Madurai:  15.05.2020

After receiving approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Madurai Medical College attached to Government Rajaji Hospital and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital in south Tamil Nadu are preparing to carry out clinical trials for convalescent plasma therapy to treat Covid-19 patients.

The convalescent plasma therapy involves using antibodies from the blood of a recovered Covid-19 patient to treat critically-ill Covid-19 patients.

While hospital authorities are tight-lipped about how and by when the trials will be conducted, suitable plasma donors among those who have made full recovery are being identified. However, such donors are hard to come by as they must fulfil certain criteria and must not have been asymptomatic during the Covid-19 infection.

“Following ICMR’s approval, we have started collection of plasma from suitable donors. It is still only the initial stage and trials on patients are yet to begin. We are not allowed to disclose information about the trials or the donors,” said GRH Dean Dr J Sangumani.
