This may be the best time to plan a Christmas or New Year holiday in Southeast Asia or the Middle East as discounted fare offers by airlines have caused a general dip in ticket rates for travel in December.
The offers come in handy for those planning trips three to four months in advance. Kuwait Airways, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet have come out with a low fare sale and this has cut fares on weekends too. Airfares are in the range of ₹19,000 to ₹27,000 for Dubai, Doha and Muscat which is after a reduction of ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 for travel during the Christmas week. On the Chennai-Singapore route, the fare is in the range of ₹17,000 to ₹24,000 which is lower by ₹2,000 to ₹3,000.
Travel and tour operators said this would put a cap on the increasing fares when more people try to book for travel during the holiday period. Basheer Ahmed of Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) said, “The low fares will be of help to people who are planning to travel in October, November and December as they will get a better deal. This is also a move from the airlines to get maximum bookings early on for flights for weekends and also for Christmas and New Year season.”
He said fares have not dipped considerably in spite of the offers. “Earlier, there used to be a scramble for seats soon after fares were announced which used to cause a major decrease.”
The ₹1,299 offer from SpiceJet and ₹3,999 from IndiGo on domestic routes will also help travellers looking for international holidays as they will be able to fly the domestic leg to gateaway airports like Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad at cheaper rates.
