The state government has identified locations for setting up six new medical colleges in six districts and released ₹600 crore for kickstarting the construction work.
While this would increase the number of MBBS seats in the state by 900, the government is likely to begin admissions by 2021. Land has been identified and transferred for establishing the new medical colleges in Dindigul, Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, the Nilgiris and Tiruppur districts.
In six identical orders issued on Tuesday, health secretary Beela Rajesh said that the government examined the proposal of the director of medical education and sanctioned the release of ₹100 crores for the construction of each medical college. As per estimates, each medical college would require ₹325 crore for construction, of which the state government’s share would be 40%. The remaining 60% funds would be borne by the Centre.
According to the government order, the new medical colleges are being constructed in land parcels of nine acres at Kooraikoondu in Virudhunagar, 11. 28 acre plot in Tiruppur town, Rakkiyapaayam group of Nallur village in Tiruppur district, 25 acres in a village in Udhagamandalam, 8 acres at Adiyanathoo village in Dindigul district, 10 acres in Siluvampatti village in Namakkal district and 9 acres at Pattinamkathan village at Ramanathapuram district.
The land has been transferred to the department of health and family welfare. The state government has also obtained approval of the technical evolution committee of the Centre and issued essentiality certificate for starting the new government medical colleges.
Each medical college will be offering 150 seats that would push the total seats available in the state to 4,150 seats. “The aim is to complete constructions and seek permission from MCI to start admissions for first year MBBS by 2021 in all six colleges,” director of medical education R Narayanababu told TOI.
The new medical colleges are based on the state government's decision on ‘one government medical college’ in each district.
