Nursing assistant suspended in child trafficking case

The Health Department has suspended Santhi, 48, a nursing assistant at a primary health centre at Sarkar Kollapatti in the district, who was arrested by the CB-CID in connection with a child trafficking case.
The Deputy Director of Health Services, Dr. K. Poongodi, issued orders placing her under suspension. Officials said 9 persons had been arrested in connection with the case so far, including the main accused and retired nursing assistant R. Amuthavalli, her husband S. Ravichandran, ambulance driver Murugesan and five agents. The CB-CID took Amuthavalli, Murugesan and agents Parveen, Haseen and Arulsamy into custody, after which a vehicle used for transporting the babies was seized. Also, Rs. 1 lakh realised through the sale of a baby and stored in Arulsamy’s house was seized.
CB-CID officials said the gang had sold 30 babies, including 24 female babies, to childless couples across the State. Santhi was involved in the sale of five babies, and officials are in the process of identifying the couples who sold their babies and those who received them.
