NELLORE: Almost a month after a 45-year-old man underwent an appendicitis operation at the Nellore Government General Hospital (GGH) here, he had to be readmitted only to learn that a pair of surgical scissors was left behind in his stomach during the earlier surgery.

Hospital sources said the patient Sireekapu Chalapathi had been suffering from appendicitis for the past few years and upon examination, it was found that the appendix had damaged a portion of his intestines. On October 3, a team of doctors headed by Dr Padma Shree removed Chalapathi's appendix as well as the damaged portion of intestines.

He was immediately operated upon and the scissors were removed, but his condition is still critical.

GGH superintendent Dr Hari has ordered an internal inquiry. The botched operation became public on Monday after the X-Ray showing the scissors inside Chalapathi's stomach was leakedto the media.
