சென்னை: கடலுார் மாவட்டம், வடலுாரில், தைப்பூச ஜோதி தரிசனத்துக்கு வரும் பக்தர்களுக்காக, அடிப்படை வசதிகளை மேற்கொள்ளும்படி, சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது.

நாகப்பட்டினத்தை சேர்ந்த, செல்வகுமார் என்பவர், உயர் நீதிமன்றத்துக்கு அனுப்பிய கடிதத்தில், வரும், ௩௧ம் தேதி நடக்க உள்ள ஜோதி தரிசனத்துக்காக, வடலுாருக்கு வரும் பக்தர்களுக்கு, அடிப்படை வசதிகளை செய்து தர, மவட்ட நிர்வாகத்துக்கு உத்தரவிடும்படி கோரியிருந்தார். இந்த கடிதத்தை, உயர் நீதிமன்றம், வழக்காக விசாரணைக்கு எடுத்தது.

திருநெல்வேலி: குடோன்களில் நெல் மூட்டைகளுக்கு பதிலாக உமிமூட்டைகளை வைத்து ஒரு கோடியே 18 லட்சம் ரூபாய் கடன் பெற்று மோசடிசெய்த ராஜபாளையம் தொழிலதிபர் உள்பட 5 பேர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர்.

விருதுநகர் மாவட்டம் ராஜபாளையம் பொத்தை தெருவை சேர்ந்த கண்ணன் மகன் வெங்கடேஷ் என்ற அர்ஜூன் சந்துரு. மில் அதிபர். இவர் சங்கரன்கோவில் பகுதியில் உள்ள குடோன்களில் நெல் மூட்டைகளை சேமித்துவைத்திருப்பதற்கான ஆவணங்களை சமர்ப்பித்து தென்காசி ஐ.டி.பி.ஐ., வங்கியில் ஒரு கோடியும், சங்கரன்கோவில் கரூர் வைஸ்யா பாங்கில்ரூ. 18 லட்சமும் கடன் பெற்றுள்ளார்.

சென்னை: தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள, அரசு மருத்துவக் கல்லுாரிகளில், 1,225 மருத்துவ பட்ட மற்றும் டிப்ளமா மேற்படிப்பு இடங்கள் உள்ளன.

சென்னை,

தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் ஒரு கோடியே 96 லட்சத்து 84 ஆயிரம் குடும்ப அட்டைதாரர்கள் (ரேஷன் கார்டு) உள்ளனர். இவர்களுக்கு, பொது மற்றும் சிறப்பு பொது வினியோகத் திட்டத்தின் கீழ், ரேஷன் கடைகள் மூலம் பொருட்கள் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

விலையில்லா அரிசி, கோதுமை, சர்க்கரை, பாமாயில், துவரம் பருப்பு, மண்எண்ணெய் ஆகியவை ரேஷன் கடைகளில் வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இதன் மூலம் 6 கோடியே 76 லட்சம் பேர் பயனடைந்து வருகின்றனர்.

கடந்த 2005-ம் ஆண்டுக்கு பிறகு ரேஷன் கார்டுகள் புதிதாக அச்சிடப்பட்டு வழங்கப்படவில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டு இறுதியிலும் உள்தாள் மட்டுமே இணைக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. 12 ஆண்டுகளாக ஒரே அட்டை பயன்பாட்டில் இருந்ததால், அவை கிழிந்து மோசமான நிலையில் இருந்தது.

இந்த நிலையில், ரேஷன் கார்டு வைத்துள்ள அனைவருக்கும் புதிதாக ‘ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு’ வழங்கப்படும் என்று மறைந்த முதல்-அமைச்சர் ஜெயலலிதா அறிவித்தார். அதாவது, ரேஷன் கார்டுகளை நவீனமாக்கும் வகையிலும், போலி கார்டுகளை ஒழிக்கும் வகையிலும் இந்த நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டது. அந்தப் பணிகளுக்காக ரூ.330 கோடி நிதியும் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டது.

அதன்பின்னர், ரேஷன் கார்டு வைத்திருப்பவர்கள் தங்களின் ஆதார் எண்ணையும் ரேஷன் கடை ஊழியர்களிடம் வழங்க அறிவுறுத்தப்பட்டனர். இந்த நிலையில், ‘ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு’ அச்சிடும் பணி தொடங்கியது. ஓரளவு ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டுகள் அச்சிடப்பட்ட நிலையில், கடந்த ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதம் 1-ந் தேதி பழைய ரேஷன் கார்டுகளுக்கு பதிலாக ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வழங்கும் திட்டத்தை முதல்-அமைச்சர் எடப்பாடி பழனிசாமி தொடங்கிவைத்தார். அதே நேரத்தில், ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வழங்கும் பணி 100 சதவீதம் நிறைவடையும் வரை, பழைய ரேஷன் கார்டுகளுக்கும் பொருட்கள் வழங்கப்படும் என்றும் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

இதுவரை ஒரு கோடியே 85 லட்சம் பேருக்கு ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டுகள் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. 5 லட்சம் பேருக்கு வழங்கும் பணி நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. ஆதார் எண்ணை பதிவு செய்யாத 5 லட்சம் பேருக்கு ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வழங்கப்படவில்லை. இந்த நிலையில், இம்மாதம் (ஜனவரி) 1-ந் தேதி முதல் ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வைத்திருப்பவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே ரேஷன் கடைகளில் பொருட்கள் வழங்க அரசு முடிவு செய்தது. ஆனால், ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வழங்கும் பணி அதற்குள் முடிவடையாததால், கால அவகாசம் வழங்க வேண்டிய நிலை அரசுக்கு ஏற்பட்டது. வருகிற பிப்ரவரி மாதம் 28-ந் தேதியை அதற்கான கால அளவாக அரசு நிர்ணயித்துள்ளது.

எனவே, மார்ச் மாதம் 1-ந் தேதி முதல் ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வைத்திருப்பவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே ரேஷன் கடைகளில் பொருட்கள் வழங்கப்பட இருக்கிறது. இதற்கான அறிவிப்பை உணவுத்துறை அமைச்சர் காமராஜ் நேற்று வெளியிட்டார். இது தொடர்பாக, அவர் நிருபர்களிடம் கூறியதாவது:-

பழைய ரேஷன் கார்டுக்கு பதில் புதிய நவீன ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வழங்கும் பணி தீவிரமாக நடந்து வருகிறது. 90 சதவீதம் பேருக்கு ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டுகள் வழங்கப்பட்டுவிட்டது. 5 சதவீதம் பேருக்கு கார்டுகள் வழங்கும் பணி நடக்கிறது. 5 லட்சம் பேர் இன்னும் ஆதார் எண்ணை வழங்காததால், அவர்களுக்கு ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வழங்கப்படவில்லை. அவர்களுக்கு பல மாதங்களாக வாய்ப்பு கொடுத்தும் ஆதார் எண்ணை அவர்கள் இணைக்காமல் உள்ளனர்.

வரும் மார்ச் மாதம் 1-ந் தேதி முதல் ஸ்மார்ட் கார்டு வைத்திருப்பவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே ரேஷன் பொருட்கள் வழங்க அரசு திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது. இதுவரை, ஆதார் எண் வழங்காதவர்களுக்கு மேலும் சில நாட்கள் கால அவகாசம் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அப்போதும் அவர்கள் ஆதார் எண்ணை வழங்காவிட்டால், அந்த கார்டுகள் அனைத்தும் போலியானவை என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு, ரத்து செய்யப்படும். அவ்வாறு நீக்கப்பட்டால், அரசுக்கு ரேஷன் பொருட்கள் வாங்கும் செலவு மிச்சப்படும். இதன் மூலம் மற்றவர்களுக்கு கூடுதலாக உணவுப் பொருள் வழங்க முடியும்.

தமிழ்நாட்டில் பல குடும்பங்களின் வாழ்க்கைத்தரம் உயர்ந்திருப்பதற்கு பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளும் ஒரு காரணமாகும். கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகளாகவே தகவல் தொழில்நுட்ப புரட்சியாலும், உற்பத்தித்துறையின் முன்னேற்றத்தாலும், பொறியியல் பட்டதாரிகளுக்கு கடும் கிராக்கி ஏற்பட்டது. படித்து முடித்தவுடன் கைமேல் வேலை, பைநிறைய சம்பளம் என்ற வகையில், உடனடியாக நல்ல வேலை கிடைத்தது. இதனால் பிளஸ்–2 படித்து முடித்த மாணவர்களும், தங்கள் முதல் தேர்வாக பொறியியல் பட்டப்படிப்பையே விரும்பினார்கள். அவர்களின் பெற்றோர்களும் எவ்வளவு கஷ்டப்பட்டாவது பிள்ளைகளை பொறியியல் படிக்கவைத்துவிட்டால், வேலைகிடைத்தவுடன் அவர்கள் குடும்பத்தை காப்பாற்றிவிடுவார்கள் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் ஏழை குடும்பத்தினர்கூட தங்கள் வீட்டுபிள்ளைகளை பொறியியல் படிக்கவைத்தார்கள்.

இதன் காரணமாக, தமிழ்நாட்டில் ஏராளமான பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளை தனியார் தொடங்கினார்கள். பெரும் பொருட்செலவில் இந்த கல்லூரிகள் தொடங்கப்பட்டன. தற்போது 526 பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகள் உள்ளன. ஆனால், கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக பொறியியல் படிப்பு படித்தவர்களுக்கு வேலைவாய்ப்பு குறைந்ததால் நிறையபேர் இந்த படிப்பை படிக்கத்தயங்கினார்கள். வேலைவாய்ப்பு அளிக்கும் நிறுவனங்களும் ஒரு செமஸ்டரில் கூட தோல்வி அடையாத மாணவர்களையே வேலைக்கு எடுத்தார்கள். ஆனால், நமது கல்வித்திட்டத்தில் உள்ள குறைபாடுகளால், பிளஸ்–2 படித்த மாணவர்களால் அதற்குமேல் பொறியியல் கல்லூரியில் வந்து சேரும்போது, செமஸ்டரில் தோல்வி அடையவேண்டிய கட்டாயம் ஏற்படுகிறது. இத்தகைய சூழ்நிலையில், இந்த ஆண்டு தனியார் பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகள், அரசு ஒதுக்கீட்டில் உள்ள 1,75,500 இடங்களையும், நிர்வாக ஒதுக்கீட்டில் உள்ள 15,727 இடங்களையும் சரண்டர் செய்துவிட்டார்கள். 1,35,552 இடங்களுக்கு மட்டும் கவுன்சிலிங் நடந்தது. ஆனால், இதில் 86,355 இடங்களுக்கு மட்டும் மாணவர்கள் சேர்க்கப்பட்டனர்.

இந்தநிலையில், பாராளுமன்றத்தில் மத்திய மனிதவள மேம்பாட்டு ராஜாங்க மந்திரி தாக்கல் செய்த அறிக்கையில், ‘தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள 526 பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளில், 177 கல்லூரிகளில் 30 சதவீத இடங்களுக்கும் குறைவான மாணவர்கள்தான் சேர்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள்’ என்று குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தியாவிலேயே குறைந்த அளவு மாணவர்கள் சேர்ந்த கல்லூரிகள் எண்ணிக்கையில் தமிழ்நாடுதான் முதல் இடம் வகிக்கிறது. தனியார் பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளில் போதியளவு மாணவர்கள் சேராததாலும், தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்களுக்கான கல்விக்கட்டணத்தை அரசு இன்னும் தராததாலும் கடுமையான நிதிபற்றாக்குறையில் தள்ளாடுகிறது. பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளை, கலை மற்றும் அறிவியல் கல்லூரிகளாக மாற்றலாம் என்றால் அதற்கும் அகில இந்திய தொழில்நுட்பக்கல்வி கவுன்சில் அனுமதி அளிப்பதில்லை. மூடுவதற்கு வேண்டுமானால் அனுமதி கொடுத்துவிடுகிறார்கள். இந்த சூழ்நிலையில், பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளுக்கு மாணவர்கள் சேர்க்கையை அதிகரிக்க வேண்டுமென்றால், படித்துமுடித்தவுடன் வேலை கிடைப்பதற்கு ஏற்றவகையில் அவர்கள் பாடத்திட்டம், பயிற்சிகள் மாற்றப்படவேண்டும். படிக்கும்போதே அவர்கள் திறனை மேம்படுத்திக்கொள்ளும் வகையில், திறன்மேம்பாட்டு மையங்கள் அமைப்பதிலும் தொழில்கல்வி மையங்கள் அமைப்பதிலும், அகில இந்திய தொழில்நுட்ப கல்வி கவுன்சில் இன்னும் வேகமாக செயல்படவேண்டும். நாட்டில் உற்பத்திப்பிரிவு குறிப்பாக தகவல் தொழில்நுட்பத்துறை இன்னும் வேகமாக வளர்ச்சி பெற்றால்தான் பொறியியல் கல்வியை காப்பாற்ற முடியும்.

அம்மா இருசக்கர வாகன திட்ட விதிமுறையில் திருத்தம்: பழகுநர் உரிமம் இருந்தாலே விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம்

அம்மா இருசக்கர வாகன திட்டத்தில், பணிபுரியும் பெண்கள் பயன்பெற, பழகுநர் உரிமம் (LLR) வைத்திருந்தாலே போதும் என்று விதிமுறையைத் திருத்தி தமிழ்நாடு மகளிர் மேம்பாட்டுக் கழகம் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது.
பணிபுரியும் பெண்களுக்கான அம்மா இருசக்கர வாகன இத்திட்டத்தை தமிழக அரசு அறிவித்துள்ளது. இதற்கான விண்ணப்பங்கள் மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் அலுவலகங்கள், மாநகராட்சி, நகராட்சி, பேரூராட்சி அலுவலகங்கள் மற்றும் வட்டார வளர்ச்சி அலுவலகங்கள் ஆகியவற்றில் இலவசமாக வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

பிப்ரவரி 5 கடைசித் தேதி

சென்னையில் மாநகராட்சி மண்டல அலுவலகங்களிலும் வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. பூர்த்தி செய்த விண்ணப்பங்களை வரும் பிப்ரவரி 5-ம் தேதிக்குள் மேற்கூறிய இடங்களில் அளிக்கலாம். இ-சேவை மையங்கள் மூலமாக விண்ணப்பிக்க முடியாது.இத்திட்டத்தின்கீழ் பயன்பெறும் பெண்கள் 18முதல் 40 வயதுக்கு உட்பட்டவராக இருக்க வேண்டும். 125 சிசிக்கு குறைவான வாகனத்தையே வாங்க வேண்டும். மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கான இருசக்கர வாகனங்களும் வாங்கலாம்.பயனாளியின் தனி ஆண்டு வருமானம் ரூ.2 லட்சத்து 50 ஆயிரத்துக்கு மிகாமல் இருக்க வேண்டும். ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெற்றவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று விதிமுறைகள் வகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.சென்னை போன்ற மாநகரங்களில் பெரும்பாலான ஆண்களும், பெண்களும் போக்குவரத்து போலீஸாரின் சோதனைக்கு பயந்தே ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெறுகின்றனர். மாநகரங்களில் உள்ள பெண்களில் கூட, இருசக்கர வாகனங்களை வைத்திருப்போர் மட்டுமே ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெறுகின்றனர். என்றாவது தேவைப்படும் என்று பாஸ்போர்ட் வாங்கி வைத்துக்கொள்வது போன்று ஓட்டுநர் உரிமத்தை பெண்கள் வாங்கி வைத்துக்கொள்வதில்லை.2-ம் கட்ட நகரங்கள் மற்றும் கிராமப்புறங்களில் போலீஸார் கெடுபிடி இல்லாத நிலையில் அங்கு பெரும்பாலான ஆண்களே ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் வைத்திருப்பதில்லை.கிராமப்புற பெண்கள் ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் வைத்திருப்பது குறைவே.

கால அவகாசம் இல்லை

மேலும், மோட்டார் வாகன சட்டத்தில் இருசக்கர வாகனம் மற்றும் கார் வாங்க ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம்அவசியம் என குறிப்பிடப்படவில்லை. புதிதாக ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெற குறைந்தபட்சம் 40 நாட்கள் தேவை. வரும் பிப்ரவரி 5-ம் தேதிக்குள் இந்த ஆண்டுக்கான விண்ணப்பிக்கும் காலம் முடிவடையும் நிலையில், புதிய ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெறவும் அவகாசம் இல்லை.

தமிழக அரசு பேருந்துக் கட்டணத்தை கடுமையாக உயர்த்தியதன் விளைவாக, சாமானிய மக்கள் பெரும் சிரமங்களுக்கு ஆளாகி வருகிறார்கள். 'இந்தக் கட்டண உயர்வு தாங்கமுடியாத சுமையானது மக்களுக்கு. எனவே, இந்த உயர்வைக் குறைக்க வேண்டும்' என்று எல்லா கட்சித் தலைவர்களும் அறிக்கை விட்டு, போராட்டங்களுக்கும் நாள் குறித்துவிட்டார்கள். எல்லா கட்சிகளையும் முந்திக்கொண்டு, மார்க்சிஸ்ட் கம்யூனிஸ்ட் கட்சியினர் இன்று (22-ம் தேதி) மாநிலம் தழுவிய போராட்டத்தை நடத்தி முடித்துவிட்டார்கள். கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள் தொடர் போராட்டங்களைத் தன்னெழுச்சியாக முன்னெடுத்து நடத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

புதுக்கோட்டை நகர மக்கள், தினமும் சொந்த அலுவல், வியாபாரக் கொள்முதல், உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு காரணங்களுக்காக அருகில் உள்ள திருச்சி மாநகருக்குப் பேருந்தில் போய்வருவார்கள். புதுக்கோட்டையிலிருந்து திருச்சி செல்ல அதிகப்பட்ச கட்டணமே 33 ரூபாயாக இருந்தது. கட்டண உயர்வுக்குப் பிறகு அது, 51 ரூபாயாகிவிட்டது. அவ்வளவா... என்று மலைத்த மக்கள், இனி ரயிலே துணை என்று வழக்கம் போல மனம் மாறியிருக்கிறார்கள். புதுக்கோட்டையிலிருந்து திருச்சிக்கு பாசஞ்சர் ரயிலில் போகவும் வரவும் சேர்த்து மொத்தமே 30 ரூபாய்தான் கட்டணம். இந்த மார்க்கத்தில் திருச்சியிலிருந்து காரைக்குடிக்கும் மானாமதுரைக்கும் விருதுநகருக்கும் தனித்தனியாக டெமோ ரயிலும் பாசஞ்சர் ரெயிலும் தினமும் ஓடுகின்றன. இதில் டெமோ ரயில், ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை நீங்கலாக மற்ற வார நாள்களில் இயங்குகின்றன. புதுக்கோட்டை நகர மக்கள் சந்திக்கும் புதுவிதப் பிரச்னை ரெயிலைப் பிடிப்பதிலோ, அதில் பயணிப்பதிலோ இல்லை. ரயில்வே நிலையத்துக்குச் செல்வதில்தான் இருக்கிறது.

'இவ்வளவு மலிவான கட்டணத்தில் ரயில் போகும்போது, நாங்கள் எதுக்குங்க கொள்ளைக் காசைக் கொடுத்து பஸ்ல போகணும்' என்று கேட்டபடியே மூன்று கிலோமீட்டர் தூரம் இருக்கும் ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனுக்குப் பொடிநடையாகவே நடந்து சென்றுவிடுகிறார்கள். மேலும், "பஸ்காரனுக்கு அநியாயமா குடுக்குற காசில், வீட்டுக்கு காய்கறியாச்சும் வாங்கலாம். ஓட்டல்காரங்கிட்டே கொடுத்து வயிறார சாப்பிடலாம்" என்கிறார்கள்.

"பஸ் ஸ்டாண்டிலிருந்தும் அரசு மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி மருத்துவமனையிலிருந்தும் ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனுக்கு அதிக எண்ணிக்கையில் டவுன் பஸ் விடவேண்டும். புதுக்கோட்டை மார்க்கத்திலிருந்து திருச்சிக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, காரைக்குடி, சிவகங்கை, மானாமதுரை, ராமேஸ்வரம் வரை செல்வதற்கு ரயில் வசதி இருக்கிறது. அதை மக்கள் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ளத் தடையாக இருப்பது, ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனுக்குப் போக பஸ் வசதி இல்லாமல் இருப்பதுதான். போக்குவரத்து நிர்வாகம் உடனடியாக அந்த வசதியைச் செய்துகொடுக்க வேண்டும்'' என்றார்.

கரூரில் நேற்றிரவு வாகன சாேதனையில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த பாேக்குவரத்துக் காவலரை குடிபாேதையில் வந்த வாலிபர் கத்தியால் கழுத்தை அறுத்த சம்பவம் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

கரூர் பாேக்குவரத்து ஏட்டாக இருப்பவர் இளங்காே. இவர் வழக்கம்பாேல் நேற்றிரவு (22.1.2018) கரூர் நகரில் வாகன சாேதனையில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார். அப்பாேது, இருசக்கர வாகனத்தில் வேகமாக வந்திருக்கிறார் முரளி என்ற வாலிபர். அவரை மடக்கிய இளங்காே அவரிடம், 'லைசென்ஸ், ஆர்.சி புக், இன்ஷூரன்ஸ் உள்ளிட்ட ஆவணங்களைக் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். அதற்கு அந்த வாலிபர், 'என்கிட்ட அதெல்லாம் இல்லை. முடிந்ததைப் பார்த்துக்குங்க' என்று தெனாவெட்டாகப் பதில் சாெல்லி இருக்கிறார். உடனே இளங்காே, முரளியின் வாகனத்தைப் பறிமுதல் செய்ததாேடு, `காேர்ட்டில் பைன் கட்டிட்டு பைக்கை எடுத்துக்க' என்று சாெல்லியிருக்கிறார்.

இதனால், காேபமான முரளி, 'ஒழுங்கா வண்டியைக் காெடுத்திடுங்க. இல்லைன்னா, நான் சும்மா இருக்க மாட்டேன்' என்று மிரட்டலாகச் சாெல்லியிருக்கிறார். ஆனால், இளங்காே, 'டேய்... முடிஞ்சதைப் பாருடா. பாேலீஸையே மிரட்டுறியா' என்று பதிலுக்குச் சாெல்லியிருக்கிறார். காேபம் குறையாமல் பாேன முரளி ஒயின்ஷாப்புக்குச் சென்று மது அருந்திவிட்டு, நேராக இளங்காேவிடம் சென்று, 'என்கிட்டயே லைசென்ஸ் கேட்பியா. என் வண்டியையே சீஸ் பண்ணுவியா' என்றபடி கையில் மறைத்து எடுத்து வந்த கத்தியால் இளங்காேவின் கழுத்தை கரகரவென அறுத்திருக்கிறார்.

இதனால், இளங்காே அலற, அருகில் இருந்தவர்கள் ஓடிவந்து முரளியை மடக்கிப்பிடித்து, இளங்காேவை அவரிடமிருந்து மீட்டனர். உடனடியாக இளங்காேவை மருத்துவமனைக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தனர். தப்பியாேட முயன்ற முரளியையும் விரைந்து வந்த கரூர் நகர பாேலீஸார் கைது செய்தனர்.

திருவாரூர் அருகே புளிச்சக்காடு கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த தனலெட்சுமி என்ற கர்ப்பிணிக்கு நேற்று (21-ம்தேதி) நள்ளிரவு பிரசவ வலியெடுக்க, வாடகைக் காரில் அவசரமாகத் திருவாரூர் அரசு மருத்தவக் கல்லூரி மருத்துவமனைக்கு கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். தனலெட்சுமியுடன் வந்த உறவினர்கள், விரைந்தோடிச் சென்று காரிலிருந்து தனலெட்சுமியைக் கொண்டுவர ஸ்ட்ரெச்சர் கேட்டுள்ளனர். அதற்கு மறுப்பு தெரிவிக்கவே, செவிலியர் மற்றும் மருத்துவரின் உதவியை நாடியிருக்கின்றனர். அப்போது, அவர்களும் அங்கு இல்லை. இப்படி உறவினர்கள் அலைந்த ஒரு மணிநேரப் போராட்டத்துக்குள் காரிலேயே தனலெட்சுமிக்கு குழந்தை பிறந்துவிட்டது.

தனலெட்சுமியின் அலறல் சத்தம் கேட்டு, அருகில் இருந்த பெண்கள், துணியால் மறைத்து உதவியிருக்கிறார்கள். அதன்பின் அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகத்தை எதிர்த்துக் குரல்கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்ததும் குழந்தையும் தனலெட்சுமியும் ஆபத்தான நிலையில் மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளார்கள்.

இந்த மருத்துவமனைக்கு இரவு நேரத்தில் வரும் நோயாளிகளுக்கு ஊழியர்களின் அலட்சியத்தால் உயிரிழப்புகள் அடிக்கடி ஏற்படுகிறது. கடந்த மாதத்தில் திடீர் மாரடைப்பால் வந்த நோயாளிக்கு, உங்களுக்கு ஒன்றுமில்லை என்று கூறி வெளியே அனுப்பிவிட்டார்கள். அவர், மருத்துவமனை வளாகத்திலேயே படுத்து, பனியால் நடுங்கி உயிரிழந்தார். எனவே, தனலெட்சுமிக்கு நேர்ந்த அவலம் குறித்து மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி முதல்வர் மீனாட்சிசுந்தரத்திடம் புகார் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவர், இதுகுறித்து விரிவான விசாரணைக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார்.

தாலிகட்டும் நேரத்தில் சென்னை இன்ஜினீயரின் திருமணத்தை அவரின் காதலி வீட்டினர் தடுத்து நிறுத்திய சம்பவம் பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

சென்னையைச் சேர்ந்தவர் குமார். இன்ஜினீயர். இவருக்கும் திருவள்ளூர் மணவாள நகரைச் சேர்ந்த எம்.சி.ஏ பட்டதாரிப் பெண்ணுக்கும் திருமணத்தை நடத்த பெற்றோர்கள் முடிவு செய்தனர். அதன்படி திருமண நிச்சயதார்த்தம் சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு நடந்தது. இருவருக்கும் வெகுவிமர்சையாக நேற்று (22.1.2018) திருமணம் நடத்தப்படவிருந்தது. அதற்கு முன்பு ஜனவரி 21-ம் தேதி இரவு வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சி திருவள்ளூர் மணவாளநகரில் நடந்தது. வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு வந்தவர்கள் மணமக்களை வாழ்த்தினர். பரிசு பொருள்களைக் கொடுக்கும்போது மணமக்களுடன் அவர்கள் போட்டோவும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர். அப்போது, மணமக்கள் இருவரும் சிரித்த முகத்துடன் போஸ் கொடுத்தனர்.

வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சி முடிந்ததும் இரவில் அனைவரும் தூங்கச் சென்றனர். திருமணத்துக்கான அலங்காரம் மணமகளுக்கு நேற்று காலை நடந்தது. மணமகன் குமாரையும் தயார்படுத்த அவரது அறைக்கு உறவினர்கள் சென்றனர். அங்கு அவர் இல்லை. உடனடியாக அவரது செல்போனுக்கு தொடர்புகொண்டனர். அந்த நம்பரும் ஸ்விட்ச் ஆப் செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. குமாரின் நண்பர்கள், உறவினர்கள் ஆகியோரை மணமகள் வீட்டினரால் தொடர்புகொள்ள முடியவில்லை. இதனால் மணமகள் வீட்டினர் அதிர்ச்சியடைந்தனர்.

மணமகன் தலைமறைவானத் தகவல் கேட்டு மணமகள் அதிர்ச்சியில் உறைந்தார். திருமணத்துக்கு வந்தவர்களிடம் பதில் சொல்ல முடியாமல் மணமகள் வீட்டினர் தவித்தனர். வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சி வரை மணமக்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியாகவே இருந்தனர். தாலிகட்டும் நேரத்தில் மணமகன் தலைமறைவானது குறித்து பல்வேறு கேள்விகள் எழுந்தன. முகூர்த்த நேரம் முடிந்தும் மணமகனைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியவில்லை. இதனால் திருமணம் நின்றுபோனது.

இதனால் மனவேதனையடைந்த மணமகள் வீட்டினர் திருவள்ளூர் அனைத்து மகளிர் காவல் நிலையத்தில் புகார் கொடுத்தனர். அதன்பேரில் போலீஸார் விசாரணை நடத்தினர். விசாரணையில் வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சி முடிந்த பிறகு, மணமகன் குமாரை நள்ளிரவில் ஒரு தரப்பினர் சந்தித்துள்ளனர். அப்போது, குமாருக்கும் அந்த தரப்பினருக்கும் இடையே கடும் வாக்குவாதம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. அதன்பிறகே மணமகன் குமார் மாயமாகியிருப்பது தெரியவந்தது. குமாரிடம் தகராறு செய்தவர்கள் யார் என்று போலீஸார் விசாரித்தபோது, குமார், ஒரு பெண்ணை காதலித்ததாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. அந்தப் பெண்ணின் தரப்பினரே குமாரிடம் தகராறு செய்ததும் தெரிந்தது.

இந்தத் தகவலையறிந்த மணமகள் வீட்டினர், நல்லவேளை திருமணத்துக்கு முன்பே மணமகனின் சுயரூபம் தெரிந்துவிட்டது. இருப்பினும் திருமணத்துக்கு செலவு செய்த பணத்தை மணமகன் வீட்டிலிருந்து பெற்றுத்தரும்படி போலீஸாரிடம் கோரிக்கை வைத்தனர். மணமகள் வீட்டினரின் கோரிக்கையை மணமகன் வீட்டினரும் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர். இதையடுத்து, வழக்கு சமரசமாக முடித்துவைக்கப்பட்டதாகப் போலீஸார் தெரிவித்தனர்.

Reliance Jio launches Republic Day offer: Now, get unlimited data at Rs 98 for 28 days(REUTERS)

Shortly after Airtel revised its select data plans, Reliance Jio has announced offering 500MB more data to its subscribers. The benefit is available for select plans including 1GB and 1.5GB per day data packs with effect from January 26, according to company sources.

The telecom operator as part of its ‘Republic Day offer’ will double the validity of Rs 98 pack to 28 days from the current 14 days from January 26 onwards, they said.

“Jio will always offer more value to its customers, and offer Rs 50 lower price than competition and 50 per cent more data on its plans. As part of Republic Day offer, all existing 1 GB per day packs enhanced to 1.5 GB per day, 1.5 GB per day packs enhanced to 2 GB per day,” sources said.

IANS reports that the flagship Rs 399 plan will now provide free voice, unlimited data of 1.5 GB daily, unlimited SMS (short message service) and premium subscription to Jio Apps for 84 days.

“Jio packs to be Rs 50 lower than competition and to provide 50 per cent more data at similar price points,” added IANS.

With this new offer, Jio’s flagship Rs 399 plan will provide free voice, unlimited 4G data with 1.5 GB daily, unlimited SMS and premium subscription to Jio Apps for 84 days.

The Rs 98 pack at present offers 2.1 GB data at 4G speed and thereafter speed drops to 64 kilobit per second with 14 days validity.

According to Bharti Airtel MD and CEO, India & South Asia, Gopal Vittal, the battle among telecom operators is now for market share and the pressure on tariff will continue for some time even though it is at an unsustainable level at present.

Earlier, Airtel revised its prepaid plans priced at Rs 199, Rs 448, and Rs 509 to offer 1.4GB of 3G/4G data daily. Previously, these three Airtel prepaid plans came with 1GB data per day limit.

New Delhi: Aviation regulator DGCA has suspended — for five years — the licences of the two pilots, one of them a lady, who had fought in the cockpit during a Jet Airways Mumbai-London flight earlier this month on January 1, top DGCA sources have confirmed. The incident was serious since the cockpit had been left unmanned by the male co-pilot who came out of the cockpit after the lady-pilot had left the cockpit in tears. As per rules, one of the two pilots have to be in the cockpit at all times. The action was taken by the DGCA due to the safety lapses that resulted in endangering of aircraft operations.

Jet Airways had recently sacked the two senior commanders including the lady-pilot. The serious incident mid-air that could have jeopardised the lives of hundreds of passengers. The aircraft had 338 people including 324 passengers on board. Aviation sources had earlier pointed out that there would have been a major catastrophe had the cockpit door shut by mistake and jammed and not responded to the access codes since the pilots would have then been unable to get in. This is why both aviation authorities and Jet Airways have viewed the matter very seriously.

The incident occurred when the lady pilot and her male co-pilot, both of whom are senior pilots in the airline, had an argument in the cockpit of Jet Airways flight 9W 119 from London to Mumbai after take-off. According to sources in the airline, the male co-pilot had allegedly slapped the lady-pilot commander who left the cockpit in tears and started sobbing outside.

Centre sets August 15 deadline for free Wi-Fi on campus

The Centre has asked all public-funded universities and colleges to provide free-of-cost high-speed internet access and Wi-Fi facilities to students and faculties on campus by August 15.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry in a communication to all higher educational institutions said that "some telecom and internet service providers" have evinced interest in providing universities and colleges with high-speed internet access and Wi-Fi facilities.

"It is expected that the facility will be provided by the TSP/ISP (telecom service provider/internet service provider) at their own cost. There shall be no financial implications to the institutions on account of implementation of this project," a ministry official wrote to the heads of all higher educational institutions on January 15.

The ministry suggested that the institutions approach any of the licensed telecom and internet service providers for installation of high-speed internet and Wi-Fi facility on their campus.

The ministry, however, refrained from listing the names of service providers that have "evinced" interest. According to sources, Reliance Jio is one.

"The TSP should offer free data, which shall not be less that 1 GB per month per user (students and faculties) in the university/institution/college for the entire period of agreement," read the terms and conditions specified by the ministry.

The Wi-Fi services will be made available at the hotspots selected by the institutions concerned.

"Each user shall be allowed a minimum of two devices (laptop/smart phone) concurrently," the ministry said.

Chennai: Student jumps to death from college

The student was allegedly depressed after the college management informed his family about his poor performance in examinations.

Police sources said that the boy was caught cheating during examinations on Monday after which the management informed his parents.

Chennai: A 21-year-old final year mechanical engineering student of a private university in Kattankulathur committed suicide by jumping off the third floor of his college building on Monday.

S. Sai Nithin was allegedly depressed after the college management informed his family about his poor performance in examinations.

Police sources said that the boy was caught cheating during examinations on Monday after which the management informed his parents. A native of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh, Sai Nithin was staying in the hostel here.

On Monday, after semester results were announced, Nithin went to the third floor of his college building and jumped around 4 pm.

He was moved to the hospital within the university premises where he died around 10 pm on Monday.

Maraimalar Nagar police secured his body and moved it to Chengelpet medical college hospital for autopsy. Police registered a case under the CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) and said the boy didn’t leave any suicide note on his person. Further investigations are on. Family members reached the city on Tuesday to collect the body after autopsy.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government is likely to remain silent on the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (Neet) issue and has decided not to send any communication to the Centre seeking extension from the national-level entrance exam after burning its finger last year.

A highly placed official, who is aware of the exchange of files between the health department and the Centre confirmed that there is no recent communication between the centre and the state on the crucial students’ issue, which created uproar last year following the suicide of anti Neet campaigner Anitha.

Both the Centre and the judiciary had let down the state affecting the students last year. Further, it is a politically sensitive issue, where bureaucracy has very little to do, quipped the official source evading queries by DC.

“The state is not in a position to comment, if there are any proposal sent to Centre seeking Neet exemption. However, 14,231 students from Tamil Nadu had appeared for PG Neet early this year and are awaiting results. The special classes for Neet aspirants are already in progress indicating that the students will appear for Neet and there will not be any exemption this year”, said another official.

Says a professor of medicine attached to a government medical college, “Any decision can be made now only after the review of the Supreme Court order.

They have asked us not to create further confusions in the NEET and as per a recent direction of the Madras High Court, doctors cannot comment. It has taken more than a year for the judiciary and the policy makers to understand the issue and the matter is still pending”. “Whatever be the outcome of verdict, justice delayed is justice denied”, the professor rued.

Coaching centres not adequate for Neet: PMK

PMK MP Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday accused the Tamil Nadu of not opening adequate coaching centres to prepare for the Neet scheduled in the first week of May.

Accusing the state government of not doing enough to get exemption from Neet for students from Tamil Nadu, he faulted the administration for not opening enough coaching centres to help the students.

“The state government has failed to implement its promise of opening enough number of coaching centres for students studying in the government-run schools to prepare for Neet,” he said, adding of the 412 centres promised, only 100 have begun functioning.

“With just a week left in January and with Class XII students set to be preoccupied with board exams during entire March, there is hardly any time left for the students to prepare for Neet,” he said.

Madras High Court grants interim stay on Medical Council of India order discharging students

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court today granted interim stay on the orders passed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) "discharging" some students pursuing PG courses in the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences.

Considering the facts and circumstances of the case and having regard to the rival submissions in the interest of justice, there shall be an order of interim stay till February 6, Justice R Mahadevan said.

The judge also directed the Medical Council of India, Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry and Puducherry Health and Family Services department to file their counters by then.

According to the students, the MCI passed an order in December last year directing Sri Venkateswara Medical College, Puducherry, to discharge the students who were admitted to the PG Medical courses for academic year 2017-2018 without issuing any notice and without providing the opportunity of personal hearing.

Counsel for MCI, VP Raman, submitted that the students, who have been ordered to be discharged, had not fulfilled the minimum eligibility criteria as fixed by authorities.

Besides, the Venkateshara Medical College had not sent the correct list of eligible candidates, he said.

The students claimed that there was absolutely no illegality in their admissions.

CHENNAI: A Chennai-based firm’s managing director has been arrested by the Central Excise Commissionerate for alleged evasion of Rs 7.38 crore service tax after collecting the same from service receivers.

D Mathew of Tech Sharp Engineers, a provider of erection, commissioning and installation services, was arrested after he failed to deposit Rs 7.38 crore service tax from one of the main service receivers into the government account.

The sum was for the period from April 2016 to June 2017, an official release said. The Headquarters Preventive Unit of Chennai North GST and Central Excise Commissionerate officers arrested Mathew for violation of various provisions of the Finance Act and CGST Act. Mathew was produced before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Economic Offences-II, Egmore (Allikulam), who remanded him to judicial custody till February 2.

BENGALURU: In a show of solidarity with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Governor and Chancellor of state universities Vajubhai Vala on Tuesday put an end to the state government’s pressure on the varsity to transfer its funds to the Public Works Department (PWD) for construction works. In a letter penned to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Vala asked the government to settle the matter in the court instead of putting pressure on RGUHS.

He also brought this to the notice of RGUHS vice chancellor in an official communication dated January 17 along with the copy of the communication to the CM. As per the documents available with The New Indian Express, on January 4, the Governor sent an official communication to the CM asking to get necessary clarification from the HC before taking further steps.

Vala wrote, “It is brought to my notice by in-charge vice chancellor of RGUHS that government orders have been issued to transfer an amount of `580 crore from the university, in exercise of powers under Section 40 of the act. It is also brought to my notice that the university had taken a decision not to transfer the said amount of the university. Contrary to the same, the aforesaid government order has been issued.”

The letter goes on to tell the CM that the Governor was aware of writ petitions before the High Court in which an interim order had been passed and that the issue with regard to shifting of campus was also pending.

However, according to the sources in Raj Bhavan, the Governor’s letter was only a reply to the Chief Minister’s letter. “Recently, we received a letter from the Chief Minister where he tried to clarify the need to transfer funds from the university for construction of a new campus proposed at Ramanagara. We had already received a communication from the university about the decision taken in the varsity syndicate. Considering that, the Governor replied to the CM,” a source from Raj Bhavan explained. The state government has been sending repeated communications to RGUHS insisting on funds to be transferred. Following which, the university authorities submitted a representation to Governor.

VELLORE: Tension gripped the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital on Tuesday evening after an elderly woman unknowingly unplugged an oxygen port in a women's surgical ward while trying to recharge her cellphone. 

When the woman unplugged the port, oxygen started coming out with a huge sound. The inmates and their attendants ran out of the second floor ward. The patients on the ground floor too came out of their respective wards. All of them waited outside the building anxiously. The incident took place around 6.15pm.

Dean of the institution Dr R Shanthi Malar and a team of doctors rushed to the ward and inspected. On inquiry, the patients informed the doctors that an elderly woman, mistaking the port on the oxygen supply line for an electric sachet, removed it in a bid to recharge her cellphone.

"We disconnected the line that was damaged by the elderly woman. We brought the patients back to the wards after an hour, after explaining to them what had happened," said Dr Malar.

2-wheeler financing running on top-gear

Chennai: Nearly a decade after the blood bath in the two-wheeler financing market, this still-low-penetration segment is booming again. Buoyant rural demand has boosted the sales of motorcycles in FY17-18 and scooters too are in top gear.
HDFC Bank has reported around 18-20% growth while some NBFCs too are reporting between 9-15% rise in asset size year-on-year. While some of the financiers who burnt their fingers in the go-go rush of 2008 will not come back, those now in the business say a repeat is unlikely as financiers have figured out that two-wheeler financing is a high-risk, high-volume game.

Although passenger vehicles command the lion's share of auto financing, two-wheelers are now back in the reckoning. HDFC Bank for instance, is all set to complete this financial year with 1.2 million disbursals. The growth has come on the back of some top gear growth in the luxury motorcycle segment as well as resurgence of rural markets.

Said Ashok Khanna, business head, vehicle loans, HDFC Bank, 'Our two wheeler loan book is currently crossing Rs 7000 crore and we are doing business worth Rs 500 crore every month in this segment. This year has seen terrific growth in the two-wheeler business and we are disbursing an average of 1,00,000 vehicles a month,'' he added.

It's not the only financier to clock top gear growth. "We are aware from manufacturers and retailers in the top 15 cities, we operate out of, that it is boom time for two-wheeler financing," said Devang Mody, CEO, Reliance Money. "Currently our market is 60%-65% for motorcycles and 30%-35% for scooters and mopeds. One of the reasons for the boom, apart from good monsoon and buoyant rural demand, is the steady fall in two wheeler finance rates. On rack rates, there has been a fall of 2%-3%. Earlier, it used to be around 25%-26%, but today NBFCs are charging interest rates between 21%-23%," he added.

Two-wheeler financiers say a repeat of the 2008 fiasco is unlikely for several reasons. First, the checks and balances are stricter. Majority of customers today have a CIBIL score and customer contactability has also improved. ''Every customer has a cellphone, bank account, Aadhaar card, so there has been an enormous change in credit infrastructure and we will not see delinquencies like in 2008," said Mody, adding that delinquencies have come down from what it was in the past, but credit cycles will still repeat. "Another hurdle earlier was the cost of KYC verification but with Aadhaar, it has become easier to collect and verify customer details," he said.

Also, banks are using customers in their branch network whose credit background has already been checked to sell both two-wheeler and four-wheeler loans. "We do cross selling with our bank customers and we have been doing 30,000-35,000 two wheelers every month from our own bank branch customers," said Khanna.

And this year is likely to bring in a windfall for them, say financiers, who saw a slump post-demonetisation. "We have seen particularly good growth in two-wheelers, particularly from rural areas; it has been bouyed by a good monsoon and stronger consumer spending. We are expecting a strong uptick in sales this January-April this year more than usual as even otherwise this period has always been profitable for vehicle financiers," said S V Parthasarathy, head, consumer finance, IndusInd Bank.

Kuwait announces general amnesty, huge relief for overstaying Indians

Hyderabad: With the Kuwait government announcing a general amnesty, thousands of Indian workers stuck there because of illegally extended stay will be able to return to India without having to pay any penalty. The amnesty is in place from January 29 to February 22, 2018. “This comes as a great relief to workers,” said social welfare activist Shaheen Sayyed who had taken up the cause of the Indian workers in Kuwait.

Naresh Naidu, a worker who was employed with Kharifi National and overstayed to demand that his salary dues be released by the company, is one among those keen to make use of the amnesty. He hails from West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh and told TOI over telephone from Kuwait that on Tuesday he went to the Indian embassy in Kuwait and gave his details so that he could return to the country. “I found many workers from the Telugu states are eager to return to the country,” he said.

The penalty for overstaying in Kuwait is 2 Kuwaiti dinar — ₹424. Many workers who didn’t receive their salaries had overstayed for several months. They couldn’t even think of making an exit from the country by paying penalty as they had no money.

The amnesty granted by the Kuwaiti government comes in the wake of Union minister of state for external affairs VK Singh’s recent visit to Kuwait. He had taken up the issue of many Indian workers who were not paid by Kharafi National Company. He also spoke to the Kuwaiti government minister to waive off penalty for Indian workers overstaying in Kuwait and wanted to return to India.

Meanwhile, Kharafi National officials have made an offer to release 25% to 33% of the salary dues for the disgruntled workers but the workers have been demanding 100% pending dues from the company.

Pondy medical students get relief from high court

Chennai: In a big relief to scores of postgraduate medical students who were ordered by the Medical Council of India to be discharged from two Puducherry-based medical colleges, the Madras high court stayed the MCI orders till February 6.

Last month, the MCI had directed three medical colleges in Puducherry to discharge a total of 105 postgraduate medical students citing various irregularities in their admissions.

On Tuesday, Justice R Mahadevan, hearing the writ petitions of students studying at Sri Venkateshwara Medical College and Hospital and Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, granted the interim stay saying, “In the interest of justice, there shall be an order of interim stay till February 6, 2018." He then directed the MCI, the Centre and the Puducherry government to file their counter-affidavits.

It was MCI’s contention that those students had been admitted in violation of norms, and that they did not fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria as fixed by MCI.

The colleges concerned, it said, had not sent the correct list of eligible candidates to MCI.

Countering the charges, the students submitted that MCI’s December 21, 2017 order, confirming its own earlier order dated July 24, 2017, asking Venkateswara Medical College to discharge its PG medical students of 2017-18 batch, had been passed without any notice to the students concerned, and without affording them the opportunity of personal hearing. Hence it is vitiated, they said.

The only reason cited by MCI is that names of the students were found in the list provided by the nodal agency – CENTAC.

Denying the charge, the students submitted that the MCI had failed to see that they had directly reported PIMS on the instructions given by CENTAC authorities. CENTAC issued the said instructions as per the directive of the Union ministry of health and family welfare.

They said PG medical seats were vacant at PIMS and added that either there were no takers at all for the seats or candidates originally allotted had not reported for admission.

Sasi seeks till Feb 10 to appear before I-T

Chennai: Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s aide V K Sasikala has asked income tax officials to give her till February 10 to appear before them in connection with the department’s probe of undeclared investments by the sidelined AIADMK leader and her family members.

I-T officials — who are also investigating how a confidential note regarding the multi-crore gutka scam the department had sent to the former chief minister through the then DGP made its way to Sasikala’s rooms in Jayalalithaa’s Veda Nilayam residence — summoned Sasikala after searches in November and December of more than 187 properties linked to her, her relatives and friends.

“We want to question Sasikala about the documents we found,” a senior I-T official said. “We presented an affidavit in the Madras high court based on [the note from] the file of former DGP Ashok Kumar in the gutka case that we found in rooms that she occupied.” He said the department had last week served the summons on Sasikala, who has since February been incarcerated in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in the Jayalalithaa illegal wealth case.

“We have received a letter through her advocate on Tuesday stating that she is on a vow of silence and will be able to appear only after February 10,” the official said. I-T officials also seized pen drives and computer hard disks from the two rooms Sasikala occupied in Veda Nilayam.

Govt opens new dental college in Virudhunagar

Chennai: A 30-bed inpatient facility was inaugurated at the Madras Dental College by health minister C Vijaya Baskar on Tuesday.

Built at ₹1.22crore, it is one of the first such inpatient facilities in a dental college hospital, he said. He also inaugurated an operation theatre and a haematology lab on campus. “We will be inaugurating a dental college in Virudhunagar soon,” he said. This will be the second state-run dental college in the state which runs 23 medical college hospitals. The state is in the process of identifying land closer to a medical college hospital as per the mandate of the Dental Council of India, he said.

 Meanwhile, the state will expand its dental care facilities in all the government hospitals and primary health care centres, he said. The state will add 147 digital x-rays to its PHCs and equip upgraded 39 PHC as well, he said. TNN

Professor booked for embezzling university funds

Chennai: The director of physical education at Vellore-based Thiruvalluvar University has been booked by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) for embezzling the university's funds by providing false bills pertaining to sports events.

In one case, he also allegedly pocketed the funds meant for buying vests and shorts for students participating in sports by forcing them to sign vouchers.

The FIR, which charges professor A Amuldoss with cheating, forgery and corruption, was registered last week after a detailed enquiry. The university's inter-division athletic sports meet was held on December 20 in Tiruvannamalai. But Amuldoss allegedly submitted bills for ₹1.2 lakh stating the event was held on December 19 as well.

He submitted bogus bills for ₹15,000 showing purchase of mementos for the physical education professors of affiliated colleges, which were never given, the DVAC enquiry shows.

For this, Amuldoss allegedly purchased 100 wall clocks worth ₹150 each from a stationery shop in Mylapore. However, the shop owner told DVAC that he had provided blank bills to Amuldoss and that he is not even in the business of selling clocks.

For a rowing meet at Panjab University in 2012, Amuldoss allegedly submitted bills for five players whereas only two had actually gone there. For this, he had claimed ₹50,000 from the university. He had submitted bills in the name of 16 players for a weightlifting competition at Panjab University in February 2017. Bills of four players were forged as they had not attended the meet. One of them was down with chicken pox at the time, the DVAC enquiry shows. On other occasions, he allegedly produced fake bills in the names of other professors, the DVAC FIR states.

University sources said a few more officials are under the scanner.

Temple prasadam to soon have expiry date

Chennai: The famed panchmirtham of the Palani temple is believed to have preservative properties that make it suitable for consumption over a long period, even without refrigeration. But the next time you pay a visit, you will know exactly how long.

Prasadam distributed in temples administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) will soon have the shelf life printed on the containers to comply with the norms of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

HR&CE officials said the panchamirtham sold at the Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple in Palani would be the first of the prasadams to have an expiry date.

“We have sent the panchamirtham to the food safety authority for determination of its shelf life. After they issue a licence, we will start printing the date of expiry on the tins marketed at the counters of the temple,” a senior HR&CE official told TOI.

The food safety department will also test the prasadams of other temples to prescribe expiry dates.

Food handlers who prepare the holy prasadam have been trained to follow the norms of the food safety authority with respect to a host of parameters. Recently, 300 food handlers from 20 major temples across Tamil Nadu participated in a workshop on implementation of food safety and hygiene in places of worship under Project BHOG in New Delhi. The project is one of the safe and nutritious food initiatives launched by FSSAI a year ago.

The HR&CE department administers 36,565 temples in the state. While prasadam is sold across the counter in several temples, others provide it free of cost for devotees. Some popular temple prasadams include dosai at the Kallalagar temple at Madurai, idli at the Varadaraja Perumal temple at Kancheepuram and puttu at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in Madurai.

R Jaya, commissioner of HR&CE, told TOI that the FSSAI licence for panchamirtham was expected within 10 days. “Apart from this, steps are being taken to sell prasadams in eco-friendly containers,” she added.

Students riled over hike, Marina on police radar

Chennai: Concerned that protests against the recent bus fare hike have gained momentum among students and youngsters across the state, the government on Tuesday decided to deploy a police contingent at Marina Beach.

The authorities have been uneasy about the sands off Kamarajar Promenade serving as a protest venue since the massive pro-jallikattu agitation last January threatened to spill over from the beach and turn into a serious law and order problem.

By early Tuesday morning, there were policemen guarding the beach’s entry and exit points to prevent protesters from gathering there and officers and constables kept a leery eye out at colleges nearby to intercept groups of students from heading toward Marina. Personnel stopped, questioned and checked clutches of students near the beach to prevent a possible congregation.

“We received intelligence inputs that a group of protesters planned to assemble on Marina Beach,” a police officer said. “We had to take precautionary measures.”

The weeklong pro-jallikattu protests last January ended with a clash between policemen and protesters, following which the city police imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the vicinity till February 12. At the time, police officers said they were attempting to “preserve peace”. The state transport department, reacting to large numbers of college students reportedly joining in the protest against the increase in bus fares, on Tuesday stated the government does not intend to change the concessional rates for students on buses

Airfares go skyward ahead of Republic Day weekend

Chennai: Airfares to Mumbai, Delhi, Madurai, Singapore and Dubai shot up on Tuesday as demand peaked for short getaways over the Republic Day weekend.

One-way fares on most airlines were between ₹3,400 and ₹19,000 for morning flights on these routes, while return fares to Dubai and Singapore soared to ₹35,000 and more.

Fares were high for evening flights too. A one-way ticket to Delhi was ₹7,000 for Wednesday night; a flight on Thursday morning cost ₹19,000. Fares on the Chennai-Mumbai route ranged from ₹4,000 to ₹16,000. On the Madurai sector, it ranged between ₹5,000 and ₹14,000. Even low-cost carriers were charging ₹19,000 for evening and late-night flights.

FCM Travel Solutions India executive director Shravan Gupta said the Republic Day parade along Rajpath is always a big draw.

“We posted a steady rise in bookings at FCM for flights to New Delhi owing to the R-Day celebrations and the long weekend,” he said.

Other popular destinations on what is the first long weekend of the year were Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and the Andamans. Singapore, Thailand, Bali, the Maldives Mauritius and Dubai.

“We have recorded an increase in bookings by approximately 43% to these destinations over last year,” Gupta said.

The travel industry reported an increased interest in Dubai among flyers due to the coming shopping festival in the Gulf emirate.

Yatra.com chief operating officer Sharat Dhall said more people than ever appear to be making travel plans, causing the airfare surge.

“The Republic Day weekend is a very popular time for people to take a short break,” he said. “This is a trend we have seen over the past few years. Also, with adventure tourism getting popular, there’s been an upswing in bookings for destinations like Rishikesh and Coorg.”

சூரியனின் வடதிசை பயண மாதங்களை 'உத்திராயண புண்ணிய காலம்' என்பர். தை முதல் ஆனி வரை இது நிகழும். இந்த மாதங்களில் வரும் வளர்பிறை சப்தமி திதிகள், சூரியனுக்குரிய விரத நாட்கள் ஆகும். இதில் தை மாதம் வரும் சப்தமியை 'ரதசப்தமி' என்பர்.

சப்தமி விரதம் எளிமையானது. ஏழு எருக்க இலைகளை தலையில் வைத்து, கிழக்கு நோக்கி நின்று நீராட வேண்டும். பகலில் பட்டினியாக இருந்து, சூரியனுக்குரிய ஸ்தோத்திரங்கள், ஆதித்ய ஹ்ருதயம் ஆகியவற்றை சொல்லலாம். பட்டினி கிடக்க முடியாதவர்கள் எளிய உணவு சாப்பிடலாம். பூஜையறையில் தேர்க்கோலம் போட்டு, சர்க்கரை பொங்கல், கோதுமை பண்டங்கள் நைவேத்யம் செய்ய வேண்டும். ஏழைகளுக்கு செருப்பு, குடைகளை, தானம் கொடுப்பது நல்லது.
சூரியனின் கிரணங்கள் எருக்க இலை மூலம் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டு, உடலில் ஊடுருவி சென்று,

அரசின் விழுப்புரம், கோவை, சென்னை, மதுரை, கும்பகோணம் உள்ளிட்ட போக்குவரத்து கோட்டங்களாக உள்ளன. சென்னை மாநகர போக்குவரத்து கழகம், மாதந்தோறும், மாநகர பேருந்தில் விருப்ப பயணம் செல்ல, 1,000 ரூபாயும், ஒரு நாள் பயண கட்டணம், 50 ரூபாயும் நிர்ணயித்து, வழங்கி வந்தது.

சென்னை,

பஸ் கட்டணத்தை தமிழக அரசு உயர்த்தி இருப்பதற்கு பொதுமக்கள் மத்தியில் கடும் எதிர்ப்பு கிளம்பி உள்ளது.

குறிப்பாக தமிழகம் முழுவதும் மாணவ- மாணவிகள் அரசின் முடிவை எதிர்த்து போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு வருகிறார்கள்.

இந்த நிலையில் பள்ளி-கல்லூரி மாணவர்களுக்கு இலவச பஸ் பாஸ் தொடர்ந்து வழங்கப்படும். தனியார் கல்லூரி மாணவர்களுக்கான சலுகை பயண அட்டை பழைய அடிப்படையிலேயே தொடரும் என்று தமிழக அரசு அறிவித்துள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து தமிழக அரசின் போக்குவரத்துத்துறை சார்பில் நேற்று வெளியிடப்பட்ட செய்திக் குறிப்பில் கூறியிருப்பதாவது:-

* 1-ம் வகுப்பு முதல் 12-ம் வகுப்பு வரை படிக்கும் அனைத்து மாணவ-மாணவிகளுக்கும் (அரசு மற்றும் தனியார் பள்ளி) 100 சதவீதம் இலவச பயண சலுகையின் மூலம் 22 லட்சத்து 66 ஆயிரத்து 483 பயண அட்டைகள் (பஸ் பாஸ்) வழங்கப்பட்டுள் ளன. இந்த சலுகை, பேருந்துக் கட்டணம் மாற்றியமைத்த பின்பும் தொடர்ந்து வழங்கப்படும்.

* அரசு கலை மற்றும் அறிவி யல் கல்லூரி, அரசு பாலிடெக் னிக் கல்லூரி மற்றும் அரசு தொழிற் பயிற்சி நிலையங்களில் (ஐ.டி.ஐ.) கல்வி பயிலும் மாணவ- மாணவிகளுக்கு 100 சதவீதம் இலவச பயண சலுகையின் மூலம் முறையே 2 லட்சத்து 13 ஆயிரத்து 810, 35 ஆயிரத்து 921, 28 ஆயிரத்து 348 பயண அட்டைகள் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இந்த சலுகை, பேருந்துக் கட்டணம் மாற்றியமைத்த பின்பும் தொடர்ந்து வழங்கப்படும்.

* தனியார் கல்லூரிகளில் கல்வி பயிலும் 3.21 லட்சம் மாணவ-மாணவிகளுக்கு 50 சதவீதம் கட்டண சலுகையுடன் கூடிய பயண அட்டைகளை தமிழ்நாடு அரசு வழங்கியுள்ளது. இந்த சலுகையும், பழைய கட்டணத்தின் அடிப்படையிலேயே தொடர்ந்து வழங்கப்படும்.

மேற்படி பயண அட்டைகளை வழங்குவதற்கு ஆகும் செலவுகளை ஈடு செய்யும் பொருட்டு 2017-18-ம் ஆண்டில் 540.99 கோடி ரூபாயை அரசு போக்குவரத்துக் கழகங்களுக்கு தமிழ்நாடு அரசு மானியமாக வழங்கி உள்ளது.

பொதுமக்களுக்கு எழும் சிரமங்களை கருத்தில் கொண்டு தமிழ்நாடு அரசு, அனைத்து அரசு போக்குவரத்துக் கழகங்களில் ஏற்கனவே இருந்த சாதாரண மற்றும் விரைவு பேருந்துகளுடன், கூடுதலாக 498 சொகுசு பேருந்துகளை சாதாரண மற்றும் விரைவு கட்டண பேருந்துகளாக மாற்றி அமைத்து உள்ளது.

இவ்வாறு அதில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தாங்க முடியாத பஸ் கட்டணம்




தமிழ்நாட்டில் கடந்த 19–ந்தேதி இரவில் யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத வகையில் பஸ் கட்டணம் உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. இந்த உயர்வும் சாதாரணமாக உயர்த்தப்படவில்லை.

தமிழ்நாட்டில் கடந்த 19–ந்தேதி இரவில் யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத வகையில் பஸ் கட்டணம் உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. இந்த உயர்வும் சாதாரணமாக உயர்த்தப்படவில்லை. அதிகபட்சமாக இருமடங்கு அளவுக்கு ஒரேநேரத்தில் கட்டணம் உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. நகரபஸ்களில் குறைந்தபட்ச கட்டணம் ரூ.3–ல் இருந்து ரூ.6 ஆக அதிகரித்தது. மாநகர், புறநகர் கட்டணம் மட்டுமல்லாமல், அனைத்து பஸ்களிலும் கட்டணம் அபரிமிதமாக உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. 19–ந்தேதி இரவு உயர்த்தப்படுவதாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு, 20–ந்தேதி அதிகாலை முதல் அமலுக்கு வந்ததால், இந்த விவரமே தெரியாமல் பழைய கட்டண தொகையை பையில் வைத்துக்கொண்டு ஏறிய பயணிகள் பஸ்சில் செல்ல முடியாமலும், புறப்பட்டு சிறிதுநேரம் கழித்து இடையில் இறக்கிவிடப்பட்ட நிலையில், பெரிதும் பாதிப்பு அடைந்தனர். கூடுதல் கட்டணத்தினால் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் மாதாந்திர பட்ஜெட்டில் துண்டுவிழுகிறது. சென்னை முகப்பேரில் இருந்து எழும்பூருக்கு தினமும் வந்து செல்கிறவர்கள்கூட மாதம் ரூ.600 கூடுதலாக செலவழிக்க வேண்டியதிருக்கிறது. இப்போதுள்ள புதிய கட்டண விகிதத்தை ரெயில்வே கட்டணத்துடன் ஒப்பிடும்போது நிறைய வித்தியாசம் இருக்கிறது. தென்மாவட்டமான திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டத்தில், அம்பாசமுத்திரத்தில் இருந்து திருநெல்வேலிக்கு உயர்த்தப்பட்ட பஸ் கட்டணம் ரூ.48 ஆகும். ஆனால், பயணிகள் ரெயில் கட்டணம் ரூ.10 தான்.

இதுபோல, சென்னையில் இருந்து கோயம்புத்தூருக்கு அரசு டீலக்ஸ் பஸ் கட்டணம் ரூ.571. ஆனால், படுக்கை வசதி ரெயில் கட்டணம் ரூ.315 தான். மதுரைக்கு பஸ் கட்டணம் ரூ.515. ரெயில் கட்டணம் படுக்கைவசதியோடு ரூ.315 தான். கன்னியாகுமரிக்கு பஸ் கட்டணம் ரூ.778. ரெயில் கட்டணம் ரூ.415 தான். இதனால், மக்கள் பஸ்சில் செல்லவிரும்பாததால், ரெயில்களில் கூட்டம் அலைமோதுகிறது. சென்னையில் மின்சார ரெயிலில் செல்வதற்காக ரெயில் நிலையங்களில் திருவிழா கூட்டம்போல மக்கள் நிற்கிறார்கள். தமிழக அரசு பஸ் கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தியதற்கான காரணத்தை சொல்லும்போது, 18–11–2011 அன்று பஸ் கட்டணம் உயர்த்தப்பட்டப்பிறகு, தமிழ்நாட்டில் பஸ் கட்டணம் உயர்த்தப்படவில்லை. அண்டை மாநிலங்களான ஆந்திரா, கர்நாடகா, கேரளா ஆகிய மாநிலங்கள் அடிக்கடி பஸ் கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தியது. ஆனால், தமிழ்நாட்டில் அப்படி உயர்த்தவில்லை என்று கூறியுள்ளது. இது நிச்சயமாக ஏற்புடையதல்ல. அவ்வப்போது புதிய பஸ்கள் விலை உயர்வு, உதிரிபாகங்கள் விலை உயர்வு, பராமரிப்பு செலவு அதிகரிப்பு, பணியாளர்களுக்கான ஊதிய உயர்வு போன்ற செலவு அதிகமாகும்போது, அதை ஈடுகட்ட கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக பஸ் கட்டணத்தை ஏற்றியிருந்தால், இவ்வளவு பெரிய சுமையை ஒரேநேரத்தில் சுமத்தவேண்டிய அவசியம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்காது.

இவ்வளவு கட்டணத்தை கொடுத்து பஸ்சில் ஏறும்போது, அதற்கு ஏற்றவகையில் நமது பஸ்கள் இல்லை. தமிழக போக்குவரத்துக்கழக 22 ஆயிரம் பஸ்களில், 15 ஆயிரம் பஸ்கள் வாங்கி 6½ ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாகிவிட்டது என்று போக்குவரத்துத்துறை கூடுதல் தலைமைச் செயலாளர் டேவிதார் கூறியிருக்கிறார். தினமும் 2 கோடியே 2 லட்சம் மக்கள் பயணம் செய்யும்நிலையில், அந்த எண்ணிக்கை குறையாமல் தொடர்ந்து பயணம் செய்யவேண்டும் என்றால் நேரம் தவறாமை, கூடுதல் வசதிகளுடன் பஸ்களை இயக்கவேண்டும்.

கணவனே தோழன்: முதுமையில் ஊஞ்சலாடும் இளமை

நான் பணி நிறைவு பெற்ற ஆசிரியை. எனக்கு 80 வயது, என் கணவருக்கு 90. ஆனால், இந்த வயதிலும் என் இளமைக்கால நினைவுகள் என் கண் முன்னே கடந்து சென்றுகொண்டிருக்கின்றன. எனக்கென்னவோ இந்தக் காலத்தைவிட அந்தக் காலத்தில்தான் அதிக த்ரில்லாக இருந்ததுபோல் தெரிகிறது. அப்போ எல்லாம் கணவரிடம் பேசும் நேரம் மிகவும் குறைவு. கணவர் வேலைக்குச் செல்வதால் வீட்டில் இருக்கும் நேரம் மிகவும் குறைவு. அதனாலேயே கணவன், மனைவி இருவருக்குமான பேச்சும் குறைவாகத்தான் இருக்கும்.

ஆனால், இன்றைக்கும் அதே நிலைதான் நீடிக்கிறது. கணவன், மனைவி ஒரே வீட்டில் இருந்தாலும் இருவரும் செல்போனில் மூழ்கியிருக்கிறார்கள். இன்றைய இளம் தம்பதிகள் வெளியூர்களுக்குச் சென்று தேனிலவு கொண்டாடுவதுபோல் எங்கள் தலைமுறைக்கு எதுவும் வாய்க்கவில்லை. கணவருடனான சிறு சிறு மகிழ்ச்சியான தருணங்கள், துக்கம், மகிழ்ச்சி, சண்டை என எல்லாம் சமையலறையில்தான் நடக்கும்.

குழந்தைகளின் முதல் வகுப்பு பாடப்புத்தகத்தில் குடும்பம் என்பதை விளக்க ஒரு படம் போட்டிருப்பார்கள். அதில் அப்பா நாற்காலியில் உட்கார்ந்துகொண்டு பேப்பர் படித்துக்கொண்டிருப்பார். அம்மா கையில் காபி வைத்துக்கொண்டிருப்பார். அதுபோல்தான் அந்தக் கால வாழ்க்கை முறை இருந்தது. குடும்ப அமைப்பு முறை எப்படியிருந்தாலும் கணவன், மனைவிக்கு இடையே ஈகோ இல்லை. நானும் என் கணவரும் அப்படித்தான் இருந்தோம்.

வீட்டில் இடி இடிக்கும்; மழை பெய்யும்; மின்னல் மின்னும்; தென்றல் வீசும். ஆனால், என் கணவரின் அன்பு மட்டும் மாறாமல் இருந்தது. தற்போது முதுமையிலும் அவர் என் மீது வைத்துள்ள அன்பைப் பார்க்கும்போது எனக்கே வியப்பாக இருக்கிறது. மும்பையில் இருக்கும் எங்கள் மகன் வீட்டில் இருந்து விமானம் மூலமாகச் சென்னைக்குத் திரும்பினோம்.

அப்போது பேரக் குழந்தைகள், “தாத்தாவைப் பார்த்துக்கோ பாட்டி” எனச் சொன்னார்கள். அந்த நொடி அவர் கையைப் பற்றிக்கொண்டு விமானத்தில் வந்தது முதுமையில் தேனிலவு போனதுபோல் இருந்தது. தற்போது முதுமை காரணமாக இருவரும் ஒருவருடைய கையை ஒருவர் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு விழாமல் நடக்கும்போது எங்கள் இருவருக்குள் இளமை ஊஞ்சலாடுகிறது!

உடல் மெய்ப்பை என்றால் வயிறு தோல் பை. உடலின் முக்கிய உள்ளுறுப்புகள், உணவு, நீர் எல்லாவற்றையும் பாதுகாக்கின்ற பெரும்பொறுப்பு இந்த வயிற்றுக்கு உண்டு. ஒரு சாண் வயிறு நமது தவறான நடவடிக்கைகளால் விரிவடைந்து மேலும் கீழும் பக்கவாட்டிலும் பருமனடைந்து விரிவதே தொப்பை எனப்படுகிறது. தோல் பை விரிவடைவதால் வருவது தொப்பை. தொந்தி என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது. வயிறில் இருக்கும் கொழுப்புகள் அதிகமாகி சேர்ந்து விடுவதே தொப்பை உண்டாகக் காரணமாகிறது.




அதிகமான தொப்பையால் மூச்சு வாங்குவதில் தொடங்கி உயர் ரத்த அழுத்தம், சர்க்கரை நோய், இதயநோய்கள், பக்கவாதம், கேன்சர் என பல நோய்கள் வரக்காரணமாகி விடுகிறது. ஆனால் எல்லா தொப்பைகளும் ஆபத்தானதில்லை என்றே மருத்துவம் கூறுகின்றது. தொளதொளவென்று அசையும் அல்லது பிடித்து இழுக்கும் விதமாக இருக்கும் தொப்பையால் பெரிதாக ஆபத்தில்லை. ஏனென்றால் இந்த வகை தொப்பையில் subcutaneous fat மட்டுமே உள்ளது. இதை எளிதாக குறைக்க முடியும். ஆனால் Visceral fat எனும் கொழுப்பைக் கொண்ட கெட்டியான அசைக்க முடியாத உறுதியான தொப்பைதான் பல நோய்களை உருவாக்கிவிடும். எனவே இந்த வகை தொப்பை வரமால் பாதுகாத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.



அதிக நீர், குறைவான உப்பு மற்றும் சர்க்கரை, நேரத்துக்கு சீரான உணவு, உணவினை பிரித்து 5 வேளையாக உண்ணுதல், நல்ல உடற்பயிற்சி போன்றவை தொப்பை வரமால் உதவும். இஞ்சி, எலுமிச்சை சாறு, தேன், பூண்டு, க்ரீன் டீ, தயிர், சிட்ரஸ், பட்டை போன்றவைகளை உணவில் எடுத்துக்கொண்டால் தொப்பை குறையவும் வாய்ப்புள்ளது என்கிறார்கள். எனவே உங்களுக்கு என்ன வகை தொப்பை என்பதை கண்டறிந்து உடனே அதை குறைக்கும் வழியை பாருங்கள்.

SALEM: Erode police have handed over to a forensic lab in Chennai a seven-page explosive note purported to have been written by former registrar of Salem Periyar University K Angamuthu before he committed suicide by consuming pesticide pills on December 18. 

The note levels allegations against former VC of Periyar University C Swaminathan, his former personal assistants N Nelson and S Rajamanickam, K S Sridhar and R Kulandaivel besides current registrar M Manivannan. It says that Swaminathan was responsible for all the irregularities that took place in the University and that he himself (the person who wrote the note) committed the irregularities with Swaminathan's consent.

Angamuthu's family members, including his wife Vijayalakshmi, daughter S Sowmiya and cousin N Sadasivam, handed over the letter to Erode district superintendent of police R Sivakumar five days ago. The SP immediately forwarded the note to the forensic lab in Chennai to check the authenticity of the letter and to verify whether the handwriting matched that of Angamuthu. "We will investigate the case further based on the authenticity of the note," the SP said.

The former registrar, who was under the scanner of the higher education department for allegedly destroying files pertaining to faculty recruitment during the period 2012-13, figured among the top 10 candidates for the post of the University VC. The university had filed a police complaint about the missing files, believed to have been destroyed, a day before Angamuthu committed suicide.

Angamuthu's elder daughter Sowmiya told TOI that she believed the note was written by her father before he ended his life. "I know my father's handwriting well and it is his suicide note," she said. She would take the matter to court if police failed to take action against persons whose names were mentioned in the note, she said.

The note said, "I was the middleman to many dealings of Swaminathan and he had given me Rs10 crore during his tenure." Swaminathan took all the files, including those pertaining to appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff, said the note. "But, everyone blamed me and cornered me into handing over the files," added the note.

When contacted by TOI, Swaminathan denied the allegations. He said he was ready to prove everything legally. "I am innocent and I don't know anything about the allegations," he said. People working against him might have written this letter, he said.

Dismissing the allegations, registrar of the University Manivannan said the issue did not take place during his tenure. "How can I be held responsible?" he asked. A personal assistant Nelson said he worked for Angamuthu only to maintain 'leave letters' and nothing more. "I am in no way linked to the allegations raised in the note," he said. "Why weren't our names raised when higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal questioned Angamuthu about the missing files?" he asked.

Airlines mull in-flight Wi-Fi but may charge 30% of fare

Representative Image CHENNAI: Travellers may soon be able to post a selfie, or photo of a meal, on social media while on board a flight but may have to shell out at least 20-30% of the fare if they opt to use in-flight data connectivity. Airlines are considering options to introduce the facility after Trai issued an order permitting in-flight voice and data connectivity. 

The move may help airlines add value to their business class travellers on domestic and international routes but may not be an option for low-cost carriers.

Officials said the charges for net connection might range from Rs500 to Rs1000 for thirty minutes to an hour as per international standards and also taking into account the charges levied by service providers for slots on satellites. Airlines have to pay service providers like Inmarsat and others a hefty sum to activate in-flight net connectivity.

With advance booking fares starting from Rs1,200 to Rs2,500 on short domestic routes, in-flight internet connectivity may be too expensive for passengers and airlines in the domestic sector.

An airline official said that Trai's order permitting in-flight net connection would be an advantage for flights that traverse the peninsula on intercontinental routes. These flights do not have to switch off the WiFi when in Indian airspace, he added.


"We are reviewing the order and are discussing the feasibility of having the facility on domestic flights. The cost and demand may have to be factored in before taking a decision," said an official of a private airline. Airlines will have to install antennae on planes based on how they decide to receive and send the signals, either over mobile towers on the ground or over satellites.

Frequent travellers say that except for a handful of business travellers there are no takers for in-flight internet even on international routes. Air Passengers Association of India national president D Sudhakara Reddy said, "The in-flight data connectivity may be useful on long-haul flights. But I have hardly seen anyone use it or ask for it on international routes. It may be good in an emergency. Going by the international experience of passengers, it may not be viable for low-cost carriers."

Some airlines allow passengers to use Wi-Fi free of charge for WhatsApp and other messenger services which may not need much bandwidth. Lufthansa, Emirates, British Airways and Delta are among the airlines that offer the service on international routes.

Varsity staff submit petitions

The Tiruvalluvar University Employees Union submitted a petition to Governor Banwarilal Purohit seeking action against “rampant corruption” in the university.

I. Elangovan, honorary president of the union, said the university had awarded tenders for examination work to the same company six times since November 2013.

It had again given the work to the company without calling for tenders for the November-December 2017 semester examination works.

“About Rs. 17.5 crore has been spent for the seven semester examinations,” he said.

He alleged that the 65 university employees were not reinstated despite a court direction. Though the university disbursed salaries to the employees, they were not reinstated, he said.
“In their place, nearly 53 persons have been recruited on contract basis. This has led to double expenditure. When the dismissed employees were working in the office of the Controller of Examinations, Rs. 13,00,000 was spent for each semester examination, while by outsourcing the work to a private firm, the university was spending Rs. 2.46 crore for each semester examination,” he said.

In another petition, he said that of the 7,000 teachers working in the 112 affiliated colleges of Tiruvalluvar University, 5,154 teachers did not possess SET, NET, Ph.D qualifications.

“The answer scripts are being evaluated by teachers who are not qualified,” he added. He said that the Governor assured him that the petitions would be forwarded to the Principal Secretary of Higher Education.

A number of farmers submitted petitions to the Governor. A.C. Venkatesan, farmer and Palar activist, urged him to implement the long-pending Thenpennai-Palar river link project.
He appealed to him to make an announcement to implement the project in the coming budget session, allot required funds and execute the project that will serve as a lifeline for the northern districts.

The Thamizhaga Vivasaigal Sangam urged Mr. Purohit to take measures to order sugar mills to pay the arrears for three years to cane growers and waive bank loans to farmers.

Medico found dead on rail track

A third-year MBBS student of K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College was found dead on the track near Railway Junction on Monday.

The student, Premkumar is from Athikadu Kilapalayam in Namakkal district. According to preliminary enquiries, the boy faced no problems either at college or at home. Police are checking the phone call details.

The body was handed over to his parents after post-mortem.

She was admitted to hospital after a road accident

The Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital witnessed some touching moments, when a 50-year-old woman undergoing treatment after meeting with a road accident, passed away hours after blessing his newly wed son and daughter-in-law on Sunday.

Santhi (50) of Rasipuram in Namakkal district and employed as a cook, met with a road accident and suffered serious injuries a few days ago. She was admitted to the medical college hospital here. The marriage of Santhi’s only son Prabakaran (27) was fixed with Nandini (20) of Attayampatti in the recent past.

As Santhi’s condition was deteriorating, she expressed her willingness to solemnise the marriage of her son immediately. She persuaded Prabakaran, following which he and other relatives took up the matter with Nandini’s relatives.

Understanding the situation, Nandini’s parents accepted for the sudden marriage to be performed on Saturday. Meawhile, Santhi went into a coma.

Prabakaran tied the knot with Nandini at the Vinayagar Temple in the medical college hospital on Saturday morning in the presence of handful of close relatives of both the sides.

With tears rolling down the cheek, Prabakaran and Nandini touched the feet of Santhi lying in coma and got her blessings.

Santhi passed off peacefully on Sunday.
