After bomb threat, two F-16s escort Mumbai-S’pore flight

A Singapore Airlines flight from Mumbai with 263 passengers on board received a bomb threat on Tuesday. Responding to the threat call, Singapore Air Force sent two F-16s to escort the aircraft once it entered its airspace. It emerged later that it was a hoax call. Investigations into the incident are on.

“Singapore Airlines confirms there was a bomb threat concerning SQ423 operating from Mumbai to Singapore. The aircraft arrived in Singapore on March 26, at 0800hrs (local time),’’ said a Singapore Airlines spokesperson, adding that the airline was assisting the authorities with their probe.

In a Facebook post, the Republic of Singapore Air Force said two F16C/Ds escorted the SIA aeroplane till it landed safely at Changi airport. A woman and a child on board have been held back for questioning by the local police. According to sources, the airline received the threat call after the plane took off from Mumbai at 11.35pm (local time) on Monday. The caller claimed that there was a bomb on the plane. The plane, a Boeing 777-300ER, had departed Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at 11.36pm local time, according to website FlightAware. It arrived in Singapore 31minutes behind schedule, the site added.
