A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly making a hoax bomb call to IGI Airport a week before Independence Day, the police said on Saturday.
He allegedly told that police that he wanted to stop his wife from leaving the country for work, they said.
DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said Nasrudeen from Bihar’s Sitamarhi and a resident of Chennai was arrested from Bawana Industrial area. On August 8, at 9 p.m., a call was received at Delhi International Airport Limited’s call centre in Gurugram. The caller said he was speaking from Chennai and that one Zabina, who has reached the Delhi airport, could cause an explosion in a Dubai or Saudi Arabia-bound flight. “The call was forwarded to airport security officials, police stations, IGI Airport and other agencies, including the Special Cell. The Airport Operations Control Centre [AOCC] contacted the caller who confirmed that Zabina, who has reached Delhi, was planning to leave for abroad. He also shared her contact number,” Mr. Yadav said.
The police then called the woman who confirmed that she was in Delhi and was planning to leave the country. However, after further questioning, it was found out that the bomb threat was a hoax, the police said.
Tracing the caller
A case was registered at Gurugram’s Udyog Vihar police station and teams started tracing the caller. On Independence Day, the police claimed to have received a tip-off that the caller, Nasrudeen, was in Bawana. The mobile phone along with the SIM, used in making the call, was recovered from him, they said.
During interrogation, Nasrudeen said he moved to Chennai in 2008 and started stitching bags for a living. He fell in love with one of his employees, Zabina, a mother of two who had separated from her husband.
“Nasrudeen married Zabina in 2017 but the two fought frequently over financial issues. In July this year, Nasrudeen left for Bihar when Zabina planned to go abroad to earn money,” Mr. Yadav said.
The police said Nasrudeen was on his way back to Chennai on August 8 when he got a call from Zabina who told him that she was leaving for Delhi from where she would depart to a Gulf country for work. He tried to stop her but she didn’t agree. “When Nasrudeen reached Chennai, he went to Zabina’s maternal house and was informed that she had left for Delhi. He then planned to make the hoax call to stop her. He googled IGIA’s number,” the officer added.
