'Vamsam' TV serial actress commits suicide in Chennai

Chennai: Television artiste Priyanka of 'Vamsam' serial-fame committed suicide at her residence at Valasaravakkam here during the early hours of today.

Her body has been taken to Government Kilpauk Hospital for post-mortem.

When this reporter visited the spot - an apartment on Sivan Street - the Valasaravakkam police said she must have committed suicide on Tuesday night. However, confusion prevails as the investigation officials are not clear about the reason behind her decision to end her life.

This morning, when Priyanka's maid entered her room, she was shocked to see the actress hanging. Following this, she informed the police who rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

As soon as news spread, neighbours started to gather in front of the house of the actress.

Priyanka married a basketball coach, Arunbala, three years ago. According to sources in the area, there had always been arguments between the couple.

It is also said the fights were mostly because they were childless. "We have heard them quarrelling on and off. Their arguments were mainly because of having no baby even after three years of marriage," said a resident.

It is also learnt that Priyanka was living alone for the past few weeks.

However, the police have not come to any conclusion. "We have started to investigate. We can say anything only after the inquiry," a police official said, and added that her husband will be questioned.

He also said even the time of death was not yet confirmed which would be known only after the post-mortem.

In recent months, a couple of TV artistes have committed suicide, leading to concern about the well-being of such actors.

Actress Shobana and actor Sai Prashanth ended their lives due to reasons including mental stress.

A senior actress said, "There is an increase in such suicides by artistes due to pressure. It is high time the Small Screen Artistes Association organised a workshop or counselling session for its members."

`கூல்டிரிங்க்ஸ் குடித்தேன், மயங்கிவிட்டேன்' என்று திருவண்ணாமலை மாவட்ட நீதிபதி மகிழேந்தியிடம் கண்ணீர் மல்க ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண் வாக்குமூலம் கொடுத்துள்ளார்.

திருவண்ணாமலை, செங்கம் காலனி, கஸ்தூரி நகரில் உள்ள அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் ரத்தக் காயங்களுடன் ரஷ்ய நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த இளம்பெண் மயங்கிக் கிடந்தார். தற்போது அவருக்கு மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டுவருகிறது. நேற்று அவருக்கு சுய நினைவு திரும்பியது. உடனடியாகப் பெண் போலீஸார் அவரிடம் விசாரித்தனர். அப்போது அவர், கூட்டாகச் சிலர் தனக்கு பாலியல் தொந்தரவு கொடுத்ததாகக் குறிப்பிட்டார். அவர்கள் யார் என்று போலீஸார் விசாரித்தனர். அப்போதுதான் பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாட்டத்தின்போது ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண்ணிடம் 5 பேர் அத்துமீறிய தகவல் போலீஸாருக்குக் கிடைத்தது. அவர்களைக் கைது செய்து தனித் தனியாகப் போலீஸார் விசாரித்தனர். விசாரணையில் திடுக்கிடும் தகவல்கள் வெளியாகின.

இதுகுறித்து போலீஸார் கூறுகையில், ``மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை பெறும் ரஷ்ய பெண்ணுக்குக் கூட்டாகச் சிலர் பாலியல் தொல்லை கொடுத்துள்ளனர். அதுதொடர்பாக விசாரித்தபோது ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண் தங்கியிருந்த அப்பார்ட்மென்ட் விடுதியில் வேலைபார்க்கும் ஊழியர்கள் மீது எங்களுக்குச் சந்தேகம் ஏற்பட்டது. சம்பவத்தன்று அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் வேலைபார்க்கும் ஊழியர் மணிகண்டன் என்பவருக்குப் பிறந்தநாள். அதை நண்பர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து அவர் கொண்டாடியுள்ளார். அந்த விழாவில் நீலகண்டன், பாரதி, சிவா, வெங்கட் ஆகியோர் பங்கேற்றுள்ளனர். போதை தலைக்கெறியதும் அவர்களின் மனம் மாறியுள்ளது.

மகாலெட்சுமி என்பவர், “தண்ணி பிடிச்சு வீட்டுக்குள்ள தூக்கிட்டுப் போறதுக்குள்ள தாவு தீந்துருது. எங்க நன்மைக்காக மழைநீர் வடிகால் கட்டுறோம்னு சொல்லிட்டு, எங்க வீடுகளைப் புதைச்சுட்டாங்க” என்றார் வேதனையுடன்.

இந்த விவகாரம் குறித்து கோவை மாநகராட்சி ஆணையர் விஜய கார்த்திகேயன், “இந்தப் பிரச்னை சமீபத்தில்தான் என் கவனத்துக்கு வந்தது. நேரில் போய் விசாரிக்குமாறு சம்பந்தப்பட்ட பொறியாளருக்கு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளேன். உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும்” என்றார்.

சென்னை சைதாப்பேட்டை ஜோன்ஸ் ரோடு பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ப்ரீத்தி. அடையாறில் உள்ள தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார். நேற்றிரவு 9 மணி அளவில் வேலை முடிந்து அவர் வீடு திரும்பினார். சைதாப்பேட்டை மெட்ரோ ரயில் நிலையம் அருகே ப்ரீத்தி, நடந்து வந்தபோது அவரின் செல்போனை பைக்கில் வந்த இரண்டுபேர் பறித்துள்ளனர். அதிர்ச்சியடைந்த ப்ரீத்தி, அவர்களுடன் போராடினார். இதில் கீழே விழுந்த ப்ரீத்தி, படுகாயமடைந்தார். இந்தச் சம்பவத்தை அவ்வழியாகச் சென்ற சின்னமலைப் பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த விக்னேஷ் என்ற இளைஞர் பார்த்தார். பைக்கில் வந்த கொள்ளையர்களுடன் விக்னேஷ் போராடினார்.

ஆனால் ப்ரீத்தி, விக்னேஷ் ஆகியோரின் பிடியிலிருந்து தப்பிய கொள்ளைக் கும்பல் பைக்கில் மின்னல் வேகத்தில் பறந்து சென்றனர். அவர்களை விக்னேஷ், தன்னுடைய பைக்கில் விரட்டினார். தி.நகர் பகுதியில் போக்குவரத்து நெரிசல் காரணமாக கொள்ளையர்கள் பைக்கின் வேகத்தை குறைத்தனர். அப்போது அவர்களை விரட்டிச்சென்ற விக்னேஷ், தன்னுடைய பைக்கைக் கொண்டு மோதினார். இதில் கொள்ளையர்கள் கீழே விழுந்தனர். அவர்கள் இருவரும் தப்பி ஓட முயன்றனர். அவர்களை விக்னேஷ் மடக்கிப்பிடித்து, மாம்பலம் காவல் நிலையத்தில் ஒப்படைத்தார். போலீஸார் நடத்திய விசாரணையில் செல்போனை பறித்தது ஆலந்தூரைச் சேர்ந்த நவீன், நிர்மல் என்று தெரியவந்தது. அவர்கள் இருவரிடமும் போலீஸார் விசாரித்துவருகின்றனர்.

போலீஸார் கூறுகையில் ``சம்பவத்தன்று ப்ரீத்தி, மெட்ரோ ரயில் நிலையம் அருகில் உள்ள தோழியைச் சந்திக்கச் சென்றுள்ளார். அவர் எங்கு இருக்கிறார் என்று கேட்பதற்காக போனில் பேசியுள்ளார். ப்ரீத்தியைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்த கொள்ளையர்கள், அவரிடமிருந்த செல்போனை பறித்துவிட்டுச் சென்றுள்ளனர். அப்போதுதான் விக்னேஷ் அதைப்பார்த்து கொள்ளையர்களிடமிருந்து செல்போனை மீட்க போராடியுள்ளார். விக்னேஷ், டிப்ளமோ படித்துள்ளார். கார் நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்றிய அவர், அந்த வேலையை விட்டுவிட்டு புதிய வேலையைத் தேடி வருகிறார். விக்னேஷ் போல எல்லோரும் செயல்பட்டால் திருட்டு, வழிப்பறி சம்பவங்களுக்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைக்கலாம்" என்றனர்.



இதுகுறித்து விக்னேஷ் கூறுகையில், ``நேற்றிரவு வீட்டுக்கு பைக்கில் சென்றேன். அப்போது, ஒரு இளம்பெண்ணிடம் பைக்கில் வந்த இரண்டு பேர் செல்போனைப் பறித்தனர். அவர்களுடன் அந்தப் பெண் போராடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அதைப்பார்த்ததும் நானும் அந்தப் பெண்ணுக்கு உதவினேன். அதற்குள் பைக்கில் வந்த கொள்ளையர்கள் இளம்பெண்ணைத் தள்ளிவிட்டு பைக்கில் சென்றுவிட்டனர். நான், அவர்களை விரட்டிச் சென்று பிடித்து போலீஸாரிடம் ஒப்படைத்தேன். நான் பிடிக்கும்போது எனக்கு மிரட்டல் விடுத்தனர். அதற்குள் பொதுமக்கள் கூடிவிட்டனர். இன்று காலை எம்.எல்.ஏ. மா.சுப்பிரமணியன் வீட்டுக்கு வந்து வாட்ச் பரிசாகக் கொடுத்தார். போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் ஏ.கே.விஸ்வநாதனும் என்னை அழைத்துப் பாராட்டினார். நான் உதவி செய்த இளம்பெண் நன்றி என்று கூறியபோதுதான் உதவிக்கு கிடைத்த மரியாதையைப் புரிந்துகொண்டேன்" என்றார்.

சுமார் 4 கி.மீட்டர் தூரம் பைக்கில் விரட்டிச் சென்று செல்போன் கொள்ளையர்களைப் பிடித்த விக்னேஷை போலீஸார் பாராட்டினர். இந்த தகவல் சைதாப்பேட்டை தி.மு.க. எம்.எல்.ஏ. மா.சுப்பிரமணியனுக்கு தெரிந்ததும் விக்னேஷை நேரில் அழைத்து வாழ்த்தினார். பிறகு 20,000 ரூபாய் மதிப்புள்ள கைக்கடிகாரம் ஒன்றை பரிசாகக் கொடுத்தார்.

ஏற்கெனவே, சென்னை அண்ணாநகரில் சூர்யா என்ற சிறுவன், தைரியமாக கொள்ளையனைப் பிடித்தான். 18 வயது பூர்த்தியானதும் அவனுக்கு போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் ஏ.கே.விஸ்வநாதன், தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் வேலை வாங்கி கொடுத்தார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Dismiss corrupt govt. servants’

Holding that all government employees found guilty of accepting illegal gratification should be either removed or dismissed from service without any scope for a lesser punishment, the Madras High Court has made a suggestion to the State government to bring in appropriate amendments to the disciplinary rules applicable to government employees.

Justice V. Parthiban directed the High Court Registry to forward his judgement to the Chief Secretary for necessary action. He made the suggestion while dismissing a writ petition filed by a dismissed Sub-Inspector of Police to reduce the punishment imposed on him to compulsory retirement and consequently settle his retirement benefits.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed Saveetha Dental College and Hospital at Rajankuppam near here to pay a compensation of Rs. 2 crore to eight students who were admitted in Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course under the Non-resident Indian quota during the academic year 2016-17.

Though none of them had cleared the mandatory National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) conducted for medical admissions.

Justice S. Vaidyanathan passed the order on a batch of individual writ petitions filed by all eight students who were discharged from the course after payment of the second year fee.

He directed the college to also refund the fee collected for the last two years and expressed concern over the practice of educational institutions attempting to encash “medical illiteracy” under the guise of providing medical education.

The judge agreed with the counsel for Dental Council of India (DCI) S. Haja Mohideen Gisthi that no medical institution could be permitted to either admit or continue to educate students who had been admitted without clearing NEET.

The counsel had contended that the eight students before the court could not be allowed either to continue in Saveetha dental college or migrate to some other college affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University as requested by them.

In a counter affidavit filed on behalf of the college, its Registrar V. Thiagarajan had stated that the students under NRI quota were only given provisional admission subject to approval by the DCI.

“The fourth (Saveetha University) and fifth respondent (dental college) had worked tirelessly to protect the future of these students. They did not either fool or cheat the petitioners,” the counter read.

TTD may revoke ban on darshan from Aug 11-16

Faced with flak from various sections, especially from social media and opposition parties, on the move to close Lord Venkateshwara Temple at Tirumala for six days from August 11as part of a once every 12-year ritual, Tirumala Tirupati Devesthanams (TTD) will reconsider its decision and is likely to climb down from imposing a total ban on darshan to pilgrims on those six days.

The need to review its decision was also influenced by an appeal from chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu who urged the temple administration not to inconvenience devotees by denying darshan to them. Now, TTD executive board will take a final call on the matter at its meeting here on July 24.

Addressing a press conference along with TTD chairman Putta Sudhakar Yadav, executive officer A K Singhal said, “Apart from devotees, chief minister N Chadrababu Naidu told us to reconsider our decision and ensure that pilgrims are not put to any inconvenience during the six days of the ritual. On July 23, we will take the opinion of devotees and the next day take a final decision on the issue.” In case it goes ahead with allowing darshan on those six days, TTD will have to then decide whether the darshan should be provided on a firstcome-first-served basis or on the basis of the tickets issued online. “However, in view of the Maha Samprokshanam from August 11-16, we will be able to allow darshan only for about 30 hours during those six days. This would mean only about 15,000 devotees will be able to get darshan on each one of those days,” the EO said. According to Singhal, the temple can be kept open for devotees only for nine hours on August 11, four hours each on August 12 and 13, five hours each on August 14 and 15 and four hours on August 16.

The Madras high court on Tuesday directed Saveetha University, a deemed university, to pay ₹25 lakh each to students who were admitted to the BDS course without NEET under NRI quota.

Justice S Vaidyanathan also directed the college management to return all the fees collected from the students whose career had been affected by the college authorities’ move.

The judge passed the order on a batch of pleas moved by V S Subeeksha and others, all second year BDS students in the college.

The petitioners wanted the court to quash the January 22 order of the Dental Council of India directing the university to discharge 13 students admitted under the NRI category without writing NEET.

Disposing of the pleas, the judge said, “Though the relief sought for by the petitioners cannot be granted, the students had already completed two years of study in the university and they are now forced to stay away from the third year. As the students had lost two years and any admission to the course is invalid, the fees paid by the students to the university under all heads have to be refunded to them.”

This apart, the students will be entitled to ₹25 lakh each as compensation to be paid by the institute. The amount will have to be paid within 45 days, failing which it is open to the government to attach the properties of the university to bring it to sale, the judge said.

The court also directed the institute to return all original certificates of the petitioners and issue transfer certificates to them within a week.

The income tax raids on the premises of SPK and Christie Foods seems to have come as an ideal opportunity for deputy chief minister and AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam to raise his voice, after almost a year, in the party forum.

At an internal meeting held at the AIADMK headquarters on Monday, OPS raised the issue of forming the steering committee, pending for long, to pave way for collective leadership for the party.

According to party insiders, former CM J Jayalalithad controlled the party with an iron hand and the party abided by her decisions and actions. In her absence, that is no longer the case. Hence, it was decided to usher in an era of collective leadership in the party by setting up a steering committee and this was a main condition agreed upon before the merger of the factions led by OPS and CM Edappadi K Palaniswami. “A resolution for the same was passed in the General Council meeting on September 12, 2017 and incorporated into the party bylaw,” recalled an AIADMK leader.

At the Monday meeting, when some leaders were discussing conducting state-wide meetings to highlight the government’s achievements, a few others drew their attention to hundreds of party posts lying vacant and the need to fill them up. “Immediately, OPS said when the steering committee itself is yet to be formed, how can we talk about other posts. We don’t have a mass leader and hence decisions should be taken through collective leadership and not by individuals any longer,” a source in AIADMK said.

OPS wanted the committee to be formed immediately and all issues and decisions concerning the party be referred to it and ratified by coordinator, joint coordinator and deputy coordinators. “This strong statement by OPS rattled the EPS camp,” the source added, recalling developments at the meeting.

Indications had emerged by Monday night that formation of the steering committee cannot be delayed any longer.

“While it will be a 11-member committee, as originally planned, the numbers could tilt in favour of EPS, given his growing clout over the past year, than the 6 for his camp as decided last year. An announcement regarding the committee could be made soon,” a senior party leader told TOI.

Meanwhile, party insiders say, for the first time, a top level internal meeting at the party headquarters ended without a word being uttered about the opposition DMK. “Not a single word was spoken about the DMK at Monday’s meeting and the focus was completely on T T V Dhinakaran. That clearly showed how jittery and scared the leaders are about him,” said a senior leader, seeking anonymity.

No monthly passes, MTC users lose reimbursement

Hundreds of regular Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus users from the city's western suburbs are losing out on their monthly travel reimbursements from their respective firms because of an inordinate delay by MTC authorities in issuing or renewing monthly seasonal tickets at authorised depots. Long queues were spotted in many MTC depots to get these thousand rupee passes on Monday and Tuesday.

The week started with confusion at Avadi depot, the only sales counter available in the western suburbs after Porur, as passes were unavailable till late in the evening. The thousand rupee monthly pass became an indispensable option for regular MTC users after the transport corporation discontinued distribution of daily concessional passes worth ₹50 due to security reasons.

Rates of monthly passes were unaltered even when the government bus fares were increased by up to 50% in January. As per official data, although MTC's regular footfall dropped significantly, sales of monthly passes increased from 50,000 to 79,000 after fare revision. MTC earned more than three crore rupees by selling these passes. However, authorities did not bother to ensure that the passes were made available to passengers on time.

MTC authorities at Avadi depot have repeatedly delayed the distribution process, said T Sadagopan, a consumer rights activist. This has forced many office-goers to forgo their monthly travel reimbursements as most private firms expect their employees to submit travel bills in the first week, he added. Responding to this, an MTC official said that Avadi depot is running short of passes and attributed the delay to time taken in bringing the printed copies from Porur depot.

Given the increase in demand for arts and science courses and decline in engineering placements, more students are opting for law-related courses. As a result, there is cut-throat competition for seats in colleges affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU).

The rank list and minimum eligibility score (or cutoff) for 2018-19 admissions were released on Tuesday. This year 91.5% has been set as the cut-off score for general category candidates to get admitted into the five year integrated law course (BA LLB).

This figure was set at 93.625% last year. The minor dip was attributed to a drop in overall performance of Tamil Nadu state board students in their final exams this year. Applications for the integrated course were issued from June 1.

A total of 7,644 applications were received for 1,411 sanctioned seats in 11affiliated colleges across Tamil Nadu. Of these, 300 were rejected. This implies that this year five students are competing for one seat. “The application figure was below 6,000 a few years ago and reached a peak of 9,500 last year because of the confusion over engineering counselling at Anna University and NEET,” said a senior TNDALU official on condition of anonymity.

The university in its press release has announced that call letters would be sent to all the eligible candidates via post and they can also download the same from TNDALU's official website (http://tndalu.ac.in) Eligible candidates, who did not receive the call letter or are unable to download it, can arrive at the counselling venue directly with relevant documents and ID proof, the release added.

Counselling for general category seats will begin on July

23. For SC/ST candidates, counselling has been scheduled on July 24 and seats under reserved communities will be held on the next two days. As far as the five-year integrated honours course is concerned, counselling will be held on July 21.

No relief from HC for cop dismissed on graft charge

The tentacles of corruption have permeated to all levels and are eating into the vitals of the state. If such omnipotent corruption is not checked and eradicated, the state will be practically left with nothing for the future generation to understand what honesty is, which is the very essence of civilized human existence, the Madras high court said while refusing relief to a cop from graft charges.

Justice V Parthiban made the observations on a plea moved by a dismissed sub-inspector of police Palanimuthu who was suspended on charges of corruption at the verge of his retirement.

“A stern view is to be taken, since the incidents of corruption are proliferating in alarming proportion in public employment and therefore, a deterrent punishment ought to be the order of the day to curb or curtail the abominable menace of corruption,” the judge said.

Since the court is of the considered view that the proved corruption cannot be condoned under any circumstances and therefore dismissal order cannot even be remotely held to be disproportionate, the court added.

Further pointing out to the service rules governing the service conditions of the government servants, the judge said: “As a matter of imposing punishment for dishonesty, it can only be either removal or dismissal from service. While holding as such, the writ petition is hereby dismissed as being devoid of merits.”

This apart, the court suggested the state bring in suitable amendments to disciplinary rules with a similar provision as rules for central government employees under a major penalty chapter incorporating only removal and dismissal from service in proved corruption cases, subject to exceptional cases in which strong reasons need to be recorded in writing by the disciplinary authority for imposing any other penalty.

The petitioner who joined in the police service as constable got periodic promotions and at the time of dismissal from service he was in the cadre of subinspector.

After failing in his attempts to get the corruption charges quashed, the petitioner approached the court to modify the dismissal order with a mercy petition. A similar application has already been rejected by the DGP confirming the dismissal.

குழந்தை கடத்துவோர் என நினைத்து கர்நாடகாவில் ஐடி ஊழியர் அடித்துக் கொல்லப்பட்ட சம்பவத்திற்கு முழுக்க முழுக்க ‘வாட்ஸ் ஆப்’ மூலம் பரப்பப்பட்ட வதந்தியே காரணம் என தெரிய வந்துள்ளது. இதையடுத்து வாட்ஸ் ஆப் குழுவை நிர்வகிக்கும் ‘அட்மின்’ எனப்படும் பொறுப்பாளர் மற்றும் ‘வாட்ஸ் ஆப்’பில் ‘பார்வர்டு’ செய்து வதந்தியை வேகமாக பரப்பியவர்கள் உள்ளிட்ட 27 பேர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

தெலங்கானா மாநிலம், ஹைதராபாத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் முகம்மது ஆசம் உஸ்மான்சாப்(வயது 28). இவர் ஐடி நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்றி வந்தார். இவரின் நண்பர்கள் 3 பேருடன் சேர்ந்து, கர்நாடக மாநிலம், பிதார் அருகே ஹந்தேகேரா கிராமத்தில் உள்ள நண்பர் முகம்மது பஷீர் அப்ரோஸை சந்திக்க வெள்ளிக்கிழமை சென்றனர். மேலும் அங்கு சில இடங்களையும் சுற்றப் பார்க்கச் சென்றனர்.

பஷீரைச் சந்தித்துச் சென்றுவிட்டு, முகம்மது ஆசமும், அவரின் நண்பர்களும் காரில் ஹைதராபாத்துக்கு திரும்பினர். அப்போது முர்கி எனும் கிராமத்தில் முகம்மது ஆசமும் அவரின் நண்பர்களும் தங்களின் காரை நிறுத்தி சிறிதுநேரம் இளைப்பாறினார்கள். அப்போது, அந்தக் கிராமத்தில் இருந்த குழந்தைகளுக்கு சாக்லெட்டுகளைக் கொடுத்தனர்.

இதைப் பார்த்த அந்தக் கிராமத்துக்கு மக்கள் குழந்தைகளைக் கடத்த வந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என நினைத்துள்ளனர். அதற்கு ஏற்றார்போல், முகம்மது ஆசம் வந்த காரும் புதிய கார் என்பதால், நம்பர் பிளேட் இல்லாமல் இருந்தது.

இதனால், கூடுதல் சந்தேகமடைந்த கிராம மக்கள் அவர்களைக் குழந்தை கடத்துவோர் என நினைத்து தாக்கத் தொடங்கினார்கள். அவர்கள் அங்கிருந்து தப்பித்து காரில் செல்ல முயன்றபோது அவர்களைப் புகைப்படம் எடுத்து அடுத்தடுத்த கிராமத்தில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு வாட்ஸ் அப்பில் பரப்பியுள்ளனர்.

இதனால், அடுத்த கிராமத்தைக் காரில் கடக்கும்போது, அந்தக் கிராமத்துக்கு மக்கள் முகம்மது ஆசிமின் காரை வழிமறித்து கல்லாலும், கட்டையாலும் தாக்கினார்கள். இது குறித்து தகவல் அறிந்த போலீஸார் அங்கு விரைந்து வந்து, முகம்மது ஆசிமையும் அவரின் நண்பர்களையும் தாக்கியவர்களை விரட்டியடித்தனர்.

காயமடைந்தவர்களை மருத்துவமனைக்கு சிகிச்சைக்காக கொண்டு சென்றனர். ஆனால், சிகிச்சைக்கு கொண்டு செல்லும் வழியில் முகம்மது ஆசிம் உயிரிழந்தார். இதையடுத்து போலீஸார் வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்து, விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

இந்த தாக்குதலுக்கு முழுக்க முழுக்க ‘வாட்ஸ் ஆப்’பில் பரப்பப்பட்ட வதந்தியே காரணம் என தெரிய வந்துள்ளது. முகம்மது ஆசமை குழந்தை கடத்த வந்தவர் என நினைத்து ஒரு கும்பல் தாக்கியபோது, அவர்களை புகைப்படம் எடுத்து வாட்ஸ் ஆப்பில் குழந்தை கடத்துவோர் எனக் கூறி வதந்தி பரப்பியுள்ளனர்.

அக்கம் பக்கத்தில் உள்ள கிராம மக்கள் அனைவரையும் சிறிது நேரத்தில் திரட்டி பெரிய தாக்குதல் நடத்த வாட்ஸ் ஆப் வதந்தியே காரணம் என்பது போலீஸ் விசாரணையில் தெரிய வந்துள்ளது.

இந்தத் தாக்குதல் தொடர்பாக 30-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் மீது வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்த காவல்துறையினர் வதந்தியை பலருக்கும் பரப்புவதற்கு காரணமாக இருந்த வாட்ஸ் ஆப் குழுவின் ‘குரூப் ஆட்மின்’ மற்றும் தங்களுக்கு வந்த தகவல்களை வேகமாக திட்டமிட்டு வாட்ஸ் ஆப் மூலம் பரப்பியவர்களும் கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர். அவர்கள் அனைவரிடமும் போலீஸார் தீவிர விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

இந்தோனேஷியாவில் உறவினரை கடித்துக் குதறிய முதலையைப் பழிவாங்கும் நோக்கில், பண்ணையில் வளர்க்கப்பட்டு வந்த 300-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட முதலைகளை ஒரு கும்பல் வெட்டிச் சாய்த்துவிட்டுச் சென்றது .

இந்தோனேசியாவில் பப்புவா என்ற மாநிலம் உள்ளது. அங்குள்ள சோராங் நகரில் மிகப்பெரிய முதலைப்பண்ணை உள்ளது. குடியிருப்பு பகுதிகளுக்கு அருகே இருப்பதால், இந்தப் பண்ணையை வேறு இடத்துக்கு மாற்றக்கோரி அப்பகுதி மக்கள் பண்ணையாளர்களுக்கு கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளனர். ஆனால், தொடர்ந்து அந்தப் பண்ணை செயல்பட்டு வந்துள்ளது.

இந்நிலையில், கடந்த சில நாட்களுக்கு முன் 48 வயதான சுகிட்டோ என்பவர், முதலைப்பண்ணைக்கு அருகே இருக்கும் புல்வெளிப்பகுதியில் தனது கால்நடைகளுக்கு புற்கள் அறுத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது, அந்தப் பகுதிக்குள் வந்த முதலை ஒன்று சுகிட்டோவின் காலைக் கடித்துள்ளது. இதில் இருந்து தப்பிக்க நினைத்த சுகிட்டோ முதலைப் பண்ணைக்குள் ஓடியபோது, மற்ற முதலைகளால் தாக்கப்பட்டு, கடித்துக் குதறப்பட்டு உயிரிழந்தார்.

இந்நிலையில், சுகிட்டோவின் இறுதிச்சடங்கு இன்று நடந்து முடிந்தது. இறுதிச் சடங்கை முடித்துவிட்டு, கையில் கத்தி, கம்பு, கூரிய ஆயுதங்களுடன் புறப்பட்ட அப்பகுதி மக்கள், முதலைப்பண்ணைக்குள் புகுந்தனர்.

முதலைப்பண்ணையில் பணியாற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்த ஊழியர்கள் தடுத்தும், கிராம மக்கள் கேட்கவில்லை. பண்ணைக்குள் இறங்கி, அங்கிருந்த 300-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட முதலைகளை தாங்கள் கொண்டு வந்திருந்த ஆயுதங்களால் வெட்டிச் சாய்த்து கொலை செய்தனர். தங்களின் உறவினரை கடித்துக் குதறிய முதலைகளை பழிக்குப்பழிவாங்கும் வகையில், முதலைகளைக் கொன்று குவித்துவிட்டு அப்பகுதி மக்கள் சென்றனர்.

இதில் 4 இஞ்ச் குட்டி முதலைகள் முதல் 2 மீட்டர் வரை வளர்ந்த பெரிய முதலைகள் வரை தப்பவில்லை. அனைத்து முதலைகளையும் தேடிப்படித்து வெட்டிசிதைத்துவிட்டு அந்தக் கும்பல் அங்கிருந்து சென்றனர்.

இது குறித்து பண்ணை நிர்வாகத்தினர் சார்பில் போலீஸிடம் புகார் அளிக்கப்பட்டது. சம்பவ இடத்துக்கு வந்து பார்வையிட்ட போலீஸார், முதலைகள் கொல்லப்பட்டு குவியலாகக் கிடக்கும் காட்சியைப் பார்த்து அந்தப் பகுதி மக்கள் மீது கிரிமினல் வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்துள்ளனர்.

'சார். ஒருநாள் டைம் கொடுங்க, நான் எனக்கு மேல் உள்ளவர்களிடம் பேசிவிட்டுச் சொல்கிறேன்’ என்று கூறியுள்ளார். நாளை வருகிறேன் என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு அந்த இளைஞர் கிளம்பிச் சென்றுள்ளார்.

இதையடுத்து பணத்துக்காகத்தான் தங்களை அந்த இளைஞர் மிரட்டுகிறார் என்பதை புரிந்துகொண்ட ஓட்டல் நிர்வாகத்தினர் இதுபற்றி வேளச்சேரி காவல் நிலையத்தில் புகார் அளித்துள்ளனர்.

புகாரைப் பெற்ற போலீஸார் பணம் கேட்டு மிரட்டிய இளைஞரைப் பிடிக்க திட்டம் வகுத்துள்ளனர். அதன்படி 'ஐந்து லட்ச ரூபாய் முடியாது கொஞ்சம் குறைத்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள் என்று பேசி ரூ.3 லட்சம் என்று பேசுங்கள். அதை நம்பி அந்த இளைஞர் வரும்போது பிடித்து விடலாம்' என்று கூறியுள்ளனர். இதையடுத்து போலீஸார் சொன்னபடி மேலாளர் அந்த இளைஞரிடம் பேசியுள்ளார்.

The Supreme Court has erred in its judgement where it said that the Parliament has also had powers to govern the universities.

Chennai: Slamming the central government for coming up with the proposed draft Higher Education Commission of India Act 2018, Justice A.K. Rajan, former Judge, Madras High Court said, “The central government has no power either to establish or regulate or winding up the universities according to the Constitution.”

He released the book titled “Education – Not a commodity for Market”, a compilation of responses to MHRD’s draft act on Monday here. After releasing the book, he said, “If the proposed HECI act comes into existence all the universities and states will be powerless as it will govern the entire higher education.”

Quoting the constitution he said, “The powers to establish the universities and regulating them and winding them up is exclusively given to the state legislatures under Entry 32 List 2 (state list). The Parliament is specifically excluded not to interfere with these aspects.”

The union government has no power to establish a university and regulate any university or to wind up any university under entry 44 list 1 (union list, he added.

He further cited that universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University were established by bringing an amendment to the constitution as the union government does not have the power to establish the universities.

“The confusing aspect is the entry 25 list 3 (concurrent list) which states that both central and states have powers in education, including technical education, medical education and universities. While reading with the other two entries, the interpretation could be university education. It is not establishing, regulating and winding up universities which were particularly denied to the central government and conferred with the state governments,” he explained.

Citing the modern dental college case, he said, “The Supreme Court has erred in its judgement where it said that the Parliament has also had powers to govern the universities. The judgment has no mention of entry 44 of list 1 where the constitution has excluded the Parliament. Nobody has filed a review petition against this judgment.”

“In my view, the Supreme Court has failed in its duty to protect the constitution as regards to this judgment. When the central government was specifically denied certain powers and how can it claim to have those powers?” he wondered. Justice D.Hariparanthaman, State Platform for Common School System general secretary P.B.Prince Gajendrababu and others spoke at the function.

I-T raids unearth cash stash, gold in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: In yet another long string of extensive raids across multiple locations in Tamil Nadu, the Income Tax sleuths on Monday conducted searches at the offices and residences associated with the SPK Group, a longtime highways contractor with alleged links to political high-ups. The IT department had recently raided the companies supplying eggs and nutritious food to the TN noon meals scheme.

Informed sources said the present raids in about 30 locations in Chennai, Madurai, Aruppukottai and elsewhere began in the early hours of the day and continued through the night at most places. A huge amount of cash and incriminating documents were seized. One estimate was that about `80 crore was seized in addition to a large amount of gold. A substantial part of the ‘booty’ was picked up from cars parked in various premises raided, sources said.


They said properties of Nagarajan Seyyadurai, managing director, SPK and Co Expressway Pvt Ltd, were also raided. A source said the SPK Group, one of the main road contractors in the state for a long time, has been under IT scanner for sometime following information of large-scale cash movement post demonetisation; besides, there were suspicious elements in the books of accounts and tax returns. The ‘concerned’ persons in the Group and allied outfits are being questioned, the source added.

While senior minister D. Jayakumar sought to downplay the political significance of the IT raids, arguing that the taxmen were only doing their job in going after tax evasion cases and this one has nothing to do with any irregularity linked to the state government, opposition DMK was quick to cry foul.

Party working president M.K. Stalin tweeted from London saying that the SPK group under the IT scanner was a ‘benami’ of Chief Minister K. Palaniswami and had been rewarded massive road contracts against norms. He wanted investigation and the restoration of the booty to state exchequer.

Rubbishing Stalin’s charge, minister Jayakumar said the DMK leader had no locus standi making such charges since massive corruption in awarding road contracts had taken place during the DMK rule, 2006-2011. The same contractors were operating even then, he said, adding that the present AIDMK government was awarding contracts to the lowest bidder showing no undue favour as per the Tender Transparency Act. Stalin must look into the mirror before making his wild charges on twitter from distant London, the AIADMK senior said.

CHENNAI: Holding that the daughter of a man, who had defaulted in repaying the loans advanced by a particular bank on earlier occasions, is not eligible for a fresh educational loan, Justice S Vaidyanathan dismissed a writ petition last month. However, holding that the grant of educational loan is not a charity, the second bench of Justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and M Dhandapani on Monday directed the bank branch manager to appear before it on July 23.

Originally, A Deepika of Nagapattinam district had approached the High Court challenging the action of the Thalaignayiru branch of the SBI in rejecting her educational loan application on the ground that her father had defaulted in repaying the loans advanced by the branch to him on earlier occasions.
And the single judge upheld the action of the bank. Hence, the present writ appeal.

The bench directed the branch manager to appear with all records relating to the RBI guidelines on the sanction of the educational loan on July 23. According to petitioner, she approached the SBI in Thalaignayiru for an education loan of `3.40 lakh. Though an application along with relevant documents was submitted, the bank refused to grant the educational loan. Hence, the present appeal.


Suicide bids to garner the attention of authorities should be discouraged

Chennai: Making it clear that suicide attempt is an offence under Indian Penal Code, the Madras High Court, in an interim order, observed that it had become normal all these days threatening and resorting to this kind of twisting methods so as to grab the attention of the authorities. The court was hearing a petition filed by G Rajkumar who was fighting against the authorities seeking to remove encroachment, against which the petitioner consumed poison. Attempt to suicide is an offence under IPC, the judges said.

NEW DELHI: The government is likely to award IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur "Institute of Eminence" tag when it gets recommendations for more institutes by the Empowered Expert Committee headed by N Gopalaswami in the public and private institutes category.

On July 9, the Union Human Resources Development ministry had declared the coveted status was being accorded to IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay and the Bengaluru-based Indian Institute of Science in the public sector, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS Pilani and Jio Institute in the private sector.

The decision to bestow the status to Reliance Foundation's Jio Institute had triggered massive uproar as the institute is yet to start operations and was accorded the tag based on assurance and commitments. "We had got five more recommendations in the public institute category but chose just three because the idea was to select equal numbers in both private and public categories," HRD secretary (higher education) R Subrahmanyam said.

"As and when we get more suggestions by the EEC, we will declare a total of twenty institutes for the status," the secretary said. The government institutes which had been recommended for the tag included IITs at Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur apart from Delhi University, Jadavpur University and Anna University besides the three which bagged it. The EEC in its report submitted to the government had said about public institutions that "there are some which are specialised institutions that have a well-established reputation and competence in a subject and have concentrated on that expertise adding only related areas."

"Many of these institutions have applied for recognition under the scheme most probably attracted by the financial dispensation and not because they stand a reasonable chance of achieving the stiff goal of being within 500 of world university rankings in 10 years," the report also said.

The only consolation effort would be in their becoming sensitised to the requirements for being highly acclaimed institutions, noted the committee and argued that their core competence is important to the country and should not be lost in their desire to attract funds under this scheme. EEC recommended their being assisted financially, where necessary, but through a different dispensation.

KOTTAYAM: The heavy rain and strong wind wreaked havoc in and around Kottayam on Sunday. Due to strong wind, many trees got uprooted and continuous rain flooded the low-lying areas of the town. Sajimon T Joseph, assistant station officer of Kottayam Fire Station said they received around 20 calls over the past two days.

“All the calls were regarding uprooted trees. Many trees in and around Kottayam town fell on the roads causing severe traffic blocks. There was power outage through the night as electric lines snapped,” he said.

All the incidents happened in the night when the wind was at the strongest, he added.

“However, none of the houses was completely damaged and no casualties has been reported, “ he added. At Kumarakkom, a shikara boat carrying two tourists overturned in the strong wind on Vembanad Lake on Saturday evening.“However, there were no casualties. The tourists from Chennai were rescued by fishermen,” he said.

New NEET format will further privatise education: Experts

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Prakash Javadekar last Saturday announced that NEET and IIT-JEE will be held twice a year in a fully computerised manner. However, experts opine that the new format will further privatise education and demean the value of school education system.

The Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) [JEE-Mains] and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) will now be conducted twice a year instead of just once. Students can take JEE in January and April and NEET in February and May and the best of two scores will be considered, he announced.

The two tests would be equated using psychometric methods, standardisation techniques and best of the equated scores would be used for the admissions. Such a set-up will improve transparency of the exam process.

With this move, aspirants don’t have to wait a year to take these exams again for improvement. Students can either take the exam during their schooling or right after, to enter college the next year. Students who can wait for a year, do not have to stay put till next summer to write the exams.

Several central exams to enter National Defence or Naval Academy already follow a similar pattern. However, what sets JEE and NEET apart is that the number of aspirants who take the exam are much higher. About 25 lakh students across the country took these exams in 2018.

Given that the number of seats for both medicine and engineering at prestigious institutions- are low, the exams are one that is of high stake for students. Having these exams twice would undermine the value of school education, opined educationalist Prince Gajendrababu.

Although students can write the exams just once, most aspirants will end-up taking it twice. The first set of exams, will coincide with students’ practical and model exams.

Integrated programmes to coach students for competitive exams became so rampant in Tamil Nadu, that the State government had recently issued a circular warning schools not to tie-up with private parties to engage in coaching for competitive exams. Schools often demand fees much higher the sum proposed by the fee determination committee in return for integrated training.

In a circular sent to all Chief Educational Officers of districts, it has been warned that schools which do not fall in line would have to face penal action including withdrawal of recognition. “Violation of these rules by private schools would invite stringent penal action under the stipulations of Tamilnadu Recognised Private Schools (Regulation Act) 1973,” said S Kannappan, Director of Matriculation schools.

A report by MHRD in 2016 estimated that a revenue of nearly Rs 24,000 crores per year is being involved in private coaching classes. The figure is still a rough under-statement as students who go to coaching centres, get trained for more than a year.

The report by MHRD pointed to three main concerns: “The first is philosophical (yet important). The purpose of education is refinement of the mind not passing an entrance examination. The second concerns the fact that ‘all work and no play’ makes a Plus two grade student a dull individual with less involvement in activities other than studies. The third is that students are forced to waste much time commuting in order to avail themselves of the benefit of ‘good’ coaching."

High stakes

Given that the number of seats at prestigious institutions- are low, these exams are of a high stake for students. Having them exams twice a year would undermine the value of school education, said educationalist Prince Gajendrababu.

Rural students

When reporters asked Javadekar if the computer-based tests will put rural students at a disadvantage, he defended saying that students who take these exams already have exposure to computers.

NEW DELHI: The largest public sector lender State Bank of India has ordered all its zonal branches to recover the ‘compensation’ given for overtime during demonetisation to 70,000-odd officers of various associate banks that were inducted into SBI post-merger.

During the demonetisation period, bank employees were paid compensation for working beyond 7 pm between November 14 and December 30, 2016. They were paid an “out-of-pocket expense” that varied between Rs 15,000 and Rs 30,000, depending on the scale and rank of officials.

The SBI management said that the compensation was for the period before merger, when the associated banks were not part of the SBI.

“The claim related to the period prior to the merger of e-ABs (erstwhile Associate Banks) should have been dealt by e-ABs at the material time and we have no record of any commitment to pay the same,” SBI said in an internal communication.

The communication also asked the officers to “examine under what circumstances approval was given for the payment of compensation to the officers of e-ABs”. It further asked to “recover where wrong payments have been made.”

Over 70,000 officers and employees became part of the SBI when its associate banks - State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Travancore and State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur - merged with the parent on April 1, 2017.

CHENNAI: Hospitals are sterile environments where infections are cured not acquired. However, the Pallavaram Municipality’s decision to construct a compost pit in the premises of the Primary Health Centre in Old Pallavaram might change that. Despite opposition from hospital staff, the Pallavaram Municipality has started building a compost pit in the hospital compound on Friday. If the Municipality has its way, patients and the rotting garbage of the entire twelfth ward will be entering the hospital premises through the same gate.

“This is a 24-hour PHC which has an operation theatre. We do family planning surgeries here, and it is important to keep the place contamination free,” said a senior nurse, alleging the municipality had gone back on its word and has begun construction of the compost pit. When Express visited the hospital on Sunday, it found the backyard littered with old, broken tricycles used in solid waste collection near the site where the compost pit is being built.

“The municipality was using the backyard as a scrap dump yard and now they want to build a compost pit in the premises. Even people without education will know what a stupid idea this is,” said CD Suresh, a resident of Pallavaram.

“The smell is one issue but the place will invariably be littered with rotting waste,” he said.

The periphery of compost pits being littered with waste is a phenomenon that Express has observed in multiple compost pits which are operational in city limits. Conservancy workers end up segregating waste at the site which results in littering and attracts rodents. According to the hospital staff, the hospital attends to a majority of maternity cases. “If the mother gets sick because of the contamination, it will affect the child in her womb also,” said a staff member. The municipality officials said a wall would be constructed to prevent a spillover of waste but said no alternative could be provided for the entry of waste.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated CT scan facility at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) through videoconferencing on Monday.

Though the TVMCH has already got the CT scan facility to conduct radiological investigation of 80 to 100 patients a day, the new equipment, costing Rs. 1.78 crore, is capable of completing the investigation of 140 patients a day.

Dean S.M. Kannan said patients undergoing treatment at the hospital would have to pay Rs. 500 (Rs. 300 more for contrast) for the CT scan, for which private scan centres charge anywhere between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 8,000.

Deputy Dean Revathi Balan, Medical Superintendent Ravichandran and senior doctors were present.

‘Govt. staff must sport ID cards at work’

HC fiat will also apply to employees of local bodies


The Madras High Court on Monday made it mandatory for all government employees in the State as well as those working for local bodies and other government instrumentalities to wear their identity cards during working hours. The First Division Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P.T. Asha issued the direction on a suo motu public interest litigation petition, taken up on the basis of a letter from a resident of Erode.

In the letter addressed to the Chief Justice, M. Valli Narayanan had sought the implementation of a 1986 Government Order which required government servants to sport their name badges during working hours. Despite the existence of such a condition, a majority of government employees were found violating the norm, he alleged. Special Government Pleader E. Manohar informed the court that the old system of displaying name badges had been done away with, and government servants had been provided with computerised identity cards containing their photographs and other essential details.

After recording the submission, the Division Bench ordered that government servants should sport identity cards during working hours. It also directed the High Court Registry to forward a copy of the court order to Mr. Narayanan.

HC confirms dismissal of judge on graft charge

He had received illegal gratification to grant bail

The Madras High Court on Monday confirmed the dismissal of a principal district judge from service after finding him guilty of having received illegal gratification to grant bail to an accused in a child sexual abuse case. The court held that the punishment imposed on him was commensurate with the seriousness of the misconduct committed by him.

A Division Bench of Justices M. Venugopal and N. Nirmal Kumar rejected a writ petition filed by K. Ganesan, challenging a Government Order issued by the Public Department on April 24, 2017, dismissing him from service. They pointed out that the G.O. had been issued only on the basis of a recommendation made by a majority of the Madras High Court judges.

The Bench said the petitioner had joined judicial service as a district munsif-cum-judicial magistrate through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission in November 1988, and had served in various districts over a period of 24 years. He was holding the post of the principal district judge, Tirupur, when he was about to complete 58 years of age on November 30, 2012.

Nevertheless, considering his past records of service, the High Court, on November 23, 2012, extended his service for two more years, and on September 16, 2014, suspended him from service, pending an enquiry into allegations of corruption against him. The action was initiated on the basis of a complaint lodged by the father of a victim of child sexual abuse.

Subsequently, Justice K. Ravichandrabaabu of the High Court was appointed as the enquiry officer, and he found the writ petitioner guilty on August 10, 2016. The enquiry officer found the district judge to have granted bail to the accused on the ground that the public prosecutor had not raised any serious objection, though the reality was otherwise.

Filing of chargesheet

On perusing the records, the officer found that the prosecution had filed a counter-affidavit, vehemently objecting to the grant of bail. He also summoned and recorded the statement of the public prosecutor that the latter did raise strong objections to the grant of bail. The writ petitioner did not submit any evidence to disprove the statement.

Further, the petitioner, during the enquiry, claimed to have granted bail only because a chargesheet had been filed in the case. But a bare reading of the bail order clearly showed that he was not even aware of the chargesheet having been filed. The petitioner was also found guilty of having granted bail with simple conditions for extraneous considerations.

The enquiry officer’s report was placed before the High Court’s Administrative Committee (comprising seven senior judges) which, on August 30, 2016 decided to dismiss the petitioner from service. The decision was approved by a majority of judges in the full court meeting held on January 10, 2017, and forwarded to the government for necessary action.

Now, authoring the judgment for the Division Bench, Mr. Justice Venugopal said the punishment was neither irrational nor disproportionate. He said a charge need not be proved with rigid mathematical demonstration, as it was impossible to do so. It was sufficient to prove a charge with evidence that would induce a reasonable man to come to a particular conclusion, he said.

Homage paid to Kumbakonam fire victims on 14th anniversary

Parents and relatives of the 94 children who were charred to death in the 2004 Kumbakonam fire tragedy have appealed to the state government to announce July 16 – the day the accident happened – as ‘Children Protection Day.’ They also requested that a local holiday be announced in view of the anniversary, every year.

K Inbaraj, a parent and a native of Kumbakonam, who lost his two sons I Aanadharaj and I Praveenraj, who studied in Class V and III respectively, told TOI that announcing July 16 as Children Protection Day would create awareness among parents as well as school authorities on the protection of wards. “I lost both my kids and that should not happen to anyone.”

Parents, relatives and Tamil and political outfits paid homage to the deceased children on Monday, the 14th anniversary of the tragedy. They paid floral tributes to the portraits of the kids placed in front of the school, which has remained closed since the accident. They also lit candles in front of the flex banners and parents offered various treats like sweets and chocolates, which were liked by their wards.

Kumbakonam tahsildar Venkatachalam, municipality commissioner K Uma Maheswari and functionaries from various political parties also participated at the event and paid their tributes.

A total of 94 children were charred to death and 18 were grievously injured in the fire that broke out on July 16, 2004 at Krishna English Medium School in Kasiraman Street in Kumbakonam. Three children escaped with minor injuries. The school functioned from a building with a thatched roof.
