CHENNAI: MTC bus services were affected in Chennai on Monday due to rain and Thevar Jayanthi celebrations. Buses arrived more than one-and-a-half hours late at many depots, especially those in South Chennai.

MTC sources said services had been disrupted after it began to rain in the morning. After 9am, there was a steady flow of people from different parts Chennai and nearby districts to Nandanam to garland the statue of U Muthuramalinga Thevar on his 110th birth anniversary. This affected traffic on the Anna Salai.

Buses from South Chennai areas like Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Besant Nagar, the East Coast Road and the OMR which were going towards Broadway, Tiruvottiyur and other North Chennai areas via Saidapet and Nandanam were moving at a snail's phase due to heavy traffic on the Anna Salai.

A senior MTC officer said drivers and conductors slated for morning shift came to duty on time. The services began at 5.30am, as usual. However, a number of buses got stuck in traffic after it began to rain after people thronged the Thevar statue on the Anna Salai. In many depots in South Chennai, buses which were to close the morning shift by 2pm had not arrived even after 2.30pm, the officer said.
