Due to the Covid-19 crisis, Anna University has decided to grant provisional affiliation to engineering colleges for the next academic year based on All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) approval. However, the university also said it would send inspection committees to verify the data provided by colleges after the start of academic activities.

Usually, Anna University would send inspection teams to all colleges to check infrastructure facilities like labs and classrooms, faculty-students ratio, cadre ratio in departments. This year, the university also verified PhD degree certificates.

“Affiliated colleges of Anna University are requested to submit an attested copy of the AICTE approval to the university immediately after it is issued,” L Karunamoorthy, registrar of the university, said in a circular issued on Wednesday. He also informed the colleges about extension of deadline to June 30 by AICTE for granting affiliation.

Before the closure of educational institutions, the inspections were conducted in 200 out of 536 colleges in the state. The university also roped in 500 faculty members from IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore and NIT Trichy.

“The first condition is to get approval from AICTE and we would also scrutinize the data submitted by colleges before giving them affiliation.

“If needed, the university would conduct inspection through Skype or other platforms,” said M K Surappa, vice-chancellor of Anna University.

Due to the Covid-19 crisis, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) granted extension of approval for institutions based on self-disclosure if there was no change in their applications from last year’s approval.

It further said it would use online platforms for colleges that are seeking permission to start new courses or new colleges.
