திருப்பதியில் வாடகை அறை எடுத்துத் தங்குபவர்களுக்கு ஒரு முக்கிய அறிவிப்பு!

திருப்பதியில் ஜூலை 1-ம் தேதி முதல் வாடகை அறை வழங்கும் நடைமுறைகளில் சிறிய மாற்றத்தை தேவஸ்தானம் கொண்டு வர உள்ளதாக அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

ஏழுமலையானைத் தரிசிக்க வரும் பக்தர்கள், திருப்பதியில் உள்ள தேவஸ்தானத்திற்கு சொந்தமான வாடகை வளாகங்களில் அறை எடுத்துத் தங்கி வருகின்றனர். இந்த வளாகங்களில், தர்ம தரிசன நேர ஒதுக்கீடு டோக்கன் கவுன்ட்டர்களும் செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றன. இந்த வாடகை அறைகளை 90 நாள்களுக்கு முன் இணையதளம் வழியாக முன்பதிவு செய்து கொள்ளும் வசதியை தேவஸ்தானம் அளித்து வந்தது. ஆனால், நேரடியாக வரும் பக்தர்களுக்கு வாடகை அறை வழங்குவதில் சிக்கல் ஏற்படுவதால், தேவஸ்தானம் இந்த நடைமுறையில் சிறிய மாற்றத்தைச் செய்துள்ளது.


திருப்பதி ரயில் நிலையம் அருகில் உள்ள விஷ்ணு நிவாசம் வளாகத்தில் உள்ள வாடகை அறைகள், நேரடி முன்பதிவில் மட்டுமே வழங்கப்பட உள்ளன. பக்தர்கள் அறை ஒதுக்கீட்டைப் பெற்ற பின், 24 மணிநேரத்திற்குள் அறையைக் காலி செய்ய வேண்டும். மேலும் பேருந்து நிலையம் எதிரில் உள்ள சீனிவாசம் மற்றும் மாதவம் உள்ளிட்ட வளாகங்களில் உள்ள வாடகை அறைகள் இணையதள முன்பதிவு மூலம் மட்டுமே வழங்கப்பட உள்ளன.

இணையதளம் வாயிலாக வாடகை அறை முன்பதிவு செய்பவர்கள் முன்பதிவு செய்யப்பட்ட நேரத்திற்கு வரத் தவறினாலும், முன்பதிவில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ள 24 மணி நேரத்திற்குள் அறையைக் காலி செய்ய வேண்டும். அவர்களுக்கு நேர நீட்டிப்பு வழங்கப்பட மாட்டாது. இந்த மாற்றம் வரும் ஜூலை 1-ஆம் தேதி முதல் அமலுக்கு வர உள்ளதாக அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

CHENNAI: Rain after almost 200 days did a few things – it brought down the searing temperatures, partially filled water bodies such as temple tanks and ponds that were bone dry for two months and sensitized residents about rainwater harvesting.

If many in Chennai put out pots to ‘catch’ the rain amid a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening, resident associations are now coming together to set up rainwater harvesting structures, something they have not done for years. At Mogappair West, Golden Fortune Southern Enclave Owners Association is meeting on Sunday to find a solution to the crisis its 500-plus residents are facing. “Our wells have very little water and the borewell water is not usable. We will harvest every drop of rainwater from now,” said V Santosh, the association secretary. “Harvesting could bring down the salt content in the borewell water as well,” he said.

Hydrogeologist J Saravanan said those who understood the importance of rainwater harvesting are reaping the benefits, although little. “In buildings where the structures have been maintained, the quality and quantity of water will improve.”

At the women’s hostel at College of Engineering, Guindy, water collected on the roof enters a filter chamber and then into a 36,000-litre sump. But the recent rain brought in 36,000 litres and the sump overflowed.

At the Guindy National Park, wildlife officials said the rain partially filled six ponds. The tank at the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore has some water now.

While small changes were visible on the surface, the rain would not make any difference below it, said Metrowater officials.

“Only the permeable layer would have got wet in the rains and around 20% of the water would have been absorbed,” said an official.

The city has clayey soil and sandy soil in different areas. While water would be absorbed by clayey soil instantly and percolate into the aquifer, in areas with sandy soil, water will take a couple of hours to percolate. “But that said, only after a couple of heavy showers an improvement could be recorded in the soil,” the official said.

Transgender nurse fears she may have to tell a lie to practise in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: In 2014, Rakshika Raj joined the nursing course as a male because the state medical university did not have provision for admitting a transgender. In the next three years, Rakshika changed the gender in all her documents, including her Class X and Class XII certificates, to ‘T’.

On Saturday, Rakshika walked on to the dais to receive her graduation dressed in a sari, but as a transgender, amidst thundering applause.

“It was a proud moment for me. Not just because I graduated as a nurse but also because I was recognised as a transgender,” Rakshika said.

But the new graduate says her happiness was only momentary. The degree she received was for a he/she and not T. If Rakshika wants to practise nursing, she has to register herself with the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council. “The council has asked me to register as a ‘female’ because it doesn’t have provisions for transgender people,” Rakshika said.

Rakshika fears she may not be able to make nursing her profession. “I am a neither a man nor a woman. I am a transgender and all my documents show that. I want to be registered as one. If I register my gender as a woman, I will be telling a lie and that is illegal too,” Rakshika said.

The transgender says she has fought many battles with her family and friends to live like a transgender. “I got support from college and a few friends. I appeal to the state health department to bring in legislation for accommodating transgender people,” Rakshika said.

சென்னை, நாகர்கோவிலில் இருந்து தாம்பரத்துக்கு இயக்கப்படும் அந்தியோதயா ரயிலின் வேகம் அதிகரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.நாகர்கோவிலில் இருந்து தினமும் மாலை 3:50க்கு இயக்கப்படும் அந்தியோதயா எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் மறுநாள் காலை 9:45 மணிக்கு தாம்பரம் வந்தடையும். இந்த ரயிலின் வேகம் ஜூலை 1 முதல் அதிகரிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. அதனால் ரயில் நாகர்கோவிலில் இருந்து மாலை 3:50க்கு புறப்பட்டு வழக்கமான நேரத்தை விட 2 மணி 10 நிமிடங்கள் முன்னதாக காலை 7:35க்கு தாம்பரம் வந்தடையும்.

சென்னை, 'யோகா மற்றும் இயற்கை மருத்துவ படிப்பிற்கு ஜூலை 1 முதல் விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம்' என இந்திய மருத்துவம் மற்றும் ஓமியோபதி துறை அறிவித்துள்ளது.இந்திய மருத்துவம் மற்றும் ஓமியோபதி துறையின் கீழ் சென்னை - அரும்பாக்கம், நெல்லை, திருமங்கலம், கோட்டாறு ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் ஆறு மருத்துவ கல்லுாரிகள் உள்ளன.இதில் சித்தா, ஆயுர்வேதா, யுனானி, ஓமியோபதி, யோகா மற்றும் இயற்கை மருத்துவம் படிப்புகளுக்கு 390 இடங்கள் உள்ளன. இதேபோல் தனியார் மருத்துவ கல்லுாரிகளில் மாநில அரசு ஒதுக்கீட்டிற்கு 1200 இடங்கள் உள்ளன.

இதில் யோகா மற்றும் இயற்கை மருத்துவ படிப்புகள் பிளஸ் 2 மதிப்பெண் அடிப்படையிலும் மற்ற படிப்புகளுக்கான மாணவர் சேர்க்கை 'நீட்' தேர்வு மதிப்பெண் அடிப்படையிலும் நடைபெற உள்ளன.இந்நிலையில் யோகா மற்றும் இயற்கை மருத்துவ படிப்புக்கு ஜூலை 1 முதல் விண்ணப்பம் வினியோகம் துவங்கும் என தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

நெல்லை, சேலம் உள்ளிட்ட முக்கிய நகரங்களுக்குச் செல்லும் ரயில்களின் நேரங்கள் மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளளன. அதன்படி, சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து திருநெல்வேலி செல்லும் நெல்லை ரயில் இரவு 8.10 மணிக்குப் பதிலாக 7.50 மணிக்குப் புறப்படும். இதேபோன்று சென்னை சென்ட்ரல், எழும்பூர் ஆகிய ரயில் நிலையங்களில் இருந்து புறப்படும், ரயில் நிலையங்களுக்கு வந்து சேரும் 43 ரயில்களின் நேரம் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. இந்த நேர மாற்றம் வரும் திங்கள்கிழமை (ஜூலை 1) முதல் நடைமுறைக்கு வருகிறது.
கொல்லம், நிஜாமுதீன் ரயில்கள்: வெளியூர்களில் இருந்து சென்னை எழும்பூர் ரயில்நிலையத்துக்கு வந்தடையும் 13 ரயில்களின் நேரம் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. சேலத்தில் இருந்து சென்னை எழும்பூருக்கு தினசரி அதிகாலை 3.45 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும் விரைவு ரயில் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, 5 நிமிஷம் முன்னதாக அதிகாலை 3.40 மணிக்கு எழும்பூர் வந்து சேரும். கொல்லத்தில் இருந்து சென்னை எழும்பூருக்கு தினசரி காலை 8.10 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும் விரைவு ரயில் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, தினசரி காலை 8.20 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும். 

நிஜாமுதீனில் இருந்து மதுரைக்கு புதன், வெள்ளிக்கிழமை இயக்கப்படும் நிஜாமுதீன் விரைவு ரயில் சென்னை எழும்பூருக்கு மாலை 6.05 மணிக்கு வந்துசேரும். இந்த ரயிலின் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, 10 நிமிஷம் முன்னதாக மாலை 5.55 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும். 

இதுபோன்று, நிஜாமுதீனில் இருந்து எழும்பூர் வழியாக கன்னியாகுமரி செல்லும் விரைவு ரயிலின் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, எழும்பூருக்கு 10 நிமிஷம் முன்னதாக மாலை 5.55 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும்.
இதுதவிர, பிற இடங்களில் இருந்து எழும்பூருக்கு வந்து சேரும் 10 ரயில்களின் நேரம் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன.

சென்னை-நெல்லை, குருவாயூர் ரயில்கள்: சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து குருவாயூருக்கு தினசரி காலை 8.15 மணிக்கு புறப்பட வேண்டிய குருவாயூர் விரைவு ரயிலின் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு காலை 8.25 மணிக்கு புறப்படும். சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து கொல்லத்துக்கு தினசரி இரவு 7.50 மணிக்கு புறப்படவேண்டிய விரைவுரயில் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, இரவு 8.10 மணிக்கு புறப்படும். சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து திருநெல்வேலிக்கு தினசரி இரவு 8.10 மணிக்கு புறப்படும் நெல்லை விரைவு ரயிலின் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, இரவு 7.50 மணிக்கு புறப்படும். 

சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து தஞ்சாவூருக்கு தினசரி இரவு 10.40 மணிக்கு புறப்படும் உழவன் விரைவுரயில் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, தினசரி இரவு 10.55 மணிக்கு புறப்படும். சென்னை எழும்பூரில் இருந்து சேலத்துக்கு தினசரி இரவு 11 மணிக்கு புறப்படும் விரைவு ரயில் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, தினசரி இரவு 10.45 மணிக்கு புறப்பட்டு செல்லும். இந்த நேரம் மாற்றம் ஜூலை 1-ஆம் தேதி முதல் அமலுக்கு வருகிறது.

சென்ட்ரல் ரயில்நிலையத்துக்கு வரும் ரயில்கள் நேரம் மாற்றம்: மேட்டுபாளையத்தில் இருந்து சென்னை சென்ட்ரல் ரயில்நிலையத்துக்கு தினசரி காலை 5.05 மணிக்கு வந்தடையும் நீலகிரி விரைவு ரயில் 5 நிமிஷம் முன்னதாக காலை 5 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும். 

திருவனந்தபுரத்தில் இருந்து சென்ட்ரல் ரயில் நிலையத்துக்கு தினசரி நண்பகல் 12 மணிக்கு வந்து சேரும் திருவனந்தபுரம் விரைவு ரயிலின் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு, காலை 10.15 மணிக்கு வந்துசேரும். இதுதவிர, 4 ரயில்கள் வந்துசேரும் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது.

புறப்படும் ரயில்கள் நேரம் மாற்றம்: சென்னை சென்ட்ரலில் இருந்து கே.எஸ்.ஆர். பெங்களூருவுக்கு தினசரி காலை 7.50 மணிக்கு புறப்படவேண்டிய ரயிலின் நேரம் மாற்றப்பட்டு 10 நிமிஷம் முன்னதாக காலை 7.40 மணிக்கு புறப்படும். இதுதவிர, 9 ரயில்களின் புறப்படும் நேரம் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தமிழ்நாடு டாக்டர் எம்ஜிஆர் மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழக பட்டமளிப்பு விழாவில் இம்முறை இணையவழி நேரலை முறை மூலம் மாணவர்களுக்கு பட்டங்கள் வழங்கப்பட உள்ளன.அதன்படி, விழா நடைபெறும் அரங்கத்துக்கு வெளியேயும், பிற இடங்களிலும் உள்ள மாணவர்களுக்கு ஆளுநர் காணொலிக்காட்சி வாயிலாக பட்டங்களை வழங்க உள்ளார். தமிழகத்தில் இதுபோன்ற நவீன தொழில்நுட்ப வசதிகளின் மூலம் பட்டமளிப்பு விழா நடத்தப்படுவது இதுவே முதன்முறையாகும். 

தமிழ்நாடு டாக்டர் எம்ஜிஆர் மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் கீழ் 600-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கல்வி நிறுவனங்கள் இயங்கி வருகின்றன. அவற்றில், இளநிலை மற்றும் முதுநிலை மருத்துவம், பல் மருத்துவம், செவிலியர் படிப்புகள், மருத்துவம் சார்ந்த பிற படிப்புகள் என நூற்றுக்கணக்கான படிப்புகள் உள்ளன. அந்த கல்லூரிகளில் ஆண்டுதோறும் பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கானோர் தங்களது படிப்புகளை நிறைவு செய்கின்றனர். அந்த வரிசையில் நிகழாண்டில் 22,929 மாணவர்கள் பட்டப் படிப்புகளை முடித்துள்ளனர். அவர்களுக்கு சனிக்கிழமை (ஜூன் 29) சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழக நூற்றாண்டு அரங்கில் நடைபெறும் விழாவில் பட்டங்கள் வழங்கப்பட உள்ளன.

பொதுவாகவே, மருத்துவம் மற்றும் அதைச்சார்ந்த படிப்புகளை நிறைவு செய்பவர்கள் அதிக எண்ணிக்கையில் இருப்பார்கள் என்பதால் அவர்கள் அனைவரையும் ஒரே அரங்கில் அமரச் செய்து பட்டங்களை அளிக்க இயலாது. அந்த அளவுக்கு இருக்கைகள் கொண்ட அரங்குகளும் எங்கும் இல்லை. 

இதனால், சில ஆயிரம் மாணவர்களை மட்டும் பட்டமளிப்பு விழாவில் பங்குபெறச் செய்வது வழக்கம். பிறருக்கு சம்பந்தப்பட்ட கல்லூரிகளின் வாயிலாக பட்டங்கள் அளிக்கப்படும்.

இந்நிலையில், நிகழாண்டு நடைபெறும் பட்டமளிப்பு விழாவில் 4,745 மாணவர்கள் நேரடியாக கலந்துகொள்கின்றனர். விழா நடைபெறும் சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழக நூற்றாண்டு விழா அரங்கில் அத்தனை பேரும் அமர முடியாது என்பதால் எம்ஜிஆர் மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழக வளாகத்தில் தற்காலிக அரங்கு ஒன்று அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

 
அதேபோன்று மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் அரங்கிலும் மாணவர்களில் ஒரு பகுதியினர் அமர வைக்கப்பட உள்ளனர். இந்த மூன்று இடங்களிலும் உள்ள மாணவர்களையும் ஒருங்கிணைப்பதற்கு இணையவழி நேரலை முறை பயன்படுத்தப்பட உள்ளது. அதன்படி, 5 கேமராக்கள் மூலமாக நிகழ்ச்சிகள் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டு மூன்று இடங்களிலும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள 5 திரைகளில் நேரலையாக ஒளிபரப்பு செய்யப்படும். 

இதன் மூலம், சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழக அரங்க மேடையில் உள்ள ஆளுநர், மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழக அரங்கங்களில் அமர்ந்திருக்கும் மாணவர்களை காணொலிக்காட்சி வாயிலாக பார்த்து பட்டங்களை அளிப்பார்.
சம்பந்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்களும் ஆளுநர் முன்னிலையில் பட்டமேற்பு உறுதிமொழியை ஏற்பார்கள். இதற்கு முன்பு வரை எந்தப் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திலும் இத்தகைய நவீன தொழில்நுட்ப முறையில் பட்டமளிப்பு விழா நடத்தப்பட்டதில்லை. ரூ.6.5 லட்சம் செலவில் இந்த ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்யப்பட்டிருப்பதாக மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழக வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

இதுகுறித்து பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் துணைவேந்தர் டாக்டர் சுதா சேஷய்யன் கூறியதாவது:

பட்டமளிப்பு விழாவில் ஆன்லைன் மூலம் மாணவர்களை இணைப்பதற்காக தேசிய அறிவுசார் இணையமானது (என்கேஎன்) இலவசமாக இணைய சேவைகளை வழங்கியுள்ளது. இதைத் தவிர பிஎஸ்என்எல் சேவையும் பயன்பாட்டில் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த முறை பல்வேறு புதிய முயற்சிகள் முன்னெடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. 

மாணவர்களை ஒருங்கிணைக்கும் நெறி மேலாண்மை நடவடிக்கைகளில் ஊர்க் காவல் படையினர் 50 பேரை ஈடுபடுத்த இருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
இணையவழி நேரலை நடவடிக்கைளிலும், விழா ஏற்பாடுகளிலும் பல்வேறு நபர்களின் பங்களிப்பு உள்ளது. குறிப்பாக, தேசிய தகவல் மையத்தைச் சேர்ந்த கோபிநாத், சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழக இணையப் பொறியாளர் சிவாஜி, மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் ஒளிப்பதிவுக் குழுவைச் சேர்ந்த சம்பத், ஊர்க்காவல் படையைச் சேர்ந்த சுகுமார், பார்த்திபன், மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழக கணினி பகுப்பாய்வாளர்கள் ராஜலட்சுமி, சண்முகம், இணையப் பொறியாளர் மன்மோகன் உள்ளிட்டோரின் பணிகள் இன்றியமையாதவை என்றார் அவர்.

NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has ordered a ban on the sale of biscuits in his ministry and in the departmental meetings and also asked the department to provide healthy food such as roasted channa, almonds, dates and walnuts.

In an order released on Friday, the Ministry said, "The Health and Family Welfare Minister has desired that healthy snacks only to be served in official meeting and biscuits are to be avoided."

The order said, "Henceforth, therefore, biscuits shall not be dispensed through the departmental canteen and healthy snacks like lahiya channa, khajoor (dates), bhuna channa (roasted channa), badam (almond) and akhrot (walnuts) will be served in the official meetings in the department."

The ministry also reiterated its earlier order of not using the plastic water bottles.

COIMBATORE: The University Grants Commission has asked colleges and universities to create a separate page on their website for lodging of complaints related to caste discrimination.

Apart from this, a complaints register must be placed, in Registrar’s office in the case of universities and principal’s office in the case of colleges, for affected students to register their petitions.

UGC also asked institutions to take prompt action on erring officials in case of such complaints. In a letter written to Vice Chancellors of universities across the country, UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain has advised institutions to be more sensitive in dealing with cases of caste discrimination.

“The move will encourage victims to come forward and lodge complaints,” says Bharathair University SC/ST Teachers’ and Staff Welfare Association president M Ilanchelian. “However, officials should ensure the measures are implemented effectively.”

CHENNAI: Agitations are becoming a fulltime profession in Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court observed on Friday, wondering how the State’s economy will prosper if every development project is opposed.

The oral observation was made by Justice Anand Venkatesh while hearing a plea filed by AMMK founder TTV Dhinakaran, seeking direction to police to allow him to protest in Cuddalore against extraction of hydrocarbons. The plea has been posted to July 1.

“Protests and demonstrations are becoming a full-time profession now a days in Tamil Nadu,” he said, adding opposition to any and every development project that comes to the State would have the direct effect of losing employment to other states. He also wondered what was the need for organising protests when the state government had already said “no” to such projects. People should not protest against the project but against the location chosen for it, the Judge said while refusing to accept the contention of the petitioner that Tamil Nadu would turn into a desert if the hydrocarbon project was allowed.

Justice Venkatesh in his oral observations also said most of the people who participate in such protests do so only because parties organise it.


The participants fail to go into the pros and cons of such projects. The younger generation in the State should be encouraged to seek appropriate profession or job and not to join such protests and movements, the judge observed.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit has cleared the names of K. Shanmugam, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), and J.K. Tripathy, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Uniform Services Recruitment Board, for appointment as Chief Secretary (CS) and Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu respectively.

Confirming this, a senior official said that orders on the appointments will be issued on Saturday.

The officers belong to the 1985 batch. Mr. Shanmugam is from IAS and Mr. Tripathy from the IPS. They will take charge on Sunday following the retirement of Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan from service and the term of T.K. Rajendran as DGP coming to an end.

Mr. Shanmugam is expected to hold the post for a year, as he will be reaching the age of superannuation in July next year.

Mr Tripathy, who was also born in 1960, will, however, remain as DGP till June 2021, as the post carries the fixed tenure of two years.

For the post of Chief Secretary, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami preferred Mr. Shanmugam to others, including R. Rajagopal and Rajeev Ranjan, who are his seniors. As far as the DGP is concerned, Mr. Tripathy is the seniormost among those considered by the selection committee, which included representatives of the Union Public Services Commission, State and Central governments, apart from the Chief Minister.

Mr. Shanmugam, who is holding the post of Finance Secretary since May 2010, was empanelled by the Centre for the post of Secretary or Secretary-equivalent in the Union government.

Ramalingam, Commissioner of Art & Culture, who functioned as a Secretary to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for years. Mr. Shanmugam was among those who attended the function. Earlier in the day, Mr. Tripathy met Ms. Vaidyanathan and the incoming Chief Secretary.

Mr. Shanmugam, who is holding the post of Finance Secretary since May 2010, was empanelled by the Centre for the post of Secretary or Secretary-equivalent in the Union government. He is among the few IAS officers to be retained in the same post despite a change in regime in the State.

Ola, Uber told to stop ride-share

Transport Department says service violates law

The Transport Department has directed taxi aggregators Ola and Uber to stop the ride-sharing or car-pooling services they offer in Bengaluru on the grounds that they violate the terms and conditions of Karnataka On-demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules, 2016.

The decision has left many commuters who depend on this low-cost means of transport worried.

Transport Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri told The Hindu that if the two aggregators continue to violate the rules, action will be taken against them. The directions were given to Ola and Uber at a meeting held by the Transport Department with various taxi operators in the city on Friday.

“Conventional taxi operators in the city like KSTDC, Meru and others had raised objections against ride-share saying that the service eats into their business and is against rules. They claimed that Ola and Uber were offering ride-share not only within the city limits but even to the Kempegowda International Airport,” said Mr. Ikkeri.

He pointed out that while BMTC can only operate city buses under stage carriage permits in Bengaluru, apps running ride-share services have parallel operations picking and dropping passengers en route.

Incidentally, drivers on Ola and Uber have also been demanding that the authorities crack down on ride-share as it is not economically viable for them.

The Transport Department also cited safety issues for their decision. “Ola and Uber received licences from the department only to operate taxi services. By offering ride-share on their mobile app, they are nothing but violating the permit norms,” said Mr. Ikkeri.

Ola and Uber have, in the past, maintained that ride-share services help decongest the city and reduce fuel consumption as well as carbon emissions.

The aggregators did not offer any comment on this development when contacted by The Hindu .

Conventional taxi operators in the city had raised objections against ride-share saying that it eats into their business and is against the rules.

Spotting you, he opens his mouth wide to reveal… tiny, intricate teeth. Then he turns his head and munches on some leaves.

Such encounters may have been common in prehistory. Research suggests vegetarianism evolved at least three separate times in ancient crocs — a conclusion reached after scientists studied the unusual teeth sported by many species, including the Simosuchus described above.

Crocodiles and their relatives have many things in common, including meat-heavy diets, a penchant for swimming and their teeth.

But the Mesozoic was a different story. About 250,000 years ago, scores of crocodyliform species could be found on land and some in seas and rivers. A particular species might eat only plants, only animals, or both. To support these varied diets, many had “unique, interesting teeth,” said Keegan Melstrom, a student at the University of Utah and lead author of the new study.

Melstrom analysed 146 teeth from 16 extinct crocodyliform species. Half of the ancient species seemed to have been on the plant-eating end of the spectrum. Several of them were from distinct lineages. This suggests that vegetarianism was not an anomaly in crocodyliform history, but evolved at least three times. In terms of popularity, Mallippoo idlis are next only to the famous Madurai Malli flowers. While a few restaurant chains have popularised the idli among the city residents and others, there are hundreds of pavement shops selling hot idlis, vadas and dosas where the vendors are mostly women.

These shops in the unorganized sector are crowdpullers too as the idlis are cheap and come with at least two varieties of chutney and sambar. But many commuters complain that these roadside shops maintain poor hygiene. There are no proper hand wash facilities and the food is exposed to dust.

“They lack awareness on Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines of cleanliness and hygiene. So, we have studied their working model and prepared a project proposal to help them out,” said K P Murugan, president of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia).

The industry body has now come up with a push cart model that is clean and hygienic and has aesthetic appeal. It is solar-powered, has water tank on top and tap to wash hands, a tank below to collect water, covered bins to collect used banana leaves or paper and so on. The collected waste water can be let into a drain, thereby keeping the roads and platforms clean. The setup would cost ₹2 lakh.

Roadside vendors would have to spend only ₹10,000 (5% of the project cost) and would get a subsidy of ₹50,000 (25%) from the District Industries Centre and the remaining ₹1.4 lakh will be arranged under Mudra scheme.

Former AMMK propaganda secretary Thanga Tamilselvan, who joined the DMK on Friday, said the party had a strong leadership and its president M K Stalin was a hard-working leader capable of taking Tamil Nadu forward.

“The way he fought the legal battle, to secure a place on Marina for his father's (M Karunanidhi) burial, showed his resolve,” Thanga Tamilselvan told reporters, at the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam.

“Even after his party lost the R K Nagar bypoll, the way Stalin handled the situation and took the party forward showed that he is a true leader. The results of the recent Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu indicate the faith of the people in him,” Tamilselvan said.

Earlier, accompanied by a core group of supporters, Thanga Tamilselvan met Stalin and joined the party. He is likely to be made in charge of the party’s Theni district unit soon.

“Position is not something that one asks and gets. It should be given based on an individual’s contribution to the party. If I do that, am sure the party will recognize my work with due postings,” he said, parrying further questions on the subject. He is expected to organize a large public meeting in Theni soon to enable large number of his supporters to join DMK in the presence of Stalin.

The development came just two days after he denied that he was joining either AIADMK or DMK. “AIADMK lacks single leadership and the party is unable to take any decision. Hence, I did not want to join that party,” Tamilselvan explained. “Now that he has joined the DMK, he (Thanga Tamilselvan) will soon become a zero,” said senior minister D Jayakumar.

Meanwhile, AIADMK social media groups were abuzz on Friday with a message blaming the party coordinator and deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam for forcing Thanga Tamilselvan to join DMK. “People pursuing family interests are the reason behind not letting Thanga Tamilselvan to return to the party. This will now hasten the party’s fall,” said the message, which went viral.

State govt helps orphaned girl continue her education

The state government has helped an 18-yearold orphan continue her college education by getting readmission in a government college in Coimbatore. S Sivaranjani, who lost her mother Marammal eight years ago, discontinued her first year bachelor’s degree course in Government Arts and Science College in Coimbatore after her father Saminathan died last year.

Saminathan and Marammal of Kalidimbam near Sathyamangalam also have a 14-year-old son, Hari Prasath.

After completing Class XII in 2018, Sivaranjani got admission in the Government Arts and Science College in Coimbatore. Within a few months of her joining the college, Saminathan fell ill. “No one was there at my house to take care of my father. So, I had to discontinue my education to care of him,” Sivaranjani told TOI.

Tragically, Saminathan too died of cardiac arrest in November 2018. Both Sivaranjani and her brother became orphans. Sivaranjani started to work under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee scheme in the same village to make ends meet. “I have to earn for our livelihood and for my brother’s studies,” she said.

Sivaranjani’s agony didn’t end with her father’s death. Her brother too Hari Prasath died of undiagnosed fever in February this year. “I felt lonely after my brother’s death,” she said, adding that she started leading her life on her own.

Meanwhile, officials from the scheduled tribe department learned about Sivaranjani’s plight and came forward to support her. They took her case to the higher education department through the Erode district administration.

With the support of the higher education department, Sivaranjani got readmission in Government Arts and Science College in Coimbatore this academic year. She also got admission in the SC&ST welfare department’s hostel in Coimbatore.

“After losing my parents and brother, I am now completely dependent on my education,” she said, adding that she wished to become a government official to help the needy like her.

Officials from SC&ST welfare department said the state government will take care of her higher education expenses.

20,000 clinical establishments face closure over registration

Nearly 20,000 clinical establishments, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, laboratories and scan centres, are facing closure as they have failed to apply for registration with the state health department under the Tamil Nadu Clinical Establishments Act, 2018, before May 31, the directorate of medical services has said.

So far, the directorate has received about 28,000 applications from various establishments, against the expected 50,000.

In March 2018, the state framed legislation making it mandatory for all clinical establishments — public or private — to register with the government.

“As of now, these establishments are illegal. Currently, most big hospitals and nursing homes have applied but many small clinics, consultation rooms and blood banks are yet to apply,” said director of medical services Dr Mohanan.

The deadline for registration ended on March 31. As per the act, from June 31, the DMS can initiate action or close down those establishments which have not applied for registration. “We are seeking permission from the state to extend the deadline with a fine,” he said.

Officials are inspecting hospitals and establishments to ensure they fulfil infrastructure and human resource requirements specified in the act. So far, nearly 150 establishments in the city have been inspected and joint directors are visiting hospitals in the districts. If the hospitals qualify, they will be given licence for five years.

The new rules, health department officials say, were brought in to standardize establishments under the allopathic or Indian medicine stream. Tamil Nadu lab associations and unani practitioners moved the court as they found the specifications in the act “too stringent”. It specifies floor space requirement, waiting area, safe drinking water supply and toilets. Lab associations, for instance, said single room labs in rural areas in the state may not fulfill the requirement. “The courts have made registration mandatory,” a senior official said.

Doctors’ associations too approached the state government to relax rules for consultation rooms, where there are no injections or instruments used.

“They have made it mandatory for such clinics to have provisions for disposal of biomedical waste when they generate none. We have approached the government seeking exemption,” said Dr K Senthil, Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association.

Most of these doctors meet patients for reviews, where they see test reports and alter prescriptions, he said.

Major LPG manufacturers move court against July 1 strike call of tanker owners

Major producers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, have approached the Madras high court to stall the strike call issued by LPG tanker owners.

They claimed that if the strike was allowed, the resulting shortage of cylinders would hit crores of users.

They wanted the court to direct the state commissioner of civil supplies and consumer protection department and the DGP to invoke powers under the Essential Commodities Act to take immediate steps for ensuring uninterrupted and continuous supply of LPG products in the state.

As an interim measure, they wanted the court to direct the DGP to provide adequate police protection at the loading/ unloading locations of cyclinders and to restrain the president and secretary of the Southern Region Bulk LPG Transport Owners’ Associations in Namakkal from going ahead with the strike from July 1.

The issue pertains to state-wise tenders floated in respect of the six southern states, including Puducherry, for the first time for hiring LPG tankers. Not happy with the stipulations, the transport owners associations, at their general body meeting on June 20, resolved to go on strike from July 1.

PV Rajamannar Salai in KK Nagar has at least 14 shops encroaching upon its 80ft wide carriageway, reducing it to just half its width. The road is a vital link for residents of KK Nagar and Ashok Nagar to areas along Arcot Road, and groans under choking traffic during peak hours.

“Instead of going all the way to Vadapalani signal and inching through the traffic on Arcot Road, several people enter Rajamannar Salai from Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (to reach Virugambakkam, Saligramam, Valasaravakkam and surroundings). Corporation is sitting on its plan to evict these people instead of removing the encroachments,” said V Gopalakrishnan, a civic activist from K K Nagar.

Gopalakrishnan added that there were more than eight structures encroaching upon MGR Canal along Ramaswamy Salai, the road parallel to Rajamannar Salai. “These structures, which include a few houses, let out sewage into the canal but no action has been taken by the corporation despite complaints,” he said.

“Rajamannar Salai’s original width was more than 100ft. It is clearly visible how much space the shops have taken. If the corporation clears encroachments, traffic flow can become better,” said another resident of the area.

In 2016, the city corporation wrote to the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, urging it to allot alternate shop floors to the encroaching vendors so the civic body can pull down the structures.

TOI accessed the letters, addressed to the managing director, TNSCB, seeking to relocate the encroachments (then 12 commercial establishments) along Rajamannar Salai and the adjacent Ramaswamy Salai (six commercial and residential structures).

While civic body officials from ward 131 tried to dismiss it saying they were awaiting allocation orders from TNSCB, a senior TNSCB official said based on the corporation’s request, eligible encroachers had been identified for alternate settlement.

“We identified14 encroaching shops on Rajamannar Salai. We have written at least three letters to the corporation saying that10 of the14 vendors are eligible for resettlement, and that allotment orders are ready. The civic body could have gone ahead with the eviction process,” said a TNSCB official. Officials from the zone later said there was a recent discussion on the issue and that the eviction process will be started. “We will register biometrics to identify the vendors and hand over allotment orders,” said an official.

“Take another helping of rice if you like but there is no drinking water,” the health care worker screamed while serving lunch to patients in a ward of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

The city’s premier hospital does not provide drinking water to its patients or those accompanying them. “Patients have been asked to take water from a tank outside the hospital or buy Rs 10 bottles of water from Amma Unuvagam,” said Sankaran S, a daily wage worker, whose wife has been admitted to the women’s ward.

Health workers said the hospital is water-starved. “We don’t have it flowing in the toilets all through the day. Sometimes, when the taps run dry, we fill water in large drums so patients can flush. It’s not just patients and their family, staff working here do not have drinking water. Most of us bring water bottles from home,” said a member of the staff.

The attendants, who wait at the lounge that has no airconditioning, fan or windows, say summer has never been cruel. “We came here as we cannot afford treatment at a private hospital. While treatment here is free, we have been spending lots of money for food and water,” said R Rajender, whose relative is being treated. The water that comes in pipes doesn’t taste like drinking water and it smells bad.

On an average, a family of two spends at least ₹200 on drinking water daily. “In addition, we spend about ₹300 on food,” said Mary Arulkumar whose brother is admitted to the cardiology block.

Canteen managers at the hospital said water bottles have sold more than the proverbial hot cake in the past three months. But senior hospital administrators said the hospital has an RO plant where drinking water is available all the time.

“But many people complain that they don’t like the smell and taste of this water. They prefer to buy bottles. We also have about five tanks of 5,000 litre capacity,” said dean Dr R Jayanthi. “They buy bottle because they want to not because water isn’t available,” she said.

இளைஞர்கள் போதை விருந்துக்கு அடிமையாகி, இளம் பெண்களை பாதிப்புக்குள்ளாக்கும் அவல நிலை பொள்ளாச்சியில் அண்மையில் அரங்கேறியதைக் கண்டு வருந்தாத உள்ளங்கள் எந்த இல்லங்களிலும் இல்லை என்றே கூறலாம்.

போதையின் விளைவை 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ஒரு கல்லூரி முதல்வர் தன் மாணவர்களிடம் சொன்ன குட்டிக் கதை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
