The Supreme Court began publishing its judgments in various languages from Thursday and the first verdict to be translated and uploaded on its website in Tamil was the one delivered on March 29 confirming the life sentence on popular restaurant chain Saravana Bhavan’s founder P. Rajagopal.
The translated versions of the Supreme Court judgments can be accessed by clicking on the link titled ‘vernacular judgments’ on the home page of the court.
Alternatively, English as well as the translated copies of the judgment can be accessed by clicking on the link ‘judgments’ and then carrying out a search using the case number or other details. All translated vernacular judgments carry a condition at the end that they are meant only to help litigants understand the verdict in their language.
It is also made clear that for all official purposes, the judgments delivered in English alone would be taken into consideration.
Elated over judgments being made available in Tamil, senior counsel and Rajya Sabha member P. Wilson said the credit must go to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M.K. Stalin, who sent a delegation of his party MPs to meet Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and impress upon him the need to translate the verdicts in the classical language too.
“Initially, the Supreme Court had not included Tamil among the vernacular languages in which it intended to release its judgements. It was only because of the efforts taken by DMK president that the CJI agreed to release the verdicts in Tamil too,” he asserted.
