Namakkal Collector may recommend verification of birth certificates across TN

Move follows busting of child sale racket

After the completion of verification of birth certificates in Kolli Hills after the busting of a child sale racket, the Namakkal district administration is likely to recommend the verification process for the entire State.

Namakkal Collector M. Asia Mariam said, “Immediately after a recorded conversation about the sale of newborns went viral in social media, teams were formed to conduct verification of birth certificates and survey in Kolli Hills.”

The teams looked at every child birth at Primary Health Centres here and conducted field survey to check if the children were still in their homes. “A report is being prepared and based on the report a similar survey across the State may be recommended,” she said.

Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Director of Health Services, said 15 five-member teams conducted the survey in Kolli Hills.

“Each team had a health inspector and the survey is over. A report will be submitted to the government and police officials in the next few days,” he said.

A recorded conversation between a prospective buyer and retired nursing assistant A. Amuthavalli on the sale of newborns went viral in social media recently. Based on the audio clip, Namakkal police arrested Amuthavalli, her husband S. Ravichandran, ambulance driver Murugesan and five other agents who were involved in the sale of 14 newborns.

The CB-CID recently took up the investigation of the case and they were granted custody of Amuthavalli for two days and ambulance driver Murugesan, Arulsami an agent from Erode, for three days by the Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Tuesday.
