Stops movie for a few minutes, distributes nilavembu kudineer

A day after he fined a theatre for failing to check mosquito breeding, a Deputy Collector took the audience watching Mersal by surprise as he walked into the cinema hall along with a group of government staff to distribute nilavembu kudineer and spoke to them about ways to keep mosquitoes at bay.

It was on Wednesday that S. Jayaprakash, Deputy Collector and District Backward Classes Welfare Officer, imposed a fine of ₹5,000 each on two adjoining theatres in Vaniyambadi town – Vijay Theatre and Shivaji Theatre – for failing to check mosquito breeding sources.

On Thursday, he returned to Vijay Theatre to ensure that they removed the breeding sources. At about 11.30 a.m., a few minutes after the screening of actor Vijay-starrer Mersal had commenced, the official walked into the cinema hall to meet the audience after stopping the screening for a few minutes.

“We went to check if they had cleared the sources. We also went inside the cinema hall, and distributed nilavembu kudineer to about 70 persons. We wanted to create awareness among the audience, and the response was good. They did not mind that the screening was stopped for a few minutes. They were happy to listen to us, and did not think that it was unnecessary when they had come to a theatre for entertainment,” Mr. Jayaprakash said. As the audience sipped into cups of nilavembu kudineer, the official spoke to them about how the dengue-spreading mosquito breeds in clean water.

Mr. Jayaprakash called for a change in the mindset among people to not only check their houses but also ensure that their surroundings and public places were clean and free from water stagnation and breeding sources.

Chennai: “Be prepared. Will tell everything on November 7 (birthday)”, Tamil film icon Kamal Hassan declared on Thursday hinting at a big announcement on his political plunge and how he plans to shape his future in politics when he turns 63.

Kamal, who has made known his intention to join politics to “change the existing system”, also announced that he will establish a communication channel among his fans, people and him on his birthday on November 7. Sources said Kamal’s team is mulling launching a mobile application that would serve as a platform for interaction and planning strategies in the future.

“I understand that there is an army of youngsters waiting out there. The youth force should be coordinated and I am of the belief that I am duty bound to unite them. So, on November 7, I will announce a method by which I can communicate with them”, Kamal wrote in his weekly column in a Tamil weekly.

The film star has been quite active on social media platforms for the past one year and registering his opinion on most issues that concern the people of Tamil Nadu.

The actor’s activism in appealing to the people to send in proof of corruption to departments concerned saw him at the receiving end of the wrath of the ruling AIADMK, which went all out to target him and take potshots at his political ambitions.

As speculation mounted on Kamal launching his political party on his birthday, he took to Twitter to “clarify” saying he will announce his political entry before the public and not on November 7 due to “media pressure.” He also said he has been meeting his fans on his birthday every year.

Suggesting that pleading with the government of the day would not work anymore, Kamal said time has come for performing a “surgery” but warned that any kind of “armed revolution” will bear no fruit since it involved more loss of humans.

He also said the new communication channel will be aimed at training people and organising workshops that will make future plans. “My aim is not to just convene an assembly of supporters but a large council of leaders. Agenda of such an initiative will not be to just hold talks but to work out plans,” the film star said.

Puducherry: A day after sharing the sad state of affairs at government general hospital in Karaikal, Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi warned the government doctors and staff to abstain from practising in other institutions and to get back to the original place of posting immediately to receive the salary for the month of November.

Government doctors, medical staff in Karaikal working in service placement in other institutions will revert to government hospitals and primary health centre in Karaikal.

“Doctors or any other staff drawing a salary from the government hospital, but not working in the hospital will not be receiving the salary till they resume duty at the government hospital”, the Lt Governor said. The government hospital cannot go on like this. People of Karakal are suffering.

Hence all staff of the hospital posted anywhere must report back to duty and no
diversion is allowed, she added. The Lt Governor directed the Medical superintendent of Karaikal government general hospital to follow the orders while drawing and disbursing the salary for the month of November.

The vacant post of medical staffs will be filled soon and adequate supply of medicine should be ensured. An epidemic unit will be created by Jipmer in Karaikal to manage the outbreak of epidemics.

குறைந்த கட்டணத்தில் சேவை செய்து மக்களை கவர்ந்த மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி.

அரசு மருத்துவமனையைத் தவிர மற்ற தனியார் மருத்துவமனைகளில் ஏழைகள் செல்ல முடியாத அளவுக்கு மருத்துவக் கட்டணம் உயர்ந்து விட்ட தற்போதைய நிலையில், தாம்பரத்தில் ஏழை மக்களுக்கு குறைந்த கட்டணத்தில் மருத்துவம் பார்த்து வருகிறார் மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி.

கடந்த, 40 வருடங்களாக ஏழை மக்கள் தெய்வமாக வணங்கி வரும் நிலையில் மருத்துவ சேவை செய்து வருகிறார், தாம்பரத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மருத்துவர், சேஷகிரி (79). கர்நாடக மாநிலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி, 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு தாம்பரத்தில் குடியேறினார். தாம்பரம் நெஞ்சக நோய் அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் பணியாற்றி ஓய்வுபெற்றவர், தாம்பரம் காந்தி சாலையில் தன்னுடைய வீட்டில், 40 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வெறும் இரண்டு ரூபாய்க்கு மருத்துவம் செய்தார். இரண்டு ரூபா மருத்துவர் என்று மக்களால் அன்போடு அவர் அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.

தற்போது பெரிய நகரமாக வளர்ந்து விட்ட தாம்பரத்தில், 40 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு குடிசைகள், ஏழை மக்கள் நிறைந்த ரங்கநாதபுரம், கைலாசபுரம், கடப்பேரி, மாந்தோப்பு ஆகிய பகுதிகளில், சாலையோர வியாபாரிகள், ஏழை கூலி தொழிலாளிகள் வசித்து வந்துள்ளனர். அந்த நேரத்தில் உடல் நலம் இல்லாமல் தன் கிளினிக்குக்கு வரும் ஏழை தொழிலாளிகள் அனைவருக்கும், இலவசமாகவே மருத்துவம் பார்க்கத் தொடங்கினார். கட்ட ணம் கொடுக்க விரும்பும் நோயாளிகளிடம் 2 ரூபாய் மட்டும் கட்டணம் வாங்கத் தொடங்கினார்.

அப்போது தாம்பரத்தில் மருத்துவர்களும் குறைவு, மருத்துவமனைகளும் குறைவு. எனவே மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரியை சந்தித்து மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை பெற கூட்டம் குவிந்திருக்கும். கூட்டம் குவிந்தாலும் அவர் வசூலிக்கும் கட்டணம் கூடவில்லை. மருத்துவமனை தொடங்கிய சில ஆண்டுகளிலேயே சொத்துகளை வாங்கிக் குவிக்கும் மருத்துவர்கள் இருக்கும் இக்காலத்தில், தன் குடும்பத் தேவைக்காக தன்னுடைய தோட்டம், வீட்டின் ஒரு பகுதியை விற்றவர் மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி.

எதிர்ப்புகள் - இடையூறுகள்

மருத்துவ சேவையை காசாக்கும் முனைப்பில் உள்ள பிற மருத்துவர்களின் எதிர்ப்பு களையும், இடையூறுகளையும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் அவர் தனது சேவையைத் தொடர்ந்தார். கால ஓட்டத்தில் விலைவாசி உயர்ந்தபோதும், இவருடைய இரண்டு ரூபாய் கட்டணம், ஐந்து ரூபாய், பத்து ரூபாய் என மனிதாபிமானத்தோடு காலத்தைக் கடந்து, கடந்த இரண்டு வருட காலமாய் இருபது ரூபாய் என நிலை கொண்டுள்ளது. அதுவும், 10 ரூபாய், 20 ரூபாய் நோட்டுகளாக கொடுத்தால்தான் வாங்குவார். மருந்துகளும், 10 ரூபாய், 12 ரூபாய் என மிகக்குறைந்த விலைதான்.

வியாதியுடன் ஏழ்மை நிலையில், கிழிந்த ஆடைகளில் பணம் முடிந்துகொண்டு வருகிற நோயாளிகளுக்கு சிகிச்சையும், ஊசி, மருந்துகளும் இலவசம். தேவையில்லாமல் மருந்துகளை பரிந்துரைக்க மாட்டார்.

பலதரப்பு மக்களும் வசதியுடையவர்களும் கூட இவரை நாடி வருகின்றனர். இவருடைய சேவையும், அன்பும், அரவணைப்பும் எவ்வித விளம்பரமும், பிரச்சாரமும் இன்றி இன்றும் தொடர்கிறது. நெஞ்சக நோய் மருத்துவமனையில் பணியாற்றியதால் தாம்பரத்தில் சளி மற்றும் டி.பி. நோய்களால் அவரிடம் செல்லும் நோயாளிகளுக்கு உரிய நேரத்தில் சரியான சிகிச்சை அளித்து காப்பாற்றியுள்ளார். குறைந்த செலவில் ரத்தப் பரிசோதனை மையம் நடத்தி, மற்ற பரிசோதனை மையங்களை திகைக்கச் செய்தவர். தற்போது சரிவர ஆட்கள் கிடைக்காததால் ரத்தப் பரிசோதனை மையத்தை மூடி விட்டார்.

மருத்துவர்களுக்கு முன்னோடி

சாதாரண தலைவலி என்றாலே இருக்கின்ற எல்லா பரிசோதனைகளையும் செய்யச் சொல்கிற மருத்துவர்கள் மத்தியில், அந்த பரிசோதனைகளை பெரும்பாலும் தவிர்த்து, அனுபவ ரீதியாக என்ன நோய் என்பதை அறிந்து மருந்து கொடுப்பதில் மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி மற்ற மருத்துவர்களுக்கு முன்னோடி என் கிறார்கள், அவரால் பயன் பெற்றவர்கள்.

விளம்பரத்தை விரும்பாதவர்

இதுகுறித்து தாம்பரத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சமூக ஆர்வலரும், முன்னாள் கவுன்சிலருமான, செல்வகுமார் கூறியதாவது: ‘தன்னுடைய இருப்பு என்பதே மக்களுக்கான மருத்துவ சேவைக்காகவே’ என்ற உறுதியை மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி என்றுமே தளர்த்தியதில்லை. கடந்த 40 ஆண்டுகளில் ஒருநாள் கூட அவர் கிளினிக்குக்கு வராமல் இருந்ததில்லை. பலமுறை ஊடகங்கள் அவரின் சேவையை செய்தியாக்க முனைந்தபோது விளம்பரங்கள் எதுவும் தேவையில்லை என்பார். இரண்டு நாள் மருந்து, மாத்திரை சாப்பிட்டால் போதும்; உடம்பு சரியாகிவிடும். தேவைப்பட்டால் மட்டுமே வெளியே ஊசி, மருந்து வாங்கி வரச் சொல்வார்.

நலமோடு வாழ வேண்டும்

மாதம் ஒருமுறை தாம்பரம் சுற்றுப்பகுதிகளில் உள்ள குவாரி, கிரஷர் பகுதிகளுக்குச் சென்று, அங்கு பணிபுரியும் கூலி தொழிலாளர்களுக்கும், அவர்களின் குடும்பத்தாருக்கும் சிகிச்சை அளிப்பார். கடவுளை நேரில் பார்த்ததில்லை. மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரியின் ரூபத்தில்தான் பார்க்கிறோம். இன்னும் பல ஆண்டுகள் அவர் நலமோடு வாழ வேண்டும் என தெய்வத்தை தினம் தினம் வேண்டுகிறோம்.

என்னைப் போலவே தாம்பரத்தின் மக்கள் அனைவரும் அவர் நீண்ட ஆயுளுடன் பல ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்து தங்களுக்கு சேவை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டுகிறார்கள். தாம்பரம் நகரம், கம்யூனிஸ்ட் தலைவர் ஜீவா போன்ற பல தலைவர்களைக் கண்டுள்ளது. அந்த வகையில் தாம்பரத்தின் வரலாற்றில் முக்கிய இடத்தை பிடித்தவர்தான் மருத்துவர் சேஷகிரி.

இனிமேல் '2.0' மாதிரியான படம் இந்தியாவில் வருமா என எனக்குத் தெரியாது என்று '2.0' இசை வெளியீட்டு விழாவில் ரஜினிகாந்த் பேசினார்.

ஷங்கர் இயக்கத்தில் ரஜினி நடிப்பில் உருவாகியுள்ள படம் '2.0'. துபாயில் இப்படத்தின் இசை வெளியீட்டு விழா BURJ PARK-ல் பிரம்மாண்டமாக நடைபெற்றது. இதில் ஒட்டுமொத்த '2.0' படக்குழுவினரும் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

இவ்விழாவில் ரஜினிகாந்த் பேசியதாவது:

ஷங்கர் மீதான நம்பிக்கையினால் மட்டுமே '2.0'வில் நடித்தேன். வெயிலில் கஷ்டப்பட்டேன் என்று அவர் இங்கு தெரிவித்தார். வாய்ப்பு கிடைப்பது மிகவும் கடினம். கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பை சரியாக பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளவில்லை என்றால், அதைவிட முட்டாள் யாருமே இருக்க முடியாது.

ஒருவர் பெயர், புகழோடு இருக்கிறார் என்றால், அது திறமையாலும், கடின உழைப்பாலும் மட்டும் கிடையாது. அவருக்கு கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பை சரியாக பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டார் என்று அர்த்தம். ஒரு சிலருக்கு வாய்ப்புகள் தானாக வரும், அது ஆண்டவனின் அருள். அப்படி வரவில்லை என்றால் நாமே தேடி வாய்ப்புகளை உருவாக்கிக் கொள்ளவேண்டும். அந்த வாய்ப்புகள் மற்றவர்களின் வயிற்றில் அடிக்காமலும், மற்றவர்களின் வாய்ப்பைப் பறிக்காமலும், நாணயமாகவும், நேர்மையாகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

இப்போது தான் துபாய்க்கு முதல் முறையாக வந்துள்ளேன். பல நாடுகளுக்கு சென்றபோது துபாய்க்கு வருவேன், விமானத்திற்காக விமானநிலையத்திற்குள் இருந்துவிட்டு, விமானம் ஏறி போய்விடுவேன். இப்போது தான் முதல்முறையாக விமான நிலையத்தை விட்டு வெளியே வந்திருக்கிறேன். இந்திய மக்கள் பலரும் இங்கு பணியாற்றிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அதற்கு துபாய் அரசாங்கத்திற்கு இந்தியன் என்ற முறையில் நன்றி தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.

எனக்கும் இஸ்லாமிய சகோதரர்களுக்கும் ஒரு பந்தம் இருக்கிறது. 1960-70களில் பேருந்து நடத்துநராக இருக்கும்போது, பல இஸ்லாமிய சகோதரர்களுடன் தான் இருப்பேன். சென்னைக்கு நடிக்க வாய்ப்பு தேடி வந்த போது, ஒரு வீட்டில் தங்கியிருந்தேன். அந்த வீட்டின் உரிமையாளர் ஓர் இஸ்லாமியர் தான். பெயர், புகழ் கிடைத்தவுடன் போயஸ் கார்டனில் சொந்த வீடு வாங்கினேன். அதுவும் ஓர் இஸ்லாமியரிடமிருந்துதான் வாங்கினேன். ராகவேந்திரா மண்டபம் இருக்கும் இடமும் ஓர் இஸ்லாமிய சகோதரரிடமிருந்துதான் வாங்கினேன். இதுவரை பல படங்கள் நடித்திருந்தாலும், ஒரு படத்தின் பெயர் சொன்னால் அனைவருக்குமே தெரியும். அது 'பாட்ஷா'. அதில் இஸ்லாமியராக தான் நடித்திருந்தேன்.

'2.0' படத்தில் நடிக்க வாய்ப்பளித்த இயக்குநர் ஷங்கருக்கும், தயாரிப்பாளர் சுபாஷ்கரனுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன். ஷங்கர் சாருடைய கதைக் களத்திற்கு, சுபாஷ்கரன் மாதிரி ஒருவர் முதலீடு செய்யவில்லை என்றால் இப்படம் நடந்திருக்காது. இதன் மூலம் பெரிய பணம் சம்பாதிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற ஆசை சுபாஷ்கரனுக்கு கிடையாது. அவர் மிகப்பெரிய தொழிலதிபர். இந்திய மண்ணுக்கு ஒரு நல்ல படம் கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் வந்தவருக்கு ஷங்கர் சார் மாதிரி ஓர் இயக்குநர் கிடைத்தது நல்ல வாய்ப்பு.

ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மான், ரசூல் பூக்குட்டி என இப்படத்தில் அனைவருமே தங்களுக்கு கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பை அருமையாக பயன்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள். இனிமேல் இப்படியொரு படம் இந்தியாவில் வருமா என எனக்குத் தெரியாது. ஷங்கராலும் இதே போல் முடியாது.

நாம் மட்டுமே ஹாலிவுட்டை மீறிய படம் என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருந்தால், நாமே சுயதம்பட்டம் அடித்து கொண்டது போல் இருக்கும். ஆகவே, இதனை படம் பார்த்தவுடனே அனைவரும் உணர்வார்கள்.

இதில் பல ஹாலிவுட் தொழில்நுட்ப கலைஞர்கள் பணிபுரிந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் பணத்துக்காக மட்டும் இதில் பணிபுரியவில்லை. ஏற்கனவே பிஸியாக இருந்தவர்கள், இதன் கதையைக் கேட்டு தேதிகளை மாற்றிக் கொண்டு பணிபுரிந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் இக்கதை எப்படியிருக்கும் என நீங்களே யூகித்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். இதற்கு மேல் இப்படத்தைப் பற்றி சொல்ல மாட்டேன்.

CHENNAI: There are number of cyclists in the city who prefer high-end endurance cycles over the ones that are used on a daily basis. But there aren’t enough technicians and bike mechanics who have the skill and experience to repair and fix them. At least, that’s what we thought, until we met Mujeebur Rehman, the master mechanic and technician who today, is the only go-to expert for anyone with a high-end cycle in the city.

Now operating from Pro-bikers, OMR, the 40-something mechanic, fondly called as Rehman Bhai, is all about hard work, perseverance and modesty.

 A vintage cycle

In 1985, a 12-year-old Rehman moved to Chennai from Nellore along with his mother for a job. “My father passed away when I was four. So, we decided to come here to look for opportunities,” he recalls.

After reaching the city, a young Rehman began working in a tea shop. “From washing glasses to serving tea, I did it all,” he shares. “But the money wasn’t sufficient. So I joined a small cycle shop after which I landed in Balaji cycles in Saidapet. That was the turning point in my life.”

He credits almost all of his skills to ‘Bala sir’ — the owner of Balaji Cycle world.

“When I first joined his shop, he used to give me tasks that seemed impossible to finish. But, he would push me to find solutions. I used to stay up all night and think about it. The next day, I would resolve the glitch! I had the best mentor,” he explains. “Now I work under Suresh Kumar, the second gen owner. I am lucky to have had support from both ends — owner and customers.”

Servicing, assembling and dismantling are his therapy and his favourite place is the workshop. “I spend more time here than at home. You see that light and chair there? I made it!” he beams pointing to a ‘DIY’ light and chair made out of cycle frames. “I keep doing things like this,” he laughs.

The most sought-after mechanic was also the only technician from India who travelled to Taiwan for a workshop training by Shimano, last year. But the icing on the cake was assembling the envious ‘Elite 50 Scott Foil Rio Bike’ in Pro-bikers.

Mujeebur works on cycles that cost anything from Rs 2 lakh and above, which are mainly used for long rides. The self-taught mechanic has been associated with cycle enthusiasts who ride across the country and the world, including the famous LEL (London-Edinburgh-London) stretch. “They all come here before and after their ride. Their trust in me makes me work harder and sometimes it overwhelms me!” shares Mujeebur, who has also worked in servicing cycles of celebrities including Actor Ajith.

With over 1,000 followers on his Facebook profile, he’s the celebrity mechanic in the city. But, he shies away from all the attention. “My customers say that I am the best mechanic in the country. That’s why I even have people from cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai come to me,” adds Rehman.

Member of Punjab Scheduled Caste commission arrested for taking bribe of Rs 50,000

CHANDIGARH: A member of the Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission was arrested "red-handed" while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 by sleuths of the state vigilance bureau.

An official spokesperson of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau said State SC Commission member Babu Singh Panjawa was arrested on a complaint of Major Singh, a resident of Dhaula village in Barnala district.

He said Dhaula village resident Gurjant Singh had submitted a written complaint to the State SC Commission against Major Singh under the SC Act for allegedly uttering castiest remarks against him and the same was being probed by SC commission member Babu Singh.

The spokesperson said Major Singh approached the bureau and informed that Babu Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 5,00,000 to give a decision in his favour, but the matter was settled at Rs 2,50,000.

The complainant said he has paid Rs 2,50,000 to the SC Commission member on October 22 to exonerate him in the matter but was demanding Rs 50,000 more to hand over the copy of the verdict.

The spokesman informed that after verifying his information, the vigilance team laid a trap and the accused Babu Singh Panjawa was "caught red handed" at Lambi, Sri Muktsar Sahib district while accepting the bribe from the complainant in presence of two official witnesses.

He said a case under relevant provision of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at police station VB Ferozepur and further investigations was under progress.

In addition to this, another case was also been registered against him for carrying a .32 bore revolver in his vehicle as the district administration had already imposed prohibitory orders in the district.

Family loses Rs 51 lakh death compensation due to insurance norms

Chennai: R Rekha was jolted by her husband P Rajini's untimely death in 2011. But the shock she suffered six years later -- when the Madras high court cancelled the Rs 51.37 lakh accident compensation awarded by a tribunal in 2015 -- was no small blow either, even if it did not measure up to losing her husband.

Rajini was travelling pillion on his own bike on June 13, 2011 when the rider Balamurugan swerved the two-wheeler to avoid hitting a cyclist near Neyveli. He lost balance, and Rajini was thrown off the vehicle. He succumbed to head injuries the next day. When the family comprising Rekha, her son Himanish and parents-in-law moved a motor accidents claims tribunal in Neyveli seeking Rs 60 lakh compensation, they were awarded Rs 51.37 lakh in in April 2015.

But, pointing out that Rajini was riding on his own bike and that the insurancewould cover only third party risks and not the owners of vehicles, United India Insurance Company filed an appeal in the high court.

A bench of Justice R Subbiah and Justice AD Jagadish Chandira found that it was legally bound to accept the insurance company's arguments.

The insurance company submitted that under Section 147 of the Motor Vehicles Act, risk of the deceased, who is the owner of the vehicle, was not required to be covered by the company and, if at all, the claimants/respondents were entitled, it could only be to a maximum amount of Rs 1 lakh under the compulsory personal accident coverage as per the insurance policy and nothing more.

While concurring with the submissions, the judges said the personal accident cover norm was introduced 15 years ago. "In 2002, Rs 1 lakh might be sufficient to meet medical expenses for treatment of the injured owner of the vehicle to a certain extent. Now, 15 years have lapsed and the cost of medical treatment has sky-rocketed. Due to the negligence of the owner of the vehicle, if a third party suffers bodily injury or even death, such third party or his family members will get adequate compensation from the insurance company befitting to the pecuniary loss sustained by the injured or on account of the death of the deceased. On the contrary, if owner of the vehicle himself sustains bodily injury or dies in a motor accident, due to his or her own negligence, the owner of the vehicle or his or her family members will not get compensation. It is unfortunate that the owner of the vehicle, who pays premium amount for the risks that may be confronted by the third party, is not getting adequate compensation in the event of his death or bodily injury," said the judges.

"Taking note of the escalation in the cost of living, particularly the cost of medical treatment, we direct the IRDA to enhance the compulsory personal accident cover from the existing Rs 1 lakh to at least not less than Rs 15 lakh so that the amount will add some succour or solace to the victims of road accidents, who are the owners of the vehicles, and may incidentally sustain bodily injury or death," they said.

Tamil Nadu governor inaugurates Chennai-Paris flight

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit inaugurated Jet Airways' first direct service between Chennai and Paris at a function held at Chennai International airport on Saturday.

An airline official said that the flight had 50% occupancy on the first service. The 9W 128 flight to Paris took off from Chennai at 1.45am on Sunday.

This was followed by a multi-faith prayer, after which the airline handed over boarding passes to the first guests to check in for the maiden flight.

N Shankar of the Sanmarg group gave floral presentations to the passengers while DGCA official Shanmugam and Assistant Commissioner of Police Vijaykumar handed over boarding passes.

TN to see no vacancy of docs, nurses in GHs in 3 months: Health minister

Tiruvannamalai: In three months' time the state won't have any vacancy of doctors and nurses in government hospitals and primary health centres, according to health minister C Vijaya Baskar.

He was speaking on Friday after inaugurating the newly constructed three-storey building at the premises of Cheyyar government hospital. The building was constructed at a cost of Rs10 crore under the National Health Mission.

Baskar said chief minister Edappadi K Palanisami handed over appointment orders to 316 assistant doctors on Friday. The state government had appointed 22,358 doctors and nurses in the last four years. Of them, 2,800 doctors and nurses were appointed in the last one year itself, he added.

The government hospitals have also earned a revenue of Rs1,555 crore under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, he said.

The government hospital in Arni would soon be upgraded into district headquarter hospital. The government had allocated Rs23 crore for the upgradation and development of government hospitals in Tiruvannamalai district, said the minister, adding that the government has issued the fund allocation order to the tune of Rs3.37 crore to procure modern X-ray, scan and surgery equipment for the GH in Cheyyar.

திருவனந்தபுரம்: தனது காதலனைக் கொன்று துண்டுத் துண்டாக வெட்டி வீசிய வழக்கில் பல ஆண்டுகளாகத் தேடப்பட்டு வரும் கேரளாவைச் சேர்ந்த மருத்துவர் ஓமனா மலேசியாவில் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டதாக தகவல்கள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன.

மலேசியாவில் அடையாளம் தெரியாத இந்தியப் பெண் ஒருவர் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டு உயிரிழந்ததாக, ஒரு  பெண்ணின் புகைப்படத்தை, ஊடகங்களில் வெளியிட்டது இந்திய தூதரகம். இதைப் பார்த்து, புகைப்படத்தில் இருப்பவர் தேடப்பட்டு வரும் குற்றவாளி ஓமனா என்று செய்திகள் வெளியாகின. ஓமனாவின் குடும்பத்தினரும் உருவ ஒற்றுமை இருப்பதாகவேக் கூறினர்.

இந்த நிலையில், அந்த பெண் ஓமனா இல்லை என்பதும், அவர் திருவனந்தபுரம் செரியாத்துராவைச் சேர்ந்த 37 வயதாகும் மெர்லின் ரூபி என்பதும் உறுதி செய்யப்பட்டது.

மலேசியாவில் உள்ள மின்சாதனப் பொருட்கள் விற்பனைக் கடையில் பணியாற்றிய மெர்லின், கடந்த ஜூன் மாதம் மாடியில் இருந்து தவறி விழுந்த பலியானார். அவரது அடையாளம் தெரியாமல், அவரது உடல் கடந்த 4 மாதங்களாக பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டு வந்த நிலையில்தான் இந்திய தூதரகம் அவரது புகைப்படத்தை செய்தியுடன் வெளியிட்டது.

கடந்த 4 மாதங்களாக மெர்லினைத் தேடி வந்த அவரது குடும்பத்தார், அடையாளம் காண்பித்து உடலைக் கொண்டு வந்து கடந்த 18ம் தேதி இறுதிச் சடங்குகளை செய்துவிட்டனர். இவ்வளவுக்கும் பிறகு தான், அந்த புகைப்படம் ஓமனா என்று செய்திகள் வெளியாகி பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

முரளிதரன் என்பவரை ஒமனா காதலித்துள்ளார். ஆனால் அவருக்கு ஏற்கனவே திருமணமானதால், அவர் தன்னை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து விடுவாரோ என்று கருதிய ஓமனா, 1996ம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை 11ம் தேதி, தனது காதலன் முரளிதரனை விஷம் வைத்துக் கொலை செய்தார். அவரது உடலை துண்டுத் துண்டாக வெட்டி சூட்கேஸில் நிரப்பி டேக்ஸி மூலம் ஊட்டி மற்றும் கொடைக்கானல் பகுதிகளில் உடல் பாகங்களை வீசினார்.

இந்த வழக்கில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டு சென்னை சென்ட்ரலில் இருந்த சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த இவர், கடந்த 2001ம் ஆண்டு ஜாமீனில் வெளியே வந்தார். அப்போது அவர் தப்பிக்கவில்லை. ஜாமீன் முடிந்து சிறைக்குத் திரும்பிய பிறகு அங்கிருந்து அவர் தப்பிச் சென்று தலைமறைவனார். தேடப்படும் குற்றவாளியாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டார். 

இந்த நிலையில்தான் மெர்லின் ரூபியின் புகைப்படம் வெளியானது. சாயலில் அவர் ஓமனா போல இருந்ததால், ஓமனா இறந்துவிட்டதாக செய்திகள் வெளியாகி பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
