப்படுகிறது? இங்கே அது எப்படி உள்ளூர் மாவட்ட நிர்வாகத்தால் அணுகப்படுகிறது? இதுவும் ஒரு குறியீடுதான்.

“நூலகங்களுக்குப் புத்தகங்கள் வாங்கும் முறைமை ஊழல் மயமாகியிருக்கிறது; தரகுத் தொகையைக் கொண்டுதான் அதிகாரிகள் பெரும்பாலான நூல்களைத் தீர்மானிக்கிறார்கள்” என்று புலம்புகிறார்களே சில பதிப்பாளர்கள், அதுவும் ஒரு குறியீடுதான். ஆனால், இந்தக் குறியீடுகள் எதுவுமே நல்ல அறிகுறிகள் அல்ல. புத்தகங்களையும் எழுத்தாளர்களையும் மதிக்கும் ஒரு சமூகமே வளர்ச்சியின் படிநிலையில் மேலே இருக்கும். புத்தகங்களுக்கும் எழுத்தாளருக்கும் இசைவான ஒரு சூழலை அரசு உருவாக்கித் தருவது அவசியம்.

அரசுதான் இதைச் செய்ய முடியும் என்பதை உரியவர்கள் உணர்ந்தாலே பிரச்சினைகள் முடிவுக்கு வந்துவிடும்!

New monthly pass to encourage commuters to travel during off-peak hours -

SINGAPORE - In a bid to get more commuters to travel outside the peak hours, the Government is launching a new off-peak monthly travel pass from July 5.

For $80 a month, commuters will get unlimited travel on buses and trains during off-peak hours on weekdays, and throughout the day on weekends and public holidays.

Off-peak hours on the weekdays are any period outside of the morning peak period from 6.30am to 9am and the evening rush hours of 5pm to 7.30pm.

The two-year pilot scheme is expected to benefit around 40,000 commuters, the Ministry of Transport said on Wednesday.

The trial will be funded by the Government at an estimated cost of $10 million a year.

Persons with disabilities and senior citizens can also purchase the off-peak travel pass for $40 a month.

Only Singapore citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for the scheme.

Gifts Given by Prime Minister Are Top Secret: Foreign Ministry

It is public knowledge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a copy of the Bhagwad Gita to Japanese Emperor Akihito during his visit to the country in September last year.

But, when a Bandra resident filed an RTI asking for the list of gifts that the Indian PMs between May 2009 and November 2014 had given to the heads of state during their visits abroad, his application was turned down.

In its reply, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that disclosing the information would prejudicially affect India's relations with the concerned foreign states. This, even though the Ministry itself publishes the lists of gifts received by ministers and officials on its website.

The RTI was filed by Austin Fernandes on December 8, and the reply from the MEA, which reached him on December 26, said, "This is to state that the Prime Minister of India presents gifts, as per the laid down norms, to various foreign dignitaries during his official visits abroad.

Information sought by you relates to details of gifts presented during the period mentioned above. However, disclosure of this information may prejudicially affect India's relations with the concerned foreign states.

SEEKING LOGIC

Earlier this month, Fernandes, who was unhappy with the MEA reply, wrote back to the ministry. In his appeal to the ministry, he has said, "The Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) had thus claimed a blanket exemption under Section 8(1)(a) for all information without any application of mind as to the applicability of exemption in each individual case and has thereby sought to frustrate my application.

The reply of the CPIO is illogical, since the Ministry itself maintains a list of gifts received by officials in Toshakhana and regularly publishes the same on the website (http://mea.gov.in/disclosureofgiftsreceivedintoshakhana.htm). Going by the CPIO's logic, publication of such a list would then prejudicially affect India's relations with foreign states, which is surely not the case."

His letter goes on to say, "Many countries, like the United States, maintain lists of gifts given to their officials by foreign officials, which are published on the internet. For example, the US state department website has a list of gifts federal employees have received from foreign government sources http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/c29447.htm The list for 2011 (http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/210473.pdf) includes on page 12 a gift received by President Barack Obama from Dr. Manmohan Singh, then Prime Minister of India viz. A 20'' octagonal white marble table top with design of inlaid blue and yellow flowers, and octagonal stand decorated with blue and red flowers. Rec'd-11/18/ 2011. Est. Value $1,375.00.

If the foreign recipients of gifts from the Prime Minister of India are pleased to disclose the nature of gifts without any fear of prejudicially affecting relations with India, this surely contradicts the CPIO's blanket claim of exemption on this ground."


'JUST CURIOUS'

When mid-day contacted Fernandes, he said, "The reason I filed the RTI was that there was so much hullabaloo over the PM's visit and he had, in one of his interactions, publicly acknowledged that he had gifted the Gita to the Japanese Emperor.

Hence, out of curiosity, I filed the RTI to find out the other gifts given by him and the previous PM in the May 2009-November 2014 period." mid-day sent a detailed email to the spokesperson of MEA, Syed Akbaruddin, asking him why Fernandes' request was turned down. We did not receive a reply.

Vistara cuts fare to counter rivals like Jet Airways and Air India

MUMBAI: Vistara, Tata Sons' joint venture carrier with Singapore Airlines, has brought ticket price levels lower to lessen the gaps with rivals — in some cases even offering cheaper tickets than competitors — after price-sensitive Indian customers opted for discounts offered by Jet AirwaysBSE -0.73 % and Air India.

The fares are almost half of what they were last week, data from travel portals and its own website showed.

For instance, a Delhi-Mumbai ticket price booked for a flight a month in advance is Rs 5,481, compared to about Rs 10,700 last week. The price is lower than most rivals, including IndiGo.

சமோசா சாப்பிடலாமா?

உருளைக்கிழங்கோடு வெங்காயம், பச்சைப் பட்டாணி, மசாலா பொடிகளை சேர்த்து தயாரிக்கும் பொருள்தான் சமோசா. வட இந்தியாவிலிருந்து தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கு வந்த உணவுப்பொருள்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று. சுவைக்காகவும், பசியை போக்குவனவாகவும் மக்களிடம் அறிமுகமான சமோசாவின் சுவைக்காக குழந்தைகளும் இன்று மயங்கி நிற்கின்றனர். இந்த சுவைக்காகவும், கெட்டுப்போகாமல் இருப்பதற்கும் சேர்க்கப்படும் பொருள்தான் சமோசா சாப்பிடுபவர்களை அதிர்ச்சிக்குள்ளாக்கி வருகிறது. அது என்ன என்றால் வினிகர் தான். இதன் அறிவியல் பெயர் அசிட்டிக் அமிலம் என்று சொல்வார்கள்.

நாம் சாப்பிடும் பெரும்பான்மையான சமோசாவில் கலந்திருப்பது ரசாயன வினிகர்தான். சமோசாவின் சுவையில் இதை எளிதில் கண்டறிய முடியாது. எலுமிச்சை பழங்களிலிருந்து தயாரிக்கப்படும் வினிகரும் கிடைக்கிறது. அது விலை அதிகமானவை என்பதால் யாரும் பயன்படுத்துவதில்லை. இந்த ரசாயன வினிகரின் விலை அரை லிட்டர் 35 ரூபாய்தான். சாதாரண மளிகைக் கடைகளிலே கிடைக்கிறது. இதன் காரணமாக சமோசாவின் சுவைக்காக குறிப்பிட்ட அளவில் சேர்த்து வருகிறார்கள். ஹோட்டல்கள் தொடங்கி... சாதாரண டீ கடைகள் வரை பயன்படுத்தி வருகிறார்கள். சமோசாவை காலையில் தயார் செய்துவிட்டால் இரவு வரை கடைகளில் இருப்பதை பார்த்திருப்போம். சமோசாவை சூடாக கொடுப்பதற்காக பப்ஸ் வகைகளை வைத்து விற்கும் ஹாட் பாக்ஸில் வைத்தும் தற்போது விற்பனை செய்து வருகிறார்கள். பசியிலும், சமோசா கொடுக்கும் ருசியிலும் இதை பெரும்பாலும் கவனிப்பதில்லை.

இந்த ரசாயன வினிகர் பாத்திரங்கள் கழுவும் சோப், கை கழுவும் சோப் மற்றும் பாத்திரங்கள் கழுவும் எண்ணெயில் அதிகமாக பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. பாத்திரங்கள் கழுவும் சோப் முழுக்க முழுக்க எலுமிச்சையிலிருந்து தயாரிப்பதாக நிறுவனங்கள் விளம்பரங்கள் செய்கின்றன. அப்படி முழுக்க முழுக்க எலுமிச்சையைப் பயன்படுத்தினால் நம் விவசாயிகள் கோடீஸ்வரர்கள் ஆகியிருப்பார்கள். மலிவான விலையில் கிடைக்கும் இந்த ரசாயன வினிகரால்தான் பாத்திரங்கள் பளிச்... பளிச்...ன்னு காட்சி தருகிறது. நம் வயிற்றுக்குள் போகும் ரசாயன வினிகர் என்ன செய்யும் என்பதை நீங்களே யோசித்து கொள்ளுங்கள்.

இந்த வினிகரை கலந்தால் சமோசா 3 நாட்கள் வரை கெட்டுப்போகாமல் இருக்கும் என்பது கூடுதல் தகவல். சரி... வினிகர் கலந்த சமோசவை எப்படி கண்டுபிடிப்பது? அனுபவம் உள்ளவர்கள் அதன் சுவையை வைத்து கண்டுபிடிக்கலாம். இல்லையென்றால் சோதனைக் கூடத்தில் வைத்தும் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியும். இதையெல்லாத்தையும் விட தினமும் ஒரு சமோசா என்பதை முடிந்தளவு தவிர்க்க பாருங்கள்.

சமோசாவில் ரசாயன வினிகர் கலப்பது குறித்து சென்னை விஜயா மருத்துவமனையின் உணவு ஆலோசகர் கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தியிடம் பேசினோம்.

"தரமற்ற ஆயில், மைதா மாவால் தயார் செய்யப்படும் சமோசாவை சாப்பிடவே கூடாது. அதுவும் இந்த ஆயில் அப்பிக் கிடக்கும் சிறிய சமோசாவை அறவே தவிர்க்கலாம். சமோசாவால் உடலுக்கு பெரியளவில் மைக்ரோ நியூட்டிரிஷியன், புரோட்டீன் சத்துக்கள் கிடைப்பதில்லை. ஆற்றல் மட்டுமே கிடைக்கிறது. முன்பெல்லாம் கேரட், பீன்ஸ்.. மாதிரியான காய்கறிகள் கலந்திருக்கும். இப்போதும் அதையும் போடுவதில்லை.

ஊறுகாயில் கெட்டுப்போகாமல் இருப்பதற்கு சேர்க்கப்படும் வினிகரை சுவைக்காக சேர்த்து தயாரிக்கிறார்கள். இது இயற்கையாக தயாரிக்கப்படும் வினிகராக இருந்தால் பரவாயில்லை. ரசாயன வினிகராக இருப்பதால் உடலில் அசிடிட்டி உருவாகி வயிற்றுப் புண்ணை வரவைக்கிறது. அதுவும் வாயு தொல்லை இருப்பவர்கள் அறவே தவிர்க்க வேண்டும். சாப்பிட்ட பிறகு ஒருவித ஏப்பம் வந்துகொண்டே இருக்கும். நெஞ்சு கரிக்கும். நாளடைவில் அதுவே ஒவ்வாமையை ஏற்படுத்திவிடும். செயற்கை வினிகரை தொடர்ந்து உணவில் கலப்பதால் புற்று நோய் வரும் என்று மருத்துவர்கள் ஏற்கனவே எச்சரித்து வருகிறார்கள்.

இதையெல்லாம் தவிர்க்க வேண்டுமானால் எந்த உணவு பொருளானாலும் சமைத்த 4லிருந்து 6 மணி நேரத்தில் சாப்பிட்டுவிட வேண்டும். சமோசாவுக்கு பதிலாக பருப்பு வடை, கடலை மாவில் செய்யப்படும் பஜ்ஜி ஆகியவற்றை சாப்பிடலாம்'' என்றார்.

Over 20 questions repeated in test for Rajasthan medical officers

JAIPUR: It was a rude shock for candidates who appeared for the recruitment of medical officers (MO) in two separate categories organized by Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS) on Tuesday. There were over 20 same questions in the papers held in a gap of two hours for medical and dental categories. 

Most candidates were surprised as the two tests were held within a gap of two hours and more than 20 questions were exactly the same in both the papers.

Dr Pradeep Sharma, a candidate who appeared in the test for dental (MO) said: "The MO test for medical was organized from 9 am to 11 am and the test for dental (MO) was organized from 1 pm to 3 pm. As there was a two-hour gap between both the papers, those candidates who appeared in medical (MO) test could easily pass on the information about the questions appeared."

The RUHS, on the other hand, has released the list of selected candidates also.

Another candidate, Dr Amit Kumar Jain said, "It is understandable if there are two-five same questions. But there is always a suspicion when more than 20 questions are the same in the two papers held in a gap of two hours." He said that if more than 20 questions are same out of 100 questions, it raises a question on the authenticity of the test.
