Madras univ syndicate selects four-member panel to run varsity

The syndicate of University of Madras, which met on Friday for the first time after the lockdown began, constituted a four-member convener committee to run the varsity after vicechancellor P Duraisamy completes his tenure on May 26.

Higher education secretary Apoorva, Dote (Directorate of Technical Education) commissioner K Vivekanandan, MOP Vaishnav College for Women principal Lalitha Balakrishnan and head of the university’s department of Indian history S S Sundaram have been selected as members of the committee.

The committee will run the university until the new vice-chancellor takes charge. It may take crucial decisions such as conducting exams and reopening of colleges post the Covid-19 crisis.

The vice-chancellor search panel, headed by Jawaharlal Nehru University VC M Jagadesh Kumar, has called for applications for the post from eminent academicians. They should submit applications before June 4. It may take another two to three weeks from the date for them to process applications and appoint a new vice-chancellor.
