Professor gets bail

A senior professor of Madras Medical College, who was jailed by a Lucknow court in an alleged case of cheating, has been granted bail, according to his family.

M. Sudheer, a senior professor in Madras Medical College, took a loan at a high interest rate from M. Kamaraj, a money lender in Purasawalkam, in 2011. Since then, Mr. Sudheer was threatened and harassed by Kamaraj even after paying up. When the professor refused to part with more money, Kamaraj got his accomplices in Uttar Pradesh to file a false cheating case against him in Aliganj.

Following this, the Lucknow police arrested the professor on February 24. He was detained illegally and tortured before being sent to a Lucknow prison. The arrest came to light when his wife lodged a complaint with the authorities. The money lender was arrested and remanded last week.

Court orders accused to fill artificial waterholes for bail

A day after an Ariyalur court asked an accused to cut karuvelam trees to grant bail, it was the turn of a Mettupalayam court to impose a novel punishment.While granting conditional bail to an accused on a deer poaching case, the judicial magistrate on Thursday ordered him to work with forest officials in filling artificial waterholes located inside the reserve forest in Mettupalayam forest range. The judicial magistrate also instructed the forest range officer of Mettupalayam range to submit a report in 30 days.

Forest department officials from Sirumugai range got a tip off that a few people were involved in poaching of deer and selling its meat to villagers. While conducting a vehicle check near Annur on February 21, 2017, forest officials intercepted a motorcycle but the rider tried to escape. However, the officials managed to catch him and took him to Sirumugai forest range office for inquiry.

Preliminary investigation revealed that A Selvaraj, 35, of Annur, used to collect deer meat from another poacher Marimuthu of Sirumugai and he sold the meat to few villagers. Selvaraj was booked under sections 39 (a) (b) (d) and 51 (i) of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.Selvaraj was arrested and remanded in judicial custody .He was lodged at the Coimbatore central prison.

Selvaraj approached the Mettupalayam judicial magistrate court for bail. The defense counsel argued that Selvaraj had spent 23 days in prison and requested the court to provide him conditional bail. The judicial magistrate K Sureshkumar granted conditional bail to Selvaraj but with a rider. He ordered Selvaraj to work with forest officials and fill water in artificial waterholes created by the forest department in Mettupalayam forest range for 30 days. The forest range officer has to submit a report to the court on the 30th day and based on the report the conditions will be relaxed.

State govt announces 174 more seats for postgraduate courses in medicine

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced that 174 more seats will be added to postgraduate courses in government medical colleges from the academic year 2017-18. The government is also likely to announce 165 more seats in a week, said secretary to the department of health, Dr J Radhakrishnan.

In his budget speech for the financial year 2017-18, finance minister D Jayakumar proposed to increase the number of seats in postgraduate medical courses from 1,188 to 1,362. “Out of the total 174 seats that will be added from the next academic year, 143 seats have been allotted based on the revised teacher-student ratio proposed in the Union budget,“ said Radhakrishnan. “The remaining 31 seats were allotted as a regular process every year.“

The Centre had revised the teacher student ratio for postgraduate medical courses to 3:1 this year. “A total of about 1,200 postgraduate seats were sanctioned to be allotted across the country . Of that, we managed to get 143 seats,“ said a senior official of the health department.“We are also expecting an additional 165 seats in a week or 10 days,“ he added.

The increase in the seats will be across 13 government medical colleges in the state. At present there are 21 government medical colleges, which is likely to become 22 once approvals are given to the Puduk kottai college. “Of the 21 colleges, 13 have postgraduate courses. The addition of seats is predominantly in clinical courses such as medicine, surgery , paediatrics and orthopaedics.

The increase in the number of seats will come out as a relief for MBBS students in the state, especially those from the rural and middle class strata. “This will be a motivation for many students who aspire to pursue postgraduate studies, but do not have the financial resources. Also, those students who aspire to join medicine will see this as a positive sign for their career,“ said the dean of Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, Edwin Joe.

MCI removes limit on attempts, age in NEET

There will be no limit on the number of attempts for a candidate in the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test or the age at which heshe can appear, the Medical Council of India has said.In 2016, the Supreme Court mandated a uniform entrance test for medical admission -to be conducted by the Central Board of School Education for undergraduate courses and by the National Board of Examinations for postgraduate courses. State-run institutions were last year exempted from the test which has been made mandatory for 2017.
An earlier NEET bulletin from the CBSE had said a candidate can appear only thrice for the test and those who had completed three attempts would not be eligible for 2017 test.
In February , it clarified that attempts made for AIPMTNEET before 2017 would not be counted and NEET-2017 would be the first attempt for all.
The upper age limit of the candidates appearing for NEET (UG) was fixed at 25 years on the date of conduct of examination. A five year relaxation was given to reserved category candidates.
On Thursday , based on recommendations from the oversight committee and the Union health ministry , the MCI said both limitations were being deleted.
“The oversight committee felt such limitations will reduce the number of doctors in the country . The Union health ministry agreed and suggested the recommendation to us. We have passed it,“ said MCI vicepresident Dr CV Bhirmanandham.
“We give everyone the opportunity to clear the test.Students who don't make it this year either because they haven't prepared for the test or because they haven't applied for the test on time can always try later. It gives even undergraduate students of BSc an opportunity .“

மது கடைகள் மூடலால் ரூ.2,100 கோடி இழப்பு

'தமிழகத்தில், 'டாஸ்மாக்' கடைகள் மூடப்பட்டதால், 2,100 கோடி ரூபாய் அளவிற்கு வருவாய் குறைந்துள்ளது,'' என, நிதித்துறை செயலர் சண்முகம் தெரிவித்தார்.

கோவாவில் சமீபத்தில் நடந்து முடிந்த சட்டசபை தேர்தலில் எந்த கட்சிக்கும் பெரும்பான்மை கிடைக்காத நிலை ஏற்பட்டது. மொத்தமுள்ள 40 தொகுதிகளில் காங்கிரஸ் 17 இடங்களையும், பா.ஜனதா 13 இடங்களையும் பெற்றன. மேலும் மராட்டியவாடி கோமந்த கட்சி, கோவா பார்வர்டு கட்சி மற்றும் சுயேச்சைகள் தலா 3 தொகுதிகளிலும், தேசியவாத காங்கிரஸ் ஒரு இடத்திலும் வெற்றி பெற்றன.

இந்த சிறிய கட்சிகள் மற்றும் சுயேச்சைகளின் ஆதரவுடன் ஆட்சியமைக்க பா.ஜனதா நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொண்டது. அதன் பயனாக மராட்டியவாடி கோமந்த கட்சி, கோவா பார்வர்டு கட்சி, தேசியவாத கட்சி மற்றும் 3 சுயேச்சைகளும் பா.ஜனதாவை ஆதரிக்க முன்வந்தன.

மனோகர் பாரிக்கர் பதவியேற்பு

இதைத்தொடர்ந்து மத்திய பாதுகாப்புத்துறை மந்திரியாக இருந்த மனோகர் பாரிக்கரை கோவாவின் புதிய முதல்–மந்திரியாக்க பா.ஜனதா மேலிடம் முடிவு செய்தது. அதன்படி மந்திரி பதவியை ராஜினாமா செய்த அவர், மாநில கவர்னரை சந்தித்து ஆட்சியமைக்க உரிமை கோரினார். அப்போது தனக்கு ஆதரவளிக்கும் எம்.எல்.ஏ.க்களின் பட்டியலையும் அவர் அளித்தார்.

இதை ஏற்று மனோகர் பாரிக்கரை முதல்–மந்திரியாக பதவியேற்குமாறு கவர்னர் மிருதுளா சின்கா அழைப்பு விடுத்தார். அதன்பேரில் மனோகர் பாரிக்கர் தலைமையிலான பா.ஜனதா கூட்டணி அரசு கடந்த 14–ந் தேதி பதவியேற்றுக்கொண்டது.

சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டு உத்தரவு

இதற்கிடையே மாநிலத்தில் 17 இடங்களில் வெற்றி பெற்று தனிப்பெரும் கட்சியாக உருவெடுத்த தங்களை ஆட்சியமைக்க அழைக்காமல், பா.ஜனதாவுக்கு கவர்னர் அழைப்பு விடுத்ததை எதிர்த்து காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டில் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தது.

இதை விசாரித்த சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டு மனோகர் பாரிக்கர் தலைமையிலான பா.ஜனதா அரசு பதவியேற்புக்கு தடையில்லை என அறிவித்தது. எனினும் புதிய அரசு 16–ந் தேதி (நேற்று) பெரும்பான்மையை நிரூபிக்க வேண்டும் என உத்தரவிட்டது.

22 உறுப்பினர் ஆதரவு

அதன்படி நேற்று சட்டசபையின் சிறப்பு கூட்டம் நடந்தது. பா.ஜனதாவின் சித்தார்த் கன்கோலியங்கர் தற்காலிக சபாநாயகராக பொறுப்பு வகித்தார். காலையில் சட்டசபை கூடியதும் புதிதாக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட உறுப்பினர்கள் அனைவரும் பதவி ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர். பின்னர் புதிய அரசுக்கான நம்பிக்கை வாக்கெடுப்பை சபாநாயகர் நடத்தினார்.

இந்த வாக்கெடுப்பில் அரசுக்கு ஆதரவாக 22 உறுப்பினர்கள் வாக்களித்தனர். எதிராக 16 உறுப்பினர்கள் ஓட்டுப்போட்டனர்.

காங்கிரஸ் உறுப்பினர் விஸ்வஜித் ராணே இந்த வாக்கெடுப்பில் கலந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. இதன் மூலம் மனோகர் பாரிக்கர் அரசு வெற்றி பெற்றதாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. பின்னர் சட்டசபை 22–ந் தேதிக்கு ஒத்திவைக்கப்பட்டது.

எம்.எல்.ஏ. ராஜினாமா

நம்பிக்கை வாக்கெடுப்பில் பங்கேற்காத காங்கிரஸ் எம்.எல்.ஏ. விஸ்வஜித் ராணே தனது பதவியை ராஜினாமா செய்து உள்ளார். அவரது ராஜினாமா கடிதத்தை சபாநாயகர் சித்தார்த் கன்கோலியங்கர் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். விஸ்வஜித் ராணே, வல்போய் தொகுதியில் இருந்து வெற்றி பெற்றவர் ஆவார்.

காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி 17 இடங்களில் வெற்றி பெற்ற பின்னரும் மாநிலத்தில் அரசு அமைக்க தவறியது விஸ்வஜித் ராணேவுக்கு மிகுந்த அதிருப்தியை ஏற்படுத்தி இருந்தது. புதிய அரசு அமைக்க காங்கிரஸ் சார்பில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட முயற்சிகளை தவறாக வழிநடத்தியவர்கள் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்குமாறு கட்சியின் அகில இந்திய துணைத்தலைவர் ராகுல் காந்திக்கும் அவர் கடிதம் எழுதியுள்ளார்.

முதல்–மந்திரி மனோகர் பாரிக்கர் தற்போது எம்.பி.யாக உள்ளார். 6 மாதத்துக்குள் அவர் எம்.எல்.ஏ. ஆக வேண்டும். தற்போது வல்போய் தொகுதி காலியாகி இருப்பதால் மனோகர் பாரிக்கர் அங்கு போட்டியிட கூடும் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.
