சசிகலா, தினகரன், திவாகரன் அவர்களது உறவினர்கள், ஆதரவாளர்கள் வீடுகள், ஜெயா, நமது எம்ஜிஆர், ஜாஸ் சினிமாஸ் அலுவலகங்களில் மூன்றாவது நாளாக சோதனை நடக்கிறது. தமிழகம், புதுச்சேரி உள்பட 40 இடங்களில் 3-ஆவது நாளாக சோதனை நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.

இதில் பல்வேறு முக்கிய சொத்து ஆவணங்கள் சிக்கி உள்ளது. மேலும் கடந்த ஆண்டு எதிர்க்கட்சிகளால் குற்றம்சாட்டப்பட்ட ஜாஸ் சினிமாஸை வாங்கியது குறித்தும் கேள்வி எழுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளதாக தகவல் வெளியாகி உள்ளது.

இதற்காக 2013 ஆண்டில் கட்டப்பட்ட திரையரங்கங்களுக்கு அனுமதியளிக்கப்படாமல் ஒரு வருடம் அலைக்கழிக்க வைக்கப்பட்டதாக அப்போது புகார் எழுந்தது.

இதே போல் மத்திய நேரடி வரிவிதிப்பு ஆணையத்துக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட அறிக்கையில் பல திடுக்கிடும் தகவல்கள் உள்ளதாக கூறப்படுகிறது. இதுவரை நடத்தப்பட்ட சோதனையில் ரூ.1000 கோடி மதிப்புள்ள சொத்து ஆவணங்கள் சிக்கியதாகவும், 60 போலி நிறுவனங்கள் தொடர்பான ஆவணங்கள் கிடைத்துள்ளதாகவும், இதுவரை கைப்பற்றப்பட்ட ஆவணங்கள் மற்றும் நிறுவனங்கள் குறித்து மதிப்பீடு செய்தல் மற்றும் முறைகேடுகள் குறித்த கணக்கில் வராத 15 கிலோ தங்கம், ரூ.5.5 கோடி கணக்கில் காட்டப்படாத ரொக்கப்பணம் கைப்பற்றப்பட்டதாக கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

போலி நிறுவனங்களில் வருவாய் வந்ததாக காட்டப்பட்டு ரூ.150 கோடிக்கு அசையும் மற்றும் அசையா சொத்துகள் வாங்கப்பட்டதாகவும் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. 150 வங்கிக்கணக்குகள் முடக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதாகவும் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதே போல் பணமதிப்பு நீக்க நடவடிக்கையின் போது 50 நாட்களுக்குள் கோடிக்கணக்கான ரூபாய்களை மாற்றியதாகவும் அறிக்கையில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கைப்பற்றப்பட்ட பெரும்பாலான ஆவணங்கள், தகவல்கள் அனைத்தும் விவேக் ஜெயராமன், அவரது சகோதரி கிருஷ்ணப்ரியா மற்றும் ஆடிட்டர்களிடம் கைப்பற்றப்பட்டதாக தகவல் வெளியாகி உள்ளது. மூன்றாம் நாளான இன்று திடீரென திவாகரனின் மகள் ராஜமாதங்கி ஈக்காட்டுத்தாங்கல் கலைமகள் நகரில் வசிக்கிறார் இவரது வீட்டிலும் இன்று வருமான வரித்துறை அதிகாரிகள் சோதனை நடத்தினர்.

கர்நாடக மாநில அதிமுக அம்மா அணி செயலாளர் புகழேந்தி வீட்டில் சோதனை நடத்திய வருமான வரித்துறை அதிகாரிகள் வரும் திங்கள்கிழமை சென்னை வருமான வரி அலுவலகத்தில் நேரில் ஆஜராகி விளக்கம் அளிக்க அவருக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளனர்.

புற்று நோயுடன் போராடும் 5 வயது சிறுமி சாஸ்திகா , தன்னை காப்பாற்றுமாறு வேண்டுகிறாள்

5 வயது சிறுமி சாஸ்திகா, சரண்யா- ரத்தினகுமார் அவர்களின் ஒரே மகள். நல்ல ஆரோக்கியமும் அறிவும் பெற்ற மகளை எண்ணி மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தனர். ஆனால் அவர்களின் மகிழ்ச்சி நீண்ட நாட்கள் நீடிக்கவில்லை. கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம், கேன்சர்(புற்றுநோய்) எனும் உயிரைப்பறிக்கும் கொடிய நோயால் சாஸ்திகா பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார் என்பது தெரியவந்தது.


இந்த புற்று நோய் உடல் முழுவதும் பரவும் தன்மை உடையது
ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் சாஸ்திகாவிற்கு கடுமையான காய்ச்சல் ஏற்பட்டது. மருந்து மாத்திரைகள் ஏதும் சரி செய்ய முடியவில்லை. காய்ச்சல் இருபது நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்து இருந்ததால் இரத்த பரிசோதனை, ஸ்கேன் செய்து பார்த்தனர். அதில் நியூரோபிளாஸ்டோமா என்ற கேன்சர் இருப்பதாக தெரியவந்தது. இது பொதுவாக சிறுநீரகத்தில் ஏற்படும், பிறகு வயிறு, கழுத்து, எலும்பு என்று உடல் முழுவதும் பரவும் தன்மை உடையது. உடனடியாக கீமோதெரபி, அறுவை சிகிச்சை, ஸ்டெம் செல் மாற்று சிகிச்சை, ரேடியோதெரபி செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று மருத்துவர்கள் எச்சரித்தனர்.

உடனடியாக சிகிச்சை மேற்கொள்ளாவிட்டால் உயிருக்கு பாதிப்பு ஏற்பட கூடும் என்பதால் இப்போது 10 நாட்களுக்கு ஒரு முறை கீமோதெரபி மேற்கொள்கிறாள்.

"அவளுக்கு மேக் அப் செய்து கொள்வதில் ஆர்வம் அதிகம். அவள் கண் இமைகள் அடர்த்தியாக இருக்கும். ஆனால் இப்போது முடியெல்லாம் கொட்டி சோர்வாக இருக்கிறாள். அவளுக்காக நானும் மொட்டை அடித்து கொள்ள இருக்கிறேன். இதுவரைக்கும் அவள் எதற்காகவும் அடம்பிடித்தது இல்லை. இப்போ அவளை காப்பற்ற சொல்லி வலியில் தினமும் அழுகிறாள். ஆனால் ஏதும் செய்ய முடியாமல் நான் நிற்கிறேன்" - என்று சரண்யா கூறுகிறார்

Chennai: A 33-year-old man was arrested by the cyber crime wing of the city police on Saturday for impersonating and cheating women of several lakhs through matrimonial sites.

In September, a divorcee with an autistic child approached the city police commissioner's office seeking action against an ortho surgeon from the US. The woman had registered her name in one of the matrimonial websites through which the accused contacted her.

“He identified himself as Dr Prashanth Prasad, an ortho surgeon living in USA. He invited me and my son to USA to take the marriage proposal forward claiming that he was occupied with work and couldn't come to India,” the woman mentioned in her complaint.

The man suggested the woman apply for a fiancée visa (K1/K2 visa) and on the pretext of helping her with the process, he usurped Rs 11.5 lakh from her, police said.

The woman never got the visa and when she started questioning him about it, he kept on dodging her and subsequently cut off the contacts with the woman.

Realising that she had been taken for a ride, the woman approached the police, after which special teams were formed to investigate the case. During the course of the investigation, police found out that the man who posed himself as an ortho surgeon is a resident of Guduvanchery near Chennai.

He had cheated several women impersonating himself as Dr Prashanth, Gowtham, George among many names, police said. His original name is R. Kumar Durai. He was produced before the Alandur judicial magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Police advised the public to exercise caution while dealing with strangers through matrimonial websites.

After uproar, Pune University removes vegetarian condition for gold medalist

Pune: After the backlash on social media, the Savitribai Phule Pune University has decided not to confer the gold medal given in the name of Ramchandra Shelar till his family removes the condition that only those students who are vegetarian and teetotallers, can apply for the honour.

When the varsity posted a circular on its website recently, listing the eligibility criteria of the now scrapped gold medal, it was met with sheer outrage. But the backlash seems to have taught them a lesson as they omitted the medal prize from the website in a bid to assert that the institution has taken steps to undo their action.

Professor (Dr) Nitin R. Karmalkar, Vice-Chancellor, said that the sponsors of the Maharishi Keertankar Shelar Mama Gold medal are the Shelar family. “And their traditions keep them from indulging in non-vegetarian food and alcohol. The Shelar family, in honour of Maharishi Keertankar Shelar, started the medal back in 2006. And they wanted it just so,” he said. He said, “Now, with the consent of the Shelar family, we will be annulling the scholarship,” he said.

Monsoon active again, city to get rain until Wednesday

Chennai: The northeast monsoon is once again active and is expected to bring rain to the city until Wednesday. The met office has predicted about 2cm-6cm of rain on Sunday.

Weather blogger Pradeep John said, "This will be the second spell of the northeast monsoon. Usually one spell brings rainfall for only 3-4 days, but the first spell had brought rainfall for nine days." Rainfall will be concentrated in the coastal districts, particularly in the stretch connecting Chennai and Nagapattinam.

The city will get intermittent showers on Sunday, said area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran. Most parts of north coastal TN and some parts of south coastal TN will get rainfall on Sunday. Isolated rainfall will occur in the interior districts.

Some spells will bring heavy (7-11cm) or very heavy rainfall (12-20cm) in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, said Pradeep John.

According to an IMD bulletin, a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal around Tuesday.

Since October, Tamil Nadu has received 25cm, against the normal of 26cm. Chennai however has recorded excess rainfall, receiving 68cm against the normal of 41cm.

The combined level of the four drinking water reservoirs at Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Redhills and Cholavaram is currently 37% of the total capacity.

The met office has forecast a maximum and minimum temperature of 29°C and 24°C on Sunday.

Sekhar Reddy moves HC to quash money laundering case

CHENNAI: Sand mining baron Sekhar Reddy and his associate Srinivasulu have approached the Madras high court to quash the enforcement directorate (ED) proceedings under Prevention of Money Laundering (PML) Act. The matter is pending before the principal sessions court in Chennai. Admitting their plea, Justice M S Ramesh has directed the ED to file their reply by two weeks.

The criminal proceedings were initiated by the ED under PMLA, after income tax department seized 34 crore unaccounted money in new denomination notes of 2,000 and gold worth several crore in December 2016.

According to the petitioners, though no offence had been made out against them, ED, without following any due procedure of law and relying on the investigations done by the other agencies, initiated criminal proceedings under PML Act. Claiming that the case is vitiated, illegal and void, they submitted that the complaint filed by the ED was without jurisdiction, premature and ultra vires the provisions the Act.

"The CBI is yet to either identify the involvement of the alleged bank officials or prima facie make out an offence or file a charge sheet for the allegations of conversion of the old currency notes into the new denomination notes," they said. Asserting that they had not indulged in conversion of old currency notes into new currency notes, they added that even otherwise it is not an offence declared under any law.

Bar council prohibits 742 lawyers from practising

Chennai: More than 700 lawyers who did law after foundation degrees obtained through open university system cannot practice in courts, as the state bar councilhas issued them prohibitory orders.

The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry issued orders to a total of 742 advocates, and made it clear that they could not practice law pending disposal of show cause notices to be issued against them. A communication issued by the council's secretary C Raja Kumar said a special committee of the council had passed a resolution to this effect at its meeting on November 9.

The decision was made, as the enrolment 742 advocates are against Rule 5 of the Legal Education Rules, 2008 and in the light of the order passed by the Madras high court on October 25. TNN

High court appoints former judge Rajeswaran to head PT Lee Trust

Chennai: The Madras high court has appointed former judge of the court, Justice S Rajeswaran, as chairman of PT Lee Chengalvaraya Naicker Trust, one of the biggest and richest in the state.

The court has also appointed nine trustees to assist the chairman, and empowered him to report deviant behaviour of trustees, if any, to the court.

Justice R Subramanian passed the order while allowing an application moved by the trust for appointment of a chairman for its administration.

This apart, the court also rejected an objection raised by P T Lee Chengalvaraya Naicker Polytechnic College Staff Association that as per the composition of the board of trustees, there could only be four persons from the Vanniyar community.

"There is no such prescription in the scheme decree. While appointing trustees under the scheme decree, this court can only consider the desirability or suitability of the candidates, who had applied. A perusal of the entire set of 101 applications, shows that 98 applications are from people belonging to Vanniyar community. The scheme decree does not prescribe that the Vanniyar community should not have a representation of more than four people. If there are no applicants from the other communities, this court cannot go in search of persons and invite them to file the applications to be nominated as trustees," the judge said.

The court then directed the newly appointed trustees to take charge November 15 and posted the plea to November 17 for reporting compliance.

500 depositors petition cops against chit fund, Rs 200 crore scam suspected

Chennai: More than 500 people have approached the city police, with a complaint that a chit fund company had shut shop without returning their deposits nor paying interest as promised. Thripura Chit Fund had more than 150 branches in the state including Chennai Bangalore, Mysore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chengalpet, Calicut, Puducherry and Nellore.

Police suspect the business to be a scam involving more than Rs 200 crore. Despite several complaints pouring in from different parts of the state for the past two months, neither the city police nor police attached to the economic offences wing (EOW) have registered any FIRs so far. Many police personnel asked the complainants to approach the Saidapet police station as the company's headquarters was situated in the area falling under the Saidapet police's purview.

A police officer said, "The complainants have given petitions against the chit fund firm as they failed to return money to the matured depositors."

When a group of people approached the firm demanding the management return their money, there was a commotion. Subsequently, the aggrieved depositors lodged police complaints.

As the news spread, depositors flooded police stations to file complaints against the firm. A police officer said, "Though the petitioners have submitted their complaints, they also asked us not to pursue any case, as the chit fund officials have promised to return money on or before Monday. So, we are also waiting for the confirmation from the petitioners."

A policeman at the Saidapet crime wing police station said, "We will register a cheating case and transfer it to EOW." Police sources said, "Police personnel are lying low at the moment as the chit fund officials are buying time to return money to the depositors."

Krishnaprasad Venkatrao Perumbude is the managing director of the chit fund firm registered in the year 2003 adding five more directors in 2011 and one more director in 2013.

Mosquito menace is man-made, says HC

Chennai: Blaming dengue and other such diseases on encroachments, violator-officer collusion and absence of setback space for buildings, the Madras high court said mosquito menace is man-made and there is a chain reaction for every such man-made wrong.

"Authorities turn a blind eye to construction of buildings that are in violation of Act and rules, and pave way for encroachments. Lakes, ponds and water channels are being clogged by buildings everywhere, for which the authorities are to be blamed," Justice S Vaidyanathan said.

The judge made the observations while quashing two orders the Salem corporation commissioner passed against a private hospital and an individual, slapping Rs 10 and Rs 15 lakh respectively for unhealthy conditions in their premises. The orders were passed as part of a dengue prevention drive initiated by the government across the state.

"A reading of the notice shows that no prior opportunity was given before imposition of fine. Admittedly, there is violation of principles of natural justice, as the fine amount is directly imposed upon the petitioners and not in accordance with the statute," the judge said.

The judge added that the severity of the menace was demonstrated by the sitting judges of the Madurai bench recently. The Madurai bench had asked staff to kill scores of mosquitoes with an electric racket, right on the judge's dais in the centrally air-conditioned court hall No 1.

IPS officer caught copying suspended

Chennai: The tainted trainee IPS officer Safeer Karim, who was arrested for copying using bluetooth and gadgets at the UPSC mains examinations at a centre in Egmore on October 30, has been placed under suspension as per the order of the state home secretary on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu state home secretary Niranjan Mardi issued the orders on Friday to place Safeer Karim under suspension under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules. After he was apprehended on November 1 and detained in Puzhal prison, the city police sent a detailed report to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Based on their direction, the state home secretary issued the orders.

On October 30, Karim, a probationer, was found copying with the help of hi-tech devices in the examination held at the Presidency Girls' Higher Secondary School, Egmore.

Unauthorised pvt paramedical institute sealed in Villupuram

Villupuram: The district administration on Saturday sealed a private paramedical institute, which was apparently functioning without valid approval and affiliation, and arrested its principal on charges of harassing, assaulting and cheating girl students following a complaint from a section of students on Friday.

The arrested was identified as K Sathya, 29, principal of Sathya institute of paramedical sciences at Sankarapuram in the district. Her husband P Kalaimani, 38, who is the correspondent of the institute, absconded after learning that police have registered a case against him.

Police said a section of students from the institute submitted a petition to the district collector on Friday charging that the institute, which promised free nursing education, has forced them to work as home nurses to take care of ailing people in Chennai. They alleged that they were physically tortured and forced to do domestic and menial work, including cleaning toilets, at the patients' houses. They also charged that the institute, which collected fee for their services from the clients, failed to pay them.

They alleged that the institute correspondent and principal threatened them with dire consequences when they refused to work as domestic maids on the pretext of home nurses and insisted on placement in nursing homes and hospitals. They said the institute management threatened to withhold their school certificates and refused to provide diploma in nursing certificates if they failed to comply with the orders of the institute.

Sankarapuram police have registered a case against Kalaimani and Sathya under Sections 294 (obscene acts and songs), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 384 (punishment for extortion), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 506 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 (penalty for harassment of women) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998, following a direction from the district administration.

The institute, which has been functioning for the past eight years, offers several courses, including a two-year diploma in nursing. The institute, without any proper infrastructure, has been luring poor students on the pretext of extending free nursing education and forcing them to work as home nurses as part of internship.

It may be recalled that three girl students of a private medical college of yoga and naturopathy were found dead under mysterious circumstances in a well near the college at Chinna Salem in the district in January last year.

T Monisha from Chennai, E Saranya from Kancheepuram district and V Priyanka from Tiruvarur district were found dead in a well near the college under mysterious circumstances on January 23. Police claimed that the students committed suicide to register their protest against the management for collecting exorbitant fees. However, the parents of the girls charged that the girls were murdered and held the college management responsible for the murder.

'Searches by I-T ongoing at places belonging to associates of Sasikala'

CHENNAI: A senior I-T official said, "Vivek and his associates used the money from these bank accounts to buy movable and immovable properties worth several crores."

Searches were still continuing in some places, including Kodanad estate owned by Sasikala, because some lockers there were yet to be opened, the source said. "Our officials are questioning some people to ferret out more details about the seized documents," said the official.

The sleuths completed search operation in most places on Saturday. "But searches are continuing in Jaya TV office and houses of Vivek and Krishna Priya," the official said. Searches are going on at places belonging to various associates of Sasikala and her family in Cuddalore, Namakkal districts.

Searches at Jaaz Cinemas have led the I-T officials to another multiplex in the city. Officials have sought clarification on purchase of 11 screens by Jaaz Cinemas from the multiplex in 2015. The owners of the multiplex are being questioned.

With regard to some documents seized from Dhivaharan's premises at Mannargudi, officials are questioning his daughter Rajamathangi, a resident of Chennai.

"She had imported many foreign cars. We are probing the source of funds for those purchases. She is also being asked to explain the source and other details about the purchase of property.," another official said. In all, 355 people have so far come under the I-T scanner in this round of searches.

Tamil Nadu colleges create 16 thousand duplicate entries for government scholarships

COIMBATORE: Collegesacross Tamil Nadu have created nearly 16,000 duplicate entries to receive Rs 3 crore in government scholarships earmarked for students belonging to the backward classes (BC), most backward classes (MBC), scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST), government records show.

With no validation mechanism in place, this has resulted in a windfall for some students - who have received the scholarship multiple times under different IDs within the same academic year - at the expense of others who should have benefited but were denied funding.

The state government through the BC, MBC & minorities welfare department and adi dravidar & tribal welfare department provides scholarships to students in Tamil Nadu under 11 different schemes including pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes. However, the state government had slashed scholarships for engineering, medicine, law and other students belonging to these communities citing a fund crunch.

Until 2009-10, conventional methods were used for disbursing the scholarship amount to students. A web-based application - Electronic Clearance System (ECS) - was introduced in the same year to make the entire transaction digital.

The scholarship amount was credited to individual bank accounts of students after the district-level authorities verified and sanctioned claims submitted through their respective colleges.

Government records show that district-level authorities in the said departments approved nearly 16,000 scholarship claims without scrutinising the records.

College authorities had created duplicate IDs for the same student. "There was no validation option available in the ECS software to reject multiple entries. Consequently, scholarships were granted multiple times to the same set of students," said government sources.

Besides this, government data suggests that nearly 5,000 bank accounts were used numerous times for disbursing the scholarship amount. Some of the accounts were used more than 70 times, said sources.

A district-level official from the adi dravidar welfare department said that an enquiry was initiated in 2016-17 in which some of the colleges claimed that they made multiple entries by mistake.

"To overcome this, changes have been made in the ECS this year (2017-18). Instructions have been given to verify Aadhaar card linked with bank accounts of all the beneficiaries so that there is no duplication," the official added.

Also, nearly 75,000 applications received by the departments between 2013-14 and 2015-16 remain pending at various stages. Authorities replied that necessary changes have been made to ensure that the pending applications were cleared soon.

Little-known viral fever now sends children to doctors

CHENNAI: It is the season of fever,but doctors are also dealing with an influx of child patients with a little-known viral infection that has the symptoms of dengue and chicken pox. Since 2010 when hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), caused by a virus found in the intestine, made a comeback, doctors in Chennai have recorded a three-fold rise in cases. "Although we now see HFMD cases throughout the year,it usually peaks in summer.

This time, the pattern seems different. In the last one week alone I've seen aroundseven cases," saidDr Deepa Hariharan, neonatologist at Sooriya Hospital.Thoughfrom thesamefamily thatcausesfoot and mouth disease in cattle, in humans, it affects children in the 1-11 age group and is uncommon in adults. Caused by viruses of the picornaviridae family,it can spread when a person comes in contact with the mucus, saliva, or faeces of an infected person.

In rarecases,it may require hospitalisation; in very rare cases, it can be fatal as patients can develop complications like encephalitis, meningitis or paralysis, inflammations of lungs or hemorrhage. In most cases, intervention is rarely required, said Dr S Balasubramanian, medical director of Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital, adding that they received atleastthree cases a day. "You just wait till it goes away, which takes 10-12 days," he said. HFMD causes fever, diarrohoea, sore throat and lesions in the palms, soles and mouth. "Doctors sometimes misdiagnose it and give children antibiotics. There are no tests to confirm, or medicines to heal, HFMD," saidDr Balasubramanian.

Doctors say HFMD typically spreads in enclosed spaces like classrooms. "It usually occurs in pre-school andkindergarten children as their resistance level is low," Dr Hariharan said. Patients with high fever are given paracetamol, and those with rashes are prescribed anti-allergens. In the the 2010 outbreak, health experts tried to study the virus butthe projecthit a dead-end for want of samples.

CHENNAI: A tigress in the city zoo killed an entire litter of four cubs on Monday, just a day after giving birth, apparently after an ill-informed attempt to fix security cameras in its enclosure distressed the animal.

A forest range officer, Prashanth, newly posted to the Vandalur Reserve Forestarea, had engaged four workers to put up the cameras in tigress Uthra's pen in Arignar Anna Zoological Park, zookeepers told TOI on Friday.

They said senior members of the zoo staff repeatedly attempted to dissuade the forester from disturbing the tigress because it had just had a litter, but to no avail. "Uthra became distraught and turned violent, finally taking out its anger on the newborn cubs," a senior zookeeper said on condition of anonymity.

"We found the four cubs dead inside the tigress' enclosure on Monday and informed zoo officials," he said. "They called government veterinarians to the spot."

The veterinarians performed autopsies on the cubs and examined the tigress but are yet to release their report.

An animal keeper submitted a report to the zoo's deputy director, an IFS officer, detailing the sequence of events leading to the deaths of the cubs.

The officer, Sudha, has called for a departmental inquiry into the case. A zoo official confirmed that the forest official had engaged four men, who climbed on trees to get close to the tigress' enclosure and fixed eight cameras all around it. "The workers connected the cameras to the zoo's control room to monitor the animal," he said.

A senior I-T official said teams seized Rs 6 crore in cash, 8.5 kg gold worth Rs 2.4 crore and documents relating to investments worth Rs 1,200 crore, for which their owners could not provide any source of income.

They searched the hostel of Sengamala Thayaar Educational Trust Women's College, owned by Sasikala's brother V Dhivaharan at Sundarakottai in Mannargudi, the family's native village, and seized several valuables that were hidden in unused hostel rooms, said sources. "They include diamond jewellery and Rolex watches. We are in the process of assessing their value," said an official.

Officials said they grew suspicious when 12 protesters objected to their entry into the college. Their refrain was that I-T officials would plant valuables in the college to trap Dhivaharan.

The protesters were arrested on Friday. On Friday, searches concluded at 50 of the 188 premises I-T teams visited. 'Operation Clean Money' is set to continue in most places including Sasikala's Kodanad tea estate in the Nilgiris — which was partly owned by the late CM J Jayalalithaa — on Saturday. "Questioning of inmates is continuing in many places," said the official. Many incriminating documents relating to shell firms were seized from the premises of Jaya TV MD and Sasikala's nephew Vivek Jayaraman and his sister Krishna Priya.

Their mother Ilavarasi is convicted along with Sasikala in the wealth case. The officials copied several documents from laptops and desktops at Jayaraman's and Priya's residences. At Jayaraman's father-inlaw Baskar's residence in Anna Nagar, an argument broke out between Chitra, a relative of Baskar and I-T officials when they seized some gold ornaments.

She claimed the ornaments belonged to her and that they were kept at Baskar's house because her house at Kolathur on the outskirts of the city was flooded. I-T officials said she could reclaim the valuables if she could produce documents to prove her claim.

Railways to install loudspeakers at level crossings to warn vehicles of incoming trains

BAREILLY: In the aftermath of a train-tanker collision on October 26, which claimed the life of the tanker driver and leaving a dozen train passengers injured, the railways is all set to install loudspeakers at level crossings that will broadcast alerts whenever a train approaches.

Rajendra Singh, PRO of North East Railways' Izzatnagar division, said on Saturday, "All 632 level crossings, including the 145 which are unmanned, will be equipped with loudspeakers at either side of the tracks.

"Besides, all the signals at level crossings will be interlocked with the gates and until the latter are closed, there will be no green signal for the train," he added.

According to Rajen Gohain, the minister of state for railways, 360 people have been killed in train accidents during the past two years. Of these, 110 were killed in 55 accidents at level crossings across the country.

In a reply to a question raised by the Rajya Sabha member Chunibhai Gohel on August 11, Gohain informed the house that 40 persons were killed at unmanned level crossings during the financial year 2016-17.

Singh told TOI, "To prevent accidents at level crossings, we are taking all measures including installation of loudspeakers and interlocking the gates with signal poles. We are continuously working to close such crossings by providing alternative provisions like subways, flyovers and connecting roads. However, sometimes adamant public supported by politicians prevent such projects from being implemented."

According to the district administration, BJP MLA Bhoharan Lal Maurya has written to railways not to construct subway at level crossing 19 of Lalkuan section.

During 2016-17, Izzatnagar division closed 22 unmanned crossings and provided subways at five of them. The remaining 17 have been connected to nearby crossings by road. Besides, at those crossings which have one lakh train-vehicle units (TVU) every 24 hours, flyovers are being constructed.

"We have installed loudspeakers at five level crossings, including at Izzatnagar. Very soon all crossings will have this. Meanwhile, at 200 crossings gates have been interlocked with the track signals so far," Singh added.
