Luxury car runs over two foreign nationals in downtown Kolkata
Deceased were from Bangladesh; accused driver arrested

Two foreign nationals were killed and one person was injured when a speeding luxury car hit them in downtown on Saturday. The luxury car hit the three victims after being rammed by another car, said the police.

The luxury car also damaged a traffic signal outpost.

The incident happened around 1.50 a.m. near the crossing of the Shakespeare Sarani and Loudon Street, said a Kolkata Police official.

One injured

The car hit three pedestrians, including two Bangladeshis: Kazi Mohammed Mainul Alam (36) and Farhana Islam Tania (30).

Kazi and Farhana were declared brought dead by the State-run SSKM Hospital while the injured person is undergoing treatment, said the police.

The occupants of the car that hit the victims also received minor injuries.

The person driving the other car fled after the mishap but was later arrested, an official said. “Both the vehicles have been impounded. We are checking CCTV footage,” he said.

The arrested accused is the son of the owner of a city-based restaurant chain, he added.

Other incidents

Eight persons were injured in two other road accidents on Saturday in different parts of the city, which is being lashed by heavy monsoon rain.

A motorcyclist and a person riding pillion were injured when the two-wheeler skidded on Eastern Metropolitan bypass near Captain Fishery at around 1.40 a.m., said the police.

Six occupants of a four-wheeler were injured when the vehicle’s driver lost control while crossing the Maa flyover and it fell on its side around 5.45 a.m.
