High demand pushes up international airfare
Dubai, US, Singapore Popular Routes

Airfares from Chennai to international destinations have increased for travel in April and May, the peak holiday season, due to the high demand. Various airlines are offering discounts only for February and March and not for the summer months, impacting those who have not planned in advance.

Travel agents say that people are spending more on tickets as the earlier trend of six months advance booking is not being followed anymore. Dubai, Singapore, Europe and the US are popular routes where the fares are high. Airfare is in the range of ₹10,000 to ₹18,000 to Singapore and ₹12,000 to ₹18,000 to Dubai, while tickets to Europe and the US have touched ₹1 lakh.

Basheer Ahmed of Metro Travels says that international fare is high for travel in the months of April and May when the maximum number of Indians travel to foreign destinations because of school holidays. “There are offers and discounts only for this month and March to encourage more people to travel but not for the peak travel season in the summer. Though there are some discounts, the fare shows high because of the demand. People who have not booked in advance of six months or more are forced to pay more to travel,” he says.

The booking trend is also changing. Earlier, people used to book for international travel six months in advance. Now, the booking window has been reduced to three months or less. “This has led to people spending more on travelling abroad. The high traffic pushes up the fare. Still people are booking. Airlines will offer discounts only closer to the departure dates so that they will be able to fill the rest of the unsold seats. This is impacting passengers, especially the young travellers, who book their tickets only two months or less in advance,” adds Ahmed.

Most of the families who travel do so with aged relatives. People who travel in groups for leisure book tickets in advance. The rest of the seats are booked by those who travel individually or with their friends. It is these travellers who have to spend more for booking flights in April and May, say travel agents.

Ritu Sharma of Switzerland Toursism says that Indians and Chinese are the tourists who mainly travel in the April and May summer months. European countries receive a lot of tourists from India during this time, she said.

The tourism authorities of these countries offer the best options for these tourists. However, the cost of travel goes up because of the high demand.
