Three incidents of fire were reported in Nungambakkam, Madhavaram and Kelambakkam on Friday night and Saturday.

In Kelambakkam, a fire at a private hospital gutted medicines and medical equipment at 4.15am on Saturday morning. Fire was spotted at the first floor of a pharmacy and the security guard informed police and fire and rescue services personnel.

“The fire started at the first floor of the building where the hospital is located and spread to the second floor. Three fire tenders from Siruseri, Maraimalai Nagar and Thirukazhukundram were pressed into service,” said a fire officer.

Firefighters struggled for more than two hours to douse the fire, said a police officer. The private hospital has four different buildings.

Preliminary investigations revealed that staff spotted smoke emanating from an air conditioner at the pharmacy and alerted the security personnel, but soon the blaze erupted.

“Around 25 patients from the second and the first floor adjacent to the pharmacy were shifted immediately to safety by the hospital management,” said the police officer.

The fire was put out by 6am with the help of more than 10 fire fighters, sources said. Kelambakkam police registered a case and are estimating the loss of goods in the accident.

In another fire accident at Nungambakkam on Friday, two doll-making units and sales showroom went up in flames around 11pm. At least five fire tenders were pressed into the service. No one was injured in the accident.

In yet another accident, imported sports goods worth ₹2 crore kept at a godown in Madhavaram were gutted on Saturday morning.

Five fire tenders took about three hours to douse the fire. No one was injured in the accident.

Singapore celebrates Tamil

Artists, orators and writers from Chennai participate in the month-long festival to promote the language

Last week, actor Rohini packed her bags and headed to Singapore. She took along verses of poets Sa Vijayalakshmi, Ilampirai, and Tamil translations of Maya Angelou, and had a performance planned around them. To her, these native language works carry enough essence to incite the right amount of curiosity and awe in Singapore’s 1,89,000-strong Tamil diaspora and act as a guide to their roots.

Rohini is among the artists, writers, poets and orators from Chennai contributing to the month-long Tamil language festival hosted by Singapore’s Tamil Language Council and the Education Ministry from March 30 to April 28. “These works talk about suppression, the fight for gender equality, and are powerful tools to engage with the younger generation while giving them an insight into the language itself,” says Rohini. “It’s not practical to expect this generation to be seeped into Tamil culture when they have very little connect with it in their everyday lives.”

Although Tamil is one of the official languages of Singapore, in the everyday lives of children, it has taken a backseat, says Abhi Krish, author and founder of Eli Puli, an initiative that delivers Tamil language resources to children under eight, through fun and innovative techniques. “Tamil is rarely a part of everyday exchanges, especially within local family units,” she says.

This means schools end up shouldering the responsibility of taking Tamil to children, who learn it as a second language only when they enter first grade, by when it is more of a new subject they struggle with than a mother tongue they should be familiar with.

Among the works from Chennai, which are being promoted by Eli Puli to mark Singapore’s Tamil language festival is the ‘Gajapati Kulapati’ series by Tulika Books, penned and illustrated by children’s book author Ashok Rajagopalan. While Ashok created the first book of the series in Tamil, the next two were translated from English to Tamil by popular storyteller Jeeva Ragunath.

“At a time when the language is scrambling for space colloquially, a good way to have children warm up to it is to turn it into a source of entertainment. All my stories are funny and made for ‘read aloud’ sessions. They don’t carry lofty messages and incorporate funny sounds to keep kids engaged,” says Ashok, whose books ‘Gajapati Kulapati Dhobukkadeer’ and ‘Bondapalliyil Bondattam’ are being promoted in Singapore. As part of the celebrations, Abhi has started an illustrator design challenge showcasing 21 interpretations of the alphabets ‘tha’, ‘mi’, ‘zh’ (in Tamil) by 21 artists, including Chennai-based Vasudevan Ananthakrishnan, Lavanya Karthik and Nancy Raj.

Using the festival as a platform for cultural exchange, the council has invited from Tamil Nadu orators such as Suki Sivam and Abdul Kader, a troupe doing Bharatiyar plays and a puppetry group from Kumbakonam, to proliferate ideas of unity and brotherhood contained in the language.

“The intention of the festival is to create greater awareness of the language and ensure that its usage extends beyond the school,” says R Rajaram, chairman of Tamil language Council. “Getting arts people and groups from Singapore and around the world is one of the cornerstones of this festival, as that is how we enable community empowerment.”

Is it easy to be a single mother in India?

"When my husband passed away, life seemed difficult. But once you decide to manage things on your own, nothing is impossible. I never cared about society, because I had twins to take care of. During my children’s growing up years, I would tell them about the hardships I faced in bringing them up without a father. Since my son and daughter were sensitive towards me and became my friends, I could manage everything alone. People around me would always give unsolicited advice, but I realised that society can never change. So, being confident and having strong willpower was my mantra to sail through,” says Ranjana Mallan, who has been a single mother for over seven years.

It’s hard to fathom the magnitude of challenges that single mothers (widows, divorcees, separated or single parent by choice) face every day in India. So much so, that they often seek help from mental health professionals. Changing times and the exposure that kids get these days due to the Internet and smartphones make life harder for single mothers. “They are often tensed about the right way of bringing up their kids. They tend to over-compensate for the absent parent and overdo in terms of material things and discipline. Catering to kids these days is difficult, because the demand for electronic gadgets has soared, the education system has changed and kids are exposed to outside influences. So, single mothers are overwhelmed and feel the responsibility a bit too much,” says Dr Nirmala Rao, psychiatrist.

Here are some of the challenges that single mothers in the country face every day.

Lack of safety net

Lack of a safety net affects most single mothers. Women who don’t have a support system, left home after being abused or those who were abandoned find themselves working hard to make ends meet. Financial independence is the biggest challenge. Besides being the sole breadwinners, they have to take care of their children and manage a home single-handedly. Other than the financial challenges, being a single mother is also emotionally draining and stressful. As a single mom living independently, you can’t afford to fall sick, take off on your own or take a night off from being a parent. The sense of loneliness is enhanced when the workplace environment is unpleasant and not accommodating. “Being a single mother, I’m the one always carrying the grocery bag, taking kids to school, doctor check-ups and dance classes. I’m always in the driver’s seat and there is no respite. There is no companion to share the load with,” says Mumbai-based Maya Sharma (name changed), a single mom and teacher.

High vulnerability and being judged

In India, where patriarchy is quite prevalent, a single mother is treated differently from someone who has a husband. Single moms often face illicit approaches by other men, ranging from mild flirtations, to subtle hints to sexual harassment. It becomes particularly disturbing for those women who have been victims of harassment, abuse and domestic violence. This adds to their stress and they often don’t share their grievances with anyone, fearing being judged. “Being single doesn’t mean that we are available. It’s important that the way single mothers are perceived in society should change. Rather than considering a single mother weak, it’s high time society starts looking at our strengths. Even today, single mothers find it difficult to accept their status in an open forum, because people tend to judge. A divorcee is often judged for her character, because in a patriarchal set-up, women are expected to accept men the way they are. It doesn’t matter if the husbands are drunkards, gamblers or womanisers,” says Mumbai-based Kasturi Deo, who parted ways with her husband many years ago. “I am happy being single, rather than being cheated on,” she adds.

Another single mother, Srobona Das, says, "Women in India and everywhere, are constantly judged. I have been called strong, willful, headstrong, weak, unsteady, and been pitied. In turn, people have also assumed that I cannot sustain relationships, I am fast/ have a loose character etc. I have been cautioned not to post too many pictures on Facebook that show me 'partying' or having a good time - lest people think I am neglecting my child. Patriarchy is age-old and deeply entrenched in most of us, else would we even get married or utter vows to love, honour and obey? Despite many examples of strong single mothers, women ably and single-handedly raising their children in India today, she is still expected to be 'sanskaari', waiting for the next man/ marriage, and made the butt of jokes and snide remarks."

City-based media professional, Riya Agnihotri (name changed), shares, “I often face this (being approached by men), but since I have been a single mom for a while, I know how to overcome such situations. I chose the path (single motherhood) for a reason and I have proven to the world that I’m a confident woman, who can fight all the challenges with a smile on my face.”

Dearth of time

Juggling household chores, looking after kids and work barely leaves single mothers with the much-deserved ‘me’ time. In fact, they often find it challenging to adjust their schedule and be completely involved with their kids’ school activities. Their parenting skills, patience and understanding are constantly put to test and to instil discipline in them while they spend most of their hours outdoors becomes challenging.

Financial concerns

Single moms often have to brave through the storms of economic turmoil alone. Being a single parent, she is the only one who earns in the family, and has responsibilities of the household and her kids to fulfil. You cannot be a stay-at-home mom, as you need to think of the expenses. So, even though you know that staying with your children throughout their growing-up years is important, you cannot spend all your time rearing them. The situation for those single mothers, who are not well off gets even worse. It is a tough job to plan your expenses and yet have savings through a single paycheck.

Social pressures of getting married

Many single mothers have experienced that in India, there’s always a pressure of getting married. “Society conveniently ignores the complex family bond that might get created if a single mother remarries. It’s (remarriage) a risk, which may work or may fail miserably. But as a single parent, unsolicited advice is bound to come your way,” says Dr Rao.

Tackling difficult questions

Single mothers often tackle difficult questions from their children, who want to know about the family dynamics, which are perhaps different from their friends’. It becomes challenging for single moms to explain the situation to them so that they know how to respond to the awkward and inevitable questions that come their way about their father. For that, amidst juggling work and household chores, single moms need to spend time with their kids and understand their needs and problems, which becomes challenging. “A lot of single mothers visit me. They suffer from anxiety and depression. They become over-protective about their children. At times, they over-compensate for the missing parent and tend to get harsh on themselves. They feel hurt when the child doesn’t reciprocate or respond to their feelings appropriately,” says Dr Rohann Bokdawala, psychiatrist.

Single mother affected by polio motivates daughter to dream

Single mother and affected by polio, Satheeswari P, has just one dream — to see her daughter Om Sneha become an IAS officer. And Sneha, from the government girls high school in Ashok Nagar, took first steps towards that journey on Thursday. She topped the Class XII exams at her school and scored a centum in accountancy.

“My mother faced a lot of difficulties and I have always wanted to fulfil her dream. I want to become the youngest IAS officer and serve the country,” said Sneha who scored 577 out of 600.

Satheeswari was affected by polio when she was just a year old. Her father abandoned her even before she was born and her mother raised her alone.

“My family supported me till I got a job. I came to Chennai alone when I was 36 and did many odd jobs. Now I am an assistant section officer at Dr MGR Medical University. I have always taught her to be independent,” said Satheeswari.

Sneha said she was aware of the difficulties her mother aced and that motivated her the most. “I want to be the best daughter,” she said.

The girl said her teachers encouraged her to perform better.

“Though I topped, I feel that I let them down as I did not score a centum in commerce,” she said.

Right to travel abroad is an important basic human right, Supreme Court

The right to travel abroad is an important basic human right and also extends to private life, the Supreme Court held in its recent order.

While hearing an appeal filed by IPS Officer Satish Chandra Verma, who was denied permission to travel abroad on account of a pending departmental inquiry against him, the Supreme Court Bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and MR Shah held,

“The right to travel abroad is an important basic human right for it nourishes independent and self-determining creative character of the individual, not only by extending his freedoms of action, but also by extending the scope of his experience. The right also extends to private life; marriage, family and friendship are humanities which can be rarely affected through refusal of freedom to go abroad and clearly show that this freedom is a genuine human right. ”

The appellant is an Inspector General of Police/Principal, Central Training College, Central Reserve Police Force at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Admittedly, there is a departmental inquiry pending against the appellant, on account of which the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) denied him permission to take a private trip abroad. This decision of the CAT was upheld by the Madras High Court.

The appellant, represented by Senior Counsel Indira Jaising, had apprised the Court that there were no criminal cases against him, and that the initiation of the departmental inquiry against him was under challenge. The Bench was also informed about the previous instance in 2017 when the appellant was granted permission to travel abroad by the Supreme Court.

The Court directed Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee to take instructions from the Centre as to whether it had any serious objection to the appellant travelling abroad.

After placing reliance on its judgment in the case of Maneka Gandhi vs Union of India, wherein the right to travel was upheld, the Bench set aside the order of the High Court.

Thus, it was held that a pending departmental inquiry cannot be a ground to keep the appellant from travelling abroad. The Court found no reason for the Government of India to deny permission to the appellant, and directed the Centre to permit the appellant to travel abroad.

தஞ்சாவூர்: தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டத்தில், ப்ளஸ் 2 தேர்வில், 91.05 சதவீத மாணவ - மாணவியர் தேர்ச்சி, கஜாவால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பகுதிகளில், 15 அரசு பள்ளிகள், 100 சதவீத தேர்ச்சியை பெற்று சாதனை படைத்துள்ளன.

கடந்த மார்ச் மாதம் நடைபெற்ற, பிளஸ் 2 பொதுத் தேர்வில், தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள, 217 பள்ளிகளைச் சேர்ந்த, 12,661 மாணவர்களும், 16,203 மாணவியரும் என, மொத்தம், 28,864 மாணவ, மாணவியர் தேர்வு எழுதினர். தேர்வு முடிவுகள் நேற்று வெளியானது. இதில், 11,083 மாணவர்களும், 15,199 மாணவியரும் என, 26,282 மாணவ - மாணவியர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர். மாநில அளவில் தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டம் தேர்ச்சி விழுக்காட்டில் 91.05 சதவீதம் பெற்று, 17வது இடத்தில் உள்ளது. இதில், 16 அரசு பள்ளிகள் 100 சதவீத தேர்ச்சியை பெற்றுள்ளது.

Homeopaths with stocks of allopathy medicines: FDA seeks reply

MUMBAI: The state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent letters to around 25 homeopaths from Dombivli, asking them to explain their large stocks of allopathic drugs. Though homeopaths cannot store or dispense allopathic drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, the practice is mostly overlooked due to factors ranging from shortage of MBBS practitioners to state's empathic stance towards crosspathy.

The drug regulator is believed to have come across several "big" purchases made by homeopaths from wholesalers that was revealed during auditing of bills in March. The FDA's Thane branch has sought answers from the practitioners of alternative medicine as to whether the drugs were indeed purchased by them, how they were stored and dispensed. 

Senior FDA officials have said that the exercise is unlikely to be extended beyond Dombivli, for now.

"We were surprised to find homeopaths storing allopathy drugs in such huge quantities. There was anything between four and 10 bills for each doctor. Dombivli is not a village. There are 400 chemists, so what is the need to store medicines?" said an FDA official, adding that in the past, practitioners have been found handing out loose medicines. "Some also store injectables and steroids without following storage conditions," the official said. He added that the exercise was also meant to check if wholesalers were fudging records.

Bank unions urge govt to take over Jet Airways

Bank unions on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take over grounded Jet Airways to secure the future of the 22,000-odd employees of the carrier.

In a letter to Modi, the All-India Bank Employees Association also said government must ensure that banks are not forced to lend to the crippled airline.

After flying for 25 years, Jet Airways on Wednesday announced grounding of operations after its lenders declined an interim funding of ₹400-crore. “We learn that banks have invited bids of possible investors to take over the airline. If it does not happen, we urge you to take over the airline so that the jobs of these 22,000 employees are safe,” the association said.

At the same time the unions opposed any move to force banks to lend more money to the airline.

“Everyone is looking at the banks to bail out the airline as though lenders are the owners,” the unions said, demanding an enquiry into the affairs of Jet.

The attempts to sidetrack the whole issue by building pressure on the banks to extend further loan and save the company is only with a view to keep Naresh Goyal out of the picture whereas he is the real man who is answerable for the whole crisis, the unions claimed.

“We seek the immediate intervention of the government so that banks are not pressurised to dole out more money,” the letter said.

The airline owes more than ₹8,500 crore to banks and around ₹4,000 crore to its vendors and aircraft lessors and months of salaries to the employees apart from thousands of crores of rupees in ticket refunds to passengers.

That apart, it has an accumulated loss of over ₹13,000 crore. A consortium of banks led by State Bank of India (SBI) had said they were hopeful of a successful bidding process for stake sale in the airline. AGENCIES

Vijay Shetty, driver of a bus that plies on Mangaluru-Shivamogga route, on Thursday, showed his commitment to the electoral process by making time to vote despite his hectic schedule.

A video clip of Shetty sprinting to the polling booth has gone viral. Shetty stopped the bus, which had many passengers, in front of his polling station at Beluvai near Moodbidri just to cast his vote.

When Shetty, who works for Jayaraj Travels, ran into the polling booth, passengers were understandably puzzled. Later, they realised his intention when he returned within minutes, finger suitably inked, and resumed the trip.

The incident was captured by an undentified person who posted it on social media. Hundreds of people have been sharing the video with their own two bits about the importance of voting.

Shetty, who is a resident of Kukkadelu village at Kanthavara near Karakala, Udupi district, said he always makes it a point to vote. “I cast my vote without making passengers wait for too long,” said Shetty, a bus driver for the past 10 years.

Dakshina Kannada’s Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation committee chairman and zilla panchayat chief executive officer R Selvamani said they will honour Shetty. “Let this motivate all voters,” Selvamani said.

Many miss jam-packed Antyodaya express on election eve, want mobile ticketing

The huge rush at Tambaram station for Nagercoil Antyodaya Express on the eve of the LS election has exposed a major chink in the armour of railways as far as passenger amenities are concerned.

The unreserved train is preferred by middle and lower middle class passengers and on election eve, almost everyone header for home in central and southern districts of the state wanted to take it.

However, many failed to get tickets due to long queues at ticket booking counters. ‘UTS on mobile’ app for unreserved ticketing system couldn’t be of any help.

This is because the Indian Railways mobile-ticketing system does not allow passengers to book m-tickets for Antyodaya Express trains. Ticket fare for these trains is 15% more than regular fare.

“The app is not designed for revised fare. Railway has already written to the Railway Board twice to bring in this feature,” said a senior official who is aware of passenger requests for the same. It would not require a major change, just a few codes would have to be rewritten, the official said. The express was so full of passengers, many of whom were precariously standing on footboard.

It is an extremely popular train, said A Giri, a railway passenger activist based in Thanjavur. Even on regular days it is highly patronised, he added. Mobile ticketing was introduced by railways as part of their ‘mission five minutes’, where one can avoid queues and book ticket before coming to the station.

So how did it happen? Was the poll official who did it so starstruck when Rajinikanth came to vote that he couldn’t tell right from left? And what was the superstar thinking? Rajinikanth is not new to controversy when it comes to polling. Case name: Anjitha K Jose & anr. v. State of Kerala & ors.

In the case, the Petitioners, students of Respondent College namely, Sree Kerala Varma College have challenged instructions issued by the College pertaining to maintenance of discipline in hostel. The Petitioners in the case averred that the instructions issued by the college were in violation of the UGC (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2015 as well as the fundamental rights of the students.

The excerpts from the instructions which were challenged are reproduced herein below:

The High Court of Kerala, while striking down some of the instructions made the following noteworthy observations in the case:

The Court while striking down instruction stating that no boarder shall take no active part in political meetings and propaganda opined that the instruction had nothing to do with the object of maintain disciple in the hostel and that it is the fundamental right of every citizen to take part in political views as part of freedom of speech and expression.

The Court while striking down instruction pertaining to boarders attending movies and pictures, the High Court observed that the moral choice of the management is attempted to be imposed upon the boarders. The moral paternalism is something to be frowned upon. A girl is having equal freedom similar to a boy. There are no similar restriction in the boy’s hostel.

The aforesaid observations made by Justice A Muhamed Mushtaq is indeed a noteworthy and progressive one and takes us a step further towards women empowerment in India. There are several institutions in India including some premier institutions and colleges which have different set of rules for girl’s hostel and boy’s hostel, wherein the rules regulating boy’s hostel are far more liberal as compared to that of girls. The primary duty of every institution or for that matter the State should be to ensure safety of women and not stifle their freedom under the garb of making rules to maintain discipline.

Case name: Hindustan Newsprint Limited v. T.C. Mani

The issue that arose for consideration for Division Bench of the High Court of Kerala in the case was whether the respondent who has retired from the services of the appellant as Executive in the year 2003 was entitled for promotion as Assistant Manager in the year 1997?

The appellant in the case alleged that the respondent was not fit for promotion in view of the one of the clauses of Appellant company’s promotion policy enumerating the criteria/eligibility for promotion. According to the Policy on being eligible for promotion, the first line executive in E-1 posts will be considered for promotion in their unit to the extent vacancies are available. If vacancies are not available, those with consistent Good record of performance will be considered.

The facts of the case noted that the respondent being an Engineering Diploma holder should have a consistent record of performance for a period of seven years in order to be considered by the Departmental Promotion Committee. However, the respondent had only a consistent record of performance for three years as performance of the respondent and was not ‘good’ consistently for seven years.

In view of the facts and circumstances of the case, the Division Bench of the High Court of Kerala denied promotion to the respondent in terms of the Promotion Policy and was of the view that the respondent did not have consistent record of good performance for seven years in order to be eligible for promotion.

கூகுள் சிஇஓ சுந்தர் பிச்சை சென்னை வந்து வாக்களித்ததாக நெட்டிசன்கள் கொண்டாடிவருகின்றனர். இதுதொடர்பான பிச்சையின் புகைப்படமும் வைரலாகி வருகிறது. இது உண்மையா?

மக்களவைக்கான இரண்டாம் கட்டத் தேர்தல் தமிழகம், கர்நாடகா, மேற்கு வங்கம், அசாம் மற்றும் மணிப்பூர் ஆகிய மாநிலங்களில் நடைபெறுகிறது. இதுதொடர்பாக சமூக வலைதளங்களில் விழிப்புணர்வுப் பிரச்சாரங்கள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

அந்த வகையில் கூகுள் நிறுவனத்தின் சிஇஓவான சுந்தர்பிச்சை ஓட்டு போடுவதற்காக சென்னை வந்துள்ளதாக செய்திகள் பரவின. தமிழ் சினிமா ரசிர்கள் பலர், விஜய் நடித்த 'சர்கார்' படத்தை நினைவுகூர்ந்தனர். அப்படத்தில் சுந்தர் பிச்சையின் கேரக்டரை உள்வாங்கி சுந்தர் ராமசாமியாக நடித்திருப்பார் விஜய். ஓட்டு போடுவதற்காகவே அமெரிக்காவில் இருந்து விஜய், சென்னை வருவார்.

அதேபோல 'ஒரு விரல் புரட்சி' செய்ய, சுந்தர் பிச்சையும் சென்னை வந்துள்ளதாக சமூக வலைதளங்களில், புகைப்படத்தோடு செய்திகளும் பதிவுகளும் வைரலாகி வருகின்றன. சுந்தர் பிச்சை வாக்களிக்க சென்னை வந்துள்ளது உண்மையா?

மதுரையில் பிறந்தவரான சுந்தர் பிச்சை, சென்னை அசோக் நகரில் பள்ளிப்படிப்பை முடித்தார். ஐஐடி காரக்பூரில் இளங்கலை பொறியியல் படிப்பைப் படித்தவர், எம்.எஸ். படிப்பை ஸ்டான்ஃபோர்டு பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் முடித்தார். பென்சில்வேனியாவில் எம்பிஏ படித்தார்.

அதைத் தொடர்ந்து அமெரிக்க மேலாண்மை நிறுவனமொன்றில் பணியாற்றிய சுந்தர் பிச்சை, 2004-ல் கூகுளில் இணைந்தார். படிப்படியாக உயர்ந்தவர் தற்போது கூகுள் சிஇஓவாகப் பணியாற்றுகிறார்.

அமெரிக்கக் குடியுரிமை பெற்றவரான சுந்தர் பிச்சைக்கு இந்தியாவில் ஓட்டுரிமை இல்லை. அதனால் வாக்களிக்க அவர் சென்னை வரமுடியாது.

இளைஞர்களுடன் அவர் சென்னையில் இருப்பதாகப் பகிரப்பட்ட போட்டோ, உண்மையில் 2017-ல் மேற்கு வங்கத்தில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட புகைப்படமாகும். இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், தான் படித்த காரக்பூர் ஐஐடிக்கு அவர் வந்தபோது எடுத்த புகைப்படம் அது.

அப்போது சுமார் 3,000 மாணவர்களுடன் இந்தியாவின் ஸ்டார்ட் அப் சூழல் குறித்தும் டிஜிட்டல் பொருளாதாரம் குறித்தும் விவாதித்தார். இதை அவரே தனது ட்வீட்டில் தெரிவித்திருந்தது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

தமிழகம் முழுவதும், மீண்டும், 500, 2,000 ரூபாய் நோட்டுக்கள் அதிகம் புழக்கத்திற்கு வந்துள்ளதால், சில்லறை தர முடியாமல், வியாபாரிகள் தவிக்கின்றனர். லோக்சபா தேர்தல் அறிவிப்புக்கு பின், மாநிலம் முழுவதும், 500, 2,000 ரூபாய் நோட்டுக்கள் திடீரென மாயமானது. வாக்காளர்களுக்கு வழங்குவதற்காக, அரசியல் கட்சியினர், அவற்றை பதுக்குவதாக தகவல்கள் வெளியானது. வங்கிகளின், ஏ.டி.எம்., இயந்திரங்களிலும், 100 ரூபாய், 200 ரூபாய் அதிகம் வழங்கப்பட்டது, பொதுமக்களிடம் சந்தேகத்தை அதிகரித்தது.

சேலம் மாவட்டத்தில் நேற்று காலை வெயிலின் தாக்கம் அதிகமாக இருந்தது. இதையடுத்து மாவட்டத்தின் பல்வேறு இடங்களில் மாலையில் திடீரென வானம் மேகமூட்டத்துடன் காணப்பட்டது. பின்னர் சில இடங்களில் மழை பெய்தது. சங்ககிரி சுற்று வட்டார பகுதிகளில் சூறைக் காற்றுடன் பலத்த மழை பெய்தது. இதில் சங்ககிரி சுங்கச்சாவடி மேற்கூரை பெயர்ந்து தூக்கி வீசப்பட்டது. அருகில் இருந்த இரும்பு கம்பம் முறிந்து தொங்கியது. மேலும் சுங்கச்சாவடியில் இருந்த வழிகாட்டி பலகைகள் பலத்த காற்றினால் உடைந்து கீழே விழுந்தன. இதில் யாருக்கும் பாதிப்பு ஏற்படவில்லை.

ஆவரங்கம்பாளையம் பகுதியில் இருந்த உயரமான விளம்பர இரும்பு கம்பம் முறிந்து அருகில் உள்ள ஓட்டல் மீது விழுந்தது. இதில் ஓட்டல் பலத்த சேதம் அடைந்தது. மேலும் மின் கம்பமும் உடைந்து விழுந்தது. இதன் காரணமாக சங்ககிரி பகுதியில் சுமார் 2 மணி நேரம் மின்சாரம் தடைபட்டது. சங்ககிரியில் நாடாளுமன்ற தேர்தல் நடைபெற்றதால் பலத்த காற்றால் வாக்குச்சாவடிகளில் மின் தடை ஏற்பட்டது. இதனால் போதிய வெளிச்சம் இல்லாததால் வாக்காளர்களுக்கு சின்னம் தெரியவில்லை அதனால் வாக்காளர்கள் அவதிபட்டனர். வாக்குச்சாவடி மைய அதிகாரிகள் தங்களுடைய செல்போன் வெளிச்சத்தில் வாக்காளர்கள் வாக்கு அளிக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்தது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ஜலகண்டாபுரம் மற்றும் சுற்று வட்டார பகுதிகளில் திடீரென சூறைக்காற்றுடன் பலத்த மழை பெய்தது. இந்த மழையால் மரங்கள் சாய்ந்து விழுந்தது. மின் கம்பங்கள் உடைந்து விழுந்ததால் மின் இணைப்பு துண்டிக்கப்பட்டது. இதையொட்டி வாக்குச்சாவடியில் ஓட்டு போட சென்ற வாக்காளர்கள் சின்னம் சரியாக தெரியாததால் மிகுந்த சிரமத்திற்கு உள்ளாகினர்.

சூரப்பள்ளி, ஆவடத்தூர், சவூரியூர், தோரமங்கலம், கரிக்காப்பட்டி ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் மாலையில் மழை பெய்தது. சூரப்பள்ளியில் மரங்கள் முறிந்து சாலையில் விழுந்தன. இதனால் போக்குவரத்து பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. மேலும் இந்த பகுதியில் மின்கம்பங்கள் காற்றினால் உடைந்து விழுந்தது. இதனால் ஜலகண்டாபுரம் சுற்றுப்புறப்பகுதியை சேர்ந்த அனைத்து பகுதிகளிலும் மின்சாரம் தடைபட்டது.

எடப்பாடி பூலாம்பட்டி, சித்தூர், ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் சூறைக்காற்றுடன் பலத்தமழை பெய்தது. வேப்பமரத்துபட்டி பகுதியில் 3 மின்கம்பங்கள் ஒடிந்து விழுந்தது. பூலாம்பட்டியை அடுத்த கூடக்கல் பகுதியில் சுமார் 500-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட வாழை மரங்கள் சாய்ந்தன. மேலும் வயல்களில் மழை நீர் தேங்கியது. இதில் பருத்தி, நெல், எள் போன்ற பயிர்கள் தண்ணீரில் மூழ்கின.

மாலையில் பெய்த மழையால் வாக்குப்பதிவு சிறிது நேரம் தாமதம் ஆனது. அதைதொடர்ந்து மழை நின்று போனதால் வாக்குப்பதிவு மாலை 6 மணி வரை மீண்டும் நடைபெற்றது.

ஏற்காட்டில் இடியுடன் கூடிய பலத்த மழை பெய்தது. இந்த மழை சுமார் 2 மணி நேரம் நீடித்தது. இதையொட்டி ஏற்காடு பகுதிகளில் மின் இணைப்பு துண்டிக்கப்பட்டது. இதைத்தொடர்ந்து சுமார் 5 மணி நேரத்திற்கு பின்பு மின் இணைப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டது. மேலும் நாகலூர், கரடியூர், கொளகூர், சொரக்காப்பட்டி, பூமரத்தூர், முளுவி, புத்தூர் ஆகிய கிராமங்களுக்கு மின் இணைப்பு துண்டிக்கப்பட்டது. இந்த கிராமங்களுக்கு இன்று (வெள்ளிக்கிழமை) காலை மின் இணைப்பு வழங்கப்படும் என அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

மேச்சேரி சந்தைப்பேட்டை பகுதியில் மழை பெய்தது. இதனிடையே சந்தைப்பேட்டை அருகே உள்ள தொடக்கப்பள்ளி வாக்குச்சாவடியில் வாக்காளர்கள் வாக்குகளை பதிவு செய்தனர். இதையொட்டி அ.தி.மு.க., பா.ம.க.வை சேர்ந்த கட்சி பிரமுகர் மரத்தடியில் அமர்ந்து வாக்காளர்களுக்கு பூத் சிலிப் வழங்கி கொண்டு இருந்தனர். அப்போது அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் மீது மின்னல் தாக்கியது.

இதில் எறப்பரெட்டியூர்காட்டுவளவை சேர்ந்த அ.தி.மு.க. பிரமுகர்கள் கோவிந்தன் (வயது 48), சூராக்கவுண்டன்காட்டுவளவை சேர்ந்த லோகநாதன் (33), பெரியசாமி (31), எறப்பரெட்டியூரை சேர்ந்த பா.ம.க.பிரமுகர்கள் குமார் (40), ரெட்டியூரைசேர்ந்த பிரபு (36) ஆகியோரை மின்னல் தாக்கியது. இதில் அவர்கள் 5 பேரும் காயமடைந்தனர். இதையடுத்து லோகநாதன், பெரியசாமி, குமார், பிரபு ஆகியோருக்கு மேச்சேரி அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டது. கோவிந்தனுக்கு சேலத்தில் உள்ள தனியார் ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

120 விமானங்களை வைத்துக்கொண்டு இந்தியா முழுவதும் மட்டுமல்லாமல், உலகின் பல நாடுகளுக்கும் இந்தியாவில் இருந்து இந்த விமானங்கள் பறந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. 22 ஆயிரம் ஊழியர்கள் இந்த நிறுவனத்தில் பணிபுரிந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக நஷ்டத்தில் மூழ்கிக்கொண்டிருந்த இந்த நிறுவனம், விமான எண்ணிக்கைகளை குறைத்துக்கொண்டே வந்தது. கடைசியாக கடந்த செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை 5 விமானங்கள்தான் பறந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. தினமும் 650 விமான சேவைகளை இயக்கிக்கொண்டிருந்த இந்த நிறுவனம் மிகவும் பரிதாபகரமான நிலைக்கு தள்ளப்பட்டது. உதவிக்கரம் இல்லாமல் இந்த நிறுவனம் நஷ்டத்தில் இருந்து மீளமுடியவில்லை.

கடந்த 2018 டிசம்பர் மாத கணக்குப்படி, இந்த விமான நிறுவனத்தின் நஷ்டம் ரூ.7 ஆயிரத்து 654 கோடியாக இருந்தது. கடந்த ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்டு மாதமே இந்த விமான நிறுவனத்துக்கு இருண்டகாலம் தொடங்கியது. நஷ்டத்தை சரிகட்ட ஊழியர்களெல்லாம் 25 சதவீத சம்பள குறைப்பை தாங்கிக்கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்று கூறியது. விமானிகளுக்கும், பராமரிப்பு பொறியாளர்கள், மூத்த நிர்வாகிகளுக்கும் ஜனவரி மாதம்முதல் சம்பளம் வழங்கப்படவில்லை. மற்ற ஊழியர்களுக்கு மார்ச் மாதம் முதல் சம்பளம் வழங்கப்படவில்லை. விமானிகளெல்லாம் வேலை நிறுத்தத்தில் ஈடுபடப்போகிறோம் என்ற அறிவிப்பை வெளியிட்டு இருந்தனர். முதலில் ஸ்டேட் வங்கி உள்பட வங்கிகள் அடங்கிய கூட்டமைப்பு அவசர நிதி உதவியாக ரூ.1,500 கோடி வழங்குவதாக தெரிவித்தது, கொஞ்சம் நம்பிக்கையை ஊட்டியது. ஆனால் நேற்று முன்தினம் இரவு தங்களால் கடன் வழங்க முடியாது என்று திட்டவட்டமாக அறிவித்தவுடன், வேறு வழியில்லாமல் விமான சேவையை ஜெட் ஏர்வேஸ் நிறுவனம் நிறுத்திக்கொண்டது. கடைசியாக கடந்த செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை இந்த நிறுவனம் ரூ.983 கோடி கடன் உதவி உடனடியாக வேண்டும் என்று அபயகுரல் எழுப்பியும் யாரும் கடன் வழங்க முன்வரவில்லை.

CHENNAI : Elections in many parts of Chennai turned out to be a low-key bribing affair for political parties. Political cadre were seen distributing ‘biryani’ packets and bottles of alcohol to those willing to sell their votes. This resulted in good business for biryani centres, which received hundreds of orders an hour. In most cases, the biryani and alcohol were distributed to voters by party cadre entrusted with handing out voting tokens.

”The Election Commission does not have the manpower to give voting slips to people. So, we offered to help them,” said a party functionary at Chitlapakkam, claiming it also gave them an opportunity to remind voters of the ‘political conditions in the country’ before they cast their vote. “They asked us to vote for their party and so we will get free food,” said Kumara Guru*, a resident of Robertson lane at Mandaveli, claiming he was whisked away by partymen after he cast his vote and was given Biriyani packets after he confirmed he had voted for their party.



He claimed his wife and parents received packets from four different political parties, shedding light on the extent of the ‘food for votes’ bribery that was in play in the city on poll day. Interestingly, it was not just the party cadre that was feeding people with bribes, in some cases people insisted on taking bribes for votes. “Do you want our votes or not?,” asked a woman demanding lunch for her entire family from the cadre after receiving her voting token at Sembakkam, near Tambaram.

In most of these cases, the bribes were given by the party along with the voting tokens and took place in close proximity to polling stations, but election officials turned a blind eye to it. “It is true, we don’t have enough people to give voting tokens to people,” said an election official at a polling station at Tambaram.

CHENNAI : Thousands of inter-city bus commuters across Tamil Nadu, specifically in Chennai and Coimbatore, were left in a lurch as the State Transport department failed to make necessary arrangements. Visuals of commuters travelling on rooftops of buses went viral on social media. Most of the commuters said they were going home to cast their votes and also for the extended weekend.

In Chennai, several commuters were left stranded at the Koyambedu bus terminus throughout Wednesday night. The transport department, however, maintained that regular buses were plying as per schedule. The hassle, they said, was due to extra rush of passengers travelling to vote and for Chitra Pournami. Around 1 am, a group of infuriated commuters staged a road blockade on the inner ring road and police resorted to lathi-charge.



Meanwhile, in Coimbatore, hundreds of irate commuters blocked roads and staged protests on Wednesday night near the Singanallur bus stand. Public blamed the authorities for not making enough arrangements for them to go home and cast their vote. Long queues were seen at the new bus stand near Saibaba Temple and at the Gandhipuram bus stand. “There are 200 buses leaving from Singanallur bus stand to southern districts on a daily basis. In view of elections and Chitra Pournami, we have been operating an additional 153 buses since Tuesday evening. But the crowd witnessed is unprecedented,” said an official.

Mahadevan Thangaraj, an engineer working in Chennai, tweeted: “9.30 pm to midnight: by bike from Nungambakkam to Perungalathur; heavy traffic. 12.30 to 08.00 am: to Madurai in the hot seat of bus driver cabin. 8.30 to 11.00 am: Standing in bus to Thoothukudi. 11.45 am: cast my vote.”

Speaking to the media after casting his vote, Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar said in Karur: “We did not expect so many people would be travelling. We have made all arrangements for their return journey.” Roads leading into the city were jammed due to heavy traffic on Wednesday night.In a statement, the Transport department said that in addition to 2,950 regular buses, 1,510 special buses were operated from Chennai to cater for the passengers.

Jet employee’s daughter starts an online petition to save father’s job

A Delhi-based Jet Airways employee’s 17-year-old daughter has started a petition on change.org, appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, SBI, and the aviation ministry to ensure the beleaguered airline’s survival.

The petition, started on Wednesday, had nearly 50,000 signatories by 8pm on Thursday. “We have been anxious since the day Jet started cancelling flights. Many of the employees who could lose their jobs are sole earning members of their families. Their future is at stake,” Sanjana Singh told TOI.

In her petition, the Class XII student wrote, “The lender’s revival plan was the only ray of hope for us. But all these hopes now seem shattered. Our livelihood was completely dependent on Jet Airways.”

The teenager, while admitting that she did not expect such massive support from common people, added that the petition has raised her hopes of a “solution.”

“My father has been associated with Jet Airways for more than 20 years. But at this stage, loss of his job will be a huge setback to our family. We would need to compromise with our dreams and aspirations. Even pursuing my education would become quite difficult. We are also citizens of India. Seeking help from the Prime Minister is our right,” the petition reads.

AMMK button missing on EVM, sparks protest

Polling was stopped at a booth in Thiruvadigai near Panruti in the Cuddalore parliamentary constituency after a voter, who could not find a button against the AMMK’s candidate Kasi Thangavel on the EVM, alerted the poll officials.

By the time, 387 of the 657 voters in the booth had cast their votes. AMMK supporters gathered soon and demanded repolling in the booth. A team of paramilitary forces arrived at the booth and removed the partymen. Polling resumed after four hours in the booth while the AMMK’s supporters continued their protest outside. The party has decided to take a legal route insisting for repolling at the booth and initiating action against the erring poll officials.

“We die alone, but some of us die more alone than others, with no money, no family. We want to change that,” said Khaalid Ahamed.

Khaalid and nine others, all aged between 22 and 24, formed a group called Uravugal. This group includes software engineers, students, doctors and young entrepreneurs and they provide a dignified cremation to unclaimed bodies that have been lying in hospitals for months. Khaalid, the founder of the group, is a 23-year-old entrepreneur.

The idea came to him during late 2017, when Khaalid and his friends were walking and suddenly met a weak elderly homeless man, who was allegedly abandoned by his son. When they asked him if he wanted any help, he said, “I don’t want to die alone, just be there by my side when they bury me,” recalled Khaalid. “It didn’t make much sense then. But the next day when we walked the same path, we found him dead. His body was then taken to the government hospital morgue and after the police couldn’t trace his family, we came forward to do the funeral service,” he said.

That incident moved Khaalid, who then brought together his friends and acquaintances. They began roaming on the streets, talking to homeless people asking their needs and demands. “One of their most common need was to have a dignified funeral,” said Abdul Rehman, a 23-year-old IT professional.

“This made us question so many aspects of life and death, especially concerning the homeless. It also exposed us to an all new world which we were not even aware of and some that we used to take for granted. It was then we decided to commit,” said Abdul, who mostly spends his mornings providing funeral services to the homeless dead, and then heads to office later in the night.

In the last one-and-half years, the group has buried 250 unclaimed bodies of homeless people, with the help of its growing number of volunteers. They share a WhatsApp group with the local police, who call them to offer funeral services, if they are unable to trace the family of the deceased. The bodies are usually kept in the morgue of a government hospital for about 25 days for identification. They cremate them at the burial grounds in Meenambakkam, Otteri, Moolakothalam and other areas.

“We follow no caste or creed; whoever wants to say prayers during the burial, Islamic or Hindu, says it,”said Abdul.

The group pays for all expenses and have pooled in money to buy a van to transport the bodies. They now have a growing number of volunteers.

“Whenever we get a message, anyone who is free goes to the spot. Sometimes, I go when needed, even if I am in class. My professors know how much this means to me,” said Vigneshwaran, a 21-yearold final year student at Loyola Institute of Technology. He recalled an experience, which he claims has helped him ‘grow’.

“Once, police found a dead homeless man’s son. He came with us to the burial ground, but stood far and refused to touch his father’s body. He reasoned that he did not want to catch an infection. He had found his father after six months and this was his response,” he said.

“People sometimes tell us that we have chosen an uncommon cause and we are too young for it. But we hope to keep it up, since it has helped us become better people,” said Vigneshwaran.

Pallavaram residents await drainage connections

Residents of Skypark Residences, a gated community along the 200-feet Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram Radial Road, are running from pillar to post to get a functional underground drainage system (UGD), despite having paid the deposit and house service connection charges to the Pallavaram Municipality.

The municipality has collected a deposit charge of ₹10,000 and house service connection charge of ₹510 from each of the 73 owners of occupied apartments.

“After the construction of the residential complex with 207 flats, the builder had paid ₹2,07,000 towards the installation of UGD. The owners had to shell out ₹10,000 per head even before occupying the flats in 2016. But no UGD connection has been provided to the apartments. In April 2018, the municipality had informed that work to provide house connections will begin and collected the house service connection charges,” said V Ramakrishnan, president of Skypark Residences flat owners association.

Municipality had passed work orders to provide UGD connection between the apartments and the drain network along Ganapathypuram Main Road that lies behind the complex. “But the work never started. When the issue was raised with the officials, they said they will not be able to provide the connection as the network along Ganapathypuram Main Road will not be able to handle the capacity of waste generated from the apartments, and the connection will now have to be laid from the Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram Radial Road which lies in front of the apartment,” said K Divakar, a resident of the apartment.

“As the apartment complex lies on a lower terrain than the 200-feet road, we would incur additional expenditure to get the UGD network. It is the municipality’s duty to provide us with amenities but despite taking our money, they are unable to do so,” he added, saying that they are demanding additional money to give a functional network.

The residents have filed an appeal with the Tamil Nadu Local Bodies Ombudsman and are awaiting for its decision.

“Around 50% of the waste generated is processed at the sewage treatment plant on the premises of the gated complex. For the rest, we are dependent on sewage tankers, which burn a hole in our pockets. This, despite, giving money to the municipality to get a functional UGD connection,” said Thilak Lohiya, another resident.

Moreover, the residents have been charged ₹1,500 as UGD charges as a component of their half-yearly property tax that they pay to the municipality.

“After the service connection charges of ₹510 per flat were collected since April 2018, the UGD component of ₹1,500 has been incorporated into our property tax demand notice. This is without us availing the facility,” said Ramakrishnan.

Pallavaram municipality officials were not available for comment despite repeated attempts. Municipal commissioner M Senthilmurugan said he was busy with election work and will be able to respond on the issue the following week.

New terminal at city airport to be more disabled-friendly

The new integrated terminal, which is under construction, at the city airport will be more disabled-friendly.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has begun training its engineers to create such inclusive facilities as part of an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) programme.

Work to construct the integrated terminal in the space between the domestic and international terminal began last July. The building, which can be used for both domestic and international flights, is scheduled to be completed in three years and will have the best of facilities including automation for passenger access, an official said.

Engineers were being trained to ensure that they are sensitive to the needs of disabled passengers when designing or approving designs of passenger amenities inside the new building, the official said.

The move is part the ICAO requirement to improve airports following complaints from passengers that terminal and boarding facilities are not disabled-friendly. The AAI has nominated engineers for the programme which will be conducted in Delhi.

The aim is to “prepare the engineers with knowledge and skills needed to create and maintain infrastructure at airports to help passengers with reduced mobility to pass through an airport in a safe and efficient manner”.

The training will help engineers identify the special needs of the disabled and introduce appropriate facilities at different locations.

“We have started to train our engineers as many airport terminals are being upgraded. This [training] will help with the work being carried out in the Chennai airport as well,” said an official.

Though Chennai airport’s existing terminals were opened in 2013, toilets, lifts and boarding gates are not easily accessible to disabled passengers. Overall, the building offers better access to the disabled but, due to the work going on, passengers undergo certain inconveniences. Due to the construction work, boarding is done using shuttle buses.

Officials said the airport will be able to handle a capacity of nearly 30 million passengers per year once work is finished.

Unlike the promises politicians make, voters in Chennai got the discounts they were promised by several businesses, big and small. A meat vendor at Ayanavaram who had vowed to hive off ₹50 on one kg of chicken bought by those who had voted, kept his word.

In fact, Murali Babu gave discounts to customers who had their fingers inked irrespective of the quantity they bought, even if it was as little as 250 grams. Not that he was complaining. He ended up selling 2,446kg of chicken on Thursday against 600 kg on other days. “I did not expect such an increase in sales. More than the sales, I am happy about people’s enthusiasm to vote. More voters turned up at the shop between 9am and noon and from 6pm to 9pm,” said Babu.

“He gave discount irrespective of the quantity we purchased. All were treated equally. This is the first time we are getting such an offer. This is a real motivation,” said Subbiah, who had come from Trichy to vote.

Clarion Hotel President, at R K Salai in Mylapore, kept its promise of a 50% discount for guests who could show proof of voting. The discount was given on breakfast, lunch or dinner buffet. “At least 35 people turned up, mostly families,” said a hotel official. Some of them first checked that the hotel offered a 50% discount and then went to cast their votes.

A buffet is normally priced between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000.

The Lattice Café on LB Road in Adyar welcomed customers with a board, which read: “Show your inked finger and get 20% off on your bill.” “This is a unique initiative in sync with our motto of celebrating the election, as I had felt that the spirit of voters was not high every time,” said M Saran Reddy, owner of Lattice Cafe.

“We are happy that the people have matched our enthusiasm this time,” he added.

“We are first-time voters. We shared this offer on WhatsApp and met for lunch after voting,” said Swetha, a firsttime voter from Adyar.

Apart from them, a photo studio owner came up with a unique offer. “Many of them turned up to take a photo showing their inked finger and wanted to laminate them,” said Karthik, owner of Amman Studio at MMDA Colony said many voters turned up for his offer of a 50% discount on photographs taken on Thursday.

The Bata showroom in R K Mutt Road sent messages to its customers offering a 10% discount — to those who voted — on purchases made until Friday. Not many were surprised that the Chennai corporation, which had promised to distribute buttermilk to help voters beat the heat, failed to keep its word.

The situation in the city resembled a ‘bandh’ on Thursday when LS elections were held in Tamil Nadu, with most thoroughfares, including arterial Anna Salai and Poonamallee High Road, almost deserted. Shops, business establishments and shopping malls were shut and movie shows were cancelled during the day.

Worst hit by the closure of eateries and restaurants were bachelors, who were scouring the city for a meal.

Some were forced to make do with tender coconut and juice sold along the roads, while others somehow managed to grab a snack.

“On the entire Cathedral Road stretch, only a few tea shops were open. I had to settle for a samosa and vada for breakfast,” said Ramesh, an auto driver.

Until noon, roadside eateries, tea shops, restaurants and even pharmacies were closed in otherwise busy localities like Mylapore, Royapettah, Choolaimedu, Egmore, Ayanavaram and Villivakkam.

Even the bustling shopping hub of T Nagar was relatively quiet, as most of the big shops that usually attract huge crowds, were shut.

It seemed as though the hungry bachelors descended on Triplicane, as biryani shops and restaurants that opened by noon in the area did brisk business. Unlike other places, Triplicane High Road was bustling with activity, as many other shops also opened by afternoon. “I was forced to skip breakfast. For a single decent meal, I had to wait for half-an-hour at an eatery to get a parcel,” said Raja S. A small mess at Choolaimedu serving Andhra cuisine had to cater to winding queues of hungry people when it opened for lunch.

In Anna Nagar, families were seen walking into restaurants, after casting their vote, after lunch time.

While the city wore a deserted look for most part of the day, conservancy staff were the only ones busy working on many roads since morning.

“We were asked to report to work early. Our supervisor said we can vote in the afternoon," a conservancy worker in Avvai Shanmugam Salai at oyapettah said.

Low turnout, missing names, faulty EVMs headline poll day

Malfunctioning of EVMs, VVPAT machines and absence of names on the voters list at a few locations marred an otherwise peaceful polling in the city on a hot and sultry Thursday when just 59.01% of the voters turned up to register the lowest turnounts in the state. While 61.76% in the predominantly working class North Chennai voted, Chennai Central registered 57.86% and South was the least at 57.43%.

Four hours after polling began, the turnout was 23.37%. It was 37.09% at 1pm, 47.26% at 3pm and 57.14%by 5pm.

While paramilitary forces ensured that a few ‘vulnerable’ and ‘sensitive’ booths remained peaceful, a few stray incidents created a flutter in a few pockets in the north. At the Chennai Corporation HS School at C Kalyanapuram under Perambur constituency, with 13 booths, ‘agents’ of the two Dravidian majors were locked in an argument over the AIADMK’s chief agent trying to influence voters before police stepped in.

Snags in EVMs delayed polling at a few places in Central and South Chennai, including Royapettah and Triplicane, and some EVMs not functioning prompted DMK president M K Stalin to term the Election Commission “an alliance partner” of the party at the Centre. He was talking to reporters after voting at SIET College in Teynampet (South Chennai). At Milton School, Choolaimedu, 60-year-old J Philomina, who was one of the first to enter the booth around 8am, was stumped when the EVM did not work. “The officials were clueless,” she said.

Names missing from the list irked voters at T Nagar, Anna Nagar, Alwarpet and a few other areas, with some ‘fighting’ with poll officials. Many could not show online proof as they weren’t allowed to use mobile phones. R Rajan of T Nagar was among 10-odd people deprived of the chance to vote. “We did not get our booth slips and our names were missing from the rolls,” he said.

T Balasubramanian of Porur, who found himself in a similar situation, said, “My wife’s name was there but mine was missing. I have been voting in the same booth since 1992.” Officials said they were bound by the rules.

While some like Latha at Gnanodhya Girls High School in Chernnai North were irked by the long wait, many whose names were on the list could not vote. After employees of 484 private companies in Tamil Nadu, including IT firms in Chennai and Coimbatore, complained that they were forced to work, labour department rectified 473 complaints by asking the firms to shut immediately. “Notices will be issued to the remaining 11 companies through Election Commission of India,” a senior official said.

The state government had earlier issued orders stating that no commercial establishment should function on April 18 and should grant a day’s leave with pay to all employees. The labour department has set up a hotline — 044-24321438 — for employees to complain.
