Private varsity Bill tabled

A Bill to establish greenfield universities was tabled in the Assembly on Wednesday.
Presented by Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan, the Bill has laid conditions for establishing self-financing universities.
As per the Bill, such institutions shall be sponsored by trusts or societies or not-for-profit companies and comply with the standards laid down by the University Grants Commission for infrastructure, equipment and teachers.
The sponsoring body shall establish a permanent endowment fund of at least Rs. 50 crore. The university shall establish a general fund, to which all fees to be charged from the students will be paid. Similarly, every private university shall also establish a development fund, to which all the money received to develop the university, charged from students as development fees and contributions from sponsoring bodies/organisations will be deposited.
