Member of Punjab Scheduled Caste commission arrested for taking bribe of Rs 50,000

CHANDIGARH: A member of the Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission was arrested "red-handed" while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 by sleuths of the state vigilance bureau.
An official spokesperson of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau said State SC Commission member Babu Singh Panjawa was arrested on a complaint of Major Singh, a resident of Dhaula village in Barnala district.
He said Dhaula village resident Gurjant Singh had submitted a written complaint to the State SC Commission against Major Singh under the SC Act for allegedly uttering castiest remarks against him and the same was being probed by SC commission member Babu Singh.
The spokesperson said Major Singh approached the bureau and informed that Babu Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 5,00,000 to give a decision in his favour, but the matter was settled at Rs 2,50,000.
The complainant said he has paid Rs 2,50,000 to the SC Commission member on October 22 to exonerate him in the matter but was demanding Rs 50,000 more to hand over the copy of the verdict.
The spokesman informed that after verifying his information, the vigilance team laid a trap and the accused Babu Singh Panjawa was "caught red handed" at Lambi, Sri Muktsar Sahib district while accepting the bribe from the complainant in presence of two official witnesses.
He said a case under relevant provision of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at police station VB Ferozepur and further investigations was under progress.
In addition to this, another case was also been registered against him for carrying a .32 bore revolver in his vehicle as the district administration had already imposed prohibitory orders in the district.
