During earlier lock downs, shops across the city were asked to ensure physical distancing and not sell items when customers come without face masks. This time, in several parts of the city, police are instructing pharmacies to deny medicines to those who come on two-wheelers. While this is not an official advisory, pharmacy owners said they have received instructions from local police to dissuade people from using two-wheelers in the coming days.
In Nanganallur, police told pharmacists to deny medicines to those who come on two-wheelers and those who visit the pharmacies on twowheelers were warned and let off. “Some of them might not get medicines in the shops nearer to their house. So, they might use two-wheelers to go look for medicines,” said a medical shop owner in Nanganallur.
Police said the movement off vehicles are monitored using drones and visiting medical shops is a common reason given by public and many are found loitering without valid e-pass or necessity.
The corporation officials too hope that the intensified lockdown will help in controlling the spread.
“Our expectation is that case load will reduce in the city after this lockdown. We will see the changes within four-five days,” corporation Commissioner G Prakash told media persons on Monday. “This restriction of mobility and free movement is a technique. Today, roads only have 10% traffic. The nature of this virus is that a lot of them do not show any symptoms, but they could be carrying. If people like this stay indoors, we can cut the spread.”
